    I really love reviews where they have conflicting opinions on interesting movies.
    You rarely see ppl challenge each other on these types of things and it’s always fascinating to see 3 smart ppl speak around their points in intelligent ways.

      I've been faithfully watching/listening to Christy, Matt, and Alonso since 2010 when they were on TYT's What The Flick channel.
      I can't believe it's been a decade.

    About the subtitles, I think they only started subtitling the sign language once Riz Ahmed had learned it, which I thought was really great in keeping the motif of experiencing the world through Ruben's subjective perspective.

    I agree it's an amazing film that shows us the emotional journey of the character rather than just telling us about it.

    9:43 They start subtitling the ASL when Riz has learned it. Sticking to his perspective and forcing you to experience with him.
    And to Mr bottom-bearded guy, I agree with your beef about how these monumental steps would be better understood, but I think the movie was trying to communicate his panic and desperation to regain his hearing - that he would neither listen to clarifying disclaimers nor invite the possibility of them. Those scenes frustrated me too, but it was in service of message about his character, I thought.

    Finally got around to watching it, and it’s my best film of 2020 so far. Just an astounding work of cinema in which the tools and techniques of the art are absolutely in service of the story’s *humanity*, rather than merely being in service of the story (which, frankly, would have been more by itself than most movies accomplish today). Sound of Metal does what art should; it helps all of us, hearing or otherwise, understand ourselves in relation to our world and to what is beyond ourselves.

    Cool to hear that the ending is so terrific. Endings are on my mind right now since rewatching A Hidden Life last night and deciding its ending is among the finest I’ve ever seen.

    Oh my god what a wonderful surprise, I missed What the Flick so much and was bummed when it abruptly ended. Glad to see you guys back together, I had no idea. Definitely subscribing! Loved this film, my favorite of the year so far. Depending on how 'Nomadland', 'Minari' and 'The Reason I Jump' turn out, but this film set the bar pretty fucking high.

    Great movie, got to see it in a theater in Korea on August 2020 through Jeonju Film Festival extended screenings. Sound design alone was definitely worth the price of admission, and I also do hope it gets a Best Sound Oscar nom.

    I loved this. By far my favourite movie I've seen this year. It would be well deserved to see Riz Ahmed and Paul Raci get a Best Actor and Best Supporting Actor nomination respectively. The final scene together is both heartbreaking and touching. And couldn't agree more with Christy, one of the best endings of the year!

    I really liked the movie but there's one aspect of the story I've found confusing and irrealistic:
    shouldn't the doctors have explained to him BEFORE the operation that the sound coming from those implants would have been metallic and high pitched?

    • @richfictionfighter
      @richfictionfighter 3 года назад

      Here’s my theory: The first doctor Ruben sees in the beginning does say to him they need to do more tests to determine the cause of his deafness BEFORE having the cochear implants discussion, but Ruben never sees that doctor again. When he books his operation, he calls a different and random cochlear surgeon he finds online. Ruben is being prescribed by different doctors who probably don’t know each other

    • @andreacinefilo
      @andreacinefilo 3 года назад

      @@richfictionfighter I understand he didn't have time to read more information about the cochlear implants because he could not use internet in the community, so he had to sneak into Joe's office and use his computer. But after he has sold his van and his instruments, it cuts right to the surgical room, and I thought: shouldn't the doctors have explained to him what kind of operation he was going to do? Isn't that part of their procedure? Also, he sacrificed everything for this operation, so shouldn't he have asked them more information about those implants as a precaution? Was he so sure that he was going to receive his full hearing back?

    This movie was made for hearing people to understand the deaf experience. They definitely leave a lot unsaid about his drug addiction.

    For me this film was hard to watch at times. Not because it's violent or disgusting, but because the performance by Riz Ahmed is so raw and real. He's not playing a Hollywood stereotype. Ruben is not very likeable, he's impatient and rude, but beneath all that Ahmed shows his fear and insecurity.
    And poor Olivia Cooke seems on the verge of tears during most of her scenes with him.
    Thankfully, they don't put on showy, "give me an Oscar" performances. Their characters feel real and flawed.

    • @johnnycanuck2

      Other than one or two moments of outbursts that are relatively common of a struggling addict (or anyone in the midst of a sudden and jarring hearing loss) I found his character to be calm and understanding. A person thrown into an absolute soul tearing nightmare. His interactions with Joe kind of show that Joe doesn't expect anyone to be easy to deal with at the beginning. I kept waiting for that cliche'd moment where Riz's character loses it and goes off the deep end, but that never came. And I appreciated that a lot.

    I'm really with Alonso on this review cause I think Sound of Metal really lacks like, a certain journey for Riz Ahmed's character. He's a musician and a recovering addict, but it felt like the movie was not all that interested in those aspects despite the fact they are such huge drivers for the plot. It felt like midway through they were actually going to a good place with his character but then they introduce more conflict that kind of puts Ruben in an awkward situation, especially with how the relationship with his girlfriend ends up.
    The acting is fantastic and the singular focus on the sound and how you lose it is really fascinating, however, I think as a character study it's missing some action.

    Enjoyed the film, and found it very moving at times, but I agree with the dude with the big beard completely. I had the exact same problems with the exact same events. It all really confused me, and took me out of the film. Like, would a center like this really just permanently exile the dude for perusing options to regain his hearing? Controversy around the implants aside, that’s just cruel.
