Bought this right away. This is by far the best overdrive I ever had.
Mister Henning Vahlbruch is a VERY underrated Pedal builder. I'm glad that the word is starting to spread. I have an Octavia (Fuzz) and a Quantum (Parallel Compressor), that kicked my old Diamond Comp off my board. Incredibly well built and quiet (meaning having a low noise floor) too.
The Shawn Tubbs Appreciation Society is here. Gather around, the gear is just an excuse.
Nailed it Ash!
So true man, haha. I could watch Shawn play a $5 guitar through a cigar box amp all day.
$5 guitar thru a cigar box amp, you heard what the people wants Mr. Tubbs, pls make it happen!
the pedal sounds great - but lets give a big shout out to the really tasty playing in the intro solo. Lovin' that!
Have had a 72 hour Monday this week. Thank you for providing me a brief escape Mr Tubbs. Tone for days and such great phrasing.
Thanks so much Bryan!
Love the responsiveness of this pedal! Amazing!
Another Tubbsy master class! Nice tones, nice playing, great demo.Sounds like a distortion pedal should! Thanks mate for showing the versatility. Your comments are pure gold! Five stars! ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Great demo. I really appreciate the fact that you demonstrated the pedal’s range, and how well it cleans up when rolling back the guitar volume.
I recently picked up a Kaluna, partly because of your excellent demo, and I’m really enjoying it.
I’m really impressed with how well it takes to being boosted. I have it set for a nice low gain crunch and I’m boosting it with a Catalinbread Naga Viper treble booster. This combination covers everything from jangly clean, to rhythm crunch, to saturated lead tones.
Well done. Thanks!
So killer Shawn. Undoubtedly the most tasteful RUclips guitar player.
Great pedal, excellent, comparably neutral but beautiful and natural and organic tube sound, I would say, which is very flexible customizable due to the fantastically working tone controls, which really allow a great adjustment to almost every other gear, as the Kaluna does not have any sweet spots, but works equally good with every possible setting, depending on the rest of your setup.
On the one hand not the cheapest pedal, on the other hand, if you own this one, you most probably can sell a lot of not so good sounding tubeless pedals immediately, I think.
Addition after one year of use: I even sold my PlexiTone, as the Kaluna offers a more balanced sound and - for me important - does not cut any bass with the right setting and also does not add these typical too shrill transistor or op-amp treble high frequencies, which most tubeless pedals produce, even if they in principle may be good.
The Kaluna also works almost noiseless, opposite to a lot of other pedals, so, if your amp gives you an almost noiseless signal, if cranked up, a Kaluna in front hardly will make an additional noise gate necessary.
This really is professional work! Using different tubes also makes a difference, but for me the stock JJ ECC83S really work fine, also the JJ ECC803 for some beefier low end, while hotter tubes, like eg. the 12AX7LPS or the Ruby 12AX7 AC5 HG+ do not necessarily improve the sound very much.
Tube replacement is easy, if compared with a lot of other pedals, so you can experiment, if you like.
Also a wonderful standalone recording solution, in combination with a good cabinet IR.
Highly recommended!
Completely dfferent league than a Tube Screamer, even than a Klon Centaur, Timmy or PlexiTone, if you look for authentic tube sounds. You get two more real tube gain stages for your amp plus an incredibly well working tone control, which rather acts like some additional, frequency-dependant gain controls and this usually is in most cases more than enough for improving almost every (tube) amp.
I could really hear your attack control the amount of drive in the opening rhythm part. Sweet spot found!
Love the descending lick from 0:28 to 0:31! I can almost play it at speed! Another great intro piece. Whenever I see that brown PRS McCarty come out, I know the soloing is gonna get crazy!
YOW! Superb playing up front, and a sufficiently intensive run-through of the pedal's capabilities to place it in the running with the other tube pedals I'm currently considering (Hagerman & Kingsley). You're so right about running the tubes at spec voltage. It's crucial to getting the same kind of dynamic response you get from a tube amp. I'll bet it's even sweeter with another 12AX7 in the signal chain, like in the power amp section of a Matchless amp coming into the effects return. Thanks for a great demo!
