Yes they might seem adorable, but the silent suffering they have to endure, it's too much of a trade off. If inbred humans are considered such an abomination, why are we ok with pedigree breeds? They're basically the same.
@Ace G I never said they all were inbred, or that bulldogs were pugs, but it's known that amongst pedigree breeds and purebreds there's plenty of inbreeding. All I'm against is the people choosing to perpetuate these breeds, that were selectively developed to look this way while disregarding their health. Ask any bulldog or pug owner, and they'll probably tell you that their dog has issues due to their breed. And regarding your other comments, it's not about killing them or letting them die out, it's about breeding consciously.
How long ago did you get your pug? About 15 years ago I had a friend whose family loved pugs but they looked for "old standard" pugs when adopting so their faces weren't so smooshed looking and they looked a little bigger than normal. They were all very long lived healthy dogs with few problems. As I understand it was easier to find a healthy "old standard" pug 30ish years ago, but not so much today. I'm no expert though.
I never had any issues washing the faces of my dogs (American Mini-Foxie and a Doxie). As long as you start young and are always super gentle and reaffirming about it, it feels perfectly normal to them.
My dog in my pfp love it. She was so happy when my tub faucet leaked for a few weeks because she would go hop in the tub and stick her face under the drips and then hop out, grab a towel off the shelf, and bring it to me to dry her. I actually had to take the towels away because she would go through multiple a day and I had 2 towels left by the end of the 2nd day lol.
I've heard that some breeders are basically trying to breed the pug back to its pre-smooshed face days, so that it looks almost like a beagle. I hope they manage it, these poor things deserve better than these difficulties.
They're called Retro Pugs! They're cross-breed with a breed of spaniel to give them a longer snout. I happened to meet one in a pet store once a few years ago, and she was so adorable. All the pug coloring, the sweet little face, a straight tail, slightly longer legs, and she looked so healthy and happy with no snuffling and struggling to breathe properly. Stood her little paws on my knee and gave my hand kisses. Definitely look them up, they're so cute and a great cause to support bringing back healthier dog breeds!
good to hear! i felt so bad at the start of vid you can see the pug is kinda having a hard breathing. glad to know about them trying to bring back the healthier pugs!
The sad reality is that as long as there are irresponsible and careless people who specifically want to own these malformed versions of pugs out there, there will always be tons of breeders willing to make them. If people actually cared enough, breeders would still be focusing around breeding them to look like the way they do right now, and the whole Retro-Pug breeding could have helped push the current pugs into extinction.
@@ndt7379 you do realize that retro-pugs are just much healthier versions of normal pugs right? Pugs suffer because of them being bred to have the smushed faces. Pug breeeding honestly should be banned because all it does it make these animals that have lifelong breathing issues. awwe he reminds me of my grandma's pug princess... she's gone now but was well taken care of into old age...she used her last moments to climb up on my grandma's bed and lay on her lap...I'm glad to see people taking care of pugs because they deserve care even if breeders don't agree
His age is a testimony to the care he’s received. Getting a pug to a ripe happy age is hard work, because everything about the breed just… doesn’t want to exist. (We all know why.) But it’s clear his owners did a great job caring for him. **Necessary Update:** To all the replies saying "Not all pugs are bred badly", the breed is, by default, a deformed dog. There is no such thing as a "healthy bred pug" unless it has been cross-bred with a breed that counteracts the short snout (and spine and hips and legs, while you're at it.). Pure-bred pugs are deformed, and that's that. "But I know pugs who live a happy healthy life", that's great! The percentage of pugs in need of medical assistance to breathe is still unacceptably high. Just because it's not happening to *you* doesn't mean it's not happening. Also, this is NOT a jab at people who own pugs, I'm sure you love your animal to bits, you want the best for them, and pugs are known to be friendly by nature. I'm sure you love them and they love you back. This is a critique on breeding them, this is *not* a critique on owning and caring for them. I just see too many people in the comments in complete denial of the problem because they refuse to admit there's something wrong with their beloved dog's background. It's OK, you can love your dog, you can be a good owner to your dog, but don't turn a blind eye on the problem. Admitting something is wrong and loving your dog to bits is not mutually exclusive. Please, just make sure you keep yourself educated and get dogs from shelters rather than breeders. Adopt, don't shop! (This goes for any dog, actually. There are a lot of perfectly fine and lovable dogs in need of a home.)
I have two 14 year old pugs, and a 7 year old pug. One of the 14 year olds had cancer in her tail and had it removed, the other has problems with his back legs due to age. Aside from that, all three are energetic, happy, and healthy.
Side note for those that care: There is a breeding program to reverse the problems that most pugs/other pure bred dogs have with their issues with their breed in order for the breed to be more healthy in future generations.
That's good. While I do love pugs and think that they're adorable, the defects they all have make me so sad, and it's infuriating that many people continue to breed them that way. The biology major in me screams whenever I see one.
Lol my aunt's weenie dog is fine when people touch his legs or paws, but he catches a GLIMPSE of nail clippers nearby when someone is doing so, he runs for the hills

