James Garner makes this - like all his films - great fun! The harder he tries to convince people he isn't who they think he is, the more the believe who they think he is. And Tony Franciosa's flipping back and forth between Portuguese and American English had me in stitches. Thanks for sharing this excellent spy comedy.
but Melina was soooooo good
@@CaptainNavman Indeed! Always one of my favorite actresses, along with Capuchine, Sofia and Catherine Deneuve.
@@CaptainNavman And Sandra Dee was a goddess
Ahhhh!! I can finally relax and watch, thank you!! I have been super busy, nice to come home a cuddle up to a good flic!! Love it!! And much love to you!!♡
Welcome back!
Good actors being cool made films always seem just a little bit of FUN back in the good old days, I miss that.
I watched this one all the way back in the Seventies when it passed on the television... it was great to see it again, and allow me to add: being Brazilian I can say that Tony Franciosa is much better speaking Portuguese than Melina Mercouri... I always loved her, but she wasn't even trying... thanks a lot for this one!
Maybe because she is Greek and not Portugeuse. Greeks are not in the latin region. They accent heavily, just like an American trying to speak Greek 🤣
Is it possible that the Portuguese dialogueis dubbed?
@@gwenniegirl50 propably. I tink that Melina, tried poorly to speak Portugeuse (the character in the Book, is a Portugeuse.) but, in search for an answer for your question, i found out, that Garner and Mercouri went along like old friends, and played backgammon for hours (favorite Greek pastime) along with Mercouri's huspand Jules Dassin). Garner and Franciosa were encaged in fistfights (Franciosa was rude and non professional, and not pulling punches in the scenes).😂🤣
Sobe onde posso baixar esse fime, pelo menos legendado?
This was a light hearted romp. It was a lot of fun. Thank you for sharing. And unlike the movies that RUclips down loads this one you could actually hear. Thank you for sharing.
Glad you enjoyed it.
Oh my gosh! I love the background music! ❤
Bring back latin mass it so powerful
James Garner, Melina Mercouri, Sandra Deem and Tony Franciosa are great artists.
A Man Could Get Killed
The melody was used in the film A Man Could Get Killed, but with Kaempfert credited as the sole composer. Uvezian said that he was acknowledged by Kaempfert to be the composer of the song multiple times, including in a written letter.
“Strangers in the Night”.
Thank you great movie
Most welcome.
Never got to see this when it was new. Thanks for uploading!👌🏼
No problem!
Excellent fun fueled fantastic film with the Great James Garner and melina mercauri and a host of great characters actors. Sandra Dee and Tony Franciosia. And one great theme song, but a few too many add brakes. Don't miss it. Garner is Great.
I love classic movies!!! James Garner and Sandra Dee remind me when America WAS America!!!
I do t know what that means but I am a James Garner fan so I think he is great as usual
@@DavidSeifert-jc1se
Ditto. What the helll DOES that mean? Perhaps just that you were young and optimistic.
I hope you don't mean what it sounds like you might mean.
@@tonyflinn5154I'm guessing he means a simple time
remind me when America WAS America ?
The sultry & seductive Melina Mercuri always adds a touch of class to any film she's in especially "Never on Sunday" & "Topkapi." The second wife of Jules Dassin, black-listed director who went to France, then to Greece with her. As a member of the Greek Parliament, she fought to make a political difference. She died young of cancer. The always adorable & ever-delightful James Garner, an easy-going, gentle & popular actor who moved easily between comedy & drama, TV & movies without ever disparaging either medium like some fellow actors, who got their breaks on TV & never returned. Tony Franciosa, an ex-husband of Shelley Winters, had a career on the big & small screens. He first gained popularity on TV as a playboy publisher with an endless stream of girlfriends on the show, "Valentine's Day." Sandra Dee, the ex-Mrs. Bobby Darin, was the original "Gidget." She worked primarily in films.
This comedic spy caper was all the rage in the 1960s spawning a specific film genre after the release of the first James Bond film, "From Russia With Love." James Bond's escapades inspired numerous spoofs, copycat dramas, espionage thrillers & a TV show, "The Man from Uncle." Bert Kaempfert's song (which he is credited with) was popularized by Ole Blue Eyes -- Frank Sinatra.
