- Yes, the midsize sedan segment is losing sales to SUVs. But, there are still a lot of 4-door sales to be had. And the manufacturers who value the segment are fighting harder than ever for buyers by delivering more for less, what made sedans popular in the first place. And that’s where this all-new Hyundai Sonata enters our picture.

When you see this car in person on the road you realize just how nice looking this car really is! It has beautiful lines and the front end does not look like a catfish. It's actually attractive.
I knew when this Sonata came out that it was gonna start a trend with full rear taillight. They make a good looking car these days that doesn’t follow most of the trends. I’m a long time Honda and Toyota owner but Hyundai has become a good company and their ideas are trickling up and down the market. Kudos! Philly ❤️
Their way better than before but quality still isn’t as good as Honda or Toyota heard some oil pans in sonatas are already leaking with barely any miles have to wonder how that car will be in 5 years.
Wow is that the same guy from the retro reviews? How cool he's a veteran 💯
He is!
He created Motorweek in 1981 and has been its main presenter for years.
I never knew how long Motor Week has aired. Thanks guys 👌
@BillHK it IS! John Davis, host since the unaired pilot from 1978!
Yes, it’s John Davis, he has been hosting Motor Week since the 80s, and Motor Week posts older reviews on RUclips.
The best looking Sonata in years! Great job Hyundai 👍🏼, now I'm ready to see what the N-Line will have in store.
Love the way it looks! Definitely doesn't blend in with anything else on the road. Great job Hyundai!
4:04 Oh, i would love to see this retro review!
Another great video Mr. Davis I hope you stay with motorweek as long as you can I been with the show since October 81 keep the good stuff coming
The SEL Plus is the way to go for features and price, but the Limited is awesome!
IT'S GOT SMAHT PAHK!!!!!
The mid range trim is the way to go. I would definitely choose this over an Altima or Malibu any day.
Altima is the every person choice....chevy sucks for the most part...this def looks the best...id go hyundai/kia if i was to buy
Malibu isn’t long for this world. It’s reported that the current model will be the last along with other GM cars.
Very hard to choose it over an Accord though unless lower cost is your #1 consideration.
@@smokesgtp And poor resale.
@@EricFortuneJr. I could see someone preferring a Camry I suppose, but the Accord is just so damn good, especially in Touring trim. It can be had for under invoice as well if one has any ability to negotiate...
It's crazy how good this car looks inside and out for being just $30k, a similar car from a European manufacturer will be double that.
Its really neat to see the comparison between the '89 and '21 models. I'd love to see that '89 review in its entirety.
0:33 why im so saaaad
-hyundai sonata
When I saw this back in '19 I thought it was a concept.
It looks a lot better in person than video.. especially at night time..
For the money, it’s way better than any car on the market right now. I said it
Boy these guys are really beating the hell out of this cars....
Anemic performance. But there’s obviously a market that doesn’t care.
There's a Turbo version N line.
I’m not going to lie, the front end of this is so amazing! I never thought I would say a “regular” car would look exotic (sporty) but this is my favorite looking front end out of all the cars in its segment. The rear end looks kinda half assed. The front end, spectacular
Should have called it the Hyundai Catfish
It's a good looking car as long as you're not looking at it head-on. The rear end is too busy IMO.
Wow your test track has really grown over
The kia K5 looks miles better
nah the design of that is to kia
I am a Honda guy but I am really starting to like Hyundai/Kia ad Mazda over Honda and Toyota.
You’re a Honda guy and now you know Honda makes garbage now
Dont ever bring Toyota near that h word, Toyota still makes good cars with superb quality and reliability still to this day unlike Honda which has been sitting on there laurels with quality and reliability going downhill, just because Your weeny Honda is bad doesn’t mean you have the right to criticize too as well because unlike Honda, Toyota still makes high quality cars
Too=Toyota
Stupid autocorrect
My mother just got one yesterday but a 2021 glowing yellow gas 1.6l Turbo sel pluse. We where originally going to get a hybrid but if you want all the tech the limited is the way to go the blue and sel didn't have a whole lot of features and overall was a bit to expensive for us. Got all the tech we needed for cheaper. Minus the mpg and sunroof and some other tech but the sel pluse works for us. So far our family has had 4 sonatas now. 2013 15 18 and now 2021. This is definitely the highest trim model we've ever owned. All other where base models. Looking forward to cruising in ours a lot in the future. And possibly in another few years get a hybrid. Still got pretty good mpg with all the other hyundais around 40 mpg highway. Mainly where the miles will be going. 😃.
