  • In the summer of 2023 we moved from a concrete suburb in The Netherlands to a dilapidated farmhouse in a tiny village in the northwest of Italy.
This week we're greeted by a surprise, start painting all the iron doors on the property, and enjoy the last beautiful and warm days of autumn.
Thank you for joining us on our renovation adventure.

About the 'cellar' rooms: We probably could have given you a little bit more information. We will not be digging out the floor for several reasons:
    1) This extension is built on a concrete slab foundation.
    2) To reach the legally required ceiling height for living space in Italy (2m70), we'd have to dig out 1m45 minimum (1m25 plus c. 20cm for the new floor).
    3) We have no shortage of living space.
We're looking for ideas on how to use the spaces in their current volume. All your out of the box thoughts are much appreciated.

They were probably used for crop storage. Ask your neighbours!

Typically a cellar would have wooden bins for storage of potatoes, onions, and other root vegetables. These days there are more efficient ways to store those crops using layered straw, etc. However, the whole area would be a good spot for storing canned vegetables too, especially if you hope to have a large productive garden next year. Just a few shelves would do the trick. (Provided you know the space will not freeze in cold temps.) It may have also been used to cure meats in the traditional ways of the time. Perhaps you could explore that option, after inquiring in your local area about historic practices of preserving foods. Your channel is so inspiring and relaxing at the same time. Such quality work, both what you are doing physically and how you present and edit your videos. Keep up the good work!

@@farmerconnie8172 from what we have been told they probably were used for raising pigs at some point, even though you'd expect them to still smell a little of the pig manure - but they don't. in the cow stables next to them you can still smell the manure.

I would use the cellar space as a root cellar. An insulated door might be all you need it keep it reasonably cool in the autumn/spring and warm enough not to freeze in the summer. A place to store your own canned goods from your future garden and boxes of carrot, potato, turnips in slightly damp sand and squash/pumpkin to use over the winter and spring.

I absolutely love your videos. 😊 In both your story telling and your being, you exude a calm steady tranquility that is both relaxing and inspiring. I love watching the slow but logically steady progress as you transform this abandoned farm and breathe new life and purpose into the buildings and the land.
As someone who is also living in a space while working to transform it, I know that it is, in reality, stressful at times and often hard to see the progress you have made when so much is left to do.

The 2 cellar areas could be a source of income.
Make some large flats about 6 to 10 inches deep with wheels, or put them on pipes so they can roll in and out of the cellars eaay. Attach pull ropes or wooden long pull handles could be used.
Fill the cellars with these flats. The flats you fill with fertilized dirt. Start growing bulbs in these flats. The bulbs can be sold online or to markets near you grown there in Italy, on your special farm. This could really be a big deal in your community and in an online market. Wrapping in hay and send them out as they're ordered.
Started bulbs would be a fabulous thing to sell from your farm. Putting the low ceiling cellars to good use..you need only pull the flats in and out as you start them, and pull them as they're sold.
I can see it in my mind, I hope it all made sense here.
I put bulbs in pots in closed paper bags then in closest to keep them and pull them out when their season of bloom is. I have year round bloomers this way. Most bulbs love the darker moist dirt to grow good roots.
    Love all you've done!!
Oh about my you tube page name and pics. I'm allowing my 12 yr old grand daughter to use my youtube page so I can block users that are not her age and suspicious. I kinda watch over her on you tube but allow her to have her art, you could say.

Really admire what you two are doing. Regarding bird strikes on windows, I’ve had a lot of success - not total success, but a major reduction in numbers - with bird-shaped anti-collision stickers. The ones I have are a frosted translucent non-color, so even though I’ve got a lot of them, they just blend right into the views. *edit: Also, I wonder whether one of the cellar rooms could be used as a root cellar and/or storage for preserves.

Due to the uncomfortable ceiling height in those 2 rooms under the house, I would think long term storage would be the best use for them. Perhaps off season items, things like snow shovels and skis in the summer, and outdoor furniture and bikes etc in the winter, anything that you don't need to access on a regular basis, really. I love the paint color, every little bit you do is a wonderful check mark on the list. 💚💚💚(Robin E)

Tallahassee, Florida, U.S.A. here thinking outside the box!? Firstly I would put a thermometer on the back wall of both sections and find out what the temperature is for the seasons. Knowing the fluctuations will allow you to decide what you can do. There are some thermometers with apps for phones. Secondly, take a chair or stool with casters and now you can roll around inside without bending over. Thirdly, wine or root cellar?! Or how about a mushroom growing area? But I would start with a thermometer!

