Thomas the Tank Engine and Friends (NES Prototype) Playthrough - NintendoComplete

- Опубликовано: 2 июн 2014
- A complete playthrough of the finished prototype of THQ's 1993
unreleased NES game, Thomas the Tank Engine and Friends.
This was quite the entertaining experience, and one of shockingly high quality for THQ (especially because it's a kids game). It's edutainment, so you have to cut it some slack, but for an elementary schooler, this would have been pretty awesome.
It's mostly comprised of mini-games that pad out three full stories that show up at the end of each lap around the area. The graphics are really colorful and don't look particularly limited by the (in 1993) badly aging NES hardware, the sound is excessively cheerful and chirpy in the way that only Brits can nail (sounding like C64 SID), and it's comically mean-spirited at certain moments.
It's quite the novelty, hope you enjoy it! I particularly liked the bit with the crashed train wearing a rather morose expression.
If you'd like to see the SNES version that actually saw a commercial release (and is pretty much identical to this one), check it out here: • Thomas the Tank Engine...

I was the lead developer on this game - it was developed for THQ by Software Creations in Manchester, UK. I left the company shortly before the game was finished. I can't remember who did the music - it was either Matthew Canon or Tim/Geoff Follin. The game was developed alongside the SNES version. Not sure why they did a NES version - the console was well past its sell-by-date at that point. I think the THQ execs expected the NES to be passed down to the younger members of the family, hence the simplistic game play.
They Abandoned The NES Version?!
I'm curious, do you recall what you guys were given as reference materiel for the game? Direct episode masters, the home video VHS tapes, scripts, etc?
Cool!
@@specialtrees237 probebly VHS home releases.
The music is unnecessarily good
2:26 that moment when the NES has better visuals than the SNES
SNES Race Thomas was ugly AF
@@SleepDeprivedGingerexactly like that was tummus not Thomas
I was thinking the same thing lol.
I feel like the SNES should’ve went the Super Mario All Stars route and used sprites similar to the NES game but enhanced them.
0:38 Don't worry everyone, it is not blood, it is dirt, look at the SNES version and you will see.
lol they should've made it more brown, I know there's color limitations, but Jesus! That's some really red dirt.
“Shed 17 joke here”
No, it’s not dirt, it truly is blood.
*james fucking dies*
OMFG RIP JAMES

This is a surprisingly good game by THQ on NES! Especially considering it's for younger children, as the NES hasn't really gone there with games before. I love the visuals and audio!
Im having a reproduction cart made for my nephews 6th birthday in October my brother in law has an nes my nephew plays
The thing is this game would probably be very rare nowadays if it was actually released considering how late it would have been released and the fact that is was aimed towards a very young audience
0:24 damn this percy theme bops
0:50 Loving that Gordon’s Theme remix!
EDIT: It’s Edward’s Theme, sorry.
You can tell this was a British-developed NES game from the music that could also fit right in a Commodore 64 game
Just got this for my 4 year old to play since we’ve just started collecting SNES bits 😄
0:49 damn thats nice music
I need the soundtrack, I'm yelling in joy hearing Mike and Junior's music on the NES soundfont.
I'm sure you could find it as an NSF file if you Google it :)
WiiGuys 8BitStereo uploaded the soundtrack to this game.
Well, the only NSF that is avalaiable is a broken mess, and incomplete.
Soundtrack is available at Zophar (dot) net
Umm, This Isn't The Prototype, This Is A Homebrew Title Thats On Esty For $30, But the actual proto is a free rom game where you can pick from the main characters at tidmouth, or thats at least what i heard.

"You are a really useful engine."
You're useful, and that's it. I think it wasn't released because it taught kids the reality of the workforce, lol.
Lmao, totally. That, or it sounded too much like the praise a stripper gets.
THOMAS WAS EVERYWHERE
+Natural_Hype At :40 a train is bleeding out on a grassy knoll. Close enough, right?
+NintendoComplete das no blud tho
it's TOTALLY blood
it's red
Imagine if they made a Game Boy version of Thomas the Tank Engine and Friends, it would have been developed by Tiertex and released in 1998. All the trains would turn out grey thanks to the Game Boy's monochrome screen, but there are colorized options available when played on the Super Game Boy.
+rescuehero942
Actually, there WAS a Game Boy COLOR version of Thomas the Tank Engine - titled "Kikansha Thomas: Sodor-tou no Nakama-tachi" - but, as you can probably tell, it was released only in Japan… :p
Although canceled for unknown reasons, the prototype has been surfaced by Frank Cifaldi and is now open to the public. Gameplay is almost the same as the officially released SNES version.
the soundtrack didn't have to slap this hard bro
This predictive the thonas and james race in the great discovery
0:38 James fucking dies