I don't know who could actually hate a pug - they're just so sweet! But I totally agree about feeling bad for them because of their many health issues.
they need to go extinct for their own sake, they have all the health issues a dog can have, constant pain because they cant breath normally, breeding them should be against the law
I honestly do think pugs are adorable but I would never put that over the animal's health and comfort. Breeding pugs or other dogs with severe health issues due to their body structure should be illegal... there's nothing wrong with adopting a pug, but breeding should be stopped until the breed goes extinct.
God my pug Charlie, I can’t find anyone to clip his nails. He’s 13 and stronger than an Ox. I have to wait until he goes in for teeth under anaesthesia. He will let me brush, bathe and clean his face and ears. Bud is a cutie 🥰
Being a pug owner, this is the stage of their lives that I get sad. Because they most likely are now on a timer for how much longer they have before things start shutting down. I was hurt deeply at the age of 7 with one of my pugs passing away so it’s always been a sad time for me. Sorry for the long rant.
I understand but old age for anyone or anything is a privilege and not a curse. I’m sure your pug/s were/are loved and happy. Life is but a series of significant memories and I’m sure they fill yours.
I genuinely feel bad for pugs. They suffer from so many ailments just because we humans wanted a cute dog. Edit: Apparently there are a lot of people who hate pugs(I know this much from replies), let me clarify I am not one of them. I like all dogs and also pugs. Further, I am not trying to hate on any pug owner and don't want to make them feel guilty in any way. I know they love and care for their dogs and that their pugs live a happy life with them. My point was just that a pug can't comprehendd that the life that they are living is much far from natural. This is true for human life and other domesticated species too. But atleast humans have some control (or atleast the illusion of it) over their own life. They are not bred specifically for small heads which are too small for their brain or for an inefficient respiratory system. Furthermore I also understand that other breeds too have deformities. But the deviation from the natural order for breeds like pug and chihuahua is just too much. And sadly the more the deviation from natural order, the more external support they require.

I absolutely hate that they were ever bred in the first place. This animals should not exist. I’ve had a pug before, she was a rescue. They are bred just to suffer. Anyone that is still breeding pugs is a shitty human being. Anyone that is still buying pugs from breeders is a shitty human being. Pugs are most likely always going to exist simply because people just want them. They do not deserve to be born just to suffer with the tidal wave of medical problems they have for 10+ years.
You can't fix their issues or they don't look at all like pugs. It is best to just never get pugs and look down on people who breed them because why do folks want to make creatures that suffer so merely for aesthetic purposes
I will never get another pug again. I used to have a pug, and she was such a beloved pet. But I feel bad that their anatomy causes them discomfort, and now I opt for dogs that have a real snout to breathe easily through, no face folds to clean, and just healthier more naturally athletic bodies. Pugs are so sweet, I just regret contributing to the market for over-bred dogs. IMO pugs are never fully "healthy".
Yeah I agree dogs like that and mini dogs that have been bread by runts until they became small come with so many health issues it's best not to contribute also it's good to rescue because breeders contribute to overpopulation of animals theres already so many without homes being put down in shelters it's unfair to make more

