What It REALLY Took To Build The MUSEROAMER (DIY EXPEDITION VEHICLE)

  • This video dives into the details of what it REALLY took to build The MUSEROAMER, our DIY expedition vehicle. From the costs and expenses, to the resources it requires, to the mindset along the way, to how we worked with brands to elevate the entire build.
    I was inspired by the EarthRoamer expedition vehicle build and decided I would try to build my own with a $30,000 budget and a 2 month timeframe. I quickly learned both goals were unrealistic, especially when I decided to take the project to the absolute highest level we could.
    Intro: :25
    Inspiration and History: 1:00
    Pulling the Trigger: 1:30
    Base Vehicle: 2:00
    Budget: 2:30
    Resources: 3:00
    Design Evolution: 4:10
    Working with Brands: 5:15
    Where We Could Have Saved:
    Change of Mindset: 7:00
    What it REALLY Cost: 7:50
    For Sale: 8:45
    Final Thoughts: 9:30
    Build Sheet Preview: 11:50
    We documented the entire build, not only on video, but on paper as well. We took everything we learned and complied all the information onto The MUSEROAMER Project Build Sheet, which is available now. The Build Sheet contains a detailed list of materials, appliances, expenses, and components with links to where we found them. It also contains renderings and drawings to scale with detailed measurements. I've also included what I would do differently next time as well as ideas on how to save you time and money. I have no doubt that this will save people hundreds of hours of searching the web and decision making and money/materials if you decide to build an expedition vehicle of your own!

    Hi Andrew, I run a military charity in the UK that helps veterans who have suffered the effects of war or who have found the transition to civilian life difficult. In 2017 we started a new project where the veterans we help plus our small team built 4 Land Rovers and prepared them to expedition standard. We then used the vehicles to undertake an overland expedition driving from the UK to Greece and back, around 7,500 miles. We are about to start building a new vehicle to add to our fleet and we wanted this one to be a camper so trying to find other such like builds I found your channel and it has given me the inspiration for what we would like to build using a Land Rover Defender 130 which we already have and has been stripped down. I believe this project would be fantastic for the veterans we help and will give them a real sense of pride and self-worth. Once you have the plans I would definitely have them as a guide to what we will build ourselves. Thanks for this inspirational, here is a link to who we are, hope you can understand my Scottish accent ruclips.net/video/nx2KUySrSN4/видео.html

      Hey man, thank you for sharing this. That sounds like such an incredible charity. I love the concept of building something from scratch and then being able to take them on an expedition and enjoy the hard work. You're right, there's nothing quite like the sense of pride after finishing a build. Please send an email to info@andrewmuseproductions.com with a little more information on the charity. I would love to help.

I’ve spent the last year in my Subaru, so I’m accustomed to living tiny! Now I’m ready to be able to sit up inside so I’m building out an upgraded home this summer (if I can move around at all haha!) Awesome man but am I missing something? You could buy a truck camper set up for off grid living with slide outs for less money. Maybe not as warm in the snowy climates but they say they are 4 season. I saw a 2021 Host Campers Cascade 10"6" for $80,000. Add your $12,000 truck and you are in a lot cheaper. Anyways, love the videos, keep them coming.

    • @AndrewMuse
      @AndrewMuse  3 года назад

      I did a truck camper for Season 1 and it was great for me and my dog, but lacked space and gear storage. This season with my girlfriend being with us we needed a lot more space and storage for all our gear and this was a way to customize it to what we needed. They can also be built cheaply and fall apart so you need to put more money into them in the end.

    What an incredible vehicle. I saw the origional Ford 550 and wondered if you considered keeping the origional boxes for storage and getting a camper to slide inside the remaining space. I love truck campers but the only downside I can see is a lack of storage, and those boxes are a possible source of storage. Your thoughts?

    • @AndrewMuse
      @AndrewMuse  3 года назад

      I hadn't even thought of that! It would be really nice for storage, but the rails came up too high for a slide in truck camper. If you built up the floor to make one fit the center of gravity would be too high.

    My bf & I are considering a project like this , it definitely seems not easy - that’s important that you got that across because it does seem like a dream but we are currently trying to off set the cost of living expenses while I finish school in Portland next year. We’re thinking more of a large van. Would you recommend used vehicles vs new ? And for raw materials wood and other things needed also places like Home Depot/Lowe’s or other places ? Thank you ❤️👍🏽🤟🏽🙏🏼

    • @AndrewMuse
      @AndrewMuse  3 года назад +1

      Hey Claudia, that's awesome you guys are considering a build of your own! To be honest I would totally recommend converting a van or a truck camper to fit your needs rather than building your own. It's a huge undertaking and I would hate to see the costs get out of hand for you especially just finishing school. I bought all my previous vehicles used and just cleaned them out and redid the interiors. I would highly recommend that option there's really no need for a new vehicle! And we did most of our shopping at Home Depot, Amazon, and a local build supply shop. I put all my expenses on my credit card and paid it off at the end of every month to get the airline miles and cash back offers.

    If you get 250k for that I'll be absolutely baffled. I know you worked hard but the return on a van, truck, or other expedition vehicle is often less than what you even spend on materials. Just something to consider. Especially since a barely used Earth Cruiser is about 200k and that's professionally built with company backing and support...
