I'm from the UK, I know Akala as a Political commentator of sorts, a poet, author, and general heavyweight intellectual. I didn't know he was a rapper either, despite him seemingly identifying as that first. Didn't doubt for a minute he'd be stellar at it, seems to be at whatever he turns his hand to, and even if he wasn't I knew I was about to learn something. It breaks my heart the clowns we end up with in Government when people like him walk amongst us.

I’ve always listened to this (as a Black Brit) and assumed naturally that he was talking to a predominately white British audience - and that would make sense. Talking to them like a friend who is educating you on a topic that you aren’t particularly strong on, through no fault of your own as you haven’t been taught or exposed to it. Which is why the “white working class” lyrics really hit home with me because it closed that gap on “how different” we are, and that we are the same and we should both fight inequality.

Yep. Black and White people in the UK live exactly the same and have the exact same struggles when your poor. Race doesn’t actually exist it’s just a concept that the media and social media especially promote to keep us divided and going against each other instead of going against the rich. I am a 60 yr old, woman from the UK and I have learnt so much from Akala, also Dave, Mic Righteous and of course Wretch 32 who makes me wish I was 20 years younger lol, I don't catch all the bars but I'm trying and loving it.

Been lucky enough to meet Akala after one of his gigs and got to ask him a few questions, one of which was if he had any advice on writing a book and his answer was “Be consistent and work every day toward what it is you want to achieve”. He stayed after that gig for ages just talking and hanging out with his fans. Really decent, humble guy who is obviously blessed in many creative aspects but mostly as an inspirational human.
Love your reactions and I look forward to the rest of his FITBs. Also check out his albums. He has a very eclectic style. Thieves Banquet is a very good album.

I am a 51 year old white Brit. I have been watching Akala for years, he speaks nothing but facts. In the UK, the working class are all the same, predominantly living in the same areas, especially within the big cities. My friends are from virtually every race and creed, we are more integrated compared to the US, however we still have racism within this country giving every person of colour, extra challenges in life. In the rural areas racism is much more pronounced. Hopefully in the future “The truth will out” and history will be the defining measure of education.

I live rural Yorkshire and there is no racism here . 90% of the community are white but the thetherr 10% are treated no different at all. Colour isn't important it character here.

Akala said at the age of 6 he realised his mum became his white mum due to the social construct. I don't think you as a white man had to realise that. At no point did I say I KNOW EXACTLY WHAT IT IS TO BE MIXED RACE. In fact, I admit I have no idea because I have 2 black parents so how would I understand that. One can only listen. Akala, Mic Righteous and Lowkey, My top 3 from the UK. They all did songs together too. They were, or still are part of a movement called the Peoples Army. Logic(the UK one) is also part of it, and I mentioned in an earlier comment that he mentioned Kool Herc and other Hip Hop pioneers both from the US and UK in his FITB pt1. Akala has two Ted Talks, And also spoke at Oxford University, just like Lowkey, who is also an activist. The book you were talking about is written by him. This guy came from a poor working class family very similar to myself. He's a virtual bloody genius. He's addressed Oxford University. He did this with no radio airplay. He's fantastic. I'd recommend every work he's ever done. Please set up a po box I'd like to send you over something from him.

He is the best of a blessed UK scene, and that is a massive complement as the top UK rappers are among the very best lyricists globally.
Have to also recommend you check out Lowkey who is the only other guy who can operate on this level (conscious UK rapper of Iraqi descent, also highly educated), maybe starting with a FITB to keep a context for comparison

About the "picnic" part: You seemed to miss the fact (or chose not to mention) that there were actual picnics held around lynchings, where townsfolk would bring their family to a lynching and have a meal around the hanging corpse...sometimes taking souvenirs such as toes or fingers. These lynchings weren't private, "never spoken of" events. Sometimes they were simply public celebrations of murder.
This was happening in the lifetimes of our elders. We're not talking ancient history here

The word 'picnic' did get twisted into a 'pun' by the people organising lynchings - but the word itself pre-existed the lynchings - it was originally a french term for outdoor dining, which was then anglicized to the form we know now and meant sitting outside for a meal. The term used in lynchings was a 'play' on that original word. I have seen a few claims online that it is the origin of the word, but this was retrospectively applied.
Or he could be confusing it with the word pickanniny. It is a pidgin word form, derived from the Portuguese pequenino ("very small", a diminutive version of the word pequeno, 'small', also used in Spanish).

Thank you for your help educating. As a working class white person in the UK.. although I cannot relate in a sense of the plight of African people, this freestyle has captivated me either since it was released. It makes my hairs stand up every time I listen and I’m so glad it’s captivating people even now. The structural racism and prejudice still exists massively today in the UK I can’t speak for America although it’s clearly there if you watch the news. The transcript really woke me up to the way of the world and the history of systemic racism. Thank you for opening my eyes further. Love x

Akala is British and is talking to a British audience in the main and tho some of us know, the things he’s saying, we are not taught American history more than the basics, and think he’s trying to educate the young black & mixed race kids here that there more to life than trappin,, and he after all a lecturer in history and economic’s, With the focus black history. He’s was also one of the founding members of the hip hop Shakespeare company, very clever man with a lot to say and teach the young black and mixed kids in the Uk

Like a huge amount of English words, "Picnic" comes from an old French word. In this case "Pique-nique", a gathering with food. There are no racial connotations to the word whatsoever.
As for more Akala stuff: The other 3 FITB videos, his F64 videos, his songs Maangamizi, Murder Runs The Globe, Find No Enemy.
Despite what many will try to claim Akala is not a professor, nor does he teach at Oxford University (Or any university for that matter), he once gave a presentation at Oxford University, as many other celebrities do. Akala is great but he does do a bit of selective editing of history to better fit his narrative, which can push a lot of people away who have a wider understanding of certain times and events. It's a shame because when he is on point, he is really on point. Another amazing conscious rapper is half-British, half-Iraqi Lowkey, he has a couple of FITBs and some fantastic tracks you might want to delve into.
Just to let you know, homophones and wordplay weren’t just invented in the modern era. Just because a word has a definition, doesn’t preclude it from being used within a different, winking context. Similar to how “cracker” could mean 3 different things, “whip cracker” field overseer/slave driver, “oat cracker” an empoverished person who cracked their own oats to eat, or a person from Florida/GA. Likely, it was used as all three simultaneously.

Absolutely but that simply isn't the case here. The claim that picnic has a racial connotation is less than 25 years old, it was never used as anything other than a gathering to eat food, ever. It's simply one of those cases where somebody has taken a word and completely fabricated a false history for it.
If you really want a food word that does have a history of racial connotations, the burning alive of black folk used to be called a Barbecue.
@@BunniMonster the confusion seems to have come about because many lynchings if blacks took place at what you would describe as a picnic, as a casual showpiece/ entertainment for the families enjoying their food / afternoon.. So the racial association with the event is there although I agree, that is not what the word means or where it originated.
TY - the unpacks here are great. I think I've seen Akala presented as a speaker during at least a few Oxford Union sessions and it sounds like he's involved with a lot of education efforts. More power to him. Someone else from the UK who's got a huge mind on his shoulders and is great to listen to when he talks about culture is Goldie (the Metalheadz drum and bass label founder).

Akala is a historian. And is often called on by some of the oldest universities in the world. To speak on black history (not American black history) but thousands of years ago in Africa. He speaks truth and nothing butt.
