I don't understand why some people still confuse a Tech Review- Rating with personal feelings towards the movie itself. You make it absolutely clear in each video that you're only rating the visual and audio quality of the review disc. In terms of the Last Jedi - I think that totally comes down to expectations an likes concerning video presentation. The film grain was definitely a visual effect they wanted so keeping it in the master seems logical. But I do understand that it doesn't offer the pristine quality most people are looking for on 4K UHD. So ranking the disc probably comes down to the question wether you only look at the effort to bring the original image as best on disc as possible or you are looking for that 4K UHD Wow-effect that al lot of movies shot with modern equipment offer.
AmazingSpidyman Well, this was a very polarizing movie, so it would make a very interesting research subject too see why people voted that way. People defending the movie, are like zealots, and would rate down any review that adds more criticism to it. Some people that hated the movie, are very passionate as well, and feel that these releases deserve to gather dust in the shelves of the stores. They would probably thumb down any video discussing Bluerays, etc just to let youtube know that they aren't interested in news about those releases. People in the middle would may have other reasons. I think research would be interesting because this case could be a microlab of how team politics work.
This again shows how passionate people are about Star Wars. And the thing is that it probably means something else for everyone. Star Wars is a popcultural phenomenon and has found its way into so many diverse media (movies, tv shows, comics, books, the music itself). And it lasted long enough to reach multiple generations of people coming in first contact with it in different ways. So there is no way a new installment can please everyone, simply because there are so many different expectations and hopes for more Star Wars.
Shane, congrats on the 5k. Good job and keep doing ur thing. You’re the youtuber I go to when it comes down to which 4k disc to buy on day one or wait for sale. Are you a big fan of steelbooks. Miss the days when 4k steelbooks were 29.99 not 34.99 lol.
You don’t have to explain yourself to these clowns. If the movie doesn’t look good, then it is what it is. I buy 4K so it looks better than Blu Ray. If that is the directors intent, then I’ll stick with the 1080p version.
Sadly, The Last Jedi follows a frustrating current trend, where the detail, contrast and colour is graded out of the image. The trailers looked like shit and the movie looked like shit in the cinema. There's no excuse for shitty Dolby Atmos in 2018 though. I miss the days of Dean Cundey, the cinematographer of movies like Temple of Doom and Big Trouble In Little China. They still look great.
Your Last Jedi review was honest. More power to you. I saw VUDU Dolby Vision and agree with you. Waiting on 4k disc. Keep up the great work. Your not a salesman for the man.
Hey Shane, how would you compare the picture quality/transfer of TLJ to that of Force Awakens in terms of color, contrast, sharpness, saturation, vividness, and film grain?
Thanks for the reply! You've got yourself a new subscriber. I loved TFA and especially TLJ so it's a day one purchase for me. I hope I enjoy the transfer. I'm curious to see how the 3D version looks. Keep up the good vids.
The film is not made to be watched 5 centimeters from the tv because it has lots of film grain but if you sit about 9 feet from the tv, it looks ok. They added film grain for some reason. Best you can do its get the 1080p version and upscale it to 4k. Looks better actually.
I'm So relieved I found this channel ,I bought this on the strength of the Blu Ray. Com review ! Spent 2 hours messing with my settings thinking something was broken with my setup ?Turns out it's intended to be a grey washed out mess !Everyone seems to agree in chat, so I'm not loosing my eyesight Thank God
So its not just me, The last Jedi is supposed to like that? I'm just getting into 4K, I thought I was doing something wrong as the picture quality is grainy, or has digital noise added to it to make it look like that.
When I saw Last Jedi in theaters it seemed to have a fog over the screen throughout the entire film. I think it was stylistic choice for the movie to look like this and not so much a bad transfer. Just my opinion though.
So in other words this 4K Blu-Ray is enough to make people say 'bring back George Lucas'. Lol Say what you want about the prequel trilogy, but at least he made those movies pop With vivid color, awesome sound, and some of the best damn fight scenes in Star Wars history
