Just seeing this video and I have to say, if you're wanting to not eat the mic then you don't need a broadcast dynamic mic. Those are made to be mic'd close. That's the whole point. If you don't want to have a mic close then use a shotgun mic or a condenser mic. Not saying they weren't be dishonest, but when you say the podcast broadcast voice is going away, it's not. That's how you get the best sound out of those style mics.

I appreciate the follow-up here. The mic sounds much better in this video and is, based on the other videos I've seen, a much better representation of what it's like, for better or worse. I do have a couple thoughts, though, coming from a musical and audio nerd background.
    1) You say the EQ curves others have used are very aggressive and visually they do look like it, but I think it's important to consider scale, by which I mean look at the left of the graph. It's got -3, -6, and -9, whereas the first line in, say, ReaEQ in Reaper is -6 and then it goes to -12. That has tripped me up when switching DAWs and adjusting by eye instead of by numbers. So I'll still agree that Naaackers has some aggressive cuts at around -6 dB, but these could also be normal for him if he's trying to cut particular nasal frequencies in his voice that he doesn't like (but then again, maybe they are bad frequencies for the mic). I do that all the time. The others mostly kept everything to +/- 3 dB or less, which isn't really that much. Frankly, the SM7b needs at least that much of a boost on the high end.
    2) Regarding proximity effect, remember that this is a dynamic mic. Nearly every mic like it, including the SM7b, SM57, SM58, MV7, etc requires you to be right up on it. That's just the nature of this kind of mic and that's what they are designed for. The potential exceptions are the RE20 and its kin, as you mentioned, but even then, you still really shouldn't be much farther than a few inches away from it. If you don't want to be that close to it, you really need to use a condenser (though I, and I think you, don't think that's the best choice for streamers).
    3) Regarding compression, when you "turn down" your threshold, you're increasing compression. That is, you're making it kick in at lower volumes than it would, hence the sound becomes more compressed (so turning it down is more like turning it up). This was the main problem I had with your original video, there was just an absurd amount of compression. I know you said it sounded bad in the monitor and I'll address that in a second, but it's much better to keep your gain reduction at the target -3 dB or so and not worry so much about the actual number for the threshold.
    4) It's possible the headphone output on the mic just isn't that great. You mentioned a few times that when you cranked things up, they sounded really bad. I don't think they sound bad in the recording, though, so my suspicion is that it's just not a great headphone amp. I hope someone like Julian Krausse gets one to analyze, I'd love to see his thoughts on the DAC and headphone amp.
None of this is to say that your thoughts/opinions aren't valid or that the mic doesn't need work or that I don't appreciate all the effort you put into this. It's also not to say that there aren't valid criticisms of the mic, like that EMI is pretty unacceptable and if the headphone amp really is bad, that sucks. I just think it's important to understand what can reasonably be expected out of the mic.

    • @EposVox
      @EposVox  2 года назад +2

      Appreciate the comment
1-that was my point of confusion, though. Anyone trying to explain away the sound as my fault kept saying I was too aggressive with my cutting, yet everyone else was more extreme with it
2-yes, but the SM7b for example gets a nice *benefit* from proximity effect to get a radio sound, but does not *need* it. It sounds perfectly natural (for a dynamic) without it. This is the case for MANY dynamic mics. IMO this mic NEEDS proximity to be usable.
3-but as I explained I had a higher threshold and thus “less compression” in the original video so that doesn’t make sense. This video has more compression than the review.
4-the “turning it up and it sounds worse” applies when routing to my studio monitors and other headphone outputs too, though

Honestly I think your largest issue creating most of this backlash was your title starting with "GAME OVER for USB microphones?" overhyped it. So when they hear it and it sounds at best comparable to a blue yeti in that video... people felt clickbaited and/or EXTREMELY let down.
Though I gotta say I love the DBZ and Bill Nye references in the video those were so freaking great. I hope you do more stuff like that, even though I'm sure it's a lot of work, and a bit of risk at some unwarranted copyright claims.

honestly... i'm really terrible at audio, and thought the mic sounded great in your first video, both raw and compressed, and think it sounds great here, raw and compressed. if you're buying a USB microphone, you're probably just doing streaming or youtube videos. as long as you position yourself and the mic the way you like, and eq it even just a little bit, any livestream will sound perfectly fine. especially when most people just watch on phone or laptop speakers.

