Sheet metal worker salary is not very great! Now it depends on what part of the field you go into. For me I worked in what you might call the middle ground for wages. I made higher end 5-figures.
Now I know you might think that that sounds good, but trust me once you have a family it really isn't...

In my union you make 45k to start and then make 95k after 5 years. It's not hard it's a great job and if a 55 year old man on my crew can do it anyone can. This guy just trying to con you. It a 40 hour work week job time off when you need it. Home Saturday and Sunday.

I’v got 28 years in and have cleared $100,000 plus for 24 of those years. We have a 5 year long apprenticeship program and once I turned out my total package pay is about $105.00 an hour including HC coverage for an unlimited amount of dependents and 3 pensions. I’m only 45. If I was to retire right now I’d make more on my pensions than I make working 40hrs a week now. Every year I work now is more money added to my pension amount and benefits. The average Union Building Trades Journeyman makes about $2500 a week plus benefits. We have medical, dental and vision coverage. My only complaint is that our HC changed because of Obamacare and we now have deductibles and copays that we never had before. Ya it’s a terrible option. It’s physically demanding but it also keeps you fit, strong and in good shape. Our apprenticeship teaches all aspects including fab, installation, engineering, controls, refrigeration, detailing, design, cad, drafting, advanced mathematics like trigonometry, engineering formulas, structural, rigging, etc. I’ve been an apprentice, Journeyman, Foreman, General Foreman, Superintendent, and Protect Manager, Detailer and in Design Build Sales. I could have be in the office but I hated it and love being in the field. I can do Residential, Light Commercial, BT Commercial and Refinery Work. Even during recessions I’ve managed to keep working. I just finished Facebooks new 58 level facility in SF. I can work and stay busy in any large city in the world.
I don’t know where you are coming from dude. Are you afraid of getting your hands dirty doing a little hard work?

I believe to start off you need to have a High school Diploma or a GED... An you'll take an apprentice entrance exam that'll basically test basic math arithmetic & algebra, English language arts & I believe a bit of Chemistry as well lol...
Then you have apply at the local sheet metal Union around ya area in certain times of the year when they're open to new apprentices. Then if you get chosen you'll become an apprentice & I believe you'll be an apprentice for 5 years, taking classes & working so being payed while learning ... First 4 weeks of being an apprentice you don't get paid tho. After your first 4 weeks of apprentice classes then they put you with a union sheet metal contractor company & then you start working ...

David, I'm 24 years old and looking to join a Union company. I like how its a full time-well paid position. I have no education aside from a high school diploma? What are my pro's and con's? I hear sheet metal makes the most of the trades and is mostly inside hanging duct work. If this is the case I believe I could do it but I am very reluctant to sign myself up to years of outside blisteringly hot and cold weather. I have nobody to come to to ask, so any input would be helpful. Thank you

    • @davidshoemaker2119
      @davidshoemaker2119  8 лет назад +2

It's awesome you're asking man. Hopefully I can be of some help. I might be long winded here, but dynamic.
Many people just listen to advisers rather than mentors, somebody who has been there, done that, and found a better way.
I was up to about $4200/mo at about 5 years in the business. I was working with RVs, pick up slide in campers, cargo trailers, canopies, air planes, etc., the list goes on. Basically I can fab just about anything you can do in a brake and set your mind to. I never got much into duct work however. I also wasn't part of a union, but did have an opportunity for the whole "benefits" jargon. I will always love working and creating things with my hands.
I, however, found a much better way. Most people become interested in a career because somebody recommended it, or because it looks like something they could probably do, or because the money seems good, or because its a "tough guy" job. I've working with countless people who were like this.
My friend, my advise to you, as a mentor, is this. What do YOU love to do? What is your passion? What makes you excited and drives you? These are the MOST IMPORTANT questions you can possibly ask yourself right now.
I worked with SOOOO many people in that industry who had worked it for 20 years because that's all they knew or for one or all of the reasons I listed out above. Their blood pressure was through the roof, their backs were falling apart, knees, shoulders, joints, elbows, basically all kinds of wear and tear health issues. Yeah they had health benefits, but their only health issues were mostly because of the job!
Then lets talk about the "Retirement Plans". lol this is the biggest joke of all. Most of the guys lost HALF or 80% of their retirement back in 2008. Or they were pushing themselves for another 5 years, and increasing their medical issues by staying in the job so that they could get their retirement which was going to mean less money anyway!...
Retirement plans in most cases don't even turn a yearly 10% growth. The market is only proving to be shakier and shakier the more the years drag on. If you do a little bit of well directed research and don't listen to people just learn things for yourself, the economy is due another adjustment and will kill close to 100% of most 401ks, IRAs, roth IRAs, savings accounts etc., Just like it always does.
Here's the problem. We're in the age of information, and with this age come new rules. The way our parents and grandparents did things worked great in the Industrial Age. The rules have changed. For example. I've spent the past 2-years building a business from my living room that reaches a national market. I'm 23 years old... My passion is to inspire people to wake up and build their lives around what they truly love doing, to be happy doing so. So you go and find what you your passion is and pursue it. If you don't you will wind up unhappy or switching careers again in 5, 10 , 15 or even 20 years.
Here's something one of my mentors told me a couple years ago, and it has served me well.
"More success is killed by well meaning yet ignorant people than anything I've ever seen."
      He was a multi-millionaire.
My friend I'll wrap this up, but first let me tell you this. The new rules of our generation are this, whether you choose to see and realize it now or in the future. Annual salaries are now easily monthly salaries by leveraging the internet. Trust me. So this is why I laugh when people try to sell me on the whole "Job with benefits" idea. Remember JOB just stands for Just Over Broke.
Hopefully I've been of some sort of help here. I'm a very driven person, so if you need help with direction or just have something to bonce off a second mind please feel free to email me at ToYourSuccess15@gmail.com
      Best luck to you man!

