- We were so completely blown away by "Poor Things" that we wanted to review it for you as early as possible. The latest from daring Greek auteur Yorgos Lanthimos is a truly inspired steampunk spectacle about a young woman's journey of self-discovery. Written by Tony McNamara, who also wrote Lanthimos' "The Favourite," based on the novel by Alasdair Gray. Starring Emma Stone, Mark Ruffalo, Willem Dafoe, Ramy Youssef, Jerrod Carmichael and Hanna Schygulla. In limited release Dec. 8, opens wider in the following weeks.

Totally wacko experience! All i had going into this was the awards the film won and was nominated for and that the so-called 'buzz' was strong, with just a scintilla of plot. Wasn't prepared for the concept and the direction the film takes. It's the Frankenstein story where turnabout's fair play. A bizarre vision totally realized but made credible and accessible. The icky medical aspects recalls David Cronenberg's "Crimes of the Future" but the satirical oddball tone makes this story more engaging with a heroine that manages in unlikely fashion to find herself. Costuming, set design, CGI urban landscapes are all eye-popping. Emma Stone gives an inspired performance with solid support from twisted Willem Dafoe and daffy Mark Ruffalo. And yes, hard to describe!
So glad you loved it too! Thanks for your insights, Marty.
If this movie doesn’t win production design at the Oscars I will start a riot. It’s has my favorite production design of all time.
Barbie is pretty impressive too, though,
@@BreakfastAllDay it’s my strong #2. But in terms of the “design” in production design, I think Poor Things is unbeatable, it’s a fully realized and coherent world spanning multiple countries and sets all with their own identities. Barbie is of course amazing, but it has less original design than Poor Things.
@@arthurvalladares5451 - Most of “Poor Things” production design looks rendered in a computer. Whereas, “Barbie” built physical sets. There is a universe where “Poor Things” wins best Visual Effects, and “Barbie” wins Best Production Design.
@@ChienaAvtzon Poor Things built enormous sets, larger than even Barbie. There’s CGI set extensions, but Barbie has a lot of that too.
Poor Things also has a significantly lower budget at around $35 million.
‘Barbie on absinthe’ and ‘David Lynch on meth’ are two of my favourite descriptions. This movie is a total feast for the senses and Emma Stone totally deserves an Oscar for her performance.
Now lets not forget Tony McNamara when the plaudits and awards are being talked about, he's written SO many good things he deserves more recognition.
I have to add Yorgos Lanthimos to the list of directors that have an automatic ticket bought by me when his movies come out.
I was introduced to him via The Lobster and I’ve been doing the same ever since. I’ve seen most but not all of his films, and every one is really good/interesting/unique.
@@Locusto199 We love The Lobster too!
This is probably my favorite movie of the year. It's presented in a way that makes you think the world is being filtered through a funhouse mirror, but in reality the looking glass is undistorted and the warped sensation you're experiencing is the one humans have created. Incredible filmmaking.
So glad you loved it too!
One of my absolute favourite directors working today. So super excited to see this. After seeing how excited Christy was coming out of the screening I was waiting for this review. You two are the two best movie critics out there right now ❤
So sweet, thank you for the generous words! Let us know how you like the film.
@@BreakfastAllDay And I would also like to add likeable
That one word right there . . . 'astonishing' . There are no words to describe how good Lanthimos films are, as nobody and I mean NOBODY makes fillms like Yorgas Lanthimos.
He is truly singular!
As much as I love Past Lives, I HOPE POOR THINGS WINS BEST PICTURE 😭 it’s way more fresh and innovative.
Both are excellent in extremely different ways! But Poor Things might be too weird for b.p.
I’ve loved Yorgos Lanthimos since I watched The Lobster at Sundance
Love this review! I’ll watch pro-Poor Things reviews all day until I can see the movie again :) I loved every shot and from the first one, with the blue dress, with those hard pleated sleeves - I knew this was going to be special. And then returning to that home of Victoria (was her name?) and seeing the coats of armor and that prison vibe - just one of so so so many thrills and since you mentioned you like the costume design I wanted to share that reflection - thank you :)
Yikes! Must be a wild film if Christy dropped the F bomb...Emma did SNL this weekend & she's a gem
This couldn’t have been better-put in my opinion! I found the similar joy I got from the movie just watching the two of you talk about loving it for the same reasons.