Thank you! Im not a tech buy but TLJ just visually felt off to me and the story just made it worse but Lucas explained why the fights where like this Luke should have been insanely power and astral projection was just a let down.
So I got an oled got the last Jedi in 4K. Pop it on… my jaw hit the floor, and not in a good way. As soon as the space scenes came up I thought there was something wrong with either the uhd or my oled. Space looked grey. So grey. Especially with the contrast with the solid black bars. Now I see it was intentional? Why??? So stupid.
Exactly the same for me ,I thought something was broken, or my settings were messed up !A Shockingly bad presentation, Grey and washed out !So relieved it's not just me
I can't wait to watch the 4K Blu ray. I think your review is very honest. Unlike many review sites, avsforum, bluray, and highdefdigest are all gave the video quality like 90s and above. Sometime, they are right. But like Planet Earth 2, they gave it max score. While I found it disappointing due to many mix low resolution shots from old footage and grey out black here and there. Last Jedi in dolby vision theater were grey out black too. I won't be surprise the 4k blu ray turns out like this.
Hello. I finally got it and watch it for 40 min and 10 min on blu ray. I am 100% agree with you on the review. I watched it on my samsung 65JS9500 full array tv with oppo 203. My 4k bluray experience is very similar with dolby theater. Space black is not pitch black. The resolution/detail is just a touch better on 4k than bluray. HDR color didn't offer much better color depth. Maybe even no highlight. But I found HDR offer a tiny little bit brighter picture. They look very similar. Bluray itself was good. 4K bluray is not reference quality. 7.5 or 7. It kinda remind me of Inception. Like you said, 4K and regular bluray. Am I watching the same shit? Once again, thank you for the review ahead of time. And the only review I disagree with you so far is "The Mummy" 1999. I found that one quality good but you didn't it as much.
I sense a Disney remaster rerelease for 'The Last Jedi' in the next couple of years.. I agree that there was hardly any brightness or 'pop' with the HDR on this release. Personally, I think it was intentional.
Disney did not want to pay for a truly 4k edition. Do to the controversy their was not an interest in putting more money in the movie. The unsaid fear of the Bluray and 4k editions not selling. To much cost at this point to give an enhanced version. They can put out all these versions for pennys was the cheaper plan. We will see when the discs come out in the US. Not a fan of this movie in how badly it was done. These are beloved characters and story. I do not what they will do for the next one???All they can do now is put lipstick on this Porg and sell it.😲😲😲
After watching a few of your reviews, and comparing to my personal UHD experiences, I think you are right on! I’m so glad your channel is here, as the only product I can compare 4k disc to is a video game, where quality can widely vary!
Not having a 4K display I only double dipped with the 3D Blu Ray and 4K due to the atmos mix....... gutted! Absolute muted shit and an embarrassment for the format. Thankfully the DTS mix saves the day on the other discs
You don’t have to do an hour unboxing. Simply hold or show the case in your hand while your reviewing it. Even for a second to prove you actually own the disc. Would you trust a review of a Sony Z9D if the reviewer didn’t show the actual tv(that they own it or have it)? Doubt it. Either way you know what’s up.
Just giving you a heads up of what’s being talked about on various forums. Figured since I was a subscriber I’d call you guys out. Look around if you want to read more.
The VUDU Dolby Vision is fine but I also have pre ordered the 4k steel book from Best Buy. The 4k disc should be the best quality. Bought the VUDU for my girlfriend.
Why does blu-ray.com always give 5 stars for mediocre video quality? I bought a couple of 4ks back in the day based on their review and was disappointed.
The movie looked awesome, not sure what your problem was. I think it's kinda funny you complain about how the movie looked, and yet you used a projector. Like of course it doesnt look good, projectors are terrible for picture quality especially consumer versions.
Oh yeah. I used to struggle with digital music from iTunes to get good sound quality until I started getting CD. Then it sound better with CD or FLAC. So is vinyl player. I'm an deaf but I love music and theater movie.
i think people don't hate you're review,s i think people hate the outcome, and lets face it thousands are all hoping for something special, me personally i was going to buy a top range 4K player with the release of the last jedi, but now I'm not so sure :(

