This video creates for an interesting conversation. Would love to see a follow up video to this in the future how to make Shepard Tones risers and falls.👌🙂🙂🙂. Shepard Tones are a great way to add suspension.
You can create a shepard tone effect by stacking three or more octaves of the pitch bend effect explained in this video and fading out the top octave(s) and fading in the lower octave(s) on a loop. It may be easier said than done but that's essentially what shephard tones are.
This. I’ve seen a tut or 2 on Shepard tones but they’re ALWAYS lacking some data necessary to make a SMOOTH infinite riser. They usually say something like “stack a few pitch bends as fade the ends” but that always ends up in a Shepard tone that’s clearly repeating and not at all smooth and infinite.

Fantastic and simple explanation. It’s also used as atmospheric risers in the deep core psytrance culture, where a long breaks are not wanted. Cuz they can brake the tripping. So you create a riser who runs as atmosphere. Mostly one kick out of the bar and the next 8-16 bars are running. Without getting boring
this fear you speak of I know this and dealt with it when I was first starting out. It would even keep me from freezing and flattening in ableton. Turns out it is just procrastination and laziness, well it was on my part at least. Try diving into things that make you have that feeling and you will learn so much more and progress so much faster. Leveling was a big thing that was holding me back during those days, and it was because I was to lazy to learn proper leveling practices. There was just so many things to learn and there still are but now I can kind of pick and choose what I need if I feel a track is lacking.
Look at the spectrum as well. Increasing the power on the high freq side, filling the spectrum, results in a sense of tension. Specific chord progressions also built up tension
Long portamento also works great if you're using hardware or want to easily end on a certain note plus you c.an gate it to whatever rhythm you like to match the track. Nice vid
A tip for users of Ableton Live with M4L: connect the pitch-bend-value to a M4L-device so you don't have to change the value manually everytime to change the preset. Or do practically the same with 'regular' automation.

Oh, in response to the homework you assigned in this video. Do you know how to FREEZE a track within Reason Studios 12 DAW? I keep trying to figure out how to Freeze a track like you are able to FREEZE inside of Ableton. I don't have Ableton :(. My best work around for this feature has been to use Grain Sample Manipulation synth. But it doesn't sound as good as Abletons Freeze feature.
risers are pretty cheesy i mean yeah they have their place, but yeah they need to be done tastefully. i like shepards tones though a video on a bunch of different ways to do those would be great!
hmm... when I compare this video with your others, for example Rumblea (best tutorial on youtube), I have to say that I miss the expert stuff, for example in this case: crashes and reverse crashes at the end of a riser, laying several synths on top of each other and so on and so forth...

Small amounts of reverb is your friend :-) also try to use and automate the rate of an auto pan :-)
automating release and cutoff on your synths is rly useful for building up tension too

Reason doesn't have a Freeze. Instead, use 'bounce in place'.
choose a sample warp it as complex. adjust the pitch. :)