My partner and I saw it on NYE, empty theater - and barely spoke until the ride home we were so mutually overcome with what we had seen and couldn’t describe. I was on the brink of tears for the entire third act (and, honestly, many times before - Bella listening to the musician on the balcony amidst the story that had already unfolded, with those stunning visuals… I was gripped and undone). We had no idea what we were getting into, and I kept finding myself mouth-open in amazement giving in to the story and experience.
I already knew going in to the third act that it was one of the best and most surprisingly moving movies I’d ever seen. My description landed on - a beautiful, euphoric, absurd, sexual, haunting, and personally moving dream (the ones you rarely remember and ache from how profound it was and how you can’t share that universe or experience with others), but a real experience you can revisit.
We were so talked-out after an hour-plus trying to put it into words, I finally broke down and had to cry at how this thing had moved me so much.
10/10 in this house, too. 🥹🩵 Sending all the best to you both!
this movie is a masterpiece it’s hard to put into words what about it I like bc I simply loved everything it’s so wonderfully weird the camera work is literally flawless same with the costumes I’m blown away truly Emma killed it and really everyone in the cast did I’ll be thinking about it for a good week
After impressing me with 'The Favourite', I hope this is another Lanthamos movie I can get behind on.
I wasn't impressed but I'm still excited about this one lol.
It’s better.
At least the trailer gives a strong Jean-Pierre Jeunet and Marc Caro vibe (hyper realism?) - which is also a plus.
Yeah delicatessen is one of my all time favourites and this gaves a very similar feel of twisted yet funny and sweet absolutely fantastic
Oh man I'm more hyped than I already was now, can't wait to see this, but it comes out in almost TWO MONTHS here in Spain.
Oh wow! Look forward to hearing your thoughts once you do see it. Gracias por mirarnos en España!
Your enthusiasm is infectious. Can't wait!
Woo hoo! Enjoy.
Poor Things has been my most anticipated film of 2023 ever since the first trailer dropped months ago. Yorgos Lanthimos is easily one of my favorite directors working today. I'm so glad you both loved it and i'm even more excited to see the film very soon.
Awesome, we hope you love it too!
Mark Ruffalo such a magnificent actor, he does a superb work as a supporting role here. Meaning, he acts to serve the lead character who happens to be Bella, nevertheless he finds ways to shine and not overshadow Emma's work.
That's pure cinematic magic! Hugs from Peru, which .....again.....features in this film.
The capsule review:
Mr. Lanthimos's take on Mr. Gray's book dazzles & disturbs. Ms. Stone furiously jumps into Iconic Territory. Admired more than loved; still, it's Something Else Again.
And though both novel & film have male-gaze aspects and ethical quandaries that I seriously question, it's a genuinely vivid, original experience -- Terry Gilliam meets Ken Russell on Kenneth Anger's dime ---all 3 main male actors are expert, especially Mr. Youssef, Ms. Hunter and HANNA SCHYGULLA! are particularly choice, and La Belle Emma enters Moreau or Huppert or Redgrave realms of Absolute Artistry. Am very glad to have seen it.. Thanks as always, Christy and Alonso.
I'm just back from the theater. This movie is brilliant, in a completely strange and beautiful way. I think it should be watched by everyone. Thank you. K
I plan on seeing it next weekend! Thanks for reviewing it.
Report back afterward!
I love Lanthimos' films. I was already excited to see this and you guys giving it your stamp of approval only makes me want to see it more. And I'm glad to hear Ruffalo fits cuz his casting was the one aspect giving me doubts.
It is a delightfully odd and swaggering performance.
There needs to be an awards season category for how well Christy segues into the sponsorships every👏single👏time👏
Ha, we aim to entertain.
Most anticipated movie of the year for me! Can’t wait!!
Saw last night, absolutely loved it
When I watched the trailer, I said it looked aesthetically as if Terry Gillian and Wes Anderson make a movie together... 😆😆 Now I'm really excited about this film! I really love Yorgos Lanthimos movies. The scripts are always brilliant
Just saw this. No idea what this was really about. WOW. movie of 2023. I'll need to watch this again asap. Btw. There really wasnt too much mention of the music but man, the music in this movie and its weird notes is what makes it. The combo of visuals, performance and that maddening music.
And the score evolves with her -- it's rudimentary sounds in the beginning but grows sweeping and orchestral by the end.
I just watched ‘the killing of the sacred deer’ last night! I’m amped to see this new film!
The art direction! and it wasn't CGI -- actual sets!!!
Finally saw it …I loved this too👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼😉thanks for the review
So glad!
