I still have my trusty HD25 which I used for DJing over 20 years ago. Still work fine despite having had more bumps than a tug boat. The fact you can move one cup off of one ear makes them classics to any DJ (of enough years). Have now moved onto HD650s for home use.
I gave my HD25's to my friend back in the 90's. I have ears that cannot tolerate anything that presses against them for more than 30 min. So I am now addicted to AKG that basically cover the ears, and sound great. Nice video Steve, and yes Sennheiser is amazing.
I just got a pair last week. Love them. Out of the box the bass was actually a tad sloppy though they quickly tightened up with use. Highly recommended for on the go.
I was Sennheiser rep in Chicago when the hd414 was in the introduced.. competition was koss Pro4... retail was 29.95,,,but none would take them seriously, t had to force everyone at Musicraft to Listen to them...YELLOW !!! About a year later I became everyone's best friend when consumers report gave them a best buy rating, and we had to allocate them... hifi hutch, audio consultants, united audio... RIP. Audio. Audio consultants still going strong. Bill steffey
I really like your channel Steve. I’ve been binging your videos for a week now, and you have a way of being an audiophile, while not being pretentious about it. You have a genuine love for audio and it shows! As far as the HD25s go I actually took a saw to one of my two pairs to remove one of the two headbands. That made it too loose, so I used some electrical tape and a women’s plastic hairband to tighten it a bit. Finally I have a pair of HD25s I can wear for long music production and doesn’t cause me SEVERE ear pain. As far as the bass goes, it’s my favourite headphone for making music because as you said it’s FUN!
IMO, headphones that are best tried out before buying, the clamping force is no joke on these. The 'pro' nature of them also means they were originally meant to stay firmly in place and isolate for live mixing and DJ work.
For on ears, these isolate like no other headphone I've used before. If any music is playing at even moderate levels, you can't hear anything or anyone.
Hey Steve, I think you would really enjoy the AKG K712 Pro. It has an immersive soundstage, which really feels like you're in a different environment, with a very enjoyable sound signature, good separation and detail retrieval ( it has a way of cramming the details in like the HD800, but without being harsh) and an interest layering (what it decides to put in the foreground and background). It is amp picky though. It also has a rather strange quality, which (more than in other headphones) let's you FEEL not just the bass but the midrange too, so if the vocalist breaths or growls you feel it in your throat (This might just be my ears). As I said, it is amp picky, so if you end up listening try it with a few different amps.
Not the first time you've recommended these, is it? I've been recommending the Ikko OH10's to Steve for months. He has to have seen at least one of them. Really frustrating when you know he will like what you're recommending because he reviews other stuff with similar qualities and talks about how he loves it. Steve is his own person, though, and it's not like we're neighbors and can just knock on his door and say "Hey! Check this out, I think you'll love it!" So, no matter how well intentioned we are, it just ain't gonna happen. I recommend we let bygones be bygones, before we get annoying. : )
Recently got OEM replacement ear pads for my HD414s. Amazing they still manufacture the ear pads for the headphones I bought in the late 1970s. The 25s are tempting!
Before the iconic Sennheiser 414s I’d always viewed headphones as sort of industrial tools, just something you had to use to perform a task and didn’t give them much thought. But when the 414s came out with their sleek modern appearance and bright yellow pads headphones suddenly became noticed and even a bit cool. The next evolution was the Walkman when headphones shrunk and became sleeker with different coloured ear pads, they became lifestyle and pseudo fashion accessories. Now headphones have become ubiquitous thanks to Beats and the Bose noise cancelling headphones. And rather than simply half shells you stuck over your ears headphones now come in a plethora of shapes, sizes and materials . They’ve come a long way in terms of design and sound.
HD25 headphones are excellent for external noise reduction and are extremely dynamic! I have been using them for thirty years! Great headphones with an iPhone as they are easy to drive. They are used by almost all sportscasters and camera men - you can wear them all day! Steve’s review is excellent - he is 100% right!
The HD25s are designed to be used while a PA is blasting, so they have pronounced mid and low. Not the best for pleasant, relaxed listening. Well, for me, anyway.
Nice review! Needed a pair of Heaphones to replace my 27 years old HD480ii and after this video I went to investigate... bought the HD25 Light New version this week am and very pleased!!! Thanx! ;)
Love the yellow pads on the black! 👍 I think I will have to pick up a pair? Sennheiser has staying power with great warranties! I own several. Their "Momentums" are my favourite! My slightly mod HD-600s collect more dust than action tho.
Love my for 2 years. I upgraded cable and im totally in to them it got some top end so it feels more balanced. They sound even better.... But this is 100e?! Crazy good price
