  • While in Landmannalauger observing a Dacia Duster that hydrolocked in the river crossing, I met some other tourists who got stuck in the Syðri-Ófæra river on F233 Álftavatnskrókur a couple days before. The same crossing where I encountered a Duster with a flat tire and bent suspension, and a Sprinter van with a flat tire due to a bent wheel.
They drove F210 and successfully made it across the Hólmsá river, and were taking F233 as a shortcut to get to F208 and Landmannalauger. As they entered the Syðri-Ófæra river they sank into the soft riverbed and got stuck. Lucky for them, they got stuck near the edge of the river where the water wasn't high enough to start entering the cabin. They were also lucky that a Nissan Patrol "Super Jeep" happened to arrive and was able to pull them out without any damage.
I can personally attest to three vehicles either getting damaged or stuck in this river, and crossing it should not be taken lightly. It is not a simple "shortcut" connecting F210 and F208, it's a serious F road and should be treated as such.

Layman refer to it as a Nissan Patrol, to the advanced overlander it is a Super Jeep

A Jimney without a snorkel and fording - high risk, anyway.

      What is a fording?

No, it's not. Jimnys are used a LOT in Iceland and river crossings. Many many vehicles get stuck in these river crossing but the Jimny is one of the most capable. Anyone in Iceland that own one can tell you this.
