Wow, so much to learn. I am just starting out and need to learn everything. I have my dremel 3000. I have some burrs and I bought 24 6x6 pieces of wood to practice on. Now I need to learn, learn learn. I need to find better burrs, a vice to hold my wood. I used to have a small one that was perfect. But that was 30 years ago. I love carving on wood. But I haven't done it for a long long time. I'm 70 now and I want to get back into it. Thankyou for being my teacher!
I had to stop this video right at the beginning and thank you. Most dremel videos just assume that everyone knows all the basics. I live all alone and really don’t know anyone so when I started working with my dremel I was absolutely clueless to very basic things. Thank you for explaining things so well. 🙂
Oh thaaank you. That felx shaft I thought was a whole new machine. Knowing it's just an attachment is amazing! Lol I was just having issues with the wood dust flying at my face and not being able to hold it very comfortably.
I bought a dremel in 2018... used it a couple times then put it away... never thought about using it to carve wood ...until I got a random suggestion by youtube after watching some other woodworking videos... I guess my dremel is now a woodworking tool; maybe I will make some custom trinket for the house.
For the wood dust, I have a Dewalt portable fan that I direct at my working bit and or my face. Works pretty well, I have a very rustic shop so dust collection is not really possible.
Great stuff . Looking forward to part 2 I've carved a couple of things but use my big plunge router and it's hard on the hands. I've got a "dremel" rip off that came with a bunch of bits I'll never use. It doesnt seem to carve very good I know what it is now. The bits are cheap and crappy. Time to get some new ones
Thank u brother! I think this is a great video for the real beginner wood carver, And really does explain the basics, I will be sharing this on my facebook group. Thanks again. Also can I ask where u got that ruler matt for your work bench?
I love your video. Your very personable, and communicate well. I get very bored and distracted super easy. So Kudos for me making it all the way through your video. Lol
Looking forward to the next segment with the router base. I have the router base and used it with my Dremel to make an "International Harvester Scout" sign for my Dad for Father's Day. I used one of Dremel's small V-groove Router Bits, it worked, but had some burning. The carved in detail got painted in this case, so it didn't matter as much, but wondering if a Burr bit (flame one?) would have worked better. Interested in hearing what you think and for the next video. Thanks!
Hey Ted! The bit I have found most useful with the router base is a fluted upcut bit like this one: amzn.to/31e3Yft Also, sometimes you'll get burning if you are moving too aggressively or are taking too large a bite with the bit. Cheers
Today I came across your video. So May I ask an experience user of Dremel is there one bit that would really carve into pine wood. What I’m trying to determine if this tool could be used to cope moldings. Furthermore would a buy create aerated sawdust or just miniature wood chips? Coping with coping saw hand coping saw and hard to do and some have used a spinning sanding disc to do this type of work.
If you practice a lot I imagine you could do it. As far as bits, I'd check out Kutzall's bits. You'll be able to remove material and refine with them. And they last forever! Cheers
Ya my biggest problems with the dremel is speed control and vibration. Now looking into options from foredom. More expensive but for me and my hand issues I will pay the extra money. My question is have you used the foredom micromotor 1060 with brushless hand piece or the lathe that has a flex shift option?
You and a few others have inspired me to finally get started on some "woodworking" and of course BURNING IT! My wife and I just got a place in Tombstone, AZ. She wants me to build a bed frame, end tables, coffee table, and more things.... I'm pretty excited 😁 🤠👍🍺 Rum will be my drink of choice though....ha ha ha
You know what's groovy? kutzall burrs! oh and cool that you shout out Jordy at Carving Fusion. Can you talk more about the other power carver you used, am looking into foredom but trying to see a alternative thats comparable and good quality. Thanks!
I really like Kutzall. Their burrs are the most durable I've found. And I'm really hard on burrs! LOL And I'll touch on the other carver more in upcoming videos. Cheers!
i wanted to do some basic wood carving all i wanted is a v chisel but because of lockdown its a bit harder to get hold of one. should i just get a dremel from b and q.
Greetings, I have a Dremel MultiPro. I need to cut vertically a gourd in order to make two decorative masks. I don’t wish to invest $70 to over $100 in the specialty saws. Is there a bit you can recommend? I would appreciate the help. Thanks
Would the flame burr be able to go into a pumpkin? Wondering if this will work last minute to do some heavy duty carving! I doubt Lowe’s will let me test it in their store 👺 Edit: the material is far softer than wood and I’m wondering if the spindle will spin fast enough to clear the material “stuck” in the head reducing its ability to cut.
I would recommend all Dremel users to try Kutzall burrs for carving shaping wood. They will make your machine x10 more powerful. They power cut through wood, like a knife through butter.
@@BuildDadBuild Thank you so much, I've been doing rings only with a dremel, and I can say it's alot of work to do. Pretty sure I will grab a drill soon to make things easier. Greetings from Brazil 🤟🏼
Looking into expanding the mediums I work in. I do a fair amount of work with paints and the effects you got with the flame burr is very similar to what I get from a filbert style paint brush.
I got to wondering if the bits that came with my (offbrand) rotary tool were just too cheap. On pine I didn't feel like they were doing much more than the dent I could do with a little more pressure. So my first kutzall pick to see how they do was the extreme course narrow/long cylinder. It seems limited for relief carving except maybe and some texture (scrapes could make hair or flowing water), but where it shines is at shaping a block in your hand. It feels like the power tool form of whittling.
Just got a knock off rotary tool. Thing is pretty great but it didn’t take long for me to realize that all the “carving” bits that come with it are for sure way too fine coursed. I also melted through the hose it came with 😅 first carving ever is for one of my buddies who is leaving the unit as a going away gift. Looks pretty killer for my first one.
Great explanation. I picked up some diamond bits today from Grizzly. Didn’t realize there were different grits. Learning more and more each day by watching your videos. Now I just wish I had the money to buy all the tools needed. Lol.

Primarily because if you were fat, bald, thick ass glasses and in Florida there would be an awesome chance that you are me. #2 as a guy named Eric, myself, I love the shout out to Eric Weiss, which was also Harry Houdini's name also. So, somewhere i got this grand idea to buy a dremel and step into the world of carving. Right now, I am taping pictures of cars, planes, trains, and Deaths Deathstars to wood, carving out the lines with my dremel burrs, using a wood burner(also known as a soldering tool) to darken the lines, and then adding acrylic paint with the ultimate goal of placing them on a huge wall as a mural/ tiled family tree of my family and in-laws all represented by a vehicle. Honestly, the picture in my head is far better than anything I can actually accomplish since I have little to no artistic ability(my mother swears it is because she did not let me play with scissors when I was a kid, personally I call that good parenting since if there is a way to bleed, I will find it.) Dremel began my trek into the power tool world. I know that was alot to read, but there is a question. I have bought many of those multi bit packs from Lowes and Home Depot, and now, thanks to you I will be going to the website you mention for those bits you told me about in this video. How often do you have to replace your bits? And do the bits you mention really reduce the need for the sanding barrels? Also, one of the non dremel multi packs i bought has a flat rubber disk bit, the same rubber that the sanding barrels go over, but I don't have a clue what I am supposed to use on it, cuz it doesn't have a 0lace for a screw to hold a sanding disc on it. Without a picture of it, could you gander a guess on what it is for? One last side note, I am that guy who is a member of the grammar and usage police. I do not see anything wrong with your usage or pronunciation. If something was wrong, it tells you how good this video is because I didn't care enough to take notice.
