You are such a great teacher! I love how you're smiling and enjoying yourself as if this is the first time you had achieved the skill you are teaching, even though it's not! Your love for the instrument and techniques really shows.
You prolly dont give a shit but does anybody know of a tool to log back into an Instagram account? I was stupid forgot my login password. I would appreciate any tricks you can give me!
@Rowen Kane Thanks so much for your reply. I got to the site thru google and im in the hacking process now. I see it takes a while so I will get back to you later when my account password hopefully is recovered.
Bonjour Nicolle. Bien cordialement Philippe
Hey, that pinching-but-not-flat idea for the pop tone really worked me. I thought "I already know how to play a pop tone!" but this sounded instantly better and more comfortable. And finally a great explanation of the slight hand changes between accented (bass) and non-accented notes. Thank you so much!
Whow, i'm a Irishman born in Italy, i like all the Irish word and now i buy a bodhran for can play in the Italian Celtic festival, but i don't know play it... Thank you for the your precious lesson. you are so good at doing this, you can see and feel that you do it with your heart
Bought myself a Bodhran, after searching for some lessons and tips and tricks, I stumbled upon this video. By far the best lesson on YT! Very clear, very well explained and filmed, thank you so much :-) At slow tempo all works well for me, at higher tempo it becomes sloppy. But that's practice, it'll come :-)
Thank you for your detail in describing the basics of hand positions, holding the drum and tipper, etc. As a total novice I love the way you ease into the steps and encourage beginners. You also entice us to stick with it by giving glimpses of what's to come. Thanks so much for your help.
Thank you so much Tim! I teach private lessons via Skype if you're interested. This way I can help you personally with your grooves and goals and answer question you may have!
Happy days Nicolle. I understand the techniques on creating the different pitches relating to the different rhythm patterns much better now, so thank you for that. Very well explained. It's only a pity that my actual playing still sucks. It has to be said that you have one of the most perfectly radiant smiles I have ever seen which makes me excited to learn. If only my shocking ability matches my enthusiasm, I'm sure that I'd be truly awesome!
When listening to Irish music, I sometimes would prefer that this drum to be louder. I enjoy the primal sound of drum and it gets lost in the other instruments sound.
Wow! I just picked up my Bodhran today, and I find you are an excellent teacher. It reminds me much of being in a private lesson - where you and I play together at the same time. I have an excellent visual for technique and sound, and I find it comes so smoothly to watch you. I enjoy that you don't talk too much - and we dive right into the work. I've watched several of your videos and I love it so much! Thank you!! You can imagine - I am playing right along with you, exactly as you intended! :) Thank you again!
I'm so bummed I missed getting lessons from you in Austin. I've been playing a couple years now, and still enjoy your "beginner" videos -- great refreshers and motivation!
My bodhran has a cross at the back so its very hard to do the top pop. I'm new to playing this instrument but enjoying your videos. I am practicing every day. You are such a talented woman its a pleasure watching you and learning from you.
What a beautiful smile! She is beautiful and what a great teacher. I'll never play that instrument but it's so informative and satisfying to listen to her teaching, she makes me feel like I could do it. Bet ya ain't that easy hehe.
You can do it!! Let me know if you're interested in private lessons. I teach via Skype. This way I can help you personally with your grooves and goals and answer question you may have!
Just listsned to this , on the banks of Loch Ness where I live. What you just played, talked to the ancient tribesmen that I am.You had me jiggin all around the kitchen in ma wee stone hoose.
Hi Nicolle. Great videos!!!. Do you could made a video about how do you can put single ended triplets and rolls in reel time, please? Thank you very much 😊
I really like the way you hold your tipper using a neutral wrist. I worry that I’ll get carpal tunnel syndrome using bent wrist technique, but the pen style grip doesn’t seem to work for me with a straight wrist. I’m going to try your grip instead. Thanks!
