great video! do you know the real temperature when low speed fan turns on and temp when high speed fan turns on?thank you!
+daniele d'arconte thanks! Best I could find with a quick Google is someone that used an OBD2 reader connected to a 2002 986 and found the fans came on low speed at 212F and high speed at 216F. They switch off at 205F.
@@HelpMeDIY thank you,my low speed turns on at 102 celsius, than stops at 98.but in a hot day i was going to mountain and i read 107.without earing high speed turns on.but high speed turns on when i turn on my air cond,so i suppose high speed works, but the temp i think is too high

Thank you, Aaron. I'm a few years behind you and I learn so much from you. Thank you for these.
+@tjomara3812 you’re welcome!
Great video once again Aaron. Always look forward to your detailed explanations. I have carried out quite a few maintenance items on my 987 based on your info and tips.
+Chuck M thanks so much. I love to hear the stories of how the videos are helping!
Outstanding detail once again! Great content makes it easier to understand the coolant flow and location of all the components on a mid engine 👌.
+oigres maldonado thanks man!!
Draining the system thru the yellow arrowed Torx 30 plug is easier than disconnecting hoses and the rate can be controlled by the vent switch in the trunk. Once hot, It may take 3 brief circuits around the neighborhood to burp air out of the system with the overflow bottle cap left loose. Each of the 3 short trips may invite addition of about a liter more antifreeze. If/when level in bottle falls below "min" a red light will flash next to temp needle on dashboard to invite you to stop and add. Seems idling in place does not shake/burp air out of the system, but car movements (driving around) do. if a 4th trip indicates all the air got out and level is between min and max, then it's time to tighten the filler cap and shut off the vent switch, If you used only 3 gallons instead of 4 it means 1 old gallon was trapped in, but since the recommended antifreeze has a life expectancy of 5 years or 150000 miles, overall the 75% new mix will still offer very good corrosion protection and conditioning for the pump's rotary seal.
+Alexander Schonfeld that’s why I prefer to vacuum fill coolant. No air trapped in the system the first time 😎

very helpful, looking forward to see similar ones for suspension, engine block, ac and brakes
+luckyfarru peruse the channel and I’m sure you’ll find lots more helpful info 😉🍻
Great video and explanation of the cooling circuit and items ... I don't ever remember hearing fans at the front of my 987.2 but I did near the engine bay when it was idling and hot.
+Rog Burton thanks! I’m not positive, but I would assume that model also has fans for the radiators :)
That's the engine fan. Comes on when the engine gets hot.
Great Boxster newbie video. Thanks for the great detail.

How many radiators does the Boxster S 3.2L Have?