I agree with all the posts - the gear reviews are great (very informative) but Shawn's playing is really the "icing on the cake."
10:55 ago "No more pedals". 10:55 later "1 more pedal".
me too!
😂welcome to pedal addiction. It’s never ending.
Ahhh... me too 🥴
Very nice playing and very good sounding pedal. Tube overdrives seem to make a come back!
What a great guitarplayer.
Very danceable intro, one that lends itself nicely to an interpretive soft shoe kind of thing. Thank you for that.
That one sounds really good to my ears.
“Me no know” ... that always cracks me up
Maybe digital hasn't trumped tubes quite yet after all. This adds that silky, thick hair to the notes and chords, I heard it right away! Sounds great as a clean preamp base too. Sounded great through the Bella (tube amp) I have to wonder if it could work some magic in front of a Katana 100. Outstanding opener by the way!
digital isn't close to matching, much less beating, real tubes, maybe in the next 40 years we might see that change
Sounds great. Can't wait for a model of it on my helix
Want to know what's so amazing about Shawn? No matter what gear he is demonstrating... he always sounds like Shawn Tubbs! :)
Brilliant demo....!!! Happy New Year Shawn!!
Awe man, thanks so much Doug! Happy New Year to you and your family!
That intro song was amazing!
Ace tone, ace playing! This is the first video of yours I've seen, but I'm subbing pronto.
Thanks very much, Rick I truly appreciate the support!
Sound excellent! Full of quality tone indeed... Really usable tone controls
Sounds awesome Shawn🎉😎
This is like a one-Channel Mesa V-Twin which i used for years. My ideal OD would be two these in one pedal, two sets of the same set of five knobs, two 12AX7's (or equivalent) with one channel mild to crunch and the other channel high gain - turn any clean amp into 3-channel monster with one pedal....
Check the Koch Pedaltone. It does that and much more than just that. Unfortunately there aren't many demo's of this pedal online. And the ones that are suck. But I can assure you, with that pedal you're fully covered. It's awesome.
Also check out the Sherlock Amplifiers V3 pedal. Sounds like what your after...
Matthew Quin agreed...I have two boards with two Sherlocks. It is so flexible, sounds amazing and takes other pedals really great. They are really the core of my tone.
@@gtmuse329A funny you say that they have become the core of my tone as well. So flexible with tones
@ShawnTubbs I think this is another earworm! I found myself humming the hook from last week's Seymour Duncan video while setting up my tent in the backwoods last Friday night.
Awesome Demo, awesome Pedal. 👌
Lovely and expressive as usual
If I may: I love the classic crunch / soft overdriven tone you get most of the time. I myself play with a similar one, through an always on OD (CmatMods Super Signa), piloting the clean to overdriven tone from the guitar's volume pot. One thing I noticed though is that varying guitars from the Suhr Tele to the PRS McCarty, the Start Suhr or the LSL, you have a tendency to tweak the sound to your (and my) favorite tone, thus not putting forward the difference you can obtain with the various guitars/pickups... Isn't that the purpose of a demo ? Showing all variations you can get from a pedal, running it with a bunch of different guitars ? Another way to put it: why play an array of guitars with different structures/pickups, if it is to end up with the same tone ? My 2¢... ;-)
Another world class demo, always gives us something to take away from your channel. Thank you Shawn for your consistent quality video. God bless you and your family💜
You're very kind. Thanks so much for the encouragement.
It really is a great sounding pedal
Ok dude. Time for another album release. I’ve played Demolition so much the MP3s are scratched.... Great video BTW. You have sold me sold much musical equipment....
Thanks so much for the kind words. I'll get at another album one of these days! Thanks again. Best, Shawn
I bought the pedal. Just not able to capture your warmth and recorded tone. When you start those licks with the white Suhr. I’m getting giddy I’ve been working hard to get it down.
