    Hey, Margaret. I got the little Singer a few weeks ago. It gave me a bit of trouble initially. I took it apart and found a couple of parts that had excess plastic on them. I carefully trimmed them, filed them with an emery board, reassembled the machine and it actually works pretty well. It doesn't work on worsted, but sport and DK do fine. And yes, it wants yarn with virtually no tension, other than the weight of the yarn strand coming up from the floor. I used dark blue nail polish to mark the start needle.

    Margaret, I'm so excited!!! I had to come to tell you....
    I get a monthly infusion treatment for Lupus (5 hours in a chair with an IV) and every 6 months I fill out a survey about my treatments and I get a $25 Amazon card. I've been saving my cards and just realized I have enough to get an Addi Pro from Amazon. Happy Dance!!!!!
    I have the Micheal's machine and the little Singer that I have worn out, I use them a lot.
    Anyway, my question for you.... On your videos that I have watched (I think I've watched them all, but maybe I missed a couple), you mostly talk about the knock-off machines and what yarns work best for those. Tell me about the Addi Pro, what yarn does it like?
    Thanks for your time.

    • @margaret.olander
      @margaret.olander  4 года назад +1

      Just a tip: don't bother teaching basic crochet skills. There are already a TON of successful ones out there so yours won't rank high enough in the RUclips algorithm to get any views. Your best bet is to teach something that's NOT already out there. Do you have a twist on something basic? Then sure... go ahead but avoid "how to do a single crochet" etc. However, your pattern tutorials are much more likely to be worth the time and effort of recording and editing that goes into these things.

      Yes... as a female, I've been irritated by this all my life! I remember being offended at "Toy vacuum cleaners for girls" when I was little. My older 2 kids were born just 2 years apart: 1 boy and 1 girl so we always had toys of all kinds available for them to play with. One day, when they were preschoolers, they were pretending they were working at the North Pole and at one point my daughter was hammering on the tool bench and my son "making them coffee and snacks" over at the plastic kitchen! They are both adults (straight) and have such a healthy attitude about everyone having a life without limitations. 👍

Use a non-slip cushioned grip shelf liner. Use it all the time. When the tube touches the liner, I roll it up in the center of the knitting machine. The knitted tube is it's own weight. Thank you for the comparison and explanation of the differences between the Addi knitting machines and the toy versions. For a long time now I have wondered about the usefulness vs cost effectiveness when socks, touques (toboggins) and scarfs are the only things it seems to make and you only need so many of these items. I always wondered about that while shopping for them and wondering how much of a difference there was; which left me not buying anything. Thanks to this video I now know and can purchase the toy version first to see if I would use the machine often enough to justify the cost of the Addi.

I try to watch and repair or prevent the machine from the errors, but there are too many. Either it drops a stitch or it leaves two instead of one. I like to knit and crochet charity hats for the homeless through our church group. Well, yesterday I bought the one from Amazon that is the 40 needle kind of generic brand you suggest. I should get it Monday. Eeeee! I can't wait! I'll be watching ALL of your tutorials. I am a fairly seasoned knitter and crocheter, but have never ever messed with a machine. I am also so happy to be able to produce more hats. AND double thickness hats. It gets pretty cold here in the fall and winter in Denver Colorado. Thanks for your great channel! God bless! Stephanie Fricke

If so, then no. If someone else has already done them and I don’t have anything different to add, then I don’t do the same thing. That would be stealing content and that’s not me!

    Hey Margaret! 🙂 I found your channel a few days ago and I like it very much, You explain everything and it looks so easy. I bought the Singer knitting machine, but unfortunately, it stops moving when I put the switch in the upper position I think for plain knit. If you could help with some advice, or it doesn't work properly and I should return it. Thanks a lot :)

    • @margaret.olander
      @margaret.olander  2 года назад

      Thanks for the kind words, Bilyana! I’m sorry but I don’t have a clue about machine repair. It IS supposed to stop turning when it’s in flat panel mode. Could that be the “upper position?” It goes so far then stops, then you crank backwards. If that’s not the case, those inexpensive machines aren’t the most reliable so it would probably be a good idea to return it.