Can you do one one changing out the chain tensioners and/or the manual transmission oil ? Not a ton of clear info on how to do this. Your videos have helped me save $ and understand the car better. They are also a great addition to the info in “The Bentley” & “The 100 Projects” books. Thanks for making these.
+Charles Mookus you’re in luck! I already have one for the transmission oil. Just search “Boxster transmission oil” on RUclips and it’s the first result. As for the tensioner I actually need to do that myself. Just have to figure out how first...
@@HelpMeDIY D’oh!
Clear and detailed. Have you one to change the starter motor?
+julesbaby47 thanks! No, I haven’t had to tackle that yet
Thanks
+Rosevelt Rose you’re welcome 🍻
Nice video, especially coloring the flow appropriately.
Should you consider an update of this video to add the info given in the comments regarding bleed valve, I'd like to add the following tidbit about the thermostat.
You colored the path of the cooled coolant out of the radiator into the thermostat and out of it into the water pump. This could be understood by the uninformed that it's the coolant's temperature that controls the opening/closing of the thermostat. This is not the case. It is controlled by the temperature of the coolant tee'd off from its pathway to the radiator, into the thermostat (partially colored red @11:22, saw what you did there! 😀).
It flows through the thermostat back into the waterpump*.
As soon as the coolant has reached ~80°C/180F, or whatever the specced temp of the thermostat, it will start to open a little thus letting cold(er) coolant into the stream into the water pump and into the engine.
*it must flow through the thermostat and back into the waterpump as else there would be no feed into the waterpump in cases when the engine is warming up (I.e. thermostat closed) whilst at the same time the A/C is on (because that shuts off the flow through the heat exchanger, the only alternative path back to the water pump).
+Bernard McLake thanks for taking the time to provide the additional info!
The coolant level should be checked with the engine running. It will always be "low" when the engine is off.
Thank you!
I was about to add coolant
That was super. I have just bought a RS 60 2008 3.4S. I have the 101 projects. I also have the Bently service manual. Any extra information I can look up. I lost a little coolant. But think the dealer didn’t put the coolant cap on fully. I’ve got a new cap on the way. But it’s a .00 , so must get a .04
+Michael Keohane thanks! I think you will really like this channel 😉🍻
Coolant collection tube?
I found oil in my coolant. The head gasket has been done so I'm guessing it must be Oil cooler. Is there anything else could leak oil into coolant: water/oil pump?
+@christame994 oil cooler is probably a good place to start!
@@HelpMeDIY thanks the o rings were pretty bad so hopefully that was it!
My Boxster just had a major coolant leak..I’m trying to save some money and figure it out myself , one night I did a long pull with the tiptronic trans and I noticed the temp light blink, next thing you know there’s tons of smoke and all my coolant is like Niagara Falls , when I add more it just keeps coming out to 0
+JD Duran it will probably be obvious what needs fixing if you can get underneath to look
I'm not certain but my guess is that the two "valves" in the diagram at position #10 are the coolant cap and the bleeder.
As a side note, I believe that the squiggly symbol above those valves is the symbol for pressure relief, which would confirm my supposition.
+Stefan Shapiro the diagram clearly says “Shut-off valve”, but if they meant the cap I would think they would just say cap 🤷♂️
+Stefan Shapiro that part would make sense
@@HelpMeDIY I agree that the language seems obscure but from a flow diagram standpoint, a pressure relief "cap" is actually just an implementation detail for a pressure relief "valve".
@@stefanshapiro1245 I’ll buy that
hi i have problem with my porsche boxstrer 986 2002 every morning i need to up coolant is no leaking i think problem is with coolant tank when engine is hot coolant in tank is cold mey be you now whaits wrong?
+Arunas Patrikas you have a leak
is not leaking only coolant need top up when i driving
Guys- NEED HELP. My 2003 is leaking coolant only while idling. Last week, I added about a gallon of distilled water as I didn't see a reading on the 'min max' near the full line. I hoping this is the system handling an overfilled situation. Any idea's or advice?
+Josef Bleaux why do you think it’s only leaking while idling?
@@HelpMeDIY cuz when I fire it up it starts leaking like Niagra Falls. Shut it off- not a drop.
@@josefbleaux6724 I see. "only when idling" infers to me that you mean it's not leaking when it's running, not at idle. Which is not what you meant. Which makes more sense. You mean it's only leaking while the engine is running. So when it's pressurized you have a leak somewhere. Now just look around and figure out where it's coming from.
@@HelpMeDIY ok thanks Buddy! PS your serpentine belt video saved me $345.. that's what the mechanic was gonna charge.
@@josefbleaux6724 glad it helped! 🍻
we have problems temperature is always up, in our car hot water is not turning from back to front radiator and big pipes are all cold we changed radiator and termostat but it did not help
+Kapitaloto Otokapital that’s not good…
@@HelpMeDIY how can i Fix it ?
@@ceyhunozturk2471 I just told you everything I know 😆
Liquid does NOT compress at all. That's what hydraulics is based on.
+Dave yes, but your coolant isn’t always in liquid form, is it?
Valve number 10 looks like the manual venting valve which is located underneath the plastic shield up on the expansion tank. That is manually operated to let the trapped air escape from the circuit after the circuit has been flushed up and refilled.
+thejack01 ah I bet you’re right! I don’t know why seemed to assume it was electronic 😆
@@HelpMeDIY the spring icon up on the valve diagram tells that is manually spring operated. The electric solenoid operated valves have the diagonal line in them. 💪💪😉😉 thanks for the video I have found very interesting!!