Great demo as always
Very touch sensitive! Digging it!
Man... there is a good bit of Dumble OD Special in that pedal. I would have liked to hear it into a totally clean amp with the master turned up and the gain down (which you did at 8:00 but with a touch more gain). I bet the dynamics and breakup levels of the Dumble are in there.
Great sounding pedal
Bro... What do think... Live or Studio... It sounds like one of the very best pedal circuits you have done a demo on... But, would you use it live?
We all know studio is a whole different game... thx, Bandalora
very nice, can you please the link for backtrack to jam on :)
KILLER playing!
Killin it as usual
great demo as always !
btw, the bass sounds great, you ..?
Thanks, Embree! Yes, it's always yours truly on the big strings struggling with the lows. ;)
Great demo as always Shawn! Anxiously waiting for you to post some new lick lessons. I've stolen so much of you (and learned) I'm starting to feel guilty...almost.😁
Thanks so much, Mark! Yes, I do indeed need to get back on the lick lessons.
Reminds me a little of the compression of those rare tube Boogie clone pedals from the late 80s "Bogie"?? Can't remember the name. They also used a tube. Great sound but not a foundation tone for me personally.
Shawn, when are you going to update us on your board?
I really need to get back to getting the new board built. It's really just boiling down to acquiring the finances and time. Sorry, it's taking so long.
@@ShawnTubbs I hear you about finances. No pressure, just an exited, loyal viewer wanting to learn more from you.
Just know, when you do that video, it is going to get a THOROUGH viewing A LOT of times 😂
Peace
Is this song in the lession pack included?
Thanks for the question Alex. That lesson pack is based around an album I did called "Demolition".
Great demo, thanks, what is the brand of the first guitar (goldie) in the video? Thanks
Thanks very much. That guitar is a Suhr Alt T.
Great sounds
where do I find that backing track. very cool. and your playing is testicle crunching!!!!!!!!!!
The the hell could dislike this video??
That a guitarists with bad ears. VERY BAD EARS!!! 😡
I usually dislike my own videos at some point. ;)
The bad thing about Shawn Tubbs reviewing gear, is he makes me want to buy more gear, hah.
That's why they hire him....
And if i DO buy something he's demoed, for some unbeknown reason, it sounds like crap when i play it. Can't quite put my finger on why that might be!
Pretty awesome Shawn...as always. Thanks j-)
I'd really like to know how they get 250v from 9v's?
So tasty!!!
Thanks, Marc! Hope you're doing well!
Sounds great!
1:25 Awesome!!
What's the ampage internally?
shawn tubbs, does this pedal have any Internal Bias control? is it a 12AX7 tube?
Yes its a 12ax7 but i dont know about bias im thinking no though.
Yes, it's a 12AX7 but there's no adjustable bias control that I know of. You could reach out to Henning and see what he says about it.
Preamp tubes are cathode biased. There's no adjustment. Only Fixed-bias power tubes have an adjustment.
Very good overdrive...
I have a wish: if it is possible, please make a video with the new DIEZEL VHX !
I've not had any experience with Diezel's pedals. I'm sure they're great.
Shawn Tubbs Hi Shawn, the Diezel VHX is a revolutionary new amp.
@@harrybee3093 Ah I see. Cool! I'll check it out.
Shawn Tubbs they are Shawn the VH4 is really great sounding and feeling. Like the amp imo but cheaper. 😉
@@Utube-g3g I am talking about the VHX, not the VH4!
Hi shawn, please send it the chords and the licks to this track! it's amazing. thank's
How would this work in conjunction with the TC Plethora?
I don't have any experience with the TC Plethora. Thanks for watching Mike and for the question.
Nice Groove 👏👏,,,🏆
So.... This vs the Friedman smallbox pedal?
They're both great pedals. The Smallbox has a bit more bark to it. The Kaluna is a bit smoother IMO.
@@ShawnTubbs I think I need both : )
Anybody compare to the Tubesteader Beekeeper? In the market.