Have come aa long way since I sold them back in 89'.
I love my Hyundai, except for the resale value.
Pay less to begin with, get less back at trade in. Numbers are pretty similar.
Still better than nissan and ford😅
It's not pretty, but it doesn't look like the rest. I like it, but it sucks that there there's no V6.
Just be prepared for a meteor drop in resale value. You'd be much better off buying the Honda Accord or Honda Insight.
I just can't bring myself to buy a foreign car. Why can't domestic manufacturers offer a sedan??????
Looks good. I still like sedans
More like a hatchback 4 door. UGLY AS SHIT.
SEDANS DON'T LOOK LIKE HATCHBACKS
That styling... oof!
Grille. Just can't.
The grill, the goofy strips that are definitely not going to date well, and the depressed looking back end. Hyundai has some decent designs with this certainly isn't one of them. It's just a convoluted mishmash of ideas that don't gel
@@lancemannion4113 "It's just a convoluted mishmash of ideas that don't gel" BMW in a nutshell. Thanks.
@@user-tt2fh8nf1o haha. Somebody seems a little tender defending the integrity of a Korean car company. Didn't mean to hurt your feelings - like what you like. But I think the consensus would agree with me here. Although they've had a few styling successes and the reliability is getting better, this thing is an automotive abortion. Over and out
@@lancemannion4113 "consensus" Please. Talk about being delusional. It's spelled "nobody".
The altima is trash
Awesome fuel ratings. Wow.
Camry is the best option, reliability and resale value kills Hyundai
The difference is the Camry you can pretty much be guaranteed is going to age much better. You don't get a track record of Toyota by fluke, and the last thing they're going to do is loosen the reins with the competition stepping it up. I'll take your Toyota over pretty much anything if I'm keeping it long term
@Jonathan A well cost-cutting measures and using thinner door frames or less plush carpet doesn't speak to the mechanical integrity of a vehicle. with the global market as it is and the Koreans coming on strong the Japanese heavy hitters (Honda and Toyota specifically) are doing what they can to keep their prices down, while the functional integrity stays solid. Toyota will still be on the road with very little maintenance far down the line. It's too early to say whether the Koreans have the magic bullet for longevity. It certainly seems to be hit and miss. Some swear by them others have absolute money pits. But you'd be very hard pressed to find anybody that's had a Toyota for a long time that's had recurring or persistent problems.
I prefer the Sonata
The designers at Hyundai must have been fish lovers......has to be one of the uglier front end designs ever.
The sides looks a bit like the Chevrolet Malibu.
When you hear 3.2 tons CO2 per year in economical car😒. What do dose gas vaporizers make
Looks better than the BMW.
Said nobody, ever
@@lancemannion4113 I just did. You blind? No wonder you shill for an ugly BMW.
@@user-tt2fh8nf1o if you honestly think that this design trumps anything by BMW, your prescription needs updating my friend 😆
@@lancemannion4113 Better than the latest with the pig nose shaped grills. Please get your eyes checked and stop liking your own cringeworthy comments.
@@user-tt2fh8nf1o the difference is there's making statements that stand out from the crowd, that will age well and probably be copied - unlike Hyundai who does nothing but poor copies and heinous interpretations of what they think cars should look like. Not to mention abysmal resale. Until they get up to the level of the Japanese marquees, they will always be a wannabe brand trying to keep up.....by poorly copying and designing mildly retarded fish that look like this car
It looks like a catfish...
Nah the 98-02 Camaros look like catfishes.
.Tech N9ne - Red Kingdom.... Trump train rolling this week
sorta went off the tracks Saturday...
@@bill90405 bro he’s got the Supreme Court on his side. All those lib locations (Detroit, Philly, Atlanta, Milwaukee, Vegas) were printing ballots election night which is why they sent their count staff home.
have a nice day.
thanks and you have a blessed day.
