Great feature. I tend to have this issue with bib shorts too. At around 78kg and 183cm tall, so you'd think I'd fall into the clothing brands sizing criteria pretty well. However, my thighs seem long for my leg length, and most shorts, if they fit in the pad and backside areas will be too short on the leg. Some good advice in the video about what to look for. Despite riding for over 30 years, I didn't appreciate, "long", bibs were a thing!
Somebody already mentioned it but Black Bibs makes a tall version of their bibs with extra length, though honestly, I find their regular sized bibs already a bit long... then again, I like my shorts to fit shorter.
I am the same dimensions as Rides of Japan and have tried a ton of bibs. I also recommend the Black Bibs long version size small. Can’t beat the price and quality honestly.
Hello, second comment as I've just remembered the Castelli oomloop bib shorts are EXTRA long, and go almost over most mere mortal's knees. They came out a few years back for pros to use in the spring classics, and I've seen them used by real pro racers I know and they all say how good they are [not paid to] So they could be perfect.
Just 1 minute into this video and directly feel so adressed! I am very close to your sizing. Thank you for catching this topic! I am 186cm and 60kg. Doing quite good with Santini Bibs, because they have very (!) good grippers on the higher end products and so leg length is okay for me. Best one I have is an old one from 2XU in size XS but sadly this was discontinued. Still searching for a cargo bib but without luck yet...
Let me throw in another potential option. I'm 184cm/85kg and have quite big thighs. Size M always works for me, but recently I brought bib shorts from Morvélo and they are unbelievable long. So long in fact, that I need to think twice before wearing them on a sunny day, because the tan line will be just above the kneecap. *I just checked their website and the sizing chart says inside leg length to be 32cm for both M and S!
Endura makes long in certain models. Check carefully before ordering because the ‘normal’ length , which is the default, is egregious. Also, Pactimo make long in certain models. Long to them is 26.5 cm. An aside on Pactimo leg warmers and tights- they make them with zippers at the ankles. Super good feature not found from hardly any other mfr. . There’s also a nice thermal tight without pad- a nice option seldom seen. Pactimo seems to have it together.
I have this problem somewhat, but my hips and quads are not skinny, but I’m still wearing a small with a 27” waist and 34” hips. I can’t wear bibs though I hate straps. Roka only offers their bib shorts on special, but they do offer an 11” inseam over the 9”, that’s a great length for me. I cut off the straps and I like the laser cut hem they have.
191cm /64kg and all legs. I know that struggle. My Rapha Pro Team V1 "long" work good for me, as well as their insulated version. I recently picked up a La passione PSN Bibshorts. It works well. But the absolut Bang for the bucks/Budget recommendation I have is the Sportful Neo Bibshorts. Longer then all the others, very comfy (even for 300km!) and you can pick them up for 50-60€ in Europe.
Fun fact. 7 mesh was formed by arcteryx employees (high end outdoor gear, ultrasonic welded seams, only company that gore allows to work with goretex in their won factory. Alot of 7 meshes has simmilar high end construction as my mountaineering gear. The price they're asking for compared to other brands is super reasonable. I'm a small in 7 mesh but I'm 6ft 4 and about 195lbs. Built like a sprinter skinny waist thick thighs and big upper body.
It's usually always hard to find general manufactured apparel, that fits perfectly in every situation. Custom built apparel would be ideal, but not everyone can spend the time and money, for custom fit apparel.
As an XXL (heading towards XL) I can’t find anything in Japan and have found ordering Rapha (when on sale) has been good for me at the other end of the spectrum.
I'm at the opposite end of the scale: I have very thick thighs for my height (183 cm) and I find myself quite often having to choose between bib shorts which fit the upper side of my body just fine but are way too tight on the thighs and bib shorts which properly fit my calves but stay way too loose on the body and shoulders. And the irony is that the models I've been used for years have started becoming tighter and tighter on the thighs for the same size as newer iterations were put on the market up to the point I had to move up from a size L to a size XL (even though all my other pairs of bib shorts are size L). And of course, because of that, the chamois-covered area is bigger than previously as well and is therefore misaligned.