I love my HD25s. I have several part of headphones but I use the HD25s the most as they are comfortable and my only closed back headphones. I can through them in a ruck sack and not worry about them getting damaged. They block out so much external sound they sound great on public transport such as noisy trains. My old pair got stolen but I use the standard steel cable on my new pair as I durability is important for me. I use other better sounding more expensive open back headphones for indoor listening.
I listened to this review on my HD25s through a Dragonfly Cobalt. A bit overkill for spoken word perhaps, but my, Steve, did your voice ever sound lovely.
I have just looked this video again, and it help me to decide what headphones I actually need and want. Thanks Steve. In Europe, instead yellow it is blue colour!
The 414 was my first proper headphone that was not a relic from the weigh a ton lot that sounded terrible as well. Mine were hooked up to my Walkman pro with metal tapes lovingly recorded from my vinyl collection, a story I’m sure replicated by hundreds of thousands of us Audiophiles back then!
My HD25 is 13 y old and still works perfectly.. I’ve been DJing with all this time and I’m so used to it, the sound feels like home!:-) ingaven better headphones, but there is something about the 25!I really love, I might even get a new one just for safety and because it’s so cheap!:-)
Thanks to this episode I now have my own HD25 LE's and they are great. Massive bass compared to my IEMs (KZ ZS10 Pros) but just missing out a bit of the higher end definition I'd like when listening to Tidal through Audioquest Dragonfly red on iPhone. Love the show Steve, best regards from Down Under.
They are great! Get the YAXI ear pads. They are $40, and really good. Totally worth it. I have the Type B Yaxi pads. Comfort Yax pads are also awesome. Japanese quality!
Hi Steeve, I'm still have a Sennheiser HD 414SL 30 years old. The originals foams where yellow. I had to replace them by the only available black ones. They still working find. It's just limitted use because of the 300ohms impedance.
"Thick, Bloated, Muddy & Clampy". I am now fully versed in the language of high-end audio. I think the last 2 were supposed to be part of the original Snow White movie. But their general behaviour got them banned from the set. But then Snow White & the 9 Dwarfs didn't sound quite as good anyway. Medication now starting to work - time for bed. Thanks Steve.
I would love a suggestion or 2 for the most comfortable over the ear headphones. I find that comfort out-ways sound quality if you want to listen for more than an hour. Open or closed can is OK as long as the comfort is there. thanks
I've used my HD25's for 12 years now. Replaced cushions once. Still can't find a better set of headphones, regardless of price or design. These sounds too good.
Back in the early 70's I had a pair of Koss Pro 4AA headphones. Great base and pretty good treble (i think they were $75 at the time). Several years later I listened to a "velocity type" headphone (probably Sennheiser) and I was blown away by the open/free sound. There was probably a bit of a trade-off in base but the base seemed adequate and more detailed than the Koss.
first mod straight out of the box is to replace the cable and use a copper one :) steel cable is stronger in terms of durability but weaker in terms of how it sounds
I have loved these headphones for 20 years now. I have two pairs of them (the second one is a part donor because a complete set is cheaper than the individual parts)
My first set of 'hifi' headphones were Sennheisers back in the early 80s. I loved those things but after several years of constant use, the foam pads begin to disintegrate.
I have had at least 5 sets of foam pads. I have spent more on the pads and connecting cord than I did for the headphones. I bought my 414's by mail from Midwest Hifi in Downers Grove Illinois for $22 in 1972.
Great review ,, I have worked in the pro audio game for many years , not so much now ,,, but the question I have to ask ,Just out of curiosity , , when did you last have a full hearing check. Thats not a throw away question , but a lot of the pro audio guys especially on the live tour or dance music scene are heading towards being deaf ,, which effects every knob or slide they touch , whice in turn effects every thing every one else hears , just a thought .
Dang Steve you got a major haircut. Look good though. Hey thanks for this video and many of the others too, i love the sennheiser headphones and the Hd25s would be good for my work from home set
Once long ago, Steve said he was going to do a video on his headphone tree. He has yet to do it. As an audiophile headphone collector It would be nice to know what he felt were worth sitting on that tree. No one else can do it. I urge you to convince him to take the time and break down those valued headphones since no one these days can give that much insight on older models.
The HD-414s were the first headphones I bought, back in the '70s. The HD-25s were my second, a few years ago. The 25s sound MUCH better than the 414s, which are severely lacking in bass response. The 25s go deep, but they are not bloated -- if there are low frequencies in the source material, the 25s reproduce it, but they don't add their own. They are flat and neutral. They're also very durable, whereas the foam pads on the 414s wear out with distressing regularity.
