I am an 80 year old lady. I have just bought a Bodhran. I appreciated your first lesson. I look forward to joining you for the next, when I have mastered the first lesson.Thank you.
So I'm an Irish guy in Canada and recently got the irish music bug when I went home on vacation. My nephew is playing the Irish Tenor Banjo..so I'm learning the bodhran for the fun of it so we can play some tunes when he comes to visit next summer. Great tutorials - I've been practising your Jig rhythm (D DUDU) for the past week and can play along with a few jigs on RUclips now. Now I'm going to see if I can learn more rhythms by following this 7 rhythms series - Thanks for all the lessons!
Just arriving home from two glorious weeks in Ireland.....I bought a bodhran drum...an instrument I've always wanted to learn to play. The drum came with a dvd but I've found your tutorial so much easier to understand. Thanks so much for sharing your wonderful talent..... may I just come CLOSE to sounding this great I'd be a happy bodhran player!! Ronnie
I have been drumming for some 40 yrs now, and made a career from playing, teaching and making and refurbishing drums. As I age, I have come to appreciate my cultural heritage more and more. This series is a great intro to the bodhran, and with a St. Patrick's Day gig looming, your instructions should set me up nicely. Thank You so much!
Amazing!! I bought my wife a Bodhran a couple of years ago for Xmas and she has enjoyed 'playing' but hasn't progressed. She was having a problem holding it the way the book said and ended up hitting her boob!!! I suggested checking out RUclips to see how other ladies played the Bodhran, and found you. Her face lit up, and she loves your video's. Problem is that I don't see her much, now!! Thanks for providing such inspiration to her, with clear, concise, digestible teaching techniques, xx
Thanks so much for these lessons! As a raw beginner at 67, I love the ability to keep replaying and to play along with you. Great contribution to learning...thank you.
Thanks Michelle for this very clear description of how to play the bodhran. I am in Scotland and have had a drum for many years but just played it my own way. Last year I was inflicted with an impacted wrist fracture which left me with limited movement and strength in the wrist. I have decided to try to start playing again but with instruction this time around and found your videos here. Nice and clear compared to others. Thank you and best wishes for your future years.
I just received my Bodhran from Ampersound Music in Saranac Lake, NY. When I asked Marc about its care he referred me to Michelle Stewart. I followed her directions for treating the skin and I'm happy with the results. Ithen took Michelle's first rythm class and found it simple to follow. I look forward to all of the lessons in the series and hope that I will learn enough to be able to join in play at open music groups here.
I just got my first bodhran while traveling in the outer hebrides, and i was nervous about trying to learn it after watching several expert players at the heb celt festival this summer. you were the first lesson I watched online, and I was thrilled to see that rhythm #1 was my favorite guitar strumming rhythm, so it felt comfortable and understandable. Thanks for making these available!
Loving the lessons, Michelle! Only started playing bodhran a couple of weeks ago and have been following your tutorials. Already, I'm more comfortable with using the tipper and maintaining a steady rhythm. I'm loving the progress I'm making and feel I'm beginning to make recognisable musical noises now. I like the way you break the lesson down into bite size pieces but also give us something to aim for. Thank you so much.
I just got my drum today and I'm excited to get started in this new venture. I found your instructional video to be very helpful for a very very early beginner I'm looking forward to my other lessons thank you
Thank you for the very clear instruction! I am a music teacher (and occasionally a fiddler) at a school in London, and I also run a little after-school club for fiddling. I recently bought a bodhran to add a new sound to the club. So, you get a fellow music teacher's stamp of approval! Well done & keep up the good work!
This is the best rhythm you ever taught me... I probably use this as my base for most of the reels I play, just filled in. If I'm ever stuck for something to play, something based on this usually comes out of the hat. Thank you for this, and all the wonderful advice. Without your wonderful, charitable videos, I would still be bashing my tipper on a goat skin. Cheers.
Excellent tutorial. I just bought my first Bodhran drum and am so looking forward to playing it. Thanks Michelle Stewart for making these RUclips videos.
excellent thank you - I just decided that I might like to try playing a bodhran after half a lifetime of being a non musician. Yours was the first video to pop up on YT and you have inspired me.
I love this video! Just got a bodhran and am so excited to learn how to play it. I've learned the absolute basics but this is just the sort of thing I need! Thank you!
This is brilliant. My husband bought me a Bodhran for my birthday (which isn't till July) so I can practice and be able to play it on my birthday!!! I watched some youtube lessons and it was so difficult!!!! But this is so lovely and uncomplicated. Thank you!!!
Hi Michelle, I started with these lessons of yours yesterday - so have done two now. Today a had a peak at what is coming, so thought I'd respond to the request you sent out to those who have had a bodhran for a while sitting on the shelf. Well, I'd be one of those I think I bought the bodhran some 3 years ago, and all kinds of tutorials etc, and ended up only watching the tutorials Well I can conform that your rhythms are the first I have ever played, and yesterday was the first time I have actually taken a tipper to the bodhran So today I can, for the most part, stick to the first two rhythms you have demonstrated (for a short time) ... it will take quite a while before I can do that with any pace mind, but thanks to you and your tutorials I now actually have some hope of getting there eventually Thanks so much for putting yourself out to teach us some of your skills Regards Malcolm
Malcolm, you just totally made my day. Thank you so much for taking the time to leave me such a wonderful comment. You have no idea how much it means to me to have people actually be inspired enough to finally get that drum out of its case. You, and people just like you, are the reason I made these videos in the first place. You are so welcome. Drum On my friend, Michelle.
