  • Owen Farrell has decided to take some time away from International playing duties for England. Farrell has decided to stand down during the 2024 Six Nations competition to take some time to improve his and his families situation around mental health.
With mental health being such a huge topic in society and sport these days I take some time in this episode to look at Farrells case, and I also ask some of the questions that need to be asked around what are we doing to make rugby, sport, and life in general better for those who are being impacted in these negative ways.
Owen Farrell is a superstar rugby player and whether you like him or not for the way in which he plays the game, his mental wellbeing is as important as yours and mine.
More needs to be done and in this show I talk about the what and the how.

Thank you for this broadcast, Mark. Many other channels have already spoken in Owen’s defence but you have drilled further into the topic. Maximum respect to you from a passionate rugby follower.

I myself have not been an Owen Farrell fan. However, he obviously cares about his own ability to perform under pressure for England. And he cares about England's success. I salute him for this decision. I myself have had my fair share of mental health challenges. Get well Owen 👊👊👊👊

Rhys Priestland went through this, but it was even worse for him because it was only from a bunch of bastards from his own country that were on his back all the time, Welsh ‘supporters’ booed him when he came on the pitch to give his all for his country in Cardiff, absolute disgrace, the bloody lot of them.

These keyboard warriors needs to be brought to book!!! They are cowards who would not say these things face to face. I'm not a Farrel fan but these abuse is absolutely uncalled for, they are just humans playing the game as best they can, they will make mistakes

Farrell gets more abuse from England fans than he does from fans of any other country, I have no idea why he cops so much flack, he’s a proven competitor, a Lion, solid as a rock.

Hi Mark, I agree with you 100 % on the abuse of players and refs and coaches BUT if 1; You play at the highest level you should expect that-right or wrong and 2; If you keep on acting like Owen on the field you will get some backlash from the opposite team and their supporters and your own supporters. I like you channel- keep it up. My 2 cents…

Thanks for sharing your 2 cents worth. I understand that professional sports people receive undue attention because of what they do, but surely the mark has been overstepped when wife's and kids are being actively targeted, no body signs up for that, nor should have to deal with it, after all, this is sport.

Mark I am sorry to say that Owen also needs accept responsibility. As far as I know he has a reputation of injuring other players and getting away with it. In other words he helped create the situation. I think he is quite capable fixing his side. He gained my respect after losing the semi final he sincerely congratulated the Springbok players. He is quite capable of making England a strong team again!. Mike

If he gets away with it, it isn’t his fault, it’s the fault of the authorities, when he put Basham off, it wasn’t his fault that the disciplinary committee had no bottle. Yes he should be punished when he commits foul play, maybe his tackling technique would improve if the authorities had any balls and gave him an appropriate ban.

@michaelmansvelt9843 thank you for your sharing. How would you feel if Owen was your son, and his family was receiving this abuse and hatred ?

@@insiderugbywithmark Mark, he has only himself to blame for this situation, dew to his own actions within the the sport.

@@insiderugbywithmark One word SAD! But I would also ask myself if I contributed to making him the person he has become. Owen is a man and he must decide who he wants to be. As a father I should not interfere. I would however ask to consider apologising to those players he injured and those he does injure in future games. He would then have chosen to be a different person. Someone he could be proud to be. Also a person his family will be proud of. There will unfortunately be nutcases who still continue with abuse and hatred.
I could see he was not the Owen Farrell we normally see. As a young boy I used to kill small birds with my catapult. I was very successful. One day my father said to me “ Michael you can kill birds but you cannot give life.” I thought about what he and have never killed another bird or animal. I wish Owen well. Mike

You make your own bed. Actions seem to have consequences over the years. He can redeem his reputation, but it takes more than a good game in a final after years of building a bad reputation. He gets flack from the public for years of bad tackling technique. Him now being sad about it doesn’t make the bad reputation unjustified.

You talk about his bad reputation in the eyes of some fans and for Farrell needing to redeem it.
As Mark said in the content, how valid is criticism of his reputation by people who don't know him, watch him play regularly and are judging him using their emotional feeling of him rather than Amy factual basis.
Taking aside the way some fans view him and consider how differently and positively the fellow players community around the world speak of him. Then you get a different view on his character from those who actually know him.
Yes sometimes you have to lay in your own bed and I think in this case this was never about Farrell playing rugby or tackling. No factual evidence or stats are provided for his bad tackle vs successful tackle rate .

Shame, he physically injured other players with his tackle technique and refused to adjust. Now he has withdrawn because his feelings are hurt by criticism.
Let him learn how to tackle safely, then help him back from his mental condition.

When I think of Farrel, all his skill and determination is sadly overshadowed by his consistant demonstrations of "shithousery".