Judging by the comments this far, there seem to be quite a few outliers in both directions... you would think that some brand would pick up 😔 (without going custom tailored)
I'm 190cm, 70kg and for jeans my waist size is 30 inches. I only have one pair so far, from Castelli. Not sure about the model, but it might be a Velocissimo. But I did get it in XL and its skin tight everywhere. Unfortunately I don't have any comparison when it comes to the padding (only a MTB short with padding, but not really comparable), but I'm usually pretty comfortable in my Castelli on rides up to 100km. Will keep an eye on the padding situation though, maybe I was simply satisfied because it was better than no padding at all ^^
Well, hello from the other side of the spectrum. It sucks to be down there, too. Pretty hard to find bibs for a shorty with wider base. Ended up with 7mesh and Castelli..
Great video! Well I am 194 cm and 90 kg, so bibshorts is not really a problem for me. But my achilles' heel is head tube length and frame geometry. I think a lot a bike companies mess up the geometry and the looks of bikes by putting in a >20cm head tube, so your basically riding around looking like a bus with the agility of an aircraft carrier
Ridley are good for good stack geometry, if you need more head tube. Strong bikes for big powerful riders. Trek in their S2 geometry does longer headtubes. I'm 194cm and 83 kg
@@jamiewellington6208 This summer I tried bibshorts from "Rose" here in Germany as a budget option. Size XL and I have nothing to complain. If you are a bit lighter, maybe L is enough but XL feels super solid for me
(188 cm / 64 kg.) I’ve never found bibs that fit right and probably never will. Some people will suggest the Black Bibs. A lot of people like them. They’re definitely cheap but I found they feel cheap too-they chafe horribly after ~1.5 hours or so. I’ve liked some stuff from Gore just because the straps and legs are often very stretchy but the inseams are a bit short. And I have found consistently that even the nicest Pearl Izumi shorts are super short + have straps that crush my 🥜. I’m going to try the Enduras out. Thanks for the rec and video fellow spider 🙏
I'm exactly that height and weight, and I've been solely running Pactimo for the last 8+ years because it's the only bib w/ a cuff that fits me properly. I always run size small. And the shoulder straps have plenty of stretch and never tight or pulling down.
I'm currently 185cm and 72kg... so not in this very refined category... however. I think my new Albion Cycling ABR1 Bib Shorts might be perfect for you. The length goes almost to my knee and I have a pretty long leg to body ratio. They're su[er comfy, and the straps on the shoulders are very stretchy but support well. They do world wide shipping too. Nice one.
Rich Mitch I’ve gotten the same recommendation for a lot of “medium riders” 😉 The leg length difference between medium and small is more that most seem realize. But I appreciate the tip non the less 👍
I'm 203cm and 88kg, I've been using castelli endurance shorts, size medium. Given up on bibs... Have no problem with no shoulder straps. I don't find them to be excessively short, but I used to be a split short wearing competitive runner, so don't listen to me 🤣
Your videos are getting so professional, NJ! This was pretty funny for me, I used to wrestle decades ago. With your measurements, if you wrestled, you would be referred to as a spider lol. If you were ontop you could drape your arms and legs totally around an opponent on all fours, easily, which is why we would refer to you as a spider. I was about 10 lbs lighter than you and 5" shorter. Now I am 20 lbs heavier than you (healthier weight). Your mentioning the reference for how you measure is great. I went to bibs, so comfortable and it reminds me of wrestling - similar shoulder straps. Nukeproof has a bib that has ample length, you might try that but maybe not the quality you are looking for. The legs are a bit big though. 2 rear pockets and 2 minis on each thigh, which i love. I now wear baggies, i have a plastic bottle shirt that works great, not having a shirt hugging me, plus my gut is a bit big. For trails and shopping i like wearing an mtb overpant - wiping out on the trails easily puts holes in our expensive bibs, a bit hot, but not bad for wet commutes, shopping and off roading. Thx again for your great vids. I love your background wheel. I am thinking of making a lamp from an old 26" wheel, i gave one wheel to someone who's brake track delaminated.