I just bought a bodhran today, I loved the sound as soon as I heard it!. I would like to know, what goes on with the other hand? The guy that sold me the drum was holding the cross bar in the back, standing as he played. I see now that it is played sitting down traditionally.Your videos are such a great bonus!
I want to thank you for posintg these lessons. I am learning to play to honor my brother. The story is too long, but just know that my heart is in it, and I appreciate that you are taking me there. Step by step.
I have watched almost all of the other instuctional videos for the Bodhran and bar none, yours are the best. I like your style and how you explain everything and also how you slow it down and really let me see the strokes. This really helps. You make it look so easy, but for me, it's not~! You are very encouraging too. Thanks Michelle.!
My wife loves the videos and the repetition are key for her. She's having a ball going through each video and subscribed to your videos. Will dig down into the rest of them every day. Many thanks, Arvel Bird
Im from Chile, but i loved celt music and particularly the bodhran from the first time I heard it, thanks Michelle for the lessons, I have enjoyed them so much.
Wonderful....I will be getting my first Bodhran for Christmas but I was practicing with yo on my glass computer table and I can hardly wait to play it! Thanks so much for sharing.
Thanks so much Michelle, any help is a great help, got my 1st Rhythm now from your video here so onwards and upwards from here on in. I shall be checking out your other videos to keep my progression moving forward. Keep up the good work in teaching us beginners to having great fun while playing the Bodhran ;) Mick
Cheers for the video down load, I CAN UNDERSTAND YOUR VIDEO, alot better then the one that came with my Bodhran you make it look so easy. Thanks a million
Thank you very much for your first lesson, with your help I hope to learn to play Bodhran the way it is supposed to be. Waiting for more of your lessons.
Hi Again, Would it be possible to see you play this pattern to music so that we can get an idea of what we are trying to achieve - the finished product!! Many thanks,
Thanks for doing this, Michelle. Just bought my bodhran, trying to get the hang of it. Drove past Celtic College 10 years ago -- had no idea of what I was missing.
thanks so much, I have looked at a few video's and yours is by far the best for me. Nicely breaking down the technique for me to practice, in straightforward bite size pieces.
hi Michelle i love your videos and its graet learning new beats I've been playing the bodhran for nearly a year now and im learning the new beats easy enough but im having trouble playing along to music while maintaining the different beats. i think it would really help if you could show us the beats while playing along to music. Hopefully i'll just get it with practice and thanks again your videos are brilliant.
Thank you SO much for these videos. I love my bodhran. I've had it for less than a week, and I'm totally addicted to it. you've made it so easy to learn rhythms. Did I mention - thank you!!
Hi Paul F, I really appreciate you taking the time to say so. I am so happy for your wife and her love affair with the bodhran : ) She's very lucky to have such a supportive spouse.
This is exactly what I was looking for the get started. I was have the same experience...every time I would get playing along with other I would revert to the same pattern. I am try to get into you Family class at the collage this summer...having trouble with the site...may have to call.....looking forward to meeting you.
It was so great to finally get to meet you in person and have you my the class at the Gaelic College, Karen. You made excellent progress while you were there. Keep it up and Drum On! ~ Michelle ps. Thank you very much for the lovely card and gift you left for me.
Thanks Michelle, you teach very clearly and patiently, it makes it easy! I feel encouraged because I can do what you've taught here (got my bodhran last week!) I think I should buy a metronome ...
Chère Michelle, merci pour ce tutoriel qui me permet de travailler et progresser. Avez-vous une version en langue Française ? Cela me permettrait de mieux saisir vos judicieux conseils. Un grand Bravo !!!
Great videos, better than any I have bought! I'm a complete beginner, and am learning through your videos. I feel confident playing to tunes on youtube, but reckon I'd be lost if I sat down in an actual session!!!
Thank you so much, got 2 years ago a bodhran Walton here in Mexico, didn't know how to play it your way and used it together with my other drums, for shaman rituals... it served well till I remembered that I also got the tipper, hahaha! Now I'm learning your way... How do I get to part 2 of Day one? What do I do with the left hand, under the cross??? Pls, advise.
@iccubis You are an inspiration to my wife. She's only been practicing a week and she's got a great jig and reel feel with some alternative strokes. In addition to the hour-long practice sessions, she's going through Michelle's 7 Rhythms in 7 Days videos As a fiddler and Native American flute player, I would love to have her play at some of my solo gigs. It would add alot and she's a musician anyway, just a beginner on the bodhran, so I'm sure they'll say the same about her in 6 months!
Ok I am back again! I have moved, started a new position with my employer, and started on online course. I now have some time to practice again. I think starting from the beginning is gong to be good as I think I am a bit rusty. New tipper doesn't have the same effect for the tripelettes. So glad these videos are still available. Any tips!
Thank you so much for these videos -*exactly* what I was needing and looking for. Just starting Bodhran and needed this kind of patient and easy introduction.
Very good explaination of the rhythm, but it would really help to eventually put it to music. I would like to hear what type of tune this rhythm would go with.
78yrs of age and taking up Bodhran, love the way you make it look so easy. I will keep practicing, thank you.
I am an 80 year old lady. I have just bought a Bodhran. I appreciated your first lesson. I look forward to joining you for the next, when I have mastered the first lesson.Thank you.
thank you so much for these lessons !! I'm french and here, in my little town, nobody can teach me how to play bodhran .. nobody but you !!!
