Nomadic armies uniting under 1 rule was the bane of all Sedentary Empires during the era of pre gunpowder. The Mongols fought a 3 front war against China, several Islamic Empires and sultanates during the golden age of Islam, as well as the Kieven Rus and they still conquered these nations. The Huns displaced many Germanic tribes out of their homeland and brought both the Eastern and Western Roman Empire to its knees extorting massive tribute from both while devastating their territories, The Seljuks within ~60 years conquered much of the Islamic world from the Levant all the way to the Hindu Kush while also inflicting a devastating defeat against the Byzantines opening up Anatolia for conquest, the same Anatolia that stood like a bulwark for hundreds of years against the armies of the Umayyads and Abbasids.

That battle only killed a fraction of Hulegu's army under one of his lieutenants, most of the army that destroyed Baghdad (the greatest Muslim city at the time) and laid the Ayyubids to waste went back to Mongol territory with the main general Hulegu due to the death of the Great Khan. In fact Hulegu himself was planning another invasion but Berke, the leader of the Golden Horde faction of the Mongols and an Islam convert, chose to attack Hulegu as retribution for the destruction Hulegu cost in Baghdad, the sacking of which ended what had been the golden age of Islam. These Mongol civil war was what led to the weakening of Mongol power in the area and halted a potential European invasion thru Anatolia.

@@ronb7189 I do not agree with your opinion, my friend. The Mongols were a powerful force for which the world reckoned a thousand times, and the propaganda of terror that they spread in the world at that time alone was sufficient for their victory over all their enemies. Did you know that some countries that knew that the Mongols would attack them would surrender directly to them before the battle? and Many European historians acknowledged the fact that Muslims protected Europe from the Mongol encroachment

@@Daniel_77_ Berke was a technically a Muslim convert so you can say a Muslim general help break the Mongol Jaggernaut by attacking Hulagu and inciting a devastating Mongol civil war, but the battle of Ain Jalut was not what broke the Mongols, Hulegu and most of the army that just bulldoze Baghdad, Syria and much of the Levant was still there and who knows how the Mamluks would have fare against the full might of the Ill Khanate under the talented Hulegu.
We know that Baybars made a lot of effort to ally himself with the leaders of Golden Horde and incited them into attacking Hulegu's Ill Khanate, which just proves how great of a leader Baybars was, knowing his facing an enemy with more resources than he has, he used dirty diplomacy to greatly weaken his enemies while he strengthen his own position.

For its time, yes probably. But i dont think he was greater/better than Hannibal Barca or Alexander the great. He just fits into this list of the greatest commanders of all time. There is not really a best of all history. Alexander the great and Hannibal Barca, both lived in a different time. So each had their advantages and disadvantages. Also each great commander had their fair amount of luck, so yeah a 'Best commander in all of history ' does not really exist, that might just be more of a personal thing. @@Zlav963 Yeah for sure, im not denying that. But i think Khalid is not the only one who was capable of doing so. What you just named is all part of a great commander. and Khalid belongs to one of the greatest commanders of all time.
But he is not the only one, take at Hannibal Barca, leading and fighting his way through the alps with a huge army. And losing half in the process, but still be capable of defeating every roman army in his way to Rome. Or Alexander, leading his men through extreme conditions towards babylon and capturing all of the persian Empire. Napoleon defeating every single oponent, often outnumbered and outsmarted his enemies. Admiral Michiel de Ruyter, defeated both the french and English fleet in once while he was outnumbered. Saladin, was great leader with many skills. He had great military, political and chivalry skills. He was a generous and humble man, often respected by his enemies. And ofcourse Khalid also belongs to the same category.
You cannot really say who is better, think all of these commanders were the best of their time until they lost momentum, got too old, lost 1 battle etc. A new supreme commander somewhere else would show his amazing abilities. So once again i think it is a personal preference, wich is absolutely fine. But calling one of them 'the best of all history' is very unfair towards the other great commanders. There is just a small selection of the greatest commanders of all time and sure Khalid belongs into that selection. :)

    • @Zlav963
      @Zlav963 2 месяца назад +10

@@ShadowGearFive that's exactly the point my friend: "until they lost momentum, lost one battle".. that's exactly my "personal and humble" take, that i agreed with those (scholars in their craft) who said Khalid is and will never be matched historically by any army commander, because he didnt lose a battle as a army commander nor as a soldier nor even as a man to man fight in the heart of the desert. It's strange, in our human nature there is the defeat, loss, failure etc.. his goal (as they said) was to die as a Martyr, he even was crying so sad on the death bed mocking himself dying of illness and old age fatigue, and not in the battlefield. Believe me if Khalid was in Hannibal's place, he would have won the besiege of Rome, or would have fought to death and not poisoning himself.

Muslims do not fight for money or power, but rather they fight for their religion and their strength in their religion, because their religion is the truth in the midst of this great darkness. The strength of Muslims comes to them from heaven. May God grant them victory because they are the ones who actually represent the religion of the Lord. I have begun to recite the Qur’an, and it seems that I will embrace Islam in the near future, and I hope. All religions and humanity should recognize this tolerant, courageous religion with strong beliefs🤍🤍

a Pakistani general wrote a detailed very well researched instrument that covered Khalid ibn Waleed's campaigns put together with scientific and military logic to perfection presented in his book 'The sword of Allah'. It's available on the internet, a high recommend.
And as for the numbers, three to one superiority against muslim arab army was not a crisis. The Arabs had been thrashing that kind of opposition very conveniently. However this was a contest beyond their normal battle days. The situation was so dire that the Muslim army commander Abu Obaida understood it as beyond his capability and he quietly relented his position to Khalid.
So I believe the Byzantine army strength to be anything around 175,000 solde8rs give or take, whereas the Muslims were in the range of about 40,000 not a very well equipped army.

The first Islamic armies defeated the cataphracts and mounted archers even though they were mostly light lancer cavalry
    some factors :
    - the use of camels instead of horses for transportation, which keeps the horses fresh , in addition to the great endurance of the Arab horse and the lightness of the armor of the Arab horsemen which means that the Arab horsemen can move in the battlefield for a longer time than the Sassanid or Byzantine one so he can exhaust them with hit and run repeatedly, then finished them off with a fatal blow using his very long lance " The Arab horsemen used long lances that reached up to five meters "
    - using a large number of foot archers to support cavalry movements , also their bows were stronger than their enemies bows
    - the ability to cross the desert thanks to camels
    - but the most important factor remains the massive religious fervor that allowed the early Islamic armies to withstand the attacks of the cataphracts without fleeing because withstanding a cavalry attack is the best tactic to defeat it while fleeing is the fatal mistake in the face of a cavalry attack

I just want to highlight on the decisive role of Muslim women, either when they let the camels loose to frighten the enemy horses, to throwing stones on retreating solders, and up to taking arms and going into battle themselves. How brave, how beliving, how thoughtful...
We need no feminisim, our women have always been honored and respected, they raised the best families, and deserved to be treated as the queens they were.
May allah be pleased with them all.
If we want Muslim Ummah to get back to its glory we must get these treats back into our women...

Khalid was so sad that he did not die as a Martyr on the battlefield. " I've fought in so many battles seeking martyrdom that there is no spot in my body left without a scar or a wound made by a spear or sword. And yet here I am, dying on my bed like an old camel. May the eyes of the cowards never rest" he said. The wife of Khalid, upon feeling such pain of her husband told Khalid: "You were given the title of 'Saif-ullah' meaning, 'The Sword of Allah' and, the sword of Allah is not meant to be broken and hence, it is not your destiny to be a 'martyr' but to die like a conqueror."