As a fellow freak(188c 160#) I find Specialized has some well fitting bibs, also Gore Bike has several in both summer and winter constructions below and above the knee. I also like endura and Sugoi
I have been rocking the endura sl long legs for 2 months now, super happy with them. 193cm / 70kg, always have problems with cycling clothing. Do you have any recomendations for jerseys? They are often too short for size M for me too.
I’ve found the Void jerseys has been a nice fit for me in small. although it was a few seasons ago I bought a rapha aero jersey and sized up to medium, got some of that length while still have a decently tight fit.
This focuses heavily on the leg but at 6’4” my issue has always been the bib pulling down on my shoulders/neck, even with size large. I gave up. It would be nice to have adjustable straps. I just wear shorts and don’t bother anymore.
I am 180cm, 95kg with short legs, big ass and thights. I have not one piece of gear that fits me. I need size 2xl bibs to even get in and then they are way to long. Castelli Gabba Jacket in 2xl, still feels too tight around upper arms and armpits, at the Same time sleeves are about 10cm to long. This is so frustrating.
Nice Video as always, I love your stuff... and its really interesting in which areas one can dig to become a little bit strange ;-) . 2cm is not so serious if you cope with tan lines two cm higher as usual or if you have a 2cm shorter Pant and one of your prefered length, you will get two tan lines with a nice tricolore.
you know, people with athletic build have it hard too. Many clothes of different brands are too tight in chest area in size L and too big in belly area in size XL. The same with long trousers, if something fits on my thigs it will be too big in the ankle xD
Theoretically this video isnt for me as I can wear a size medium bib with 183cm and ~70kg. But with spider legs, it is also hard to find a well fitting bib. I went for Gore (I think C7) and it is a tad short, but has awesome straps. My favourite is the Rapha Core Cargo bib with its excellent pad and length. The straps could be a little longer. A mix of these two would be perfekt I guess.
Great idea to raise this topic! I am 193 cm and 72 kg. So the Endura is probably best. BUT how about the quality of the shammy’s? That is very important as well!
I have no issues with the shammy, then again, never had any issues with shammy on bibshorts I’m this level. Only time I had problem was on cheap custom “club kit” back in the day. I should however mentioned that you can choose the shammy width on the endura bib.
I'm only 175cm (71kgs(big ass I think)) but have the same problem with leg length. I've been using the Endura Pro SL. I first tried the minimal pad, but that isn't good for long rides, gone over to the medium pad; at the moment only on the turbo trainer, but have to admit I'm not impressed with the padding on Endura so far.
Tldr short recommendation at the end. Ok so I'm am almost your exact measurements + 1cm in height. I have also struggled with bib length, and I had the v1 of the maap bibs for a long time. For me, those were great, but would sometimes slip. I tried the endura bibs, and like you said the length was great. Likewise, I also didn't like that they didn't have a gripper band and were just lazer cut. My biggest problem, however, was the height of the short up my stomach. It just really was not tall enough, and I would get a gap between the shorts and my small-xsmall jerseys if I stood upright, so for like the last couple of months I've been looking for bibs that were tall up the front. I tried the eroe bibs that someone commented. Those were still short and didn't stay in place for me, but were exceptionally tall up front. I just tried the le col pro blackout bibs in a small, and these are perfect!! Nice, big leg grippers, really long (13 cm from the front of the knee/ 28-29 cm on person), and tall enough that they even cover my belly button so there is no gap to my jersey. Try them out! Tldr: Try the le col pro bibs, it's like they are built specifically for lanky people.
Interesting topic! You need to visit an alterations tailor 😁 The Endura pro SL long leg is now my "go to" bib short. Im 188cm, 79 kg and always find normal sizes way too short. Except my thighs are not skinny like yours - 41cm at the short leg opening. I went for the narrow pad (why do they offer wider pads??)
I was really struggling to decide witch pad size to go with, always preferred larger pads (oddly enough) so went with medium, it works fine but I will definitely try the small pad if I get another pair.
@@ridesofjapan ah, maybe because i use an ism saddle where there the contact point is a bit further back. I've got the shorts in narrow and medium pad and can't notice a difference. But i don't know of other brands that offer diffenrt size pads. I guess more choice is never a bad thing 😁
Great video, thanks for the advice. I also mountain bike and prefer not to wear road bib shorts. Most mountain shorts way too baggy. Any advice for slim fit mountain bike shorts, even without pad inserts. Thanks
Heard so many conflicting reports about La Passione in terms of length, I don't think they make them any longer than maap/attaquer etc unfortunately. They look great though, and have a nice price tag.