You really don't know whether there was lead in the paint previously on the doors, yes it may well be rust now but there will still be a trace. Your health is very precious, please take care. You need to be fully fit and healthy to carry out all your restorations on this beautiful building. To make it into a home. Your bulbs should look stunning, your colour palette is very Monet! ❤

Hi Rosemary! We appraciate your concern for our health and safety. ❤ Allow me to take you along in our thought process. We didn't file off any metal, just the old layer of paint. When brushing/sanding the inside of the doors and in spaces with minimal ventilation we are wearing a full face mask (there's a brief moment in this video where you can see me wear one from behind, there's grey straps that go over my black hood - and today when sanding the indise of the big doors Bertus was wearing one too - you'll see that next week 😊). These doors were all installed and painted post 1970, at which time lead paint was already illegal in Italy. There might have been the odd can of lead paint sitting on a shelf still, but it's unlikely that they had an old supply of lead paint big enough to paint around 45 square meters of door all in the same colour.

Could possibly use the low cellar rooms as a drying space for longer pieces of wood until they’re dry and ready for cutting up.

I'm about 7 months late to this discussion :) But I guess those cellar rooms would be good for storing things like potatoes or apples? Root storage?
I'm watching all your videos from the beginning to catch up. They are so delightful!

It better degrease the metal surface before paint, with solvent(white petrol-petrolio bianco or similar),its more durable.

You could use one of the cellar rooms for chickens. Fencing around and in the night they are safe from animals

J’aime beaucoup ces portes en métal, et c’est bien que vous ayez pu les restaurer; je leur trouve un charme intemporel, et la couleur adoucit l’aspect rude .❤

    Dear Isis & Bertus
Yet again a wonderful film. Previous owners had some forethought (and probably significant investment) about the robust nature of metal; tough, UV proof , secure and serviceable. Great idea to prolong their life and at the same time get an aesthetic feel for the future ‘look’ you want to achieve. Very impressed with the metalwork Bertus. On the cellars… I do not think they are right for animals. Surely one is perfect for wine? The other as others have suggested great for land tools, garden equipment or even wood. Sage Green very cool indeed... it looks great.

Thank you Andrew! The doors certainly must have been an investment back in the day. If you'd buy them new now they wouldn't be cheap.

Given the basic tools you have, that was great sheetmetal work on the bottom of the doors. I use to have a full fabrication workshop and the guys would struggle with such a small offset, they had a hydraulic press. 👏👏👏

    • @storiesfromthecascina
      @storiesfromthecascina  10 месяцев назад +1

Isis' response to your comment: Let's say this wasn't Bertus' first go at shaping something from sheet metal - maybe one day we'll share about that!
Bertus' response to your comment: The offset isn't quite consistent along the length but decent enough that you don't see from that distance.
      ;-)

The Cellar rooms will be good for storing your vegetables that you grow throughout the year and wine if you make wine racks (I am presuming it is cool throughout the year). The metal doors are a beautiful colour and suit the house very much.

We will probably use one for food storage if neccessary (we also have other spaces suited for that) and the other one will probably house two rainwater tanks in the future. :-)

The sage green looks more olive to me, but I think it works really well. Great choice.
As for the rooms: you seem to have tons of space, so don’t use them at all? It’ll come to you. Probably a good space to store wood that hasn’t fully dried yet. Long term storage.

    • @storiesfromthecascina
      @storiesfromthecascina  10 месяцев назад +3

I think you're right - they can remain as they are for now and when they are ready to be used, they'll let us know ;-)
The colour kind of changes between sage and olive depending on the light. In warm sunlight or artificial light it's more olive, in the shade and on the north side of the house it's more sage. i like how it changes with the light :-)

Apart of letting live animals like chickens or pigs there, you could store the wood for the stove, and store the lawn mower and other tools/machines that are not high.

Love the idea of a root cellar! We'll have to keep an eye on what the temperature does down there over the course of next summer, but as our vegetable garden will probably be quite close to the storage rooms anyways it would be super a super practical spot for it.