This last JEDI 4K is the biggest disappointment since my son.
That's harsh. LMAO.
😂
Wow

It just was a dull looking movie. But hey, I'm sure many will still love it for that.

I'm not a huge collector. I would normally rip my discs to a nas drive and store the disc away. You know kaleidascape style.

Adam Rodriguez was the vudu one good? I don't known if I should cancel my pre order and just go digital.
I’m glad I watched this , I thought it was just me that felt this way , good video bro
Hey Shane, how would you compare the picture quality/transfer of TLJ to that of Force Awakens in terms of color, contrast, sharpness, saturation, vividness, and film grain?
Awakens is a better looking movie.

Good honest review. I felt the same about Thor ragnarok. Why have ATMOS and not actually have any overhead sound?
I know it blows.
Keep up the good job Shane! :)
Thanks!
Would it make a difference if you actually use the physical 4k disc than the digital over the air internet?
The disc will have a higher quality image and better sound.
The film is not made to be watched 5 centimeters from the tv because it has lots of film grain but if you sit about 9 feet from the tv, it looks ok. They added film grain for some reason.
Best you can do its get the 1080p version and upscale it to 4k. Looks better actually.
You got it right, don’t listen to the haters. The tech results was disappointing.
Do you think this is the one exception to use dynamic contrast on 4K HDR film? I got the last jedi film and man this blows the hdr sucks.
It wouldn't hurt.
I'm So relieved I found this channel ,I bought this on the strength of the Blu Ray. Com review ! Doris Duck even the audio sucked

Never said it was bad. Just an ugly film.

You were bang on the money with the last jedi ...
I take it you're seen it.
I can't wait to watch the 4K Blu ray. I think your review is very honest. Unlike many review sites, avsforum, bluray, and highdefdigest are all gave the video quality like 90s and above. I'm sure they'll be a dozen more releases for this and the others too. That's the star wars way.
i agree with you 100% !!
the audio and picture quality on the disc wasn't as good as seeing it in imax 2d at the local cinema. Hopefully episode ix is better.
Disney did not want to pay for a truly 4k edition. Do to the controversy their was not an interest in putting more money in the movie. The unsaid fear of the Bluray and 4k editions not selling. Maybe Disney intentionally botched this release because their planning a extended 4k version with a better pq hdr
U should show box though! Maybe not full unboxing. Front/back.
Hit us up on Instagram or twitter. Product shots galore. 😁
Guardians of the galaxy 2 , is phenomenal on 4K hdr , I agree last Jedi I could hardly see a difference from HDX to UHD with HDR
Not having a 4K display I only double dipped with the 3D Blu Ray and 4K due to the atmos mix....... gutted! Absolute muted shit and an embarrassment for the format. Thankfully the DTS mix saves the day on the other discs
i dont understand why the bluray disc looks good but the 4k looks so grey and foggy. like grey filtered
Congrats on 5k Subs :D
Thanks!

How come we can't get movies in 4k 3d...
It doesn't exist yet.
The VUDU Dolby Vision is fine but I also have pre ordered the 4k steel book from Best Buy. The 4k disc should be the best quality. Bought the VUDU for my girlfriend.
Let us know what you think when you get it.
I agree the 4K disc was really disappointing
Then y release the last Jedi on 4k if thay wanted it look muted what was the point
You know how artists are. They're finicky folks. I sometimes put grain and noise in these short videos cause I think it looks cool 😉
For something called money.
mrbrainchild76 agreed
Why does blu-ray.com always give 5 stars for mediocre video quality? I bought a couple of 4ks back in the day based on their review and was disappointed.
You may risk not getting anymore freebies for giving bad reviews. But who knows.
I sure hope they knock it outta the park with the 4K UHD for Infinity War to make up for The Crap Jedi UHD
Hdr is basically non existent on Jedi
Sadly it's true.
They should have at least made it look like Blade Runner 2049
I start hating the resident evil movies after the first one.
U gave it a 7.5!?? Out of 100?
Have you seen any of my reviews at all???
The movie looked awesome, not sure what your problem was. I think it's kinda funny you complain about how the movie looked, and yet you used a projector. Like of course it doesnt look good, projectors are terrible for picture quality especially consumer versions.
You right. My projector is trash. I should rethink my whole outlook.
Lol get em Shane.
Ya Star Wars wasn't that great. It's crazy they used ARRI cameras for such a drab look
I have rather to buying 4K blu ray than getting digital one, ever if it is cheaper to get digital. Itunes 20 mbps and blu ray 70 mbps, just my guess.
Physical is always better.
Oh yeah. I used to struggle with digital music from iTunes to get good sound quality until I started getting CD. Then it sound better with CD or FLAC. So is vinyl player. I'm an deaf but I love music and theater movie.
I agree picture looks awful I was surprised
☝️ one of the worst 4k transfers ever.shocking.🤔🤔
Film was awful in my opinion huge disappointment glad I cancelled my pre order for the 4k uhd Blu-ray
i think people don't hate you're review,s i think people hate the outcome, and lets face it thousands are all hoping for something special, me personally i was going to buy a top range 4K player with the release of the last jedi, but now I'm not so sure :(
We'll buy it anyways. The next disc you buy I'm positive will look better then this one. 😉
just off to pick up the Sony UBPX700B, ok so mid range :) and a copy of Bladerunner 2049
How Dare you guys give a Star Wars movie a bad review. I suspect Sal and Tony will be knocking on your door to break some knee’s soon.. haha😉.
Disney has deep pockets and influence. Certain “reviewers” fear Disney retribution and lack of access.
Well we ruined our chances of freebies on this one.