Saw it last night and WOW. I definitely went in with unfairly high expectations and I was still blown away almost constantly. Emma Stone is extraordinary, and I was also thrilled with all of the performances around her. The world created here feels like something out of a fantasy videogame or a dream state. I don't know how any of this was accomplished and I'm obsessed with it. I could have easily watched Emma Stone travel the world, accidentally terrorizing Mark Ruffalo, for a few more hours
(Selfishly) I want you guys to do a spoiler chat so you can gush about all the wonders of this film that you couldn't address in a spoiler free review lol
I’m on the same boat lol
I am so excited about this movie. Definitely, the film I most want to see in December. So happy you both loved it. Woo hooo!
Woo hoo indeed! Hope you enjoy.
Can’t wait to see the movie, and can’t wait to understand exactly what Christy means when she uses her favorite word-“specific.”
The segue into that sponsor was absolutely masterful holy shot
I was thinking..'not Poor Things, the book by Alasdair Gray?'. And it is! Amazing! Does this mean we can hope to dream for a movie of his masterpiece Lanark!?
Imagine a breakfast all day holiday shirt that looks like what Alonso is wearing, but, in the shirt, Alonso is dressed as Santa and Christy was there giving Kelly Ripa! 😍 I see it! 🩷🩷🩷
Hey Christy, I've just read your Poor Things movie review at Roger Ebert and I got sooo excited now; I can't wait to see this "movie of the year" 🎉 much love from Turkey ❤
Thanks for reading! You'll have to let us know what you think once you see it.
I know lists are arbitrary and mean nothing but I just got home from this and I think this might be the first time I agree with both of you for the best film of the year. I just haven’t seen anything like this in all of 2023, something this ambitious and this thematically daring that really makes good on every promise made early on. It’s rare I have read so much about a movie and still had it genuinely shock and surprise me many times throughout. This was one of my most anticipated films of the year and I knew more about it going in than I would’ve liked. But this film threw me for a loop in every single way. Truly the best movie of the year
I still have a few more movies from this year to watch, but this is definitely my favorite movie of 2023 at this point. I've been a fan of Emma Stone since her early Superbad days and I can see her winning a second Oscar for this. Mark Ruffalo was freakin' hilarious in this movie and I really hope he gets a Best Supporting Actor nomination.
Lots of people compare the story to Frankenstein, but there is a bit if Pinocchio there too with how Bella learns from people she encounters in her life.
LOVE YL's movies; cannot wait to see this one!! thanks for the review!!
Thanks Jane, hope you love it too!
Poor Things was my hands down favorite film of 2023. I hope everyone goes out to see it.
Glad you loved it too!
Christy: I don't know how to describe this movie.
Me: I don't even know what this movie is about. 😂
Feels so bizzare & never before seen.
Emma stone expressions and range though is so different, she behaves like a small baby girl.
Ok..because you love it Christie and Alonzo I will go in with a wide open mind.
The book is one of my favorites! twisted and funny! can't wait to see the movie 🔥👏
Glad to hear the book is good too!
have heard nothing but great things about this movie!! hope it becomes a success at the box office.
You'll have to let us know if you see it!
This is def on my list to watch, I forgot all about "The Favourite", it is also on my list.
Awesome, enjoy!
Will you do a spoiler review for this? Just finally saw it and would love to get into the weird details. In case you aren’t, I’d just like to say the very end made me laugh hysterically 😭.
I never liked the directors previous films but I liked this one. I walked out in the middle of "The Lobster." But Poor Things it had sensicle dialogue with some coherent plot. A big improvement
Can’t wait to see this! Stellar cast. Emma stone is working her way to the top of my favorite actress list.
Unrelated, are you guys going to play catch up on Radical?
Hmm, not sure! It's an insane time of year. Have you seen it?
Yes, and I can barely find any reviews online about it. Eugenio derbez is phenomenal and should be a part of award conversations. In some ways it’s a paint by number “inspirational teacher” trope but it is also deeply moving and touches on many issues not depicted very often. It’s definitely worth watching
Heyyyyy I used to watch you two all the time on your old show! So glad to hear and see you guys again? His name escapes me but was there not usually a third guy? Sort of looked like an older Ian Malcom. Great review, I loved this movie.
So glad you found us! You're probably thinking of Matt, he stepped away a couple years ago.
@@BreakfastAllDay That’s sad to hear but we each go on our own way. I hope he is content. I’m subbed and looking forward to more reviews.
