Totally agree. As you know, I’ve been doing these small studies now for several months. I’m up to over 200 now. I’m also doing them before doing the actual painting to work out any problems. I’ve learned so much from this painting challenge that I started and I’m just going to continue until.....there is no end. Just great one hour practice every day🎨😊🎨😊🎨😊
1:41 for me that little thing that clicked and bumped me up was auctually one of your tips from a video. You said for highlights to change the chromatic tone of the color instead of adding white. So on a red object make the highlight orange or yellow. Such a little tip but it made a huge improvement in my work
Every video of yours is a goldmine of valuable advice. Thanks so much. My problem is i struggle with a daily painting/drawing routine. I always think i have to be in the mood first. The small paintings idea is just what i need. Congrats on the new course! If i can get my butt in gear, im keen to take it.
Great advice! I’m working on the smallest canvas I’ve ever worked on right now, 4”x4” and it’s really helping me stay loose so far. My hope is that the exercise will help when I go up in scale to like a 3’x3’ and still keep the loose and gestural brush strokes.
Well, I dont know how this video just popped up for me in this very day and time, when I have just finished my 3rd session of working on a big canvas, feeling demotivated, cause it doesnt go the perfect way I want it to go. This helps me a lot. Thank you very much for the video!
After watching this vid yesterday I bought small canvas boards and put away ideas of 'perfect big paintings'. Already feeling less stress. big grazie fran NM
Thanks for the reminder of using more paint. I’ve been painting small for all the wrong reasons, like don’t have room for big paintings and cheaper to frame. After listening to your reasons like simplifying shapes was the Right reason! Thank you
Hi there, I follow many RUclips channels on painting and art in general. I have to admit at first I thought you were a skateboarder kid who posted some videos. After I subscribed and watched your content carefully , I concluded that you are one of the best teachers on RUclips. Thank you for incredibly helpful videos , tips and no nonsense , to the point videos. I learn more from your 15 minute video than most long tutorials. But like you would say nothing teaches like just painting. Thank you again and looking forward to watching more. I also would like to say that I really like your paintings and painting style
Your right well said, it hones your eye, makes you subtle discerning, basically you express what and should I continue, keep going and if you can see small first, drawing on a large scale in turn becomes a simplicity also, though and obviously all dependant on your style(s) etc. Life drawing skills and fine sketch detail in general, even with a biro pen is a must to everybodies self discipline..
It's so interesting, how you made a video of where I am at myself... very validating. I have just recently discovered, I like to a put a filter on my inspiration photo to blur it out and then paint using that as my reference. I also enjoy painting small sometimes just to be able to finish something in one sitting. Great advice and great channel!
I really like your instruction style. I also like you better without the hat. Nothing creepy, just you have a nice, thick head of hair and watching the highlights change gets me in a creative mood.
Thanks for the great advice and information. I'm going to try a small painting in my backyard tomorrow! I'm a retired teacher and you did a good job explaining and illustrating your point. Okay, squinting, big shapes, dark to light. Got it. Thanks again.
That's very helpful and inspiring. I too avoid small paintings. I also don't paint with thick paint. This inspires me to tackle these things I've been avoiding. Thanks!
Thank you so much for sharing your video. I love painting but l need help and l have just found your channel so l will enjoy watching you paint and use your tips. 😊😊😊😊🐱🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧
What a great video! And I totally agree. I first had to grew into painting small but now I LOVE it. It's perfect for trying out new things, getting ideas just out of my head quickly and preparing new large paintings. A total gamechanger in my painting career so far!
I'm almost ready to start painting again! Every time I watch one of your videos I get a little bit closer... I know exactly what you're talkin about new videos, it's so weird to hear someone say things that I would be thinking when I was painting.
Great video and oh so true. I avoided small ones and then was commissioned for a small one. Big difference from large projects but after completing realized how much more I learned. I seek new and more complex challenges. Otherwise, I don’t feel I am progressing but I see the results of stretching myself. Thanks again.
I love your work Chris! Thanks very much. I am a beginner oil painter doing a Diploma of Art this year & what you say echoes my tutors. Really appreciate how you teach. Thankyou, Leanne
I just discovered your channel & this video was super helpful. After taking a long break from oil painting due to health issues, I found coming back to it wasn't so easy. It's not like riding a bike - not for me anyway.:) I think using these tips will help me get back to it a lot easier. So thank you. Btw, I love how you paint your pathways. They're not super detailed yet they look so real. Hard to explain but I like your style a lot.