@@ridesofjapan I guess you're right, my La Passione bib inside seam measured at 26cm (lay flat), mind you it's size XS, and my leg's inseam-to-knee measured at 33cm (measured standing)
6ft, 220... equally as hard for us bigger guys to find kit... PITA... If only one of the lux brands would make the adjustable (dual seam where they can be cut to accommodate thinner guys and dual leg seams so us thicker guys don’t have to have them extend beyond our knees... Etc.
Great vid as always!!! 1 suggestion: have you considered some leg strength training? It would definitely help in the glutes tigh areas and riding in general ;)
Well, I have zero useful comment to add here seeing as I’m 174cm/88kg so have the opposite problem. Tree trunks, anyone? My most comfortable bibs (Castelli premio?) are too long and buying winter tights that fit is basically impossible. So for me it Rule#5 🙄. Do Endura have a “stumpy” fit too, please? 🤣
Katusha ICON Long bibs - I have some and they are just brilliant. They add 4.5cm to their normal bib and they fit me a treat. I'm 185cm, 68kg, with a slim and V-E-R-Y long leg length, and these grip my skinny legs perfectly and look and work great. I take a medium and they come to just above my knee - the inseam measures at 30cm using your scientific measurement method, which is exactly what Katusha say they are. They say size Small measures 29cm, so I've no reason to believe it won't be true. I just checked the Katusha website and it looks like they don't have any available at the moment, but when available again, definitely worth checking them out. They do have Small in stock at Bike24 - ON SALE - if they ship to Japan. Good luck - and keep creating the entertaining content

All in all, I really appreciate your advise and videos 👍
Shawn Gannon just size you chain for the biggest cassette, you can use a longer chain on a smaller cassette no problem, but a chain that is too short is too short :) So there is no “in between”. size for the big cassette 👍

I'll throw in a personal favorite and tip: the Gore C7 long distance bibs.
How much do u weight and how tall r u? Looking to see if they'd work for me given your size
SIX2 bib shorts, great fabric and pad (subjective, I know), longer leg length than usual on my other bib shorts and comfortable straps.
191cm 60kg here (I'm 16 so nothing to worry about). Sounds like I should give rapha a go then
Video right up my alley! 198cm, 80kg. Also have the Endura bibshorts! Absolutely love them :)
You wear size M? I'm similar proportions
@@davomccranko I wear a L, fabric fits nice 'n tight :)
I have the same issue. Currently, I feel good in these bib shorts, Castelli free aero race 4 bibshort and Biehler bibshort. For your reference.
Take the loose fitting ones to a tailor. If you have an old one worn out elsewhere you can add length from those.
Bibs are expensive enough as it is ;)
As an XXL (heading towards XL) I can’t find anything in Japan and have found ordering Rapha (when on sale) has been good for me at the other end of the spectrum.
I'm scrawny, and I like the info on this video. I've noticed that with my Specialized bibs...they are looser in the leg opening that I'd like.
Will keep an eye on the padding situation though, maybe I was simply satisfied because it was better than no padding at all ^^
It’s been a while, great to see another vlog.👍
Well, hello from the other side of the spectrum. It sucks to be down there, too. Pretty hard to find bibs for a shorty with wider base. Ended up with 7mesh and Castelli..
Great video! Well I am 194 cm and 90 kg, so bibshorts is not really a problem for me. But my achilles' heel is head tube length and frame geometry. I think a lot a bike companies mess up the geometry and the looks of bikes by putting in a >20cm head tube, so your basically riding around looking like a bus with the agility of an aircraft carrier
Out of interest what size bib and brand do you wear? I'm a same height and a few kg lighter and never been too happy with the clothing I go for
Ridley are good for good stack geometry, if you need more head tube.
