    My mother was an art teacher and taught the pinky anchor for drawing and since much of relief carving power is like drawing, I appreciate the advice for using it with the rotary carver and the variations for height can also be applied with shading in drawing.

    • @CorneliusCreations
      @CorneliusCreations  6 лет назад +3

      Thank you! Yes, you will have to adapt to the normal rotation of the burr, which is normally designed for right-handed people. Unless you have a unit such as the Foredom that will allow you to go both directions. With practice I am sure you will be fine though!

    thanks for the tips! yeah I'm running in to the common drawback of a Dremel, too. it just doesn't have the torque when you need to hog out a lot of material, esp hardwoods. great for sanding and polishing, but bogs really bad with really coarse burrs. sometimes I resort to the flex attachment for my bench grinder

Tajmahal was made twenty years twenty thousands people's but now how long can finish like that work.cnc machine can't use no problem but other way we can take help from power tools. I think curving works 50 percent power tools and 50 percent hand made nicely can finish. If we don't have proper machine we can use modify the power tools. thank you very much.

    Help!!! I love your channel and have been subscribed for a long time. I moved from my 690 sq ft workshop to a 175 sq ft casita. I'm using a Vacmaster shop vac with an Oneida cyclone system attached to a 4" hose with a Big Gulp hood. The area for wood working needs to be completely closed off from the rest of my studio due to silks, Pearl's and a air/heat pump system that has a large intake vent in the middle of the room. I took a harbor freight work bench and put it in the closet. I want the SR Foredom, Ram Micro motor, band saw and drill press in this area. I thought I would make a small intake vent thru the closet but still in the studio and put a desk top air conditioner/swamp cooler hang in front. My question is.... Do you know anyone or how to make a sanding room/tent so I can protect everything else. The slabs and driftwood will be cut down in my garage so I can work on smaller pieces in my studio. Any ideas? Suggestions? Thank you for your time. I look forward to hearing from you. Raven

    • @CorneliusCreations
      @CorneliusCreations  4 года назад +1

      Hey Raven! Thank you for being subbed for a long time! The first thing I’d do is buy some Visqueen and make some sort of square tent structure with it. Maybe you can create a square with PVC as support for it? Just make sure you seal it good and get that ventilation in it!

    I’ve been power carving for about a year now. I’ve been using a dremel, but I’ve been considering investing in a Foredom. Is the difference in performance worth the price?

    • @CorneliusCreations
      @CorneliusCreations  5 лет назад +3

      Foredom is a lot more horsepower to "hog" through the wood and is more consistent when you run into hard wood grain. If Carving is your hobby and you do it often nothing is wrong with treating yourself to one. Well worth the money.

    How about the direction of rotation of the bur? Seems like when I do letters or a specific design if the rotation of the bur is going towards to design I get a little of "peeling up" on the design and a line of wood fibers combed up right on the line. Seems like if i want a precision line on something, I want the direction of the bur rotating away from the line or whatever I am wanting to keep. Of course it maybe that I am not using brand new sharp burs but I am using them until they are starting to burn before I throw them away.

    • @CorneliusCreations
      @CorneliusCreations  6 лет назад +1

      I’m trying to understand fully what you are saying, it is very hard unless I was there to see it. I recommend getting a piece of wood and making straight lines down it with a pencil. Practice staying right outside the lines (right next to it) and use different angles with your rotary burr until you get used to what the bit is doing and how it is reacting with the direction you are going. Make a mental note of what happens when you move right, when you move left. Let the burr do the cutting for you, don’t press too hard on it. Through this process you will eliminate error and start seeing exactly how you need to hold and direction you need to pull the burr.

    Bad Thumb Technique
    Pinky technique is good for fine work but your recommendation of pulling stump cutter to your thumb is very bad. "Let the burr do the work for you" is good advice but you should not pull into your thumb. You do not need the extra pressure and you are greatly increasing chance you will lose flesh. If you feel you must use that technique, wear a leather glove on the exposed thumb. Do not use cloth (provides almost no protection) or "no-cut" glove. it you hit it with your burr, you will damage your Foredom or other tool.
    But thanks for your video. Well programed, good detail

    • @CorneliusCreations
      @CorneliusCreations  5 лет назад

      Thank you for your comment. The Foredom DVD instructed to this technique exactly this way.

    • @Bloodgaze
      @Bloodgaze 5 лет назад +1

      @@CorneliusCreations I was mostly asking specifically what you were using with the tools you have listed. I should have been more specific but appreciate the answer. Do you find that mid level speed works well for most applications? I've been learning and like most things, there is a lot of conflicting info.

    • @CorneliusCreations
      @CorneliusCreations  5 лет назад +1

      Oh yeah, I know exactly what you mean! Here is a formula for you. A lot of stock removal (wood removal) you need to go with lower speeds. For very high detail go with higher speeds (Higher speeds will produce smoother cuts). But with that being said. A lot of this is figured out with time in the saddle. Every wood and burr will be different. I keep mine always around mid speed as a starting point. It is going to be important just to jump in it and start drawing your own conclusions on it. Hope this helps my friend!

    Cornelius creations check out my power carving at Currahee Twisted Sticks. I am self taught, mostly use knives and dremel. Wanting to a more powerful carver but not sure what to get.

    Danger.... You have some great videos I've seen. I can say, that I have not tried carving yet, as life demands have been taking my time at the moment. I must say, the video was not what i expected with 'technique' for carving. I thought you might show how to make various textures or types of cuts, etc. You show how to brace the carving bit on the shaft. I get the pinky more than the thumb, because I pursue safety & it just does not look safe. I must admit, to me, it looks like you are using your thumb for leverage, as a sort of clamp of the wood, to hold against the carving. I'd rather try to use a clamp, & not endanger my thumb. At the least, it seems cut proof gloves would be good. I feel concerned about this technique being promoted, to be honest. I'd tell people get your leverage from using a clamp, & position your work piece in a direction that facilitates good movement of the tool. I would challenge you to try this, & see if you cannot get the exact same leverage, using a small weighted clamp (such as the drememl clamp that rotates in all directions on a ball piece, with a tightening ring) to hold & leverage the work piece. If you want to brace your pinky/ thumb, you could even do it on the clamp, not the wood. Also, the idea came to me that a lump of clay, such as plastilina clay or maybe a DIY small sandbag or hand brace-jig, might also make a nice 'brace' for your hand to rest on, rather than stressing your pinky. If you carve a lot, I'd bet that could become painful.

    Hi friend, you give good ideas, but you speak a lot. Your videos will be much better if you talk a little less and show the work you do. Good luck with.

      Thank you for the honest feedback my friend. If you catch my newer videos there is more of a balance between work and talk. Thank you for your comment!
