    Very impressive about the moon planting. Not many understand planting/harvesting by the moon. Truly biblical and a long lost art ! 😃🙏🏽

    Came across your channel last week and it's perfect timing as my wife and I just moved to the area. Already coming across useful information that will help us down the line. Question: The first project I'm doing is a rock wall in the front of the property. I generally see 3 colors of walls here in Hawaii: gray, brown and black. I see at the local rock place the rock looks gray but likely the blue rock I've read about. Will this patina over time and become the brown or black I generally see? Thanks again, already saving us time and money....... Aloha

      @HomesteadinHawaii  2 года назад

      Pretty sure the rock is the color its gonna be. Older flows have browner, grey rock. New flows its black. What happens over time is the moss growing over eventually

    When you build these “raised beds” on top of cinder and lava rock, how do you prevent heavy rains from washing away a lot of the compost? Plant cover crops? Line the bed with comfrey?

    • @HomesteadinHawaii
      @HomesteadinHawaii  4 года назад +3

      You can do all those things you mentioned. Mulch sticks around longer than compost. I worry about improving the soil by adding as much as I can
      I dont worry too much about it washing away. The roots will find it.

    how can I get lava rock to add minerals to the soil here in central FL? Also does ocean water diluted 1 :20 cups water provide good nutrients to the soil? I heard here on youtube that the ocean has almost every element there is in trace amounts.

    • @HomesteadinHawaii
      @HomesteadinHawaii  Год назад

      Ocean water is a great resource. Check out my video on fermented seawater to make it even better. I don’t know how you can get lava rock, but biochar, compost manure and some mulch should help any soil

    What was that stuff called you added to the mulch to break it down? Culmphry?

    • @HomesteadinHawaii
      @HomesteadinHawaii  4 года назад

      Comfrey. It's a fast growing plant that produces alot of material, breaksdown quick and is full of nutrients

      Get a remote job and go to Nicaragua, Mexico or Indonesia. If I could do it over thats what I would do.
      We just had lava destroy a few spots on the big island and this is the last semi affordable area!

      @@caliearthlamps glad I can help. I like to go 50/50 manure/soil. Best if manure is left to compost a bit
      Too hot and too much will burn. On fruit trees though I just throw it on and my chickens spread it out for me.