If you are a bit lighter, maybe L is enough but XL feels super solid for me
Eliel Cycling make nice bib shorts with 28cm (11") inseam. Made in California. I love mine. Longest ride has been 375km
Chris Shimonkevitz Noted, guess I’ll try Pactimo then. Thanks for the rec. Can’t beat finding someone with the exact same measurements
If you want a winter weight bibshort, Castelli Omloop is worth a try
I'm currently 185cm and 72kg... so not in this very refined category... however. I think my new Albion Cycling ABR1 Bib Shorts might be perfect for you. The length goes almost to my knee and I have a pretty long leg to body ratio. They're su[er comfy, and the straps on the shoulders are very stretchy but support well. They do world wide shipping too. Nice one.
Rich Mitch what size are you wearing?
@@ridesofjapan just checked, i'm clearly a big lad ;-) I'm a medium... reckon you'd be smaller for sure. But the kit is brilliant quality.
Rich Mitch I’ve gotten the same recommendation for a lot of “medium riders” 😉
The leg length difference between medium and small is more that most seem realize. But I appreciate the tip non the less 👍
I'm 203cm and 88kg, I've been using castelli endurance shorts, size medium. Given up on bibs... Have no problem with no shoulder straps. I don't find them to be excessively short, but I used to be a split short wearing competitive runner, so don't listen to me 🤣
I saw Isoles out of Denmark make long leg versions of their bibs.
I am thinking of making a lamp from an old 26" wheel, i gave one wheel to someone who's brake track delaminated.
hey brother im 5 foot 5....126lbs CRAFT train pack bibs are good try the HALE glow craft bibs......for taller guys
2:52 good god man.
As a fellow freak(188c 160#) I find Specialized has some well fitting bibs, also Gore Bike has several in both summer and winter constructions below and above the knee. I also like endura and Sugoi
Spider team : 1m83 and 86cm inseam.
Rapha cargo bib in small is ok for me. Assos in small is not ok for exemple.
I have been rocking the endura sl long legs for 2 months now, super happy with them. 193cm / 70kg, always have problems with cycling clothing. Do you have any recomendations for jerseys? They are often too short for size M for me too.
I feel you, 193cm 75 kg. when I stand you can always see my belly button. I am desperate.
I’ve found the Void jerseys has been a nice fit for me in small.
although it was a few seasons ago I bought a rapha aero jersey and sized up to medium, got some of that length while still have a decently tight fit.
castelli climbers and areo race jerseysin large . im 193 72kg and they fit me good.
I’m the same height as you, wish I was the same weight!
This focuses heavily on the leg but at 6’4” my issue has always been the bib pulling down on my shoulders/neck, even with size large. I gave up. It would be nice to have adjustable straps. I just wear shorts and don’t bother anymore.
I'm no spider myself, but I've tried shorts without bibs RH+ and have found them comfy.
I wish I could use rapha, but all their S size bibs have the flappiest leg gripper in the world on me 🕷
i really enjoythe Endura pro sl + 4 CM
Fellow lank here- super helpful review.
193 cm 72 kg. Any sportful shorts in large and castelli jerseys in large fit me well. Castelli climbers and areo race jerseys work well for me.
Fellow twig here , I also have to get longer bibs in size small
Great idea to raise this topic! I am 193 cm and 72 kg. So the Endura is probably best. BUT how about the quality of the shammy’s? That is very important as well!
I have no issues with the shammy, then again, never had any issues with shammy on bibshorts I’m this level. Only time I had problem was on cheap custom “club kit” back in the day.
I should however mentioned that you can choose the shammy width on the endura bib.
Ah the video I have always wanted !
I was almost sure that title of the video is a pun for Rapha Powerweave Bib Short. Especially for a weight weenie, considering their low weight.
Hey, try prism.bike. Has super long legs and can even ask for an extension. super comfy bibs. I'm 183 and run a small knicks too.
Thanks, had a look atthe site but no mention of an extension options for a single bib order 🤔
Great explanation 🇲🇽 ✌️
Tldr:
Try the le col pro bibs, it's like they are built specifically for lanky people.
Best thumbnail ever?
I am far off from belonging to the spider people but the thumbnail is 👍 and I always like your videos!
Thanks for the effort you put into every one 😎
orci77 🙏
Just the advice i was looking for! 197cm for 74 kg, i guess i’ll trie the M size Endura if it Ships to EU ... thanks!