    • @bilyanapaunova4746
      @bilyanapaunova4746 2 года назад

      Yeah, that (the upper position) is plain knit. It wheels and then after 7-8 loops stops. And then counter clockwise the same, it stops. i am
      So thankful that I don't have
      To return it, cause it would lot of trouble. Thanks have a great weekend :)

    Margaret,I plan on buying the small addi machine hoping it will help me knit sock a bit faster.The question is can I hand knit the ribbing ,heel and toe box of the socks and transfer it to the machine to just do the rest of the body,or it will be too complicated?I can't find anywhere this information .Not sure that putting the stitches on and taking them off a couple of time is a good idea.Thank you.

    • @margaret.olander
      @margaret.olander  6 лет назад +1

      Remember that these machines have a fixed gauge and are meant for #3 -#4 worsted weight yarn. Using sock weight yarn will give you something akin to fishnet stockings. But if you want to do heavier socks, it's easy enough to do an afterthought heel and for the ribbing, I would bind off the machine with waste yarn and pick up my stitches with needles.

      I really don't have the time for another one right now but looking at the Rabbit, I can see that it offer nothing more than these other toy machines. I don't care for the tension attachment nor do I like the way it has that closure around the bottom as this would make it difficult to add weights and do manual ribbing.

    • @margaret.olander

      From my FAQ page: “Can you make adult socks on the 22 needle machine?” Yes, assuming the adult is average size, doesn’t mind tube socks made with #4 worsted weight yarn or #3 DK weight yarn. If you want a proper heel in your sock, it is best to know how to knit with needles. Heels CAN be done on the machine but it’s more of an advanced Addi skill set. (Do a RUclips search for “socks on Addi express” to find some demonstrations.) sheepishlysharing.com/circular-knitting-machines-useful-links-like-the-addi-express/

I bought 3 larger hooks recently for working with the super soft, plush blanket yarn and 2 of the 3 were Susan Bates. My yarn keeps slipping off of my hook because of the straight shaft of the hook. FINALLY, I seem to be doing better with them, but it took a bit to get adjusted to them.

    What is the advantage to the bent yarn needle?

    • @margaret.olander
      @margaret.olander  6 лет назад +2

      Excellent question, Anna! For use with the knitting machines, it helps more than one stitch stay on the needles with less chance of it slipping off and it also affords a more comfortable angle for your wrist. Can it be done with a straight needle? Absolutely. But you'll find it's a bit easier with the bent tip.

      They're fun little gadgets, aren't they? Sounds like you're putting it to good use!

      Oh gosh, Shelline... I don't know! I have a $20 Knitpicks ball winder that has served me well for around 7-8 years. I've never felt the need for a larger one than that so I guess I'm no help!

    The little blue button on the side is UP forward, DOWN reverse. It will help you start over if row 1 doesnt work.

      The button on the side is for circular knitting (goes in a circle) or flat panel knitting (goes in one direction then reverses to knit the subsequent rows.)

    Can I make a washcloth or scrubby on these machines? I want to make and sell some with my handcrafted soaps. I know that stockinette stitch tends to curl a lot, and I'm concerned that a washcloth will not work well if it's all curled up. Is there anything I can do to make it less curly? I don't know if other stitches can be done on these machines.

      Cotton generally doesn't do well on round knitting but it could work on flat panel just fine. I imagine adding a crochet edging could help with the curling but having never tried it on a wash cloth, I can't say for sure. I HAVE done little round puffs with it. (Make a short tube about 16 rounds or so on 22 needle machine, gather both ends and then flatten it into a circle; sew middles together.)

      That puff is a good idea. I don't know how to put crochet on an edge. Do I need to cast on or cast off the machine a certain way before I add a crochet edge to a panel? Thanks.

      Margaret Olander Thank you. I bought a small machine on Amazon. It was about $15. It has one white needle, and the rest were pink. It is pink and white like the Singer, but it's called Smart Weaver on the box, but the instructions have a picture of the Star Weaver and the name Star Weaver. It did great with the yarn it came with. My 5 year old son made an ear warmer headband. I have to try a washcloth today. I'm crossing my fingers.
