    If you haven't yet, you should check out some of George Van Eps' work! He was a jazz guitarist who pretty much is the reason why 7 string electric guitars exist. His music also shows that 7 strings are absolutely not just chug machines. He would tune to drop A and use that low A string to create extremely complex bass lines while playing jazz melodies.

    I can confirm IYV makes great guitars. I've ordered 4 so far and love them all. My most recent one is a trans white single cut with a maple board and ebony block inlays. Also, a Floyd. The body is specced after my LTD EC-1000s and the neck is specced after my Ibanez wizard iiis. It's nuts and I love it dearly.
    Edit: Forgot to mention it's Trans white over flame maple with matching 3x3 headstock.

    Hey Richard! Great video! I will say when I switch to play 7 string, the thing that helps me switch seamlessly between the 6 and 7 and even 8 is I think of the guitar in a low tuning and tend to play it that way with an extra string in the high E position. That's helped me play swap between the two pretty easily.

    I have experience playing 7 strings and baritones and once you get over the learning curve, 7 strings are awesome.
    I personally haven't had trouble going back and forth between 6 and 7 strings once I got over the learning curve.
    Feeling the difference in the width of the neck kinda flips the switch back and forth for me.
    Tone wise, slightly lower output pickups work better for me, because higher output pickups darken and compress the tone of already bassy instruments like 7 strings and baritones giving them a muddier sound.

  • @brettmarlar4154
    @brettmarlar4154 3 месяца назад +1

    You basically dove into two pools at the same time. Had you started with a "traditional" fretted guitar it wouldn't have been as awkward.
    I also found it easier to play if I dropped the lowest string to A. This allows "A-shape" chords to get expanded across 4 octaves. The low B tuning is more conducive for soloing, as you can extend those scales without drastically altering the finger patterns.
    I wouldn't be so quick to give up on it, though. I would recommend getting one that wasn't multi-scale just so it feels less alien. Although the string tension will be superior to the "mono-scale" at this point, you're just looking to expand on what you already know.
    The 7-string does open up new chord voicings that you can't get on a 6-string. Sure there are alternate tunings that can get you really close, but they require a lot of setup changes and cannot be implemented on the fly. In other words, you can't start off with a part that sounds like a typical guitar part, then have it veer off in this lower register without switching guitars, or stepping on a pedal (which can also introduce more issues, like timing and tracking glitches).
    At this point in my life, I've played 7-string longer than I played 6-string, but I can still play a 6-string with no perceived issues. Though I feel myself missing certain things like not being able to grab certain notes without jumping to a different register.

    Well what you do with the 7th string is many chugs 😂
    I played 7 for a while. But now learning scales and stuff it's easier for me to use a 6 string. Plus my band plays in standard e so I'm using my 6s all the time anyway. I do have a 7 string still that I use from time to time. I didn't find switching back and forth to be an issue for me personally.

    Pickups on a 7 string matter alot more because of the low b. A lot of OEM pickups that are usually great on a 6 string are terrible on a 7 string.