For what it's worth the original review is the first video of yours I watched, like an hour ago, and I was blown away by the quality and subbed, and now I see this update and I'm just like damn, this is a good channel. I'm in the market to buy my first streaming mic immediately and I got pretty hyped by what other people were saying about the beacn but I know I won't stay in this proximity range consistently so now I'm leaning towards the el gato wave 3. My only concern with that one is keyboard noise. I definitely don't want the added expense of a mixer right now, though. I could rationalize the 280 price of this but that's as high as I'll go right now.

You sound much better in this video but it’s still sounds closer to a 100/150$ dynamic mic I just don’t think it’s worth the extra for the software. If I’m spending 280$ I want something that punches with that price point out of the box not after a bunch of processing. I agree the 500hz broadcast names is odd for most people that area is going to add boxy boomy muddyness. but I do feel a lot of people problems is most of the videos I’ve heard people sound muffled and not good for the price point but then everyone’s title is some form of hype, best, endgame mic etc. I suppose coming off the back of the goxlr there is a lot of hype surrounding beacn and I’m sure they will get there the idea behind all there products are great but there price to performance for these 3 new products are a little off.

I don't really see who this microphone is for at this price point. It's far too complicated for beginners looking for a simple USB microphone, and for people who know what they're doing, they'd be better served with any number of cheaper combo's of xlr mics and interfaces. You certainly don't need a 300 dollar XLR mic to compare it to when a 20 dollar behringer sm58 clone sounds way better with a minor EQ tweak. It certainly looks nice on your desk, which for streamers can be a big selling point I guess.
The software seems really promising though, hopefully they make an Wave XLR type competitor to go along with their other products.

What they call "Broadcast" is where the boxy area of your voice (500hz) hits where I generally have to cut out for my Voice on my NT1-A, in the Steelseries Sonar app I use when I use the broadcast high preset they cut the boxy part down by 3db and raise the sub-bass up by 3db so idk what the BEACN are smoking because raising the 500 range just makes everything sound harsh if I wanted a broadcast mic honesty I would just buy one because trying to emulate it is time-consuming rather than paying extra money for like an SM7B.

It's a great software suite, but the mic does sound unbelievably flat in your vids.
The reason you're liking it is (probably) because you have your headphone monitoring feed loud.
Turning my volume up to semi-uncomfortable levels makes your voice sound really good with this mic, but if listened on "normal" volume, which I usually consume content(except for music) on, it's really muffled. Dunno if it's some sort of youtube compressing audio trick or whatever else that could be. I may also be completely mistaken - just my 5 cents really.

Then they mentioned that it would just be something I would have to get use to. Have you had this issue with this particular USB mic? Never had any issues with my Audio Technica XLR as there was zero latency. I just need to hear a slight mic monitoring for it to sound more naturally speaking. Frequency wise i thought it was fine, but i was only watching with my phone speakers, so that's probably why all i noticed was the compression. But speaking of the software for a second: i hate it so much, that none of these tools exist as standalone programms and always require a specific microphone. That annoyed the hell out of me with the wave software too. And the argument that "it requires the processing power built in the microphone to work" is complete bs. The amount of processing that those tiny soc's inside of a mic can handle doesn't come close to what moden pc processors can put out. They should just be honest and say it's to maximize profit instead of coming up with these nonsensical excuses...

that's not... what? no. "High-pass" means it lets high frequencies through and cuts off low frequencies. Also known as a "bass roll-off" filter.

Sorry, a mic that needs this much processing is simply not that deserving of your praise. I do appreciate the value of the whole kit, and it does seem to solve a lot of issues, but the mic? No. To me, you sound like you're under a blanket and I'm listening from another room.

I love that everyone has wildly different and contradicting descriptions about the sound of this mic.

Ok its a sponsored product, got it. But man 280 dls, it's not worth at all.
Focus 3gen solo + podmic + psa1+ windscreen = 300 its not very competitive at that price.

"it's a sponsored product" uhhh no? The fuck? I take sponsorship disclosure very seriously and have never once in my career hid when someone is sponsoring me. I literally concluded my review by ranking it second-to-last out of the mics I compared it to and concluded the sound quality for the price was not worth it.
      You okay over there?

but the podmic does simply not sound good. Still I'm not a fan of the Beacn Mic.