Oh hell yes! Sounds fabulous Shawn!
Thanks so much, Gary!!
Wait.. I am confused. It says "High Voltage Tube Drive", yet the power supply says 9VDC. Are they doing that silly "starving voltage" thing with the tube because a "High Voltage Tube" should be run at 400VDC, not 9VDC.
Nope, I suspect, although I can't say for certain, that they are using a Voltage Multiplier circuit. It's an arrangement of a ladder of diodes and capacitors, which basically do what it says on the tin:- namely multiply an AC voltage to a higher DC voltage. They claim it is running at 250V, which is entirely possible, depending on the configuration of the multiplier. To run the heater on the tube, you only need 6.3 V AC, at a certain current, and at 240V bias, it won't consume much current...
Here is an article on the basics of a VM.... en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Voltage_multiplier
I saw that it runs at 250V. I had thought the Tubes needed to run had higher voltages like 400V and you need to run with a transformer. I have had a few 12V Tube pedals that all sounded like crap. The Rocktron Silver Dragon used a analog "TS" type circuit to boost the pedal. It sucked because you could not use the other side of the circuit. Moen made one too. I traded a guy for a modded Metal Zone. The pedal does have me curious. :)
@@txwylde pretty certain 400V ism ay to much for a AX7/ECC83 type tube. here is a typical set of figures for this whole series of small triode tubes ,and note they are all listed at 250V. www.r-type.org/articles/art-184.htm
I'm no expert, but 400V sounds like the voltage rail required for the big output tubes to driver the transformer/speaker network in a powerful amplifier, such as 6L6s which seem to run between 350-400 depending on which particular model is in question.
Tim, you might be right. It has been too long since I have been under the hood of boards with glowing tubes. ;)
@@txwylde amps run at 400v on the power tubes, but drops at eqch filtering stage. By the time it's filtered, the first preamp tube is often around 150-200 volts. 12ax7 are decent at anything above 100v.
The idea of this switch is: it is NO mechanical switch, that means it has no mechanical contacts. When you pressing the switch, underneath is a magnet, which comes closer to a special kind of sensor. This sensor switches on or off, if the switch is pressed or not. So, no mechanical krackling, no failure. Instead million times of noiseless free switching. That's the "secret" of this switch.
like to hear this in front of a Dirty Shirley set to mid gain and using this as a solo boost
I bought one.. KILLER pedal It doesn't sound or feel like a stomp box! into the DS set clean it sounds and acts like the amp's over drive.. used as a solo boost it kills, I am setting it up on a board in front of Strymon Iriidium for use direct or with the Iridium bypassed for use in front of an amp.
You’re lines are to good...
W×2³dfsz
Joyo American does similar stuff for a fraction of the price !
Not really. Joyo builds good stuff for the money but the American is based on more of a Fender voiced amp as apposed the the Kaluna which is very Marshall in nature. The Kaluna is also a tube driven circuit that runs at proper voltage which is rare in the "tube driven" pedal world. The feel alone from the Kaluna would be worth the extra money over the Joyo.
@@ShawnTubbs played through gretch it sounds Marshall enough . I'm sure that side to side the différence should be heard easily but through the recording don't hear it to be of something extraordinaire .
Joyo what a comparison to the kaluna and a Joke at the same time...🙈
@@mrchrispychicken Calm down groopy, sit down and read my commentary again .Yes , for a fraction of price I can get same shitty sound the video let us hear.
@@orestlysak6770 what's that supposed. The kaluna is an outstanding sounding Pedal, also in this Video.
This pedal sounds awesome, but I feel like germanium transistors are the “tubes” of the pedal world.
Can't get any idea of the sound of the pedal when your just doing lead riffs
10:26
when someone say you are no Shawn Tubbs you can say, stop shaunshaming me,
High voltage tube overdrive...runs on 9 v dc🤣
Your tone always sounds pretty much the same to me no matter the rig....... kinda dark and chewy.
