How to Build a 40 Pound No Heat PVC Bow for Less Than $7

  • Hey fellow backyard bowyers!
    Yesterday we built the Zombie Slayer bow, a solid and quiet 43 pound bow perfect for dispatching zombies. While it's a great bow to have, sometimes time isn't always on your side. Even without painting or finishing, the Zombie Slayer takes about an hour or more to build. At around 5-15 minutes of work time, this bow is great for making quick backups or for building an armory for you and your trusted survivors.
    Unlike the Zombie Slayer, this bow requires no heat and no shaping. It makes use of fiberglass rods assembled into a simple bundle bow inside of the pipe to distribute stress away from the handle and evenly across both limbs. It's a solid performer, shooting more than its weight and at par with typical wooden selfbows (100+ draw weight = speed of 10 gpp arrow).
    Since it doesn't require a lot of "by eye" work, everything can be done separately or in assembly-line fashion and each bow comes out almost identical to every other bow. This makes this bow great for backups, as each bow will shoot identically to the last. One thing to mention is that a fully round 3/4" pipe bow at 1" wide will shoot just as accurately as a flattened and formed 1" pipe bow at 1" wide.
    Now this bow does cost more in materials than the Zombie Slayer or most other one-piece PVC pipe bows because of the fiberglass rods. It costs about 3 times as much to make as the Slayer, but you make up for it in time and tool cost. Where this bow really only needs a $3.00 saw blade, the Slayer needs a heat source, flattening jig, saw, and a knife/scraper at the very least.
    Even so, the materials of one bow come out to $6.40, and less than $10.00 even with the saw blade. There are some price and material lists below. Keep in mind that the prices here are based on when I bought them a week ago, and prices will probably go up as time goes on.
    Thanks for watching and enjoy!
    Material cost for one bow (Rounded up to the $0.10) -
    $1.50 - 5ft long, 3/4" Schedule 40 PVC Pipe
    $4.00 - Two 4ft long, 5/16" Fiberglass Rods (Driveway Markers - www.amazon.com/dp/B0091OG8VQ/?...)
    $0.50 - 7 yards of Duct Tape (www.amazon.com/dp/B00MLTB2G4/?...)
    $0.40 - 5.5 Feet of Poly Paracord (www.amazon.com/dp/B00A4JWVDQ/?...)
    Total Cost - $6.40
    Cost of the tools I used -
    $3.00 - Rod/Tile Saw Blade (www.lowes.com/pd_190139-16878-...)
    $5.00 - Factory 2nd amazon: Spyderco Tenacious (Any knife or pair of scissors will work. You could even use the tile saw if you wanted to.) (Here is the knife on www.amazon.com/dp/B008ABX8K0/?...)
    $0.00 - Reclaimed wood dowel (Any stick 1 foot long or more would work, even an arrow)
    Total Cost - $8.00
    Cost of all the materials
    $3.00 - 10ft long, 3/4" Schedule 40 PVC Pipe (Can make 2 bows)
    $4.00 - Two 4ft long, 5/16" Fiberglass Rods (Can make 1 bow)
    $4.00 - 55 Yard Roll of Duct Tape (Can make 8 bows)
    $3.00 - 50 Feet of Paracord (Can make 9 bows)
    Total Cost - $14.00
    The cost of materials for one bow plus the tile saw (which is probably the only tool you'd need to buy, though even hacksaw blades can be used instead) is $9.40, so still under $10.00. If you buy a single hacksaw blade instead, the total would be under $8.00.

      Use water and there will be no airborne particulates. not every cheap material will hold up to water, but fiberglass will, most definitely.

    First of all i would like to say thank you. Your videos are concise and you deliver them with a natural stage presence that makes them enjoyable to watch. I am an entry level archer and just finished making three different bows, two for myself and one for my ten year old son. For myself I made the 40 lb 5' and the 70lb 6', and for my son I made a 20-25lb 4' made with 1/2" PVC and two rods. Here are a couple issues/tips I ran into:
    1. I prefer to cut the nocks after the rod bundle is inserted. The PVC not only bends but also twists during this process, causing precut nocks to be out of alignment.
    2. Take your time when taping the bundle of rods. A neat job with few wrinkles will directly affect how well the bundle slides into the PVC. Chamfer the inside edge of the PVC ends to help with insertion.
    3. The carbide rod saws are online only items at Home Depot and Lowes. Harbor Freight carries them in stock, and at a much better price.
    4. I could only find Nylon 550 Paracord at Lowe's or Home Depot, and its not in rope & chain section. It's in the truck bed tie-downs and toolbox area. When using the nylon 550 subtract an additional 2-3 inches off the measurement for your string for stretch.
    5. Direct sunlight will rapidly degrade PVC, and cold temperatures will cause the PVC to become brittle increasing the likely hood of cracks... especially at the nocks. Protect your bow.