I would say, with grade 12, and some life exp of some sort, go to a local unionized roofing and sheet-metal company and drop off applications make it clear you want one job for rest of your carrer and you want it in a Unionized environment.. Many times these unionized company's will hire you directly, then pull you into the union as an agreement of being hired, so you start at union wages. If you cant find company's that are union, google your local, and look into their website and let them know you want to be a part of their family, because in essence that's what a Union is a family. Mind you they all varry as to pay, hours ect.. but one this is certain your paid a living wage from the start.
      Hope that helps

I work in Georgia , ive been here since 2003 and before that I was in arizona working for about 7 years.
It depends on the job really , thier are so many different types of work that fall under sheet metal.
Ive been in a union since I was 18 and it's alot more structured in my opinion than non union.
But you have residential jobs like houses, you have commercial jobs like highrise buildings, you have service which you work on air conditioners, you have welding ,
You have air balance which has to do with setting up air flow and making shure everything works correctly.
Me personally ive been doing at&t buildings and hospital work for the last 15 years and in 2016 I got an opportunity to be a general foreman at the Mercedes Benz stadium for the Atlanta falcons.

It's not a waste...its the hardest thing I've done In my life, and it's not for people who cant push themselves to their breaking point. Its taught me discipline, it's made me stronger physically and it's shown me that I can do things that I never imagined and thought I couldn't ever do. Its given me pride, and its shown me that there are people from all walks of life and when we work we can create things that other would only marvel at. I'm only an apprentice, and I'm fresh to it ( 2 weeks in) ....but I've spent my life jumping from dead end job to dead end job, and now I finally have a future that i know will bring me financial security and work that I am proud of. Do it! Better yourself, push yourself, and don't give up! Cause if you do you are only failing yourself and your potential to make something of your life. @@wuzzleone it's been hard, it's very tough work and it takes a physical toll on the body. I'm 33 and I wish I started when I was 19 but its never to late! It really comes down to the same mentality that I would assume people who join the military possess. It would not be hard at all to give up, it can be shitty as hell sometimes and not only the physical toll on ones body but the mental strain of bs that comes with it too. But it's like a rollercoaster, like all jobs, it has its ups and downs, but if you stay determined and really believe in yourself then the rewards will be fulfilling.its made me through my own suffering appreciate what those who have come before me have also gone through, and to be mentored by some of the best is an honor. I cant aee myself doing this forever, I have other things I'm passionate about that I want to do, like helpi g people leaa fortunate then myself; the handicap and the disabled. Once I become a journey person I'll be happy to even just get 10 years out of this trade and I'll be where I want to be financially. I'll be honest thought it's very hard work, and I'm no stranger to hard work, but the physical toll that it has taken on my body so far has been more then I anticipated. But I want that 52$ hour rate and I will get there! My brothers and sisters of the trade have had my back since day one, and that alone I can say is worth every bit of discomfort and pain along the way.

Gotta count them fringees there buddy. You count what you bring home on the check but you're going to want health insurance, and Im not sure about you but I'd like to retire so you're dedicating $ to that. Then there's vacation pay, a holiday check right around Thanksgiving and I dont know about you guys, but I work 8 hours a day. Of course I install and also do service as well as TABB. If you want to make money in the SMWIA, you need to equip yourself with the skills that people are willing to pay for..also, in my local there's also room in the commercial side for a good welder..it's not glory work, not gravy, but there's been a shortage of decent welders and especially TABB certified people forever. The more you can do, and do well, the less you'll sit.

I'm kinda at a crossroads. I've started the process of joining the military I took the asvab and scored a 76. But I just found out about an apprentice ship opportunity at a sheet metal working company.if I score high enough on their test that is very similar to the asvab they will pay for all my schooling and hire me right out of school (decent pay and benefits and apart of the union. Family friend went through this and after about 4 years he's making six figures) I'm not sure which one I want to go for. Military is something I've always wanted to do. And I know it's early to think about the apprenticeship Becuase I haven't taken their test but this is potentially a job close to home that pays well and has benifets. My dad and grandpa are really happy about the military option and I don't want to let them down but this seems like a good opportunity. I'm going to take their test next week and see if i even qualify. After my physical for the military I wouldn't ship out until the end of June early july and I know for a fact that I can back out at anytime before I leave for bootcamp if I choose the job. So I feel that is long enough to see if i get a call from the company. If i don't get a call ill go military route but if i do get a call what do you guys think is the better option? What would you choose?

So many people like this guy think their is an easier way but if he was making so much money why is he begging people to join his little solution.

A Milwaukee Wisconsin resident here, also currently weighing Ironworker, Lineman or Sheet metal worker. I'd say all 3 options are incredibly interesting and pretty lucrative. Lineman make loads of money but that apprenticeship is very difficult to get into despite high demand. My buddy is going local 8 ironwork but he has non union experience so that was an easy choice. My advice to anyone currently weighing options is that the money will be there so choose work you're going to be proud and passionate about!

    • @whoispriest
      @whoispriest 7 лет назад

Sheet-metal because they now include roofers, which opens up a lot of new laborer positions. I found LIUNA to be not friendly at all, at least my local there very clicky, you need to be friends with a member to get in. Ime sure not all LIUNA are like that, but the Kingston local definitely is and has a horrible reputation, outside the Union. On top that, the sheet-metal Union, you can apprentice for a red seal on top if that's something your interested in. Hope that helps.