Pugs live 13-15 years on average. Pugs live very long contrary to popular belief. Rule of thumb: the smaller the dog, the longer they live.
Pugs live dummy long, had two growing up that ended passing at 17 and 19
old dogs are just incredibly cute.
Imagine actually having a dog that lets you wash his face
I have to fight my Maltese to let me clean her face, especially because they are so prone to tear stains. >_
My dog let me wipe his face, he's from the streets but looks like a Labrador
I never had any issues washing the faces of my dogs (American Mini-Foxie and a Doxie). As long as you start young and are always super gentle and reaffirming about it, it feels perfectly normal to them.
old man's just chill
@@MusicOtaku165 Thanks for giving this info!
The retro pugs are truly adorable as hell
good to hear! i felt so bad at the start of vid you can see the pug is kinda having a hard breathing. glad to know about them trying to bring back the healthier pugs!
10/10 pug name
awwe he reminds me of my grandma's pug princess... she's gone now but was well taken care of into old age...she used her last moments to climb up on my grandma's bed and lay on her lap...I'm glad to see people taking care of pugs because they deserve care even if breeders don't agree

I honestly do think pugs are adorable but I would never put that over the animal's health and comfort. The fact that these dogs exist is just so sad, really shows how selfish humans are
I genuinely feel bad for pugs.
And I still don’t get what’s so cute about something the looks like a botchling from Witcher.

"he's named after that good stuff, if you know what i mean." *intense silence*
what does it mean??? 😭

I've owned over 16 dogs in my life so far, but one of them of course was a pug, I named him Theodore he was the most difficult dog I had to take care because of how sensitive pugs were thankfully he was lucky enough to live up to be 14 years of age I still miss you buddy R.I.P.
That's awesome, I am sure he enjoyed his 14 special years with you!
I've only had three pets and my own death scares me far less than the possibility of losing them terrifies me
the most Wonderful Pug Spa ... a most Precious Pug Puppy ... sending massive Hugs & Blessings ... Thankyou for making my day ... Pugs & Caregivers Rule !!!
He looks like one of those handsome grandpas that broke some hearts back in his day lol. So funny how humans Nd dogs often resemble each other
For some reason that makes so much sense... Lol reminds me of Carl Fredericksen from the movie Up
I- I think Bud is the most precious thing I've ever laid eyes on...
When Bud is done he does a little turn and strut his stuff on the catwalk...yeah, on the catwalk.
He's a model, you know what I mean?!
Omg he’s a baby 🥺🥺❤️ so adorable!
I think he’s THE most adorable pug I’ve ever seen! He loved those ears rubs! I’m sure it felt great considering he gets ear infections often. Lovely boy!!
Look at the bone structure of a pugs face and then try to tell me pugs are cute. They look like demons. It’s completely beyond me how you can call their painful existence cute at all.
@@mugetsu8580 it is unfortunate that they have so many health problems, but does it make sense to use their bone structure in that argument? Lots of animals have wild skulls, I know hippos are one of them. The fact that they have health problems is sad but at least some of them live happy lives
@@NessaOfDorthonion Hippos evolved to have a bone structure like that on their own over millions of years. Pugs did not. Pugs look like this because we, as humans, bred them to look like this. It is our fault that they have all of these problems and people who fawn over them for looking like this are only fuelling the problem further
@@mugetsu8580 Yeah those people definitely aren't doing the poor pugs any favors. I more so was talking about the ones that are already out there, it would also be sad if they never found a forever home. But how do we support that without accidentally fueling this problem? The problems with them need to be addressed for sure though, by fixing the breed and at least not supporting them breeding (adopt don't shop). As for the hippos I was mostly using them as an example for crazy bone structure, I know it was the result of evolution. I've seen average people trying to make sense of animal skulls and guess what they are and its hard
He looks so dapper and sophisticated! I love him 😍
How this cute little bean evolved from wolves I will never understand.
@Luis Martinez Yes, He did. All modern dogs descended from the gray wolf, which humans began to domesticate over 100,000 years ago.
@Luis Martinez they all still came from the gray wolf. Look it up. It's called artificial evolution, because it's caused by humans and therefore not natural.
@Luis Martinez All dogs are related to wolves. You are right tho, pugs are deformed af. I don't understand how so many people find this cute.
@@Omar-rr6bu people mainly find this breed cute and adorable because of its face and stuff
@@mch2862 Legit deformed head. Don't get it
Thank you Bud you have given me back the will to live