This was a most enjoyable movie; it brought back many memories of hours in front of the boob tube & in movie houses on hot summer days watching 2 movies & a cartoon.
Melina Mercuri was a great star, and beautiful. Great laugh of a film !!!
Thanks! Currently pursuing old world gems from the decades before the erosion and erasure of common sense.
I suppose that you've heard, by now, that "Dr No" was the first one - but that doesn't matter, because your point is well made. I shall now watch this, because I always liked JG - not TF so much (and MM's best film was "the Victors": it's available on here).
PS: J ust watched the opening credits:Isabel Dean and Ann Firbank: both beautiful women and good British actresses; there are a few British pensionners in the cast as well: was that for the finance ? I'll stop now, and get on with the film !
Thanks for sharing!
You're very welcome!
You definitely know how to keep the movie in it's entirety.. alot put the suggestions at the credits and ruin it. Awesome upload 👍🏻
Thank you for that.
Movies like this remind me that I have more great ones to discover!
❤ madcap spy comedies filled with such good actors. Bravo❗👋
Strangers in the night. I always wondered where that song came from. Melina Mercouri was also a member of the Hellenic Parliament and first female Minister of Culture.
(ain't wiki great?)
Anything with James Garner in it.
Dave in southern Humboldt CA watching, thank you!
Welcome!
OMG I love this movie ❤.
Melina Mercouri steals this one. A lampooners paradise of a picture! Joy wins out!
Thank you so much for a fun afternoon movie! I love these types of movies with car chases and beautiful outdoor scenes - all in fun :)
Glad you enjoyed it.
Spy vs. spy madcap madness!😜
sweet!
Always a pleasure to re-watch poor James get caught up with Melina Mercouri, smuggling and spies.
I love the red Triumph Herald. It steals the show!
One of the best. Amazing and charming
That was very enjoyable!
Mike in Florida watching !
Me encant{o esta peli y sobre todo James Garner y la pareja con Melina, los demtambi{emtambi{e
This was before he starred in Grand Prix
A. Very. Good. Spy 🕵️♂️. Classic. Movie. 📽 nice. One. To. Watch. This. 🎬 💯💢💫💥 👍👌🎥
Whit. Pleasure. 👌😃
Sandra Dee was soo cute!
Good print
Thank you.
Question: Is there a reason why section 18:46 - 18:53 of the movie was muted? I played it back three times and every time when actor James Garner is ready to reveal his soul purpose for arriving there ,..it's again muted. Unless it's just a perfect coincidence that at that precise moment into the movie it's silenced for a few seconds. Any answers anyone? Mysterious isn't? (LOL) Thankyou.
Apparent anomaly in the print - warning in the description.
Best movie ever!
Fun!
You started it!
Fun movie!😂😂
love Melina no matter what
The movie is interesting but it’s to blurry to see it
There are other versions on RUclips. Are they better? This is FREE. But if you find a clearer print, please advise and we can have a discussion.
Thanks
She changed her clothes between takes
To much Lazard advertising for me sorry I can't watch anymore
Garner only good on tv,anything else beyond his range, terrible
There was a reply of sorts to my comment suggesting my critique was "terrible" - a critique-critiqie because the script was sprightly and "kept you guessing to the end". Apparently my Casablanca reference was also not appreciated.
The dialogue was flaccid. If the plot kept you guessing, I will wager your SATs were shy of Ivy League material. It was a meandering, pointless plot, barely a plot, a montage of scenes where Jimbo scowled sardonically, Franciosa flashed facile, and Mecouri mesmirized.
Casablanca was a masterpiece. This was a travesty. But you have a collection of scoundrels or near-scoundrels chasing a mcguffin in an exotic locale. That's the parallel.
The critique rests.