    For a survival bow this is more than enough to take any small game at reasonable distances, at 145.7 fps a 400 grain arrow is hitting at just over 18 foot pounds, or 25.559 joules, you only need as little as 6 to kill a rabbit with a head shot, this is very, very cool.

    • @Bowers101010
      @Bowers101010 10 лет назад +3

      Actually with a good broad head, even a knapped arrow head this bow would easily take down a whitetail deer. With Blunt tips it will more than adequately take any small game. I shoot a recurve bow that is 45#@28 and it is more than enough with proper shot placement to take down any wild game in the south east

    Hey Nick, I made the first bow this way and achieved 40lbs draw at 28" - I modified it using 2 x 48" x 3/8" fiberglass rods, a 3rd cut to 36" and a 4th cut to 18" and was able to get a max of 67 lbs of draw at 28" (using 550 paracord for bowstring). It sent a 150 grain field point completely through my 7/8" thick fence board (just *broke* completely through it did not *travel* completely through). Man, I'm convinced these things could easily take a 3 or 4 year old buck as well as anything you could buy from Bass Pro or Cabella's (and intend to take the 67 pounder on my next hunt). Thanks for the addiction by the way. I have a feeling I will be making these every weekend from now on LOL.

    Hi Nick, thanks for this tutorial. I have just created my second bow according to this :) There is a problem with proper pipes in Europe - it is quite hard to find Sch40 pipes... we use different standards and there are no thick wall pipes here :( But I have used 3/4" with 1/2" inside and it works pretty well - the inside diameter is then smaller then Sch40 pipe and it is hard to put there three pieces of glass fiber rods bend together with the duck tape... but still my bows work pretty well. Thanx again and maybe I will try heated pipe once to form a nice recursive bow from your tutorials :) See Ya

    Wow that has some nice fire to it. How is the wear and tear though?

    • @BackyardBowyer
      @BackyardBowyer  10 лет назад +9

      It's a pretty solid bow. The only thing I would say is to wrap or pad the arrow rest with something (even just a bit of tape, change it out when it gets worn through). It's possible to eventually wear through the pipe if you put enough arrows through it. Also, if you cut the nocks too deep, you may have an issue of nocks breaking.

    • @IanHunter78

      The bow I made has 12 inches of slightly larger pipe over the middle section. I've also put duct tape over this section, which could reduce wear on the pipe.

    Hey BackyardBowyer, how do I know if I made my string too short and will this affect the bow negatively?

    • @BackyardBowyer
      @BackyardBowyer  8 лет назад +9

      +JakexD It the bow is too short, you will be putting it under a lot more strain and it won't perform very well. The distance between the string and bow handle should be around 6-8 inches for a good balance of comfort, performance, and accuracy. Hope this helps!

    • @reynardjon15
      @reynardjon15 8 лет назад

      +Joshua Manuel If possible i would assume that fiberglass rods for a chimney brush would work as a subtitute for the drivway markers they are 5 ft lenth so you would need to cut them down to 48 inches to make the exact copy of this bow. if you dont have access to the chimney bush rods I would suggest amazon to order them or the driveway markers. chimney brush rods are much more expensive then the drivway markers so I would personnaly go with the driveway markers,

    do you think this is strong enough to bowfish with?? great video, thanks.

    • @BackyardBowyer
      @BackyardBowyer  9 лет назад +18

      Dylan Kowalski This is on the lower end for bowfishing. You could use it, but a slightly heavier bow would be a lot better. Still, it would work fine for smaller/softer fish. If you start out with a 56" length of pipe, the bow will be around 50-55 pounds and great for even bonier fish and deeper water. Hope this helps!

      On a bow like this, you can make a reel seat using a T pipe fitting that's been cut down one side.

    Does anyone know the draw length of this bow?.. Converting it to a ballista that shoots golf balls for my engineering class..

    • @BackyardBowyer
      @BackyardBowyer  8 лет назад +9

      +EnderOnFire14 The draw length is 28 inches on this bow, but it will draw up to around 32 inches as-is. If you need a longer draw, you can increase the length of the pipe. Each inch of added pipe length will give roughly 1 inch of additional draw length. Hope this helps!

      +BackyardBowyer How do you think flattening something like 10" PVC pipe, which has a thicker wall, would work for a bow? cut it in half, flatten it, cut out the shape of the bow. My school has a CNC machine, so I'm thinking about cutting out a form that I can heat bend it to in order to make a recurve. Do you think that just bolting a riser on would work?

    Why cut the rods? why not just put 4 uncut one in the pipe?

    • @BackyardBowyer
      @BackyardBowyer  7 лет назад +17

      The cut rods make a bundle bow, that way the finished bow has better performance. Using full-length rods would result in a bow that is heavier but slower and less powerful than this 40 pound bow.