Great idea to paint small since I don’t have room for large paintings and also don’t have a lot of room for painting. I did a small beach painting for a friend years ago and did enjoy the small work.
Wow! Thanks, this is the most helpful information for painting I’ve learned. Everything you said makes perfect sense. Now I need to put it into practice. 🌻
I tend to make small studies on an 8x8 canvas or watercolor paper and then move to the bigger canvas later. It helps in figuring out color, composition and shape.
Thanks! Helpful. Just been through a slump during lockdown but on a roll again! I work in acrylics but composition and process fit any medium. Subscribed.
these are new ideas to me, I always am trying to paint on the biggest canvas I can find/afford/justify so I am excited to flip that on its head and start making smaller concepts. You brought up some great points, thanks for sharing your experiences and expertise!
Years of painting and it never occurred to me that painting small, unlike drawing, brings its advantages. I've been doing it without understanding the process. Thanks for pointing it out.
Awesome points! I started painting small to paint the figure in short poses, 5 - 20 minutes in tiny ACEO 2.5" x 3.5" paintings. As you said, it's great because it forces us to simplify and get the overall light / dark structure. My issue is trying to stay as abstract and thick with the paint when I go bigger.
I saw this video the other day and now I’m hooked on small paintings because it really got me to the next level. How to do I apply this knowledge now to big paintings? Thanks for the advice!
It would be cool to see the same paintings of the image side by side to compare. Or if you did a video of a small, medium, larger size paintings of the same image
Thank you for your acknowledgement to my comment..I can paint quite small which I find much easier than painting large as I can paint them very fast...I find that you have to plan much more in painting a large painting...as far as size & proportion of items in the work.
Hey very helpful tbh , glad you made a channel thank you, I’d say could you do one on how to make things in jars, example :roses in a cup of water , something like that. Also another , how to make a sunset reflect off of water , just some ideas
I’m a new painter. Started with acrylic... yuk! Am I a cop out to want to move onto oils before going thru my initial acrylic paint tubes. It dries ridiculously fast and I find that stupidity stressful. Great vid. Like your style. Thank you!
Thanks Chris. As always, great advise. If I can make one suggestion, if you cannot afford Photoshop, The Procrate app is a good alternative. There is iPhone version that I use to help with composition when I am pleinair painting.
Gimp is a great free alternative to photoshop, I’ve used it for a few purposes and it can pretty much do what PS does, it’s great (I also do digital art in gimp or krita)
Can you do a video on how to use lots of paint without getting mud? I used to be poor and frugal with expensive oil paint and now have a bad habit of using too little. Thanks for the helpful, unpretentious tips!
I know you said you like Windsor Newton paints from Michaels because they have great deals but I would like to know which one of the Windsor Newtons you use because there are three different classes of Windsor Newton paints at Michaels
Photoshop's a bit expensive, especially if you're only going to use it for those few specific things. There are tons of free alternatives. An unrelated question: Do you ever have issues with black? I'm painting something in black (lamp black) & white and it looks glossy in some areas and sunken in in other areas. It's just a mess. What kind of black do you use? Do you use a pure black or do you mix your own?
I'm an artist and many years ago in a painting class instructor told us never use pure black. To enrich it, give it depth, and lustre, remove flat areas, shiny areas, etc. said to add blue, dark purple, crimson red, veridean green to the black paint. I have been doing this for years, the black is rich and beautiful.. And usually I will add the color that is prominent in the painting, for wxample predominently green? I will add dark green etc. Hope this helps, just a suggestion..
All good advice. However, regarding PhotoShop, I would recommend an excellent much cheaper alternative, Clip Studio Paint. I suggest people try that before spending loads on PhotoShop.
This video came just at the right time for me. I went out for my second plein air painting the other day, and used a 12 x 24 inch panel. The painting looked decent outside from about 15 feet away, but once I got it home and had to look at it up close, it looked horrible. I've been wondering if I should have used a smaller panel. Thanks for the videos!
Good question! Its good to do them small for studies with little detail but when it comes time to do a full painting I like painting on larger canvas for portraits
Oh My God, People!!! You REEEEEAAAALLLLY NEED to try a program called ARTRAGE!!! It treats your pixels LIKE ACTUAL PAINT!!! AND IT'S AFFORDABLE!!! Please look up some tutorials on RUclips, I promise that you will be AMAZED! Really, please try it out!