Disappointed with the push button crap for the gear select.
Man that front end just kills this car, those lights and grille are just awful. Every time I see one on the road I go EWWWW!!! They are making great cars but need help with the looks on the Sonata.
They went more traditional when this generation debuted and sales tanked. Proves that new looks bring sales. Kind of like the ever increasing fins of the 50's
SUVs and crossovers are overrated!
Good car with an ugly catfish face. What is wrong with elegance? Toyota, Hyundai, and Kia are now all offering ugly, awkward designs, and the Accoid is no beauty either. The Mazda 6 and Subaru legacy at least have a calm, mellow look. Angry cars are not a sign of designer sanity.
Looks like a ford mondeo
Cool
Dont buy Kia or Hyundai ... My moms 2015 Kia Soul burns oil like mad, i have to add oil weekly and it only has 81k miles.
@Jonathan A - Yes we use full synthetic motor oil every 5k miles, sometimes earlier.
Bummer I have a Genesis Coupe 125K not one problem have Her get a compression test that could tell a lot of whats going on also is the warranty still active?
Hyundai and Kia have very well made and reliable vehicles. When they come across a major issue they are very quick to address it and repair it. I have owned many Hyundai vehicles and NONE of them have had any major mechanical issues or have ever used a drop of oil.
The newer GDI engines from Hyundai and Kia need oil changes at 3k or sludge can develop really fast. I've seen a 2017 Elantra with under 40k sludged up. My friends 2008 Elantra went over 200k and had no issues when he sold it off. Don't go to 5k on these newer engines.
@@TheAdventureAuto 3K is to soon your not letting the oil do its job and your just wasting oil and money.
Why would they make all the power number so similar? Seems stupid. Top trims should have at least 260 hp like usual.
I believe the souped up engine model that normally competes with the top trim Accord and Camry doesn't come out till next year.
@@oldtwinsna8347 i hope so it's a great design!
Why no plug in hybrid? All hybrids should be plug in.
Upgrade to 4K cameras
It's still a public television (mpt) broadcast. make a contribution
@@Drknnja the motortrend channel is definitely not a public channel
Are you the same guy crying about 4k on every video? Who even notices the difference???
@@tuomasandersson3889 One of the many I would hope. And its very easy to notice. Motor trend video quality is garbage.
You're first one I've ever heard. 1080p is good enough. Useless to spend more.
Ugly, ugly car!
It looks like someone crashed a Ford Fusion and used chicken wire to put the grill back together.
Hyundai keeps ripping off Ford designs from 3-5 years prior, and then tweaking them to look worse!
The acceleration is too slow, ~9 seconds 0-60 for the hybrid and even the turbo takes ~7.5. The Accord hybrid does it in under 7 seconds!
Tell that to the new Sonata N Line
@@datdemoman1145 Ya, the N Line is much better. It’s not an apples to apples comparison though. Would be better if each trim were competitive against its peers. Also some people want a balance of power and efficiency. With such a big performance gap between the hybrid and N Line (almost 4 seconds 0-60!), would be nice if Hyundai offered an electrified model that does 0-60 in under 7 seconds.
They should have stayed with all the designs from the 2010 lineup...How many times are they gonna redo all the designs? Every car is dated the year after...They were on the right track now they look cheap and tacky.
I just can't get over the catfish looking front end. I would rather have a 3 yo version with the 2.0 Turbo and 240 hp.
The N Line is out now with 290 hp
It’s still a Hyundai. 👎🏾 I’ll take a Honda, Mazda, or Toyota.
so you’re only judging cars based on the. brand?
I like how you can’t comment on the limo video
Jesus died so we would all be royalty of God’s kingdom
These hold no value. Even if mint at 3 years
Check back in 3 year for this body style.
Hyundai is Korean for : Good for 11 months, and poor resale.
Unsubscribed
Styling is horrible, ya it has alot of technology and gadgets, but how long till these new engines start eating rod bearings and knocking , fancy is one thing and dependable is another.
Check back in 7 or 8 years once these have hard mileage on them.
Hyundai has always made ugly cars. So has kia. Kia sephia and sportage were a joke when they came out in 1994-ish
~ $40K (including tax, title, and doc.) for a Hyundai! 😂