@@urdaughtersbf We're glad you're here!
Love those ultra wide lenses
Oooooo I’ve been excited for Poor Things!! I love Emma Stone and the roles she chooses. I watched La La Land and Cruella 3 times in theaters and yes, I’m kind of embarrassed to say that 🙈 🤣 Great to hear you both enjoyed it!! I’m a recent subscriber and have been really enjoying your reviews 😎
Delighted to have you here, thank you! Let us know what you think of the film.
Don't be embarrassed. Like what you like. 😊
Don't be! I also think I watched La La Land in theater 3 times!
One of the best films of the year
Very pretty film, I especially liked the title cards and Dafoe’s home but it left me feeling a little cold. I saw parallels to Barbie in its immaculate production design (and doll-like fish out of water protagonist). I’m not sold on Lathimos being a genius. I think Mainstream audiences will view this as another Beau is Afraid
It's so much like Barbie: The fact that she lives this sheltered existence and has to go out into the world and push back against the patriarchy, only to come home and realize everything she needed was in her all along.
Absolutely blown away. The Favourite was among my top-10 favorite movies of the entire 2010s, and this may have even topped it. What an experience, that MUST be seen on the big screen!! Love you guys, best review channel by far!
Hi, I saw it last week and it was really remarkably crafted, directed, and greatly performed by Emma Stone. The script was brilliant and it was a stunning visual experience, but I found it too exhausting at the end. For instance, the act in Paris was too redundant and obvious, I almost disconnected until the last act started. I definitely admired it but If I had the opportunity I would not see it again, the more I think about the less I like it. Maybe I was expecting something more subtle and emotional, it worked but not completely !!
All props to Emma Stone, and the whole cast. It's all surprising and weird and unpredictable in the very best ways. One thing that caught me totally by surprise was what I guess you could call the third act, when Christopher Abbot's character enters the story. I had no real sense of time while watching the movie, but I thought it was just about over when suddenly he came along. Then there is a whole big elaborate section with him, and it elevated Emma Stone's "Bella" and the whole movie even more! I was already totally satisfied, and then it got even stronger and emotional. Stellar film. Easily my favorite Lanthimos film .
You guys putting in a child in your videos is like MARVEL setting up the Young Avengers. 🤣🤣
Also, is there a place where you guys did a review for the Luke McFarlane hallmark Christmas movie Catch Me If You Claus?
I don't watch trailers and haven't seen a Poor Things trailer, but, I'm excited for Poor Things! 😍😍 I can't wait! Soo excited for Emma Stone! I didn't even know Mark Ruffalo was in it either so that's exciting!
We did not see it (although maybe Alonso has), was it good?
I don’t really like steam punk, but I heard it’s the healthiest way to prepare punk
Is it better than Cocaine Bear?
We don't want to live in a world where we have to choose 😄
I can’t wait to see this
I'm excited to see this movie!😊
OMFG!!! What did I just watch? And I LOVED IT!!!
Right? Isn't it incredible?
I just saw it and i know its one of those films I will be thinking about a week from now
Do you guys love ALPS?
saw it last night and loved it!
Gasper Noe is probably more rough. As is Lucio Fulci.
I want to touch on something since you mentioned it. There has been some backlash on social media regarding the sexual content of the film. Some people (even known critics) suggest the sexual content of the film is quite problematic. Do you guys feel that's warranted criticism, or will it depend on who's watching the film?
Not at all, it's essential to the character's journey.
It will be very divisive, not at all the mainstream crowdpleaser that the Oscars favor.
Thank you! @@BreakfastAllDay
Loved the movie, but I feel it won’t endure over time. Maybe I’ll watch it another time at most.
Wow, movie of the year. That is a big claim. We will see. There are some good movies this year.
I just finished watching all 10 of the best picture nominations and while i enjoyed all the films quite a bit, Poor Things was my favorite by far--just visually stunning, hilarious, and the most delicious kind of bizarre✨
It really is so unique! Good job catching up with all 10 films.
As someone who is not exactly a Yorgos stan -- I admire and applaud, yet am also always aware of the directorial hand in ways that don't always hit my solar plexus, it's ALL so subjective -- and who entirely respected the source material without losing their mind over it, I have to say, you two have sold me. Was always going to see it, but now, I simply MUST. Any fillum that can get a "Breaking The Waves" reference or Hanna Schygulla shout out is automatically ahead of the curve, and we've been waiting for Ms. Stone to hit that next level,of artistry, which clearly she does and has. Woohoo, hoorah, hopla. Thanks, as always, Christy and Alonso.