Love it - any chance you could show a clip side on of you playing 'bass/pop' at about 11 minutes, but side on so can see the face of the drum? Id like to see where you are hitting the skin but its hard to see where you are getting the 2 different sounds from -front on it doesn't look like there is much distance between the two locations, but on my drum I have to move about 6 inches and right on to the very edge to get anything like the pop. Anywho - very good - great lessons :)
Yet again another great tutorial video here, I have been very lazy over 2 yrs when it comes to Bodhran practice, but now I've discovered you I've made a pact that I will do 15mins a day but it ends up being 30mins no problem n that's down to ur teaching skills. You have an Irish accent in there somewhere? Are u Irish n moved abroad? Or the other way round? Do u play in a band by anychance? Sorry for all the questions btw I'm just curious 🥁🇨🇮🍻🥁
fantastic lessons! Thank you so much. I have a traditional Bodhran that has cross sticks on the back of the drum making it difficult to hold as instructed. Can these be removed? Any comments or advice for me?
Do you have a recommended tipper for beginners? It seems like most teachers and professionals on RUclips play with a tipper that has a bunch of sticks tied together at the end not a solid end. The two that I got with my bodhrán both just have solid round ends.
You dont you put your hand flat? Just curious because the way i learned an almost flat hand in the bass sound, no hand but touching just the body is the open sound and hitting in between the index and thumb is the pop
Could you make a tutorial on how to make a cheap bodhran sounds good? I'm borrowing a cheap drum from a friend to learn on and I can't play it open like you because it sounds almost like I'm banging on a pot, it's so tinny. How do we adjust to play cheaper drums? Thanks!
Hi Dennis, Do you mean on the drum or the tipper? The tipper is drummer's grip tape. It helps me hold the tipper better. The tape on the drum is to help with the vibrations/overall sound. Yes, it most definitely changes the sound - makes it warmer and more controlled.
This video really confused me, the tone of my drum was really similar in the first video but in this video your drums sounds much wetter with alot of attack and deeper. Is this because of size? I'm using a 15inch drum.
Hi Tek P, which first video do you mean (so I can double check)? My drum is tuneable so perhaps I tuned it higher/lower. The environment (room temperature, weather, sweat) will change the tone of the drum. Comparing to a guitar, fiddle, etc tuning a bodhrán won't be exact every time. It's more of a preference and, for me, the tune I'm accompanying.
Hi Colin, it depends on your preference. Just make sure is not completely loose and the skin looses all tension. You can find this if the sound is dead and the skin is floppy. Hope it helps!
Personally I think it is possible and awesome! I've played along with Indian, Spanish, African, jazz, pop, and bluegrass bands and I absolutely loved it!
@@rathorrath401 Woohoo!! I'm so happy for you!! I've actually just uploaded a video on bodhrán placement tips, if you would like to check it out. I hope it helps and I hope you make awesome music with your new drum!
Thats realy cool. Just wondering the exact make of your bodhran as im trying to choose which one to buy off zee German...🤔🤔 Ps keep up the good work Nicolle... p1kk45 Hello, thank you for your comment. I actually made a video on what drum I play with all the information. There are also links you can follow. I hope that helps! Thank you also for your kind message. I love learning from different players because I keep expanding my knowledge and abilities. Keep up the good work!
why would that make you angry? she's probably put in countless hours of practice. many people don't consider all the hard work that goes into doing something well. but if you truly enjoy what you're doing, it doesn't seem like work at all. maybe drums just aren't your thing? that's okay, there are loads of different instruments out there.
How's your playing been? The main thing to focus on is this is part of a lesson and it guides you along and shows you how to practice. Just keep doing it slowly until it keeps a steady tempo.

arrggggg!! Speed and I scratch, scratch. Does that get with practice? Feels like a tongue twister in my hand.
When did you start to listen to Irish music

Hi , can I ask how you would describe what tension your bodhran is. Many thanks Colin
Hi Colin, it depends on your preference. Just make sure is not completely loose and the skin looses all tension. You can find this if the sound is dead and the skin is floppy. Hope it helps!
Thanks. I take it if it’s to tight it will cause playing problem’s as well. Thanks again Colin
when you play the high tone is the stick hitting above or below tonal hand??
Hi Paul,
I do it above!
Hello, can i know what beater did you used in the video? :)
Hello Pamela,
Here is a video showing that tipper. Start on minute 9:38. Hope it helps!
