Tomb Raider was developed by Core Design and published by THQ for Game Boy Color in year 2000.

Hey man , I just wanted to say that I found your channel while looking up a review for tomb raider, Since the tomb raider trilogy just got remastered and I never played one of the older titles.
I think you do a really good job at explaining video games and putting your own spin of humor on it without seeming like you're copying other people. And while I'm still torn about if I like the Tomb Raider games on PS1, I am hoping that I can get past the very bad controls and actually beat one of them. It's been a long time since I've had a desire to be a classic game but your Tomb Raider reviews have put these games in good light. Regardless if I can manage to get past the clunkiness, I'm very glad to have found your Channel and am currently binging most of your videos. Subscribed almost instantly because your content is actually very enjoyable and informative, as I love listening to reviews about games or media that I never got to experience as a kid even though I owned a PlayStation and a Nintendo 64.
Hope you get 10,000 subscribers by the end of this year😊

DWhoa I gotta say that the graphics for that GBC Tomb Raider game looks quite nice haha. I'm sure if I played the game as a kid, I would've had some enjoyement for it but I definitely wouldn't have beaten it LOL

Wow, they just used the Prince of Persia sprites and changed a few pixels to turn the character into Lara. It's very noticeable when she jumps, climbs and ducks. By the way your criticism about the delay is a bit dumb : the delay exists in classic TR too, because TR1 was basically 2D Prince of Persia made into a 3D game. So it's normal that a 2D TR would work exactly like PoP and not a Sonic game. PoP was a masterpiece as you just needed to get used to the controls and its own tile system, but I just tried this TR and you're right, it's pretty rough lol. I commend your efforts in playing it for so long 😂Great video btw!!
This really is one of your most fun reviews, you weren't kidding :D The songs were great :D As for the game itself... I remembered I booted it up for like ten minutes and was genuinely impressed with how well they translated the series on a different console. Still it felt clunky and I didn't go back to it ever since. A shame, because it looks promising with the limitations, but the artificial difficulty just kills it
I was obsessed with this game as a kid! We had an old Mac so I couldn't play the 3D games, but I did have a Gameboy Colour.
Fun fact: You can do the swan dive in this game, but there's only one spot where you have the room to pull it off and it's super early on 😂
That's too bad the game is so rough, I've always wondered about it. Oddworld is on Game Boy, I had that one as a kid and enjoyed it. Nice Pet Shop Boys cover, by the way.
I remember some kid on the school bus basically walked me through this whole game over several days in 2000

Can’t believe it’s 24 years old. I bought and completed when it came out I was 9 or 10. I remember seeing the sequel on store shelves and thinking hell no I don’t want more of that lol. I did buy the GBA game and enjoyed it a lot more.
Crazy--I just started playing this again today and you posted this video! I remember really liking this game and especially its sequel Curse of the Sword--you just gotta get used to the controls!
8:48 Ah, as Odesa native, out of ALL monsters in series, this is the only one that's actually dangerous for me IRL (apart from russians), my mom had a story of how a wave sent a giant jellyfish into her head, plastering it across her face and leaving her with half of her face getting burned, myself I mostly got stung in the legs, we usually get only small ones, but once had jellies even bigger than in-game, speculated they're across the lake (from Turkey), but I can't be sure... anyway, a lot of people get arachnophobia triggered by games, but I always loved spiders, it's jellyfish that I HATE.
Thus game looks wicked. I think I might have it from that huge Steam sale where they had a thing for mall the Tomb Raider games. If not, I need to find this. Thanks for making this video and for playing the game!!

I remember trying this a few years back via emulation. Had a tough time with the controls and quit after about a half an hour. I much rather prefer the GBA Tomb Raider: The Prophecy game. Might we get a review on that one someday.😊

I'm working on the ultimate TR ranking list with every level ever created for every platform, so I had to play this one as well. I'm very glad that your impressions of the particular levels match mine pretty much. I expect you will review the sequel (Curse of the Sword) as well? It contains a couple of pretty huge complex levels and I wonder what you'll think of them. Looking forward to the rest of the series, keep doing such a great work!

Working on Chronicles at the moment. Don't know about the Trilogy yet.
@GFrom look forward to that chronicles review. I recently played through all the classics thanks to your vids opening that nostalgia box. Also just finished a full playthrough of the HD trilogy on ps3. Not a fan of those compared to the classics personally.

Oh my God I had this! I played the hell out of it even though it was the typical subpar game boy version of a bigger and better franchise
However that being said I think it is a better quality example of one of those game boy ports than we were used to get
I also had one on game boy advance that was pretty decent if not kind of generic
Just like the PS1 Tomb Raider games (and classic Prince of Persia), Lara requires 2 steps to do a running jump. If she doesn't have enough room she won't jump no matter what and will fall. The slopes require a similar amount of time / space, but they just have to be learned unfortunately, there's no foolproof way to jump like you can on flat ground.
Once you "get it" it's actually a pretty good control scheme on GBC and PS1; I recently replayed a bit of Tomb Raider Anniversary (360) to hear the dev commentary after playing the original Tomb Raider, and was constantly having issues judging where I should jump or getting angles right, where I didn't have those problems in the original game.
The GameBoy Player is known for having bad input delay, combine that with the fact this game has intentional delay to emulate the PS1 games and you get a mess of controls

Too bad you didn't enjoy it, I had a GameBoy Color back in the day and many great games but never played this Tomb Raider game. Edit: Der Höhepunkt des Videos war die Musikeinlage "Still L.A.R.A.", ich musste es nochmal sehen, um es zu glauben.

Heck, didn't even know this thing existed. I guess I'll hand it to them- back in the day it was an admirable attempt at envisioning what a 2D TR game might be like. A janky mess not worth playing, but interesting nonetheless.
They had Prince of Persia-style Tomb Raider games? O.o How did I miss them. 2:42 I have the same question actually, anyone know what other games in this style? Only ones I know are SNES Aladdin, and... well, various Prince of Persias. Other sidescrollers don't have you grab ledges nor have smooth animation with precision jumping (instead of Mario-style jumps that you can control in the air).
"Another World" / "Out Of This World" is another classic cinematic platformer. Haven't played it though.
@@GFrom Ditto. I played the Abe games but they have completely different feel, I like action games just y'know, SNES Aladdin controls over Genesis.

Many Gameboy games were really bad, but it's all you really had at the time. I can't be too mad at the flaws of these games tbh.

according to me this portable games are nothing but crash grab but still interesting...
To be fair, you didn't make it easy on yourself. The GameCube D-Pad really sucks for anything action oriented, it's way too small and stiff, I cannot playing any 2D Prince Of Persia-like with a bad D-Pad.
It's a control scheme that works best on keyboard arrow keys, where simultaneous key pressing is super easy. There's no such thing as a poorly registered/uncomfortable diagonal on that. D-Pads don't have that precision, and it's really dependent on the D-Pad's quality. I imagine you would've had a less frustrating time on GBC.
Yeah I'm aware. But I didn't want to buy a Game Boy Color and this was the only way for me to record from the original cartridge.
