I am a white English man. I have served in the forces and sworn an oath of allegiance to the crown. I am embarrassed by the facts here. I love being English, but we have to be honest about our history. It's not great.
Thank you for your service, yes the history isn't great, only great for the benefactor. But the great thing about history, regardless of how appalling it may be, it should be there as a compass for the present and the future. If the British people refuse to use this compass because they don't believe it or it's too hard to confront and wish it went away because its uncomfortable, then you remain stagnant, and tendency to repeat the past will ever lurk I'm the shadows. The main reason why I personally, detest the British empire, isn't majorly for the atrocities it committed-afterall nobody is perfect- but because of the effort and desperation to deny it both politically and socially. Discussions like this, is what's needed.

I remember the first time my grandaughter actually seen a black child close up for the first time, I sat back to see what would unfold, this is what happened, my dog just had pups and my friend had visitors who were black and had told this wee boy, who got all excited as kids do and came to my house to see them, my grandaughter who was about 5 at the time slowly looked him up and down and took his hand and took him into the room to see the pups within a minute they were laughing and watching the pups in awe. It took me back to my own childhood, I was brought up in a small town, in this town there were a brother and sister who were classified as Halfcaste, horrible word, I never saw their mother or father but they both lived with their granny, that was as close to a black person as I got until I was 14 /15 and then American sailers came to town and I remember how scared I felt because I felt way out of my safety zone. My cousin married a black sailor and I remember my granny being so worried about how to talk to him because she never met black people to talk to them. I now have a deep feeling about how the black man felt when he first saw a white man, it is scary everything about the unknown is scary. People all over the world have the same fears about people they dont know but it changes when they meet. People need to make allowances for each other , the problem is cultural differences that brings in fear ,and the problems is people want their culture around them they want something that they feel safe in. Immigrants tend to congregate in one place and their children do not get to mix, and it is those children that need to reach out to each other, they are the future and they must be treated equally.

I respect and admire Akala but he's skirting around the issue of democracy and the EU or lack of.
Democracy is definitely being skirted around but, Akala is not doing that. He's highlighting areas of racism which plays a role in Brexit. As the empires faces break up and therefore resources being threatened by the break up. Britain and the other colonialist are having to consider their future.

I remember the first time my grandaughter actually seen a black child close up for the first time, I sat back to see what would unfold, this is what happened, my dog just had pups and my friend had visitors who were black and had told this wee boy, who got all excited as kids do and came to my house to see them, my grandaughter who was about 5 at the time slowly looked him up and down and took his hand and took him into the room to see the pups within a minute they were laughing and watching the pups in awe. It took me back to my own childhood, I was brought up in a small town, in this town there were a brother and sister who were classified as Halfcaste, horrible word, I never saw their mother or father but they both lived with their granny, that was as close to a black person as I got until I was 14 /15 and then American sailers came to town and I remember how scared I felt because I felt way out of my safety zone. My cousin married a black sailor and I remember my granny being so worried about how to talk to him because she never met black people to talk to them. I now have a deep feeling about how the black man felt when he first saw a white man, it is scary everything about the unknown is scary. People all over the world have the same fears about people they dont know but it changes when they meet. People need to make allowances for each other , the problem is cultural differences that brings in fear ,and the problems is people want their culture around them they want something that they feel safe in. Immigrants tend to congregate in one place and their children do not get to mix, and it is those children that need to reach out to each other, they are the future and they must be treated equally.
