In my in-depth review of Tomb Raider II: Golden Mask I come back to the PC add-on for Tomb Raider II. Are these "new" levels worth your time?
Tomb Raider II The Golden Mask was developed by Core Design and published by Eidos Interactive for PC in the year 1999.

Golden Mask is personally one of my favorites! Especially the setting in the Aleutian Islands, specifically Furnace of the gods. My only complaint is that I wish they used a Japanese military base in the Aleutians instead of a Soviet as historically the Japanese did take and occupy two Aleutian Islands (Attu and Kiska) during the war and not the soviets.
Other than my personal nitpick, it’s my favorite Expansion pack.
Does that mean we would have Hiro Hito posters instead of Staline ? That's rad.
I just finished it for the first time and the 4th level was confusing as hell for me. I spent over an hour looking for the 3rd secret. Next to the spot where you insert the mask to trigger the final boss is a gate which opens when you walk closer to it. There is a room with a big gap and an unreachable lever on the other side. If you insert the mask and run to the spawn location of the boss you'll find another lever which activates a bridge to the unreachable lever from before. I ran there and trapped the boss in this hidden room by pulling the lever, which removed the bridge when the boss was standing on it. Also in the very last room is a med kit that opens a door to the start of the level when you pick it up, so you can run in a big circle. I was absolutely sure I need to pull all these levers and trap the boss, then go threw the door that leads back to the beginning and walk threw the whole level again to find something that has changed. Maybe a door opened or one of the gold rivers became solid? Lol, the game absolutely fooled me and I'm still confused about the final boss, the secret room and the gate that connects start and finish. Why?
I didn't even know about the gate 😅

I can see why Fool's Gold would be frustrating because of the sheer abundance of enemies to fight, and for the base game of TR2, I felt that way about the majority of levels. However, the expansion pack for TR2 has the "expert" levels, which means that they were designed to be more difficult than the levels in the base game.
While I do think that TR2 alone overdid it with how many enemies you have to fight in most levels, I think that it actually works for Fool's Gold. This is supposed to be a hard level, so I think having a large number of enemies makes sense here.
Furnace of the Gods is a great level, as for the most part, it reminded me of the feeling of isolation from TR1. The human enemies in the level did spoil that feeling a bit though.
Nightmare in Vegas was a lot of fun too. While it didn't seem like it made much sense, I believe that this level supposedly takes place in Lara's dream, so it's not supposed to make sense. Plus, it's cool to see Lara in this environment for one level.

the secret on the 4th level, the one that is huge and even has a puzzly path to get out is among the best in the whole series, right with the dinosaurs one in TR3 expansion
I also have a distinct memory of seeing the PC boxes for the Tomb Raider games in the store and being fascinated by them. I desperately wanted to know what the extra content was that I wasn't getting on PlayStation.

The place with the white and black cubes is a reference to the music video for Jailhouse Rock. Las Vegas is known for their Elvis impersonators so it kind of makes sense they included it in this level.

Good review. Was a joy to watch! I finally got around to replaying TR2 Gold a few months ago after having not played it for 20 years or so, and it was a blast. While I also didn't care for the loads of human enemies the level designs more than made up for it. And those secrets are amazing! The base games had some cool secrets, but the expansions having their secrets often lead to huge optional areas like the clear ice cave and what not was really cool.

So funny they put a Soviet base in Alaska, forgetting Russia sell Alaska in 1867, way before the USSR ever exist.
I think I'm the only one who loves Nightmare in Vegas. It's a nice change of pace after exploring tombs.

I didn't get any of the expansions for the core games till later in my gaming life but this and lost artifact really felt fresh the first time I played it, Lost artifact especially!
Also you want a red hot take? I prefer playing TR with keyboard over a controller. It just became so natural for me growing up with the games!

Golden Mask is an amazing game Furnace of the Gods is such a beautiful level and the best one in the game.
Nightmare At Vegas was supposed to be different by the developer, with Lara having a different outfit and in a black and white environment. The 3 secrets were meant to be those of the "3 Kings" in the game: Elvis, Godzilla (T-Rex) and King Kong (Bird Monster), but the publisher said otherwise and the devs had to revert everything.
I love the Golden Mask with all of my Raider Heart :D
Hey did you hear about remasters of TR 1,2, and 3. It will include bonus levels from pc versions! You should make a video talking about them if not already planned

Anders als bei UB wo Level 3 und 4 Sinn machen und man 1 und 2 zumindest realistisch betrachtet auch noch drauf kommen könnte (Lara hat auf der Suche nach dem Scion die Katzenstatuen gesehen und nach dem Event von TR1 wollte sie sich eine gönnen)
Aber in Golden Mask wirkt das alles so MEGA random.
Aber, nach der Rückseite zumindest immer noch besser als Lost Artefact.
If you can not see the health bar on HUD, try key F3 or F4 (adjust screen area). Read manual :)
It's funny how opposite I am. Since I first played these as a kid on MS-Dos and Windows I can't stand playing them with a controller. Keyboard all the way for tank controls :)

Never had it, despite owning a PC! Never completed TR2 on the PlayStation anyway, in fact I've not completed any of the first 5 Tomb Raiders (nor Angel of Darkness..). I guess I suck at these games (and AoD is just plain broken). I did remember er...browsing...a lot of the Nude Raider content online though...