If only you could do a video for the rest of the clothes in my wardrobe.
199cm and skinny upper body, everything is a nightmare 😭
あなたの立派な静脈血管がアスリートの証ですね。素晴らしい。ビブの特集はユニークですね。Tour de Franceで人気のないところで走りながら何かぷっぷーしてますが、丈の長さも影響しますね。
Can you do one for short fat people now?
finally a video for me i'm 180 and 59 kg and no shorts fit me well
The Athletic socks? I love them
Interesting topic!
@@adrienlimsowtin6662 I use the wide pad since I also have wider sit bones and use a fizik Aliante Large -> perfect fit
damn I usually have the problem that my legs are to thick for most shorts, they are ok but its a bit harder to put on.
We all have our issues 😝
I'm 188cm in a m, and I love the black bibs ultimate short inseam myself.
Can you compare the ultimate to the regular chamois? I'm thinking about getting some. I like the regular fine but I'm sure it could be better.
@@peterbroberg3081 I haven't tried the regulars, but I would recommend a try given my experience with the ultimates plus the price.
Craft (Sweden) is actually good for tall and thin, even though not as skinny and lanky as Tobias.
Well, we are the same height at least!
Great video, thanks for the advice. I also mountain bike and prefer not to wear road bib shorts. Most mountain shorts way too baggy. Any advice for slim fit mountain bike shorts, even without pad inserts. Thanks
Sorry, mtb is not on my radar
173cm/60kg here, using La Passione bib size XS , not crazy long-to-the-knee but acceptable length, so I'm guessing a size S would be slight longer
Strength training?... I heard that’s something you do off the bike... madness 😉
Hincapie Essential bibs have a 25,4cm inseam. I am 188cm and wear a med.
So a small would be 23,5 max then... not ideal ;)
I was wondering what RidesOfJapan was doing. Bibbing it up it turns out. :)
Mark Bainbridge excellent cheers for the tip 🙏
Mark Bainbridge ordered! 🙌
@@ridesofjapan Whoo hoo - I hope you like them as much as I do :-)
Mark Bainbridge quite the impulse buy there hehe... but when they actually specify the Inseam for once, they should be rewarded! (Also that sale was too good to pass up with it being VAT free to Japan as well)
Thanks again!
Rapha actually do bibs shorts with regular or longer legs
Correct, as mentioned in the video 6:44 😉
You must try Gobik Revolution 2.0 ❤
What are the # of chain links (KMC11} do you use for the Shimano 11-40 & 11-46 cassettes?
I have similar OPEN UP (size & components). I have two sets of wheels, ENVE SES 3.4 AR rims w/ Chris King hubs, WTB Exposure 32mm tires and ENVE G27 rims w/Chris King hubs and WTB Venture 47 (not that it matters...)
Also, have two chainrings 42 & 44, will use the one that works best with both wheel sets
113links + quicklink. That is for a 42t chainring and max 42t cassette with a XT m8050 GS rear mech.
I have the same for my 700c wheelset and all good, but trying to figure out the # of links needed for my 650b wheelset w/42 x 11-46 cassette.
Can not just swap and go, so trying to figure out if I can find a happy medium.
Do you swap chains, when swapping out wheels? Do you have to adjust “b” screw, or add links?
All in all, I really appreciate your advise and videos 👍
Shawn Gannon just size you chain for the biggest cassette, you can use a longer chain on a smaller cassette no problem, but a chain that is too short is too short :)
So there is no “in between”.
size for the big cassette 👍
Mavic Allroad bib shorts? No personal experience, but they are advertised to have longer leg length and pockets.
Great video. I am a very similar size. I have had my eye on the Endura long. I have the old version just in normal length. Can I ask what size you settled on? According to sizing I am between xs and s. I have xs of old version and it feels a bit compressed/ tight. Thanks
Size small
Cheers!
Whats the opposite of spider people? I have short legs and arms.
Lady bug people? Short and thick 😂
Can you do likewise for bib tights please
Impossible to find tights that fit nice in my experiance, so I only use Thermal bibs with leg warmers.
