- On October 21, 1941, three activists belonging to the "Youth Battalions" of the Communist Party shot dead Lieutenant-Colonel Karl Hotz in the center of Nantes. In retaliation, Hitler immediately demanded the execution of 150 French people. In Paris, at the Kommandantur, General-in-Chief von Stülpnagel will try everything to reduce the number of executions demanded by the Führer. The officer Ernst Jünger, also a writer and philosopher, is charged by his general with noting down the events, hour by hour. In Châteaubriant, the sub-prefect is responsible for designating the hostages from the Choiseul camp who will be shot. Among the prisoners, the young Guy Môquet. The Sea at Dawn is the story of the few hours which separate the attack from the execution of the French hostages, puppets suspended from the strings of a merciless machine which only works through obedience.
Guy Môquet, 17, was arrested in 1940 and then, with other political prisoners, shot in 1941 by the Germans in retaliation for an attack; his will: a farewell letter to his family, written just before his execution.

Obejrzałem cały film do końca i na koniec ręce i nogi się trzęsły i taki ogromny żal tych ludzi co zginęli. Ja rozumiem że to jest film z naszej historii. Ludzie wszystkich narodów powinny pomyśleć o tej zbrodni wojennej. A dzisiaj nadal wznawiane są nowe wojny i giną niewinni ludzie. Cześć wszystkim poległym Bohaterom i Proszę Pana Boga aby więcej taka zbrodnia się nie powtórzyła i apeluję do wszystkich narodów z całego świata aby nigdy nie doszło do podobnej sytuacji gdzie są mordowani niewinni ludzie.
Film bardzo dobrze zrobiony i ciekawy. Ale to o czym opowiada, w Polsce było na porządku dziennym. Mordowano całe wsie, całe rodziny. Gestapo torturowało Polaków w niewyobrażalny sposób, a zbrodnie dokonane na mieszkańcach Warszawy podczas Powstania Warszawskiego nie mają sobie równych w żadnym innym kraju. Więc szczerze mówiąc, nie bardzo rozumiem co Pana tak poruszyło?

ça me fait penser que l'école et collège de mon enfance n'était qu'à deux pas de la (modeste) maison de Jules Auffret en banlieue. Sinon dans le générique de fin, ils ont fait une choquante faute d'orthographe au nom de Huynh interprété par Christopher Tram. Ce n'est pas "Houynk Huong" comme sauvagement écrit mais "Huynh Khuong An" alias Luisne, qui n'était pas du Tonkin comme dit le gendarme du film mais de Cochinchine (Saigon, Vietnam) et dont j'ai toujours aimé la lettre d'adieu à Gerrmaine son épouse française:
"Sois courageuse, ma chérie. C’est sans aucun doute la dernière fois que je t’écris.
Aujourd’hui, j’aurai vécu.
Nous sommes enfermés provisoirement dans une baraque non habitée, une vingtaine de camarades, prêts à mourir avec courage et avec dignité.

A fine film which serves as a reminder to us all of the bravery of those that sacrificed everything in the name of freedom.
Freedom? They were stinking communists, no better than the Nazis.
Except that the French Communists that were executed were actively involved in making France fall to the Nazis. Until June 22, 1941, the orders from Moscow were to aid the Nazis. After the attack on the Soviet Union, the orders were changed, but the damage was already done. They were not sacrificing anything for freedom.

Smutne to my Polacy w czasie 2 wojny nie mielismy nawet takiego komfortu napisac do rodzin pod sciane i tyle w temacie zycie ludzkoe jest cenne czy Francuskie czy Polskie ale jednak Niemcy byli bardziej tolerancyjni dla Francuzow jak dla Polakow.
Zauważyłem to samo gdy jeden z oficerów oburzał się na nadchodzące pomnożone egzekucje zakładników, mówiąc do drugiego oficera niemieckiego: "Przecież nie jesteśmy w Polsce!,", co w domyśle oznaczało, że Polaków uważali za mniej wartościowych i że w Polsce takie 'mnożniki ofiar' były na porządku dziennym. W innym momencie oficer niemiecki, przy innej okazji, mówił o technicznej przewadze Niemców, ale przyznał, że "... (Francuzi) przewyższają nas kulturą i sztuką." Wniosek nasuwa się sam, że Polacy byli na samym dole listy wartościowych ludzi. //
Uderza mnie w filmie jego zakończenie, bo ludzie idą na rzeź jak barany i zamiast tłumnie uciekać po plaży i być zabitym w trakcie ucieczki, woleli całkowicie ulegać rozkazom Niemców. Jako Polak, nie byłbym takim barankiem w rzeźni. / Proszę mi odpisać i podzielić się swymi myślami.

Francuzi gremialnie kolaborowali z Niemcami. Wyłapywali Żydów i całymi pociągami wysyłali ich do obozów. Posiadali dwie dywizje Waffen SS. Taka jest różnica miedzy nimi a nami. Amerykanie traktowali Francję jako państwo sojusznicze z Niemcami i mieli zamiar okupować ja. układy polityczne zmieniły te zamiary.

An interesting case study of collective punishment and collective responsibility. The Nantes group of 27 Communists who were not directly involved in the Holtz killing were nevertheless Nazi sympathizers until only a few months ago, when Moscow changed its tune. Prior to that, on the orders of Moscow, the French Communists aided the fall of France. The film mentions this, but doesn't dwell on it. Thus, as we see the later collective punishment of all Germans as justified for their active or complicit role in the war, why wouldn't the Communists' active role in the fall of France not be justification for their collective punishment, from the viewpoint of a French patriot?

Piękny film. Wojna jest przekleństwem nie tylko pokonanych, ale i zwycięzców. Każdy atak na wroga, nawet w słusznej sprawie, powinien być poprzedzony refleksją, czy warto ryzykować życie innych. Każdy francuski, czeski, polski, jugosłowiański zamach na jednego nazistę, zwykle powodował śmierć dziesiątek lub setek niewinnych zakładników. Te ofiary nie zmieniały losów wojny i tylko sprawiały, że była ona przekleństwem.

I apologize to any French people seeing this. As a person who loves history for the good & bad this movie was interesting to me. I’m not sure how accurate but the meaning is clear. The Nazi’s were evil! As a Veteran who served in Germany later had the privilege of serving with a French Medical Unit. The Colonel treated myself & another medic with dignity & his men were great, fellow medics. I’m only telling you this is considering the bad history of WW2 Soldiers find a way to unite in good times as well as bad.

What the Germans did in Poland is unimaginable. They attacked my homeland on September 1,1939, and their first victims were civilians. On September 17, 1939, the Soviets attacked us.

Je suis absolument contre le nazisme d'Hitler, mais ce film m'a rappelé ce que l'armée française a fait au peuple algérien. Dans les deux cas, cela se produit lorsque l etre human perd son humanité.

I couldn't finish the movie because I couldn't take it anymore, I tried hard not to shed tears but.....
Very intense and emotional. I didn't understand what if anything happened to the gendarmes after the war. Ihope they were brought to justice forsuch an act of betrayal to fellow Frenchmen.

Regardless of the (unknowable) percentage of German citizens who were not responsible for the many atrocities committed by their nation during the war, if I was in a position of authority among the allied forces after the war, I would NEVER HAVE ALLOWED my position to include the re-unification of Germany. For me, it would be justified to keep four small "mini" German states that would hopefully be too weak economically and militarily among the nations to EVER start another war. There are many fine comments here inspired by this movie. I hope mine was not too harsh. It could have been.
