"Next Lifetime" is such an important song imo, because there aren't many songs or creative works that provide a healthy cognitive channel for strong feelings you shouldn't act on. This fills that role, and I think there should be more songs like it. It provides a vessel in which to let hazardous feelings drift away, like those candles in a lake.

Fun fact: Mac Miller sampled On & On for the song Self Care. It’s the part where she says “I was born underwater with three dollars and six dimes.” You can hear the word dollars throughout the first half of Self Care. The Dissect podcast also does a great job of showing how this sample ties into the album
This is one of my favorite albums ever created EVER. It is hypnotic and powerful and Badu's voice sounds like she came straight from the 30s. I know it cliche to say this about a musician but I view this women as a demigod of music, its like art at its finest form to me.
On "the other side of the game" you pointed out that the lyric "pressure on me but the seed has grown" possibly alludes to her being pregnant, in which case I'd assume that the following lyrics about the flowers blooming in the summer is her having the child, him being the sun and her the moon alluding to their newfound positions as father and mother respectively, the precious gifts are the child and their newfound family, and the question of make-believe is questioning the stability and legitimacy of what they've created together given his "complex occupation" that the family depends on, but that also hurts the family.
I saw Badu live over a year ago and it was an AMAZING show, definitely the best singing I have ever heard live. A lot of her music was the soundtrack to my childhood because my mom would always play it in the car.
Oh man, I'm super excited for this one! Also, I know you really like live music. She recorded a dope live album with a band, called "Live" after this album and before Mama's Gun. So good!
You should check out Mr. Hood by KMD. KMD was the group DOOM started in with his brother and friend back in the early 90s. They put one album out (Mr. Hood) in 1993 before the tragic passing of DOOM’s brother Subroc. They then got dropped by their label and disbanded. DOOM re-emerged years later to drop Doomsday and became the MF DOOM you know. He also dropped another KMD album in 2000 called Black Bastards (also great) that was mostly complete but never dropped back when they were still together.
The ones with high play counts are pretty heavily featured in hip hop samples so get coverage across playlists. Absolutely love the range in your reactions. Mostly my taste but when it’s not, it will be soon enough. Thanks Bob 🙏🏼
So glad I found your channel. I absolutely love how open you are to all genres. This is my favorite neo soul slightly above Jill Scott. I don't know if you've done a video for her but if you haven't, will you consider "Who is Jill Scott"
Finally got to see the Queen in Phoenix last year, and MY GAWD. She was perfect and still absolutely gorgeous. Yasiin Bey (Mos Def) opened. 20th row dead center on the floor. An amazing night I'll always cherish. 🤘
You should check out “The Velvet Rope” by Janet Jackson. Also an R&B album from 1997, but leans more into dance-pop and electronica than Baduizm, but still with some thought provoking subject matter.
Bob I’ve been loving your content for a while. I would love to see you react to Infinite Possibilities by Amel Larrieux. This album reminds me I'd love to see you get into some 70s jazz fusion. Erykah's music tends to feel so inspired by artists like Donald Byrd, Bobbi Humphrey, Herbie Hancock, etc
This is a REALLY niche recommendation but Space 1.8 by Nala Sinephro is one of my favorite albums in the last few years! Ambient! May be weird for a reaction video but if you haven’t heard of it, you will probably enjoy!
You are wearing a MF Doom shirt. I just need one like to give you a great story about him. Erika blew us away. I was listening to Ella and Josephine and Glaydis when my buddy put this album in my hand as a thank you for getting him into Soul music.
On and On is about the Five Percent Nation's (AKA "Five Percenters") Divine Mathematics, which were _tremendously_ influential to the development of hiphop in the 80s and 90s and specifically to artists like Brand Nubian, Jay Electronica, J-Live, Nas, the Wu-Tang Clan, Jay-Z, and many, many others. If you'd like to learn more about that, read the Wu-Tang Manual by the RZA.
"Tellin' me the time" is a flip of the old slang phrase, "telling me what time it is" i.e. what's going on. So, "I don't want nobody tellin me what's going on, what I should be doing, or when I need to do it."
-Bob Power is a big engineer at this time. Tribe, De La , The Roots and other hip-hop groups used him a lot. A Tribe Called Quest even included his name in the song "The Chase, Pt II"............. You should look up the people that helped produce and do instrumentals for baduizm and mama's gun, some REAL powerhouses from both hiphop and rnb (including Bob!). A lot of the Soulquarians are on Mama's gun.
Funny this is seen as a departure from JID, when both are very tied in with Dungeon Family (Outkast crew) and have a lot of similar influences. Erykah performed as part of Outkast during the Aquemini era, pregnant with Andre 3000s child at the very start of her career (1997). She did vocals for them, and has a solo verse on the track Liberation. She is on the cover of Aquemini, standing next to Andre 3000. JID is from Atlanta, same as Outkast, and he is heavily influenced by Outkast. He's pretty open about it, wears it on his sleeve. He has appeared on tracks with Big Boi and Killer Mike (also dungeon family). He did a heartwarming meet with Big Boi you can watch on RUclips. Anyway both JID and Erykah do an excellent job of blending together mostly RnB and Hip Hop (among other genres), while also keeping a very unique musical identity themselves. I can guarantee Erykah Badu is one of the main influences on JIDs singing/softer sound, though I don't think he's said it directly. For me what makes them stand out is their "soul baring". Its a concept/term from the original blues era I think, hard to describe but you know it when you hear it. Very effective song writing on lived experiences, and everything they say is so perfectly emobided through their unique and passionate vocal performance. Its hard to explain but both are rare artists that as soon as you hear them on a track, your ears perk up. But its also meaningful music that sticks with you over the years. P.S. I find it funny how many of Bobs favorite listens and artists are HEAVILY Outkast influenced. Kanye West, Kendrick Lamar, Tyler the Creator, Mac Miller, JID, and now Erykah Badu is added to the list of favs that are basically Outkast babies. They all would tell you Outkast has one of the best, most inspirational discographies in moder music. But Bob thinks Outkast "doesn't make great albums". Go figure
The story of the "The Other Side of the Game " is a thing. You have to listen to Danger from her Worldwide Underground (2003) album and Gone Baby, Gone Baby. Don't be Long from New Amerykah part 2 (2010). It's a trilogy about a woman in a complex relationship with a man that hustles on the wrong side of the law. When she did The Other Side Of The Game she was pregnant with her first born Seven Sirius and she was with his father Andre 3000. 3000 is featured in the video as her partner (he was her man at the time). But I don't think the lyrics are specifically about their situation. She's just illustrating this emotional conflict of loving someone who is taking unnecessary risks. I love Erykah Badu. I've been listening to her music since 1997 and even though she is 12 years older than I am, when I've gotten to the age range she was in when she wrote each of the songs (I mean each and every one), the lyrics take on a deeper meaning. The wisdom walks instep with the music and they endure with time.