I have Grado 325, iSine20 and Jabra75 earbuds. Thinking about getting the HD25, for personal use. Does HD25 sound better than any of the headphones that I already have?
Original yellow foam pads were on the later black plastic version of the 414. The original gray plastic phones were sold with dark gray and then blue foam pads. I've had all three colors of the earpads. I think the blue sounded best. ;-)
Glad you made this video, otherwise probably wouldn't have come across this. Thank you! I wanted to know if I can drive them with my galaxy s10 plus, given they're 70ohms. Would love to know. Cheers.
I used to have the HD414 which I bought for 10 Dutch guilders, lets say $4,- in its day. It was second hand of course and had blue foam (that later deteriorated) and it was modified to have the wire come out of the top becasue it came from a record shop. But indeed it did sounded fantastic. Besides that, I am not much of a headphone guy but I have been thinking to get one because I live in an apartment and I do not want to disturb the neighbors late at night. So when I saw this review, I thought what the heck and went on eBay (after being shocked by the prices on Amazon) and bought one on the spot whilst this video was playing on the background. I guess I have to blame Steve for my impulse buy... Anyway, I will keep the box because if I don't like it, this might be something you can sell at a profit once the limited supply dries up.
Love your channel Steve! I'm all worked up over the black and yellows, but this is one funky and confusing promotion from the Sennheiser. Ordered a pair from Amazon and they showed up all black today. On Tuesday morning when I saw your review, Sennheiser site said out of stock. I few hours later I tried again and was able to buy a pair. Not sure which pair I will get. It's supposed to be a random process but how can it be when the packaging is completely different? Was it random or first come first served. Maybe I'll get lucky, but this whole thing is fishy. Amazon unit going back tomorrow and I'll wait for Sennheiser mystery shipment. Thanks for the review.
I ordered and received the anniversary edition with the yellow cushions last week from the Music Store in Germany. They work with Amazon, at least here in Europe. Great headphones for that price and for my purposes (listening to pop and DJing).
For ear comfort, the HD424 are still comfortable after 40 years, a better HD414. By then, the headphone cords no longer broke. But for the anniversary HD424 made later, they lost the art, and they sounded bad. And every few years thankfully, Sennheiser still makes new foam flat pads, which do still dissolve.
I’ve been looking to replace my Beyerdynamic DT 1350/80 and I’ve been considering these. I love the sound w/amp but after 5yr the cables are about to fall apart.
Hi Steve, I don’t know if you’re going to see this but can you please review the Master & Dynamic MW65 headphones? I’d greatly appreciate it. May you have a nice day.
Help Needed , I got HD 25 and i love the sound but very uncomfortable i even bought YAXI comfort pads but destroy the sound.... Is there any OVER EAR headphone that sounds like HD 25 ? That Tight FAST bass is Soooooo beautiful on HD 25 and i cant find it on any other over ear.
i had 414s AND 424s. i truly wish they would reissue the 414 but with a tighter band. the bass was really good when the drivers were pressed into your ears with your fingers. maybe not as deep as some but TIGHT. the 424s weren't as smooth as the 414s so i unloaded them too. for years i didn't have good headphones and sufficed with the $8 walkman phones which were pretty good, especially for the money. Miles Davis' Siesta was a find of mine as soon as i saw it on vinyl, later i got it on cd for the car. i look it as a sort of electronic Sketches of Spain. it was just him and Marcus Miller. i found it after Tutu cam out, another fave. i may have to get the hd25 on your recommendation. i get the 414 pads to go on my grado sr60s and they fit some of the others too. not so good on the PS1000s though (i have a pair). ...hifitommy
Is right channel red wire ear cup a little bigger, by a very small bit than left ear cup. I noticed it on mine and on online images and videos it seems they come like that. Just wanted to make sure this is normal.
Bugger I just got the HD280 Pro (new model), ha ha my first Senns was the HD40 so I love the yellow pads. I even just put recently some yaxipads on my PortaPro in yellow to pay homage to my Senns :) Should I grab a pair if I just got the HD280 ?
In NZ you can’t actually “order” this Anniversary edition. You buy a standard HD 25 and receiving the Anniversary model is a pot-luck thing apparently. And the discounted price is the equivalent of USD$169, so not very appealing.
Same in Aus, discount is jack...There are, however, certain stores that have said if you're one of the first to order you will get one of the limited edition pairs. Maybe have a geezer at some Aussie stores online.
I still have my trusty HD25 which I used for DJing over 20 years ago. Still work fine despite having had more bumps than a tug boat. The fact you can move one cup off of one ear makes them classics to any DJ (of enough years). Have now moved onto HD650s for home use.
This is why they don't have profit