Dang! Why does Percy’s theme actually sound so good here though!? Wasn’t expecting to hear his theme nor was I prepared for it to be this good!
As a Percy fan, this makes me so happy 😊
Thanks ashens x..x:; for getting this stuck in my head.
0:38 R.I.P James
1:11 Tomas, Purcy, Jemes, Dock, Sirr Tupham Hat, the Fermar, and the windmill uwner, Haruld, and Barty look like they are Trolls.
11:50 BatJames the Animated Series

On the mosaic floor of my house from 1975 it appears reflected there
That cool 8bit rendition of thomas's theme
0:39 Oh crap james is bleeding, SOMEONE HELP MY FAVORITE ENGINE IS DYING
It's just dirt
Well done, that’s great.
No, you moron!! He derailed and crashed into the field.
Sliding puzzle music is chip tune Percy theme
Can someone please upload full HQ rips of all the themes in this prototype?
I once played this on an NES emulator thinking it was a finished and released game. It controlled kinda weird
This is my Jam
Imagine this on a bootleg multicart. I wonder if there are any bootleg Famicom multicarts that contain this game?
Not one of the best Thomas games but for the first outing this ain’t too bad
At least we got the memes
Oh god. Watching the full video is a challenge. I dare you.
+Mysterious Beaver Imagine what it was like to play it...
i guess this was never released and development was moved to the SNES making the one PBG played
I bet this stayed a prototype because people thought the red train was bleeding
I think it stayed prototype considering the models don't look accurate, if not, it needed improving.
Yeah, perhaps
Yep, originally the blood is dirt. But the Nes cant generate the red of James (the red engine) and the brown of the dirt at the same time.
Obviusly in the SNES Version was solved the problem: ruclips.net/video/XnnJaM6XjB0/видео.html
it was released on the snes later
It was, I haven't played it though. Was it this same game, do you know?
NintendoComplete based on your play-through they are very similar i have never actually played it but i have watched my 5 year old play it many times
Woooo Woooooooo!
That's all!
I Have A Theory: This Was A Prototype For The Snes Version Because This And The Snes's Versions Are The Same
+Steven Universe. That could be true
I wish i will have that on my Nes Nostagla app in my Xperia
I don’t know which one is better in soundtrack, snes or nes
This is almost just as good as the snes version!
Why didn't they release it?
I would assume because tons of people already owned a snes
@@GamerKeags_YT and even more people probably owned a NES
@@LostEngineProductions ok I discovered that the snes was expensive at launch
Can I just say the races are much better in this.
Like seriously the faces are horrible on the snes.

thomas the creepy asterisks using """"""kawaii"""""" anime cat girl
(jokes aside, hullo!?)
Did you literally make a Lenny Face for Thomas, creators?
1:27 Thomas, James, Bertie, Percy, Sir Topham Hatt, the farmer, Duck, and The Windmill owner all have FAKE looks and they look like they are Trolls

Is this “prototype” even real?
WoooWoooou.
If this was unreleased, how were you able to play it!?
The rom was leaked several years back.
0:38 WAIT A SECOND
IS HE BLEEDING?
HOLY SHIT
+Smiffykid 2015 Lmao he totally is. I originally had just assumed it was oil or whatever cargo and ignored it. That's very red for oil though ahahaha
+ToffeeLimeNo he's just in dirt
+NintendoComplete Perhaps his paint hadn't dried properly and he derailed and now his paint is all over the ground?
LMAO
I'll make this a meme
inb4 someone pirates this prototype
3x5 GREAT GRANDE
Is this real I need to search this up
THQ made something Wong with the NES game the thing saying what train is that on Thomas Percy and mall train its in day time it needs to be night time!😛😛
3:59 Derek The Diesel’s Theme
Its mavis’ theme
@@frankiecanha4458 Oh, sorry!
0:39 james is bleeding...
0:38 why did they make it red?
It's because of the color limitations of the nes.
@@bluecometdaiamonBrown exists in the NES color palette. The SMB games are a prime example.
i r8 8/8 gr8 game m8
How come this isn"t on the nes classic?
It was unreleased
what does prototype mean?
+Gavin Graham It's a nearly finished copy of a game that, in this case, was never officially released or sold