So on a red object make the highlight orange or yellow. Such a little tip but it made a huge improvement in my work
Losing motivation is a real thing! Sometimes I can hear my palette calling out to me in my sleep! Lol. Nice video coach.
The Chuck Close quote helped me with the same problem: "Inspiration is for amateurs. The rest of us just show up and get to work."
I am a hobbyist who has mostly worked in soft pastel.I found your suggestions/explanation spot on regardless of the medium! Thanks!!
Every video of yours is a goldmine of valuable advice. Thanks so much.

I think you’ll find the big canvas much easier after doing it small
just love your sincere honesty, small paintings coming up!
Haha yes! Perfect sense! I get bogged down in detail and am not progressing. I’ll try this ... tomorrow! Thanks!
Everything you say makes sense to me because I find I paint similarly to you! Keep talking and teaching Chris you are awesome
I love your art it helps me when you explain it about the art

I will do trading cards. 2 1/2 inches by 3 1/2 inches. Learned a lot doing these! Watercolor or acrylics.
Thanks for the reminder of using more paint. I’ve been painting small for all the wrong reasons, like don’t have room for big paintings and cheaper to frame. After listening to your reasons like simplifying shapes was the Right reason! Thank you

Thank you for this video, I always been afraid to attempt plein air but now thanks to your tips I will more than happy to give a go.
Bought some small canvas panels on a whim recently and now I paint a lot more with less pressure. Sometimes the little ones turn out great,

I think your style of painting loose is really nice for scenery!

I have really come to love smaller paintings the longer I paint. My favorite size is 7 by 9!

Many artists use Ultramarine and Burnt umber to create a rich black, you can vary either color ratio to change the shade of the black.

You’re welcome!
Helpful, thank you!
What size panel would u suggest to start off with?
Thk u a lot. Great information!
ay boss i like the videos, we seem oddly similar except u the older version. keep up the good vids
I struggle with size... I always tend to do over sized compositions on the canvas and then I run out of space.... 🤷♀️🤦♀️
in this vid, was the canvas wet when you started, or dry?
Lmao the big failed painting in my closet

I have affinity on Mac. Unfortunately there is a big learning curve. Haha. I keep working on it.
Good stuff!!!! Do you have time limits for the small studies....I mean 'somewhat'. I err on the side of overworking. thanks much Fran NM
I paint small because I can’t afford the high prices they’re charging for paint, paint brushes and canvas.
I paint small so my pp looks bigger, relatively speaking.

Hello coach i wanna ask u a question. Do u prefer to mix the colors that you will use before u start or mixing it while painting? Thank you💕
Thank you! Great tips as always. How long before the course is ready?
Another great video, and yes, it makes sense. Question; can 'painting small' apply to portraits?
Good question! Its good to do them small for studies with little detail but when it comes time to do a full painting I like painting on larger canvas for portraits
Photoshop: If you *can't* afford it, there's always GIMP. Krita is also fantastic.
