I absolutely hate to be "that guy," but I teach a class on film music, so I just can't help myself... a musical sequences that exists as a fantasy (like in L'immensità) would be "internal diegetic." Unlike non-diegetic music, which exists completely separate from the world of the film, internal diegetic exists basically within the head/imagination of a character (or characters) within the film. It's a very common technique in modern musicals.
In any event, Alonso strikes me as someone who would rather be right than just think he's right and ignore new information that challenges that assumption (incidentally, my favorite type of person and an unfortunate rarity these days). If my assumption is accurate, please feel free to pass that on.
While you're at it, feel free to also share how much I appreciate your channel. I rarely get to talk about movies with anyone, so I'm grateful to have your videos to watch. No one got me the Table for One I had on my Christmas list, so perhaps I might have to make an inquiry one of these days and start saving up to treat myself. In the meantime, thanks again for all your great work.
Oh, and if you're looking for some underseen gems of 2023, I humbly recommend I Like Movies and Huesera: The Bone Woman as two of my favorites. I suspect you'll dig them both if you can find the time to catch up with them.

Loved your thoughts on why you chose the films you did!!! There are just way too many movies that haven't come out here yet ... American Fiction, The Zone of Interest, All of us Strangers, Society of the Snow, Saltburn. I missed Godzilla Minus One as it was screened for only 2 days!!!😫😫And even Poor Things hasn't come out yet, though lucky for me there was a one-off screening last weekend I made a point to catch... yep probably my film of the year too!! And Dream Scenario is my top most underrated film of the year... it's soooo much better than reviewers are giving it credit for!! And yesterday I finally saw the touching Perfect Days ... Kōji Yakusho deserved his Cannes win and deserves an Oscar nod for sure!!!

"Poor Things" really took me by surprise, in how much I loved it! Unlike Christy, I'm not a die hard Yorgos Lanthimos fan. He runs hot and cold for me. I certainly wasn't predisposed to liking any movie of his, but the buzz on this one as so huge, I had to see for myself. I was knocked out. What really pushed it up to another level for me is the last act, when Christopher Abbott's character shows up, and the resulting consequences. I hadn't been watching the clock or anything but, I was under the impression that the movie was already moving towards something of a happy ending, and suddenly Abbott enters the church, and a whole final act follows that was amazing. My favorite movie of the year was "Oppenheimer", and "Poor Things" is just ever so slightly behind it at number two.

Hey, I just subscribed to you guys recently and have been enjoying your content. I knew Alonso from his occasional appearance over on Schmoedown (rip). I know it's super presumptuous, but for future lists, I like the idea of building up to the mystery of the #1? I know Christie mentioned that this year was a smorgasbord of favorites so maybe Alonso goes from 10 to 1 while Christie just sticks with an alphabetical list?
I know that FYC with Perri, Scott and Jeff Sneider do their Oscar nominations 'backwards', too, but I think that's b/c the top of the list tends to have more consensus, especially when there are strong front runners and the mystery tends to be towards the bottom of the list where opinions tend to divide more (not always). Just a thought and wanted to throw the idea out there and thanks for your lists!

I haven't seen Poor Things, yet because I was on vacation in December and didn't get to the theater, but I can't wait to see it and I'm probably gonna love it. Rachel McAdams was excellent in Are you there God? It's me, Margaret; I agree. I can't wait to see L'immensità- I'm gonna watch that ASAP. Christy, thanks for championing “Scrapper”. I saw it based on your recommendation when you talked about it the first time. In a year where I didn’t really like a lot of the “big” releases, this sweet indie was something special. A really natural performance by the young actor playing the daughter. Harris Dickinson is a transformational kind of actor, compare this performance to the one he gave in “Beach Rats”. I hope they both get to continue making good movies.

Besides, there were movies that even when they had a wide release in 2023 were officially premiered in 2022, like 'M3GAN' and 'Talk to Me'. Still, I liked the way my top ten list ended up.

    9. Monster
    8. Past Lives
    7. The Boy and the Heron
    6. Poor Things

I was somewhat amazed that I have actually seen two of the movies on your list: Barbie and Godzilla Minus One. I disagree strongly about Barbie. I watched it because of the feminist themes, I'd heard it was a rare movie that could actually engage with adults on an adult level while entertaining kids as well. I did not find this to be true. What I saw was a kid's movie, and a toy movie, that had feminist themes running throughout it, but which worked those themes on the sort of superficial level that kids could understand. There were a few bits in there that kids might not catch but adults would, but not enough of them to make it an adult movie, really. I felt it was a waste of my time except the eye candy colors and sets were very nice: just not nice enough to justify my time and attention. And my wife liked it even less than I did, so it's not testosterone poisoning, in her case at least.
I liked Godzilla Minus One more, it did capture that original Godzilla energy. But I hated the protagonist. He was SUCH a coward and on so many levels. I wasn't mad at him for not killing himself like a good kamikaze should, but he should have TRIED to shoot Godzilla when he first meets him, and he shoulda married that woman he hooks up with straight up once they started living together. What a WUSSY. What a WASTE. I can't say exactly what happened at the end for spoiler reasons, but I will say the stupid git got WAY more than he deserved.
I'll prolly catch Oppenheimer, Killers of the Flower Moon and Bottoms when they hit the streaming services, but as for the rest, fuhgedabout it.
