I'm a retired recreational mountaineer and have summited some worthy peaks in Alaska, the Pacific Northwest, Canada and South America. For every summit accomplishment, I've failed to make it to the top 5 times more often because of bad weather, unstable rock/snow conditions, technical difficulties beyond my skills. Peaks above 18,000 feet even with acclimatization training I turned into a helpless creature barely able to descend without assistance from my mates and that taught me a lesson. Don't push beyond your limits. So I never aspired to do world class mountains.
The oxygen supplemented fixed ropes on Everest and other mountains have become a carnival of pay to play rich supposed athletes looking for bragging rights. Sorry, I never would stand in line sucking on a tank for a summit.
My summits were modest but every one of them was a wonderful experience and an accomplishment done in alpine style which I treasure. Can't brag on them but my mates and me share the memories, some of them pretty epic adventures and that's enough for me.

The sensible thing might be if you only get to attempt Everest if you have a certificate of having summited three other 7,500 or 8,000 meter mountains already (of which there are dozens in the Himalayas). Everest would thus be reserved for mountaineers who have earned (not just paid for) their chance, and Sherpas would be able to get to work on the other less crowded mountains as well.

This would only lead to mass commercialization of other easier 8000ers. Like Cho Oyu. Not solving the issue, but making it worse. People will still want to climb Everest, because...well, it's the highest point on Earth. All this talk about putting requirements for some experience among climbers is fantasy. Nepalese government likes it the way it is, it pays well. The fact that it is deadly honestly only increases a potential customer base, as people would want to brag about how dangerous it was being carried up the mountain by 5 sherpas. If K2 was not so inaccessible in terms of just getting to the foot of it it'd be commercialized too. Precisely because it is so dangerous.

I have no idea why anyone would. But anyway, they shouldn't allow so many people on the mountain. That makes it more dangerous.
Also if the Sherpa says go back, the climber should go back with them. One Sherpa lost his fingers to frostbite, because the climber he took wouldn't turn back, because he said he had paid a lot of money, and the Sherpa didn't want to ruin the Sherpa reputation.

the movie based on the 1996 disaster was incredibly sad all the more because its factual and has happened to others since. Beck Weathers is a tough SOB to have survived. Other mountains can be as deadly of course.

Irony of his last name, as a blizzard killed so many, even expert climbers.

To heck with climbing snowy mountains. I climbed Huaya Picchu in Peru and it was amazing! Beautiful with just a hint of danger. Everything was so verdant, flowers everywhere, we saw hummingbirds and a giant centipede on the way back down. U don't see much flora or fauna on a bleak ice covered rock like Everest and u aint gonna catch hypothermia and frostbite climbing a lovely temperate mountain in Peru. Everest sounds like a punishment to me.

I don't understand why people have such an obsession with going to Mount Everest. People say because it is 'the top of the World' but the aeroplane to get to Nepal goes higher than Mount Everest so what is the point? 😕.

Some people are just obsessed with mountains. And if you were, standing on top of a mountain would give you a feeling which is hard to explain to someone who just does not care about mountains at all. Being on a relatively small mountain (like 10000 ft) is far more exciting to be than being in an airplane. Being in an airplane does not mean anything to me. To be honest, i would rather be on Mt Everest than in space. Unless i would get the chance to climp Mons Olympus. :p