If you are going to mock people who like something you don't by assuming they have low SATs..then if you DON'T want to ever come across as a smug and pompous fool again ..I would check my SPELLING before I posted again 🤡
@@roccocupido5082 Well, apparently RUclips comments are your entire life so, naturally, you would spell-check fastidiously. Between the vagaries of a cell phone keyboard and malicious AI "corrections" a typo or two should be indulged by the non-OCD. I'm not going to sweat it and neither should other sensible posters.
I was specifically responding to your comment that the "plot kept you guessing". There was barely a plot. Hunky hero mistaken for spy, believed to possess the mcguffin. Falls for spunky hot chick. It was tired in 1936 let alone 1966. Hey, these people led expensive lives, they needed the money, I don't exactly blame them. As for your contributions --
This has been a highly unpleasant unnecessarily aspersuve exchange. I don't appreciate being called a pompous clown (guilty of a misspelling!) or being accused of a "terrible comment". I am tempted to speculate that your arrogance exceeds your intelligence, but maybe you're a cranky Nobel laureate and it isn't the case. What you most decidedly are not is a person deserving of 5 more minutes of my valuable time.
@@roccocupido5082 So this isn't really a fair fight because somebody keeps deleting my replies which do not mock any sacred demographic subgroup nor deny the legitimacy of Joe Biden nor impugn vaccines. To summarize:
(1) Any non-OCD commenter accepts the odd typo in a post given cell phone keyboards and AI sabotage. If there was a misspelling in my post, mia maxima culpa, which is not to be confused with Mia Maxima Cuppa a Roman ecdysiast who charmed Diocletian.
(2) I think your comments directed at me have been aspersive: yet they continue to stand as a monument to your crankiness. This is a minor movie with a tired plot and a somewhat above average cast. They did it for the money. What's our excuse for fighting over it gratis, almost 60 years later?
Keep this post up. Kirk out.
I wondered about these Casablanca pompous references. Then I got it : it's a case of a blank mind 😅
And thanks to the one who pointed out the origin of Stranger in the night song ❤
@@SPavlo Yes, I continuously get insulted by idiots on this site and my replies are relentlessly deleted.
I explained the reference. You can't read. This is a Kafkaesque conspiracy of dunces.
This was not Springtime for Hitler for Jimbo. He'd done Americanization 2 years before and heroically wrestled Paddy Chaefsky's script to a draw. Here he just looks bewildered for the entire movie. The script quality had plummeted vertiginously.
Franciosa has a roguish charm that is underutilized here. Sandra Dee plays light comedy with no comedy. Melina probably comes off best.
Excellent cast. Terrible script. Microwaved week-old Casablanca leftovers.
Man you smugness and pseudo-intellectual posing is really REALLY cringe man ‼️
Not a fan but watched it anyway.😂
Lazard advertising is making this movie un watchable
adblock plus. free ap/extension
This effort would be acceptable as a TV movie, but as a major theatrical release with big stars it is a misfire.
Needed 2 or 3 rewrites at least. The best part of the whole movie is the last 3 minutes, the last shot is very well composed, with the rising music.
I would note it always perplexed me why Melina Mercouri was a sex symbol, her allure always escaped me but she has allure to spare here.
It's a shame this turned out to be a waste of all the people involved, and our time. I wanted to like this but it was not to be.
This is the movie where during filming Garner for real decked Franciosa for not pulling his punches and repeatedly hitting the stuntmen
during the "fights" and generally abusing the "little people" on the set. Jimbo always stood up for the regular guys on the movie sets
when so called stars abused them. The twice wounded in combat Korean War veteran Garner was an actual tough guy as opposed to
the phony strutting puffed up types like Bruce Willis.
Tone down your smug pretentious tone please
@@roccocupido5082 I guess accusing somebody of being pretentious is easier than actually making an informed
comment disagreeing with them. I don't see anyone else agreeing with you in any case.
You know who agrees with me? Jim Garner. Read his book.
Sorry, not impressed. Love Garner but this is a pale attempt to capture a North by Northwest kinda vibe. Fails miserably
JANEP airlines flying into Portugal or you got to be kidding me. Isn't that supposed to be gelato? Obviously he ordered that from. 🤔 Some sort of factor
Those bowler-hats, what were they thinking?!
