    Hi Michelle. Just rediscovered you. I bought a beautiful bodhran, made from hoop pine & kangaroo hide last year and love playing it. In Australia it is our long summer break so I finally have time to learn some new rhythms. Thanks for your great videos. Very helpful & easy to follow. Julie in Wandiligong, Vic, Australia

    Hi Michelle,
    I am really enjoying your videos which I discovered a few days ago. I intend to keep practicing and get better over time. I love the finess you play with, especially by moving the hand and placing the tipper. I could not understand how Bodhran players get so many different sounds but you are doing a great job at explaining how it's done. Thank you so much!

    I absolutely love this. My maiden name is Robertson and I would go to the Scottish games in Pleasanton, California every year when I lived there. I was fascinated with the bodhran and bought myself one for $35.
    I started watching your videos and realized that I needed something bigger.(I have piano hands) so I got a 16" and its perfect. I sing, play the piano and am teaching myself tin whistle also. I love music and this is just the cherry on top of the cake. I have a good sense of rhythm so this is the perfect instrument for me. I practice nearly every day. My husband comes in and starts dancing sometimes. Thank you so much for your talent and knowledge. You are right...this just makes me so happy I can hardly stand it. I am practicing days 1-4 still until I can do them at about 100 bpm. Thank you so much. You will remain on my computer forever!!!

    Michelle, thank you so much. Your teaching style is perfect. I am learning and practicing. My daughter plays the violin and so does my 13 year old grand daughter. They have a little Irish band that play around town along with some other ladies. My dream is to be able to play with them . I attended a Bodhran seminar last week and realized I am learning alot more by watching your classes. Thank you. I plan to sign up for whatever you can teach me. Thanks again, Sharon, St. Louis , Missouri, USA

    I bought a bodhran when I went to visit my sister in Ireland. That was a year ago. She has been learning how to play the fiddle and she will be coming back to the States soon. I have been watching your videos and picking up an amazing amount because of your teaching style. How would you recommend learning how to "jam" to create your own rhythms and songs or to be able to play with any song that someone is playing. Thank you so much for taking the time to share your passions so I can continue mine.

    I enjoy your videos! I have been playing snare drum for 60 of my 72 years. I drummed in Jr HS, Senior HS and college in North Alabama. Our college drumline gathers 3-4 times a year to play.I have been playing bodhran the last 15 years, playing in a mountain/Celtic group the last 6 years in East Tennessee. Thanks for your tutorials on all things relating to bodhran!

    Michelle, I just want to say THANK YOU for posting these great instructional videos. I've seen many instructional videos from other players on youtube, and they're all very helpful, but I really enjoy your approach to teaching the bodhran. You're obviously very passionate about not just the instrument itself, but teaching it as well. My playing has improved drastically thanks to your videos, and I'm looking forward to learning much more from you, thanks so much!

    Hello Michelle,
    I got a Bodhran for christmas. I love it. Thank you for your lessons. I am a beginner and am following your videos without any issues. I have played many jigs and reels on my whistle, but the percussion has always intrigued me. This is so much fun and challenging as well. Looking forward to learning more! Its kind of addicting.

    Michelle, you are the BEST. I noticed the djembe in the background of this video. So when are you going to start your djembe series?! I'm interested in exploring how to use drums like the bodhran and djembe in non-traditional ways as well as exploring the traditional/cultural rhythms.

    Outstanding! "Groovy Reel" really had me intimidated for awhile but after listening to part 1 and 2 about 10 times over the weekend, I can manage up to 80 BPM which seemed totally impossible just 2 weeks ago. The building tempo challenges me to keep improving probably faster than I would otherwise. Thanks to your excellent video instruction, i am having a lot of fun playing along to some CDs and sometimes TV. You're right... bodhran is addicting!

    Thanks, Michelle. I am a "newbie", never having played percussion before (I play cello and piano). I purchased a bodhran while in Ireland last month because I loved the music I heard in pubs. I'm very slowly working m way through some of your videos and having a ton of fun (though it will be quite some time before I can get these rhythms up-to-tempo)!

    Dear Michelle:
    Thank you so much for your videos - I'm only learning to play the Bodhran and I have to admit that I was reluctant to buy one before. It seemed like such a hard instrument to play, but your videos make learning so enjoyable. I might not be playing it right, but I'm having so much fun. When I hear songs on the radio or on my ipod I'm imagining Bodhran rhythms for them - thank you so much. I really loved your slip jigs by the way :)
    Peter, Belfast.

    I received my first bodhran for Christmas and have found your videos really instructive. They start with good basic rhythm instruction that can be repeated as often as necessary. I'm confident I will master all the rhythms in your 7 in 7 videos. Thank you. ps. I've also enrolled in a class nearby due to start end of next month.

    I have been playing bodhran for seven months and I really enjoy your lessons because you explain what to do very plainly so it's easy to follow you. Although once you got to 100 bpm you left my in the dust, but that just means I'll have to practice and work harder.

    @alice3913 You are so welcome. We all have to start somewhere so keep up the practice. It only gets more fun too. I always like to hear back from students when the 'addiction' really sets in. It's usually when things start to click and you realze you actually CAN play this wonderful instrument. Then you're really hooked. Try out all my other videos too as you might find jigs easier than reels or vice versa.Keep me posted on your progress and thank you for the lovely post.

    I'm reall enjoying following your videos. My husband bought me a bodhran for my birthday which is July, so I can get to learn how to play it first. Its been amazing watching this and learning. The only problem I have at the moment is working out how to sit. I find it a bit of a balancing act, especially when I'm trying to move my hand around inside to change the tone. My bodhran is just a cheap one, and is very large (non adjustable). Have you got any tips on using a bigger one!!

  • @PattyMacNeil
    @PattyMacNeil 15 лет назад

    I barely kept up at 80 bpm so I'll see how I do after a couple of days. I think the movement is what's throwing me off. My small drum with the cross piece does not lend itself to that kind of hand movement (I get tonal changes with thumb pressure near the center).

    Thank you so much for these lessons! I am 'one of those people'! I bought a beautiful drum in Donegal town a few years ago, and promptly put it away! lol I want to play now, and am interested in getting some direction on HOW to tune, tighten, and care for the goat skin head? I remember Paddy Ward, at Ward's music, telling me to use 'Dubbin'... I see they have several products, though... can you advise me? Many thanks!

  • @alannapass4042
    @alannapass4042 6 лет назад

    I totally get the beat but it would help me to add the hand tonal changes to start say at 40 beats/min. and gradually work up to faster times. Two camera angles combined would also be helpful showing front and back at the same time.

    Wow, I love this one, mine sounds like nothing on earth, but I know if I keep at it then maybe it will actually sound like a bodhran rather than a three year old with a big drum! I took a few days break and when I ame back it sort of works better. I'm really struggling moving my hand around inside, I feel like i'm going to drop it, and I've got a lovely bruise on my arm where I grip it!! Any advice on this???!!?

    Your videos do help. But I just can't speed up without dragging the tip. It just ends up being scratches on the skin, especially on up stroke. It seems there is something I'm not doing with my wrist, but the blurs of all the videos I've seen hide it. Or I just end up playing triples.