Watched this video using my Sennheiser HD25s. Great video Steve.
Steve, look, Sennheiser just made earpads to match your T-shirt!
And the wall unit 🤣
@@stephannordmann5346 he _almost_ disappeared
Kind of a subdued shirt for Steve.
Great video, Steve! Ordered my pair yesterday, can't wait for it to arrive. Yellow earpads look amazing!

I miss my old HD414s from the mid 70s. They were the only headphone I've owned that wasn't painful to wear.
Have you tried Grados? They're basically the same.
Recently got OEM replacement ear pads for my HD414s. Amazing they still

The HD25s are designed to be used while a PA is blasting, so they have pronounced mid and low. Not the best for pleasant, relaxed listening. Well, for me, anyway.
Jup the pronounced bass is to make beatmatching a bit easier; it's similar to the Pioneer HDJ-1000 (former Pioneer X10).
matching yellow shirt! nice touch Steve.
Superb video Steve, your enthusiasm is incredible.
Cheers! I got lucky and Sennheiser site (Digital River) shipped me the HD25 75 Anniversary Edition. Winning!

Love the yellow pads on the black! 👍

My slightly mod HD-600s collect more dust than action tho.
HD25-1 II was my first audiophile headphone. It still has a special place in my heart
I am always glad to read reviews of affordable products. I bought a pair of Audio-Techica headphones late last year so I will miss this opportunity.
listening to this on my hd-25 love them ;)

yup, had a pair of those in college way back when! A little bass-thin but very comfortable.
Bought a set, hope I get the Yellow ones! Need a set to use every day when I don't need the HD800's

Yes, I’m interested in this too, particularly if they bore some resemblance to the HD25’s sound.