Can't wait to hear your thoughts, thanks always David!
Finally saw this today, and while I love Lanthimos, this particular aesthetic is clearly his happy place, and it's getting Tim Burton predictable. It also could've been tighter; shave 20 minutes off it, and the audience I saw it with would've enjoyed it much more. Hoping he shifts gears next, a la Killing of a Sacred Deer.
Sorry you didn't love it as much as we did!
If I think the favorite is out there I'm sure this is too. But I've seen Salo so I think I can handle it. Though I wish I hadn't seen Salo.
Continuing our exchange from The Zone of Interest, this film and American Fiction are perfect examples of films that do it the right way and have total clarity. We understand everything, and so we can actually judge the material. You both seem to love Poor Things, and Alonso seems to have loved American Fiction. I don't want to use the word ambiguous because films can have ambiguity and still have clarity. In other words, we understand something is meant to be ambiguous. Confusion and ambiguity are two different things. Films like TZI and Power of the Dog are confusing because they leave out details, especially regarding characters. For half the movie, I had no idea who anyone was in Power of the Dog. There's simply nothing brilliant about omitting information about characters so we're confused. In Poor Things, everything is laid out with complete clarity. There is never any confusion. We understand it, and we can decide whether it's brilliant or not. What I'm saying is that critics/award committees need to stop rewarding superficial/artificial brilliance and actually reward real brilliance.
must!watch!
Are you guys going to do a spoiler review?
Maybe ... would you like us to?
We like everything you do, so of course, but I need to see it first!
Yes…please!
This film. Truly splendid.
Truly! Glad you loved it too.
Emma, Yorgos & Tony seem very much like a winning formula atm. Awards season between Poor Things, The Holdovers, American Fiction, May December, Past Lives & Passages will be very interesting! So is it shaping up like buddies Ruffalo & RDJ could be up against each other?
I said it with Rachel senott and Emma seligman I’ll say it with my boy YORGOS and Emma stone and same thing with deniro and Scorsese… I NEVER WANNA SEE A LANTHIMOS FILM WITHOUT EMMA STONE!! usually when mainstream actresses or actors go indie or wierd it can be cringe like Brendan Fraiser the whale but here where an actress and director know EXACTLY how to play it and have COMPLETE TRUST in each other…. THTAS filmmaking
Christy & Alonso, tonight I watched "Fingernails" with Jessie Buckley and Liz Ahmed. I was completely charmed and thought the central performances were sublime. Would love to hear you 2 on this quirky romance. The weirdness reminds me of Yorgos Lanthimos. People will need to suspend their critical faculties about the central premise :)
Great flick. Emma Stone is my hero
So this just jumped up to the top of my "to do" list next week- can't wait!
I mean a 9.8 is basically just a 10. Yeah it's a great movie with emma stone best performance. She took thus character from basically a infant to a full grown woman
I had a lot of fun with this movie. Yorgos was like, I'm gonna mash up Pinocchio and Frankenstein and make it super duper horny. It's also really funny.
It's SO funny.
... this year had a lot of mediocre in it, an untame and outrageous film is long overdue: I am so happy you guys loved it this much. I can't wait.
double 10s..... and just when I thought I couldn't possibly be more excited to see this. I can hardly contain myself!!!
you should watch the new godzilla. Up there in terms of best movies of the year and it cost 15 million dollars? Feck
Reviewing it Friday!
@@BreakfastAllDay 👏👏👏
This is one of the films I've been waiting for, I can't wait to see it.
Enjoy!
I see nick is picking out the sponsors😂
Yes, he is very helpful :)
My city not getting it til the 21st lol😅
Update: it was good. Theater was laughing throughout
I was hoping Brian Aubert would be on here 😢
He'll be back.
❤️❤️❤️
I don't think I'm mature enough to watch this. ❤
Didn’t you guys think it was rather brutally unusually vulgar ? And hostile in its portrayals .. lol
You better love this movie 😂
Ha, we did.
Alonso, your reviews always stand out because of your sharp mind and unique perspective. Your opinions truly matter and add so much depth to every discussion. By the way, your intellect and charm make your insights even more captivating. Keep being amazing!
Kudos to Mark Ruffalo for clapping the cheeks of Emma Stone and Julianne Moore in two different movies in two extend long scenes. Bravo.
What a legend