That's really not impressive. I've got dollar tree like headphones from the late 70s that still work.
I've used my HD25's for 12 years now. Replaced cushions once. Still can't find a better set of headphones, regardless of price or design. These sounds too good.
HD 414x in black and yellow saw me thru college, and a few years after that. Great sound with a burger Marantz transistor amp.
I have the Amperior version that i rewired to a 2-sides 4-wire cable and it made a HUGE difference!
I had the HD414 and the Koss Pro4A. Preferred the HD414 for its light weight, but the Pro4A for its low frequency punch.
Back in the early 70's I had a pair of Koss Pro 4AA headphones. Great base and pretty good treble (i think they were $75 at the time). Several years later I listened to a "velocity type" headphone (probably Sennheiser) and I was blown away by the open/free sound. Sennheiser is the best. My brother had a set back in the 70s. Skimpy little blue ear pads but the sound was amazing
They say it's the perfect rock n roll heavy metal headphone .
Great video , I have hd 420 and 420sl great headphone in its day
The HD-414s were the first headphones I bought, back in the '70s. The HD-25s were my second, a few years ago. The 25s sound MUCH better than the 414s, which are severely lacking in bass response. Lol, I’m listening to this video with hd25 (75 years)
I have Grado 325, iSine20 and Jabra75 earbuds.
I think the blue sounded best. ;-)
I have always sworn by senhieser. Incredible products
Do the HD25 have enough sensibility to work with a Smartphone or PC if needed? My previous HD480II didn't...
I love the Sound but ... They are UNCOMFORTABLE , Just bought the YAXI comfort Pads i hope they dont change the sound a lot.
Glad you made this video, otherwise probably wouldn't have come across this. Thank you!

I'll be getting one today Purolator. soon. and still deciding which song to test them out with.
Ah nice, I had a second hand Sennheiser HD25 back when I started into home DJing...
I think mine was red.
Those Sennheiser Momentum 2 headphones have been my main headphones for the last few years. Even though it is "kind of an old-guy headphone."
They may put them on a watermelon, but can you fall asleep with them and wake up without them broken?
I looked at Sennhauser web site to purchase a pair of hd25. It is “out of stock”. Is that accurate? John
I ordered and received the anniversary edition with the yellow cushions last week from the Music Store in Germany. They work with Amazon, at least here in Europe.
Great headphones for that price and for my purposes (listening to pop and DJing).
If you're watching a Electronic/Techno DJ Set or B2B dance set, you'll easily spot them. They're synonymous with the scene.
Just ordered a pair Steve!
How is the sound leak with the hd25? I'm hoping to buy a pair to use dueing commute. Would other people be able to hear my music?
Still hv my 1994 HD414 Anniversary. Best sound to me, just overshadowed by their own PX100
I've always liked Sennheiser headphones particularly with listening to weak signals on HF radio.
Or AMEUTUR RADIO. ;)
They missed an opportunity to do a modernized HD 414. Same look but tuned a bit differently. I loved the sound of the PX 100-ii.
I had HD420, another great one!
For ear comfort, the HD424 are still comfortable after 40 years, a better HD414. By then, the headphone cords no longer
broke. But for the anniversary HD424 made later, they lost the art, and they sounded bad. And every few years thankfully, Sennheiser still makes new foam flat pads, which do still dissolve.
I’ve been looking to replace my Beyerdynamic DT 1350/80 and I’ve been considering
these.
What's the difference in sound between the new version made in romania and the old version made in Ireland?
Is right channel red wire ear cup a little bigger, by a very small bit than left ear cup. I noticed it on mine and on online images and videos it seems they come like that. Just wanted to make sure this is normal.
Bugger I just got the HD280 Pro (new model), ha ha my first Senns was the HD40 so I love the yellow pads. I even just put recently some yaxipads on my PortaPro in yellow to pay homage to my Senns :) Should I grab a pair if I just got the HD280 ?
Looked these up... multiple sites...and no one has the yellow pads...just come with the black...what's up with that...
