The Three Stooges (NES) Playthrough - NintendoComplete

- A playthrough of Activision's 1989 NES game, The Three Stooges.
This video shows the best possible ending by earning over $20k by the final day.
What an insipid mess. The stooges' basic humor is here and intact, largely thanks to the quality presentation. The graphics are large, reasonably well animated, and there are a good number of digitized voice clips spread throughout to really give the impression of a quality product. Unfortunately, Cinemaware games are a tough act to meaningfully pull on hardware as the limited NES' is, and though this does an admirable attempt given the constraints, an admirable attempt does not always a good game make. Hell, the Amiga version looked fantastic, but all that did was distract from the "game".
And it doesn't end there! Oh, no! It ended up way later on becoming a Game Boy Advance game. And then - oh, and this is the best part - it got put on the PlayStation as a direct GBA port with badly scaled graphics. Seriously. (No, seriously. Don't believe me? • The Three Stooges (PS1... ) It doesn't even have the spoken intro bits of the NES version. Even if it was shovel/budgetware on the PS1, damn that's lazy.
The game's biggest problems lie in the random nature of many of the gameplay elements (you can easily get a game over just trying to select a game if you hit the mousetrap too many times), the lack of variety (the "games" consist of "get from A to B as fast as possible," "throw things," and "direct a spoon at a bowl." Ho hum. Providing the game doesn't just end your game at the beginning for any number of reasons, sheer boredom will make it a struggle to get to the end.
It's certainly flashy, but for all of its panache, there's no substance holding the game up. It's worth a couple of rounds to see the stooges in action, but you'll quickly stick it back on the shelf when you realize that nice looking still shots on the box and in magazines does not equate to good gameplay, nor even having gameplay to speak of.
In case you have seen it, I did upload a video of this game a few years ago, but it did not show the best ending, and it was only 480p30. So, hopefully that's a good justification for now replacing it.

Thank you for posting this - Ah, the memories! I was about 12-13 years old when this came out. I used to play this with my father, he loved the game, we loved the Stooges. Sadly my father passed away in 1996 and watching this gives me memories of him, memories of me playing this with him. The visuals, the sounds, it really take me back. Makes me a bit sad, but also good memories.
It's funny and extremely impressive for five minutes, and it especially was if you saw it on any of the original platforms it released on. So, it makes a good in-store demo, but after those five minutes? It gets a bit old. Still, the voice clips sound great, and those digitized stills are sometimes awesome, and many times completely terrifying.
I used to play the C64 port. Agreed 100%, fun for a couple of minutes.
I used to rent that game at the now-defunct Title Wave and, sadly, couldn't get the best ending! But, at least the voice clips of the now-deceased three actors from the best-known Three Stooges shorts from the 1930s to the 1940s are still entertaining! Nyuk Nyuk Nyuk Nyuk!
This game gets too much hate (well the NES version at least). I find it to be a very challenging and (when you get the hang of it all) fun game.
To be fair, it was meant to be a game made for 8 bit computers
@@KOOPAS1234 So?
Finally-I get to see the actual ending to this game.
Me-"Ghostbusters II? What the shit?"
Curly-"Hey, fellas! We're in the wrong game!"
Larry-"Hey, this looks like a kids' game."
Moe-"You imbeciles!" (Slaps Curly.)
Curly-"Oh!"
Me-"Only those three could screw up an intro like that and make it funny."
The ghost did not cuss in this game, because the three Stooges are in the video game.
It soon became defender of the crown
That intro was wild for 1989 on NES. Might be the first fourth-wall break in (console) gaming history.
I adore the simplicity of your videos... just such a great way to wind down after a hard day of whatever the fuck...
+Riddle Nanngi Thank you :)
this is a confusing game to follow even though this is the second time i have watched a playthrough, it is such a mishmash of stuff! good job making it threw. can't wait to see what you have next.
Thanks! I have another Cinemaware title coming up that's similar to this one! :)
It’s not confusing. You play the mini games to win money, to save the orphanage. As you progress the randomizer gets faster with more mouse traps. You slow down the randomizer by choosing and winning the stooge fights.
I remember playing this, but never raised enough money.
Great job, as always.
Thanks :) It does have a load of different endings depending on how much money you had.
@@NintendoComplete Correct. For the record, these are the different endings:
Less than $5000 -- Ma loses the orphanage
At least $5000 but less than $10,000 -- Ma keeps the orphanage
At least $10,000 but less than $20,000 -- Ma keeps the orphanage and makes repairs
$20,000 and over -- Ma keeps the orphanage and makes repairs and gratefully marries her three beautiful daughters to the Stooges [Woo, woo, woo, woo, woo, woo, woo, woo!] :D
Surprised there hasn't been an attempt in recent years to make a Three Stooges game.
Given how advanced technology has gotten since the release of this game, with the right people you could probably make a great game.
It would be funny, imagine Simpsons Hit and Run with old timey cars and custard pie throwing
Brings me back to my childhood. Miss and loved the 80's!
I remember playing this as a kid.... ahhh the memories on how we would torture ourselves as kids haha
This game was so solid. Digitized graphics and voices in the 8 bit era, mini games, and classic songs from the stooge classics.
[the Stooges see the title screen for Ghostbusters II]
Me: What Ghostbusters II
Curly: Hey fellas, we're in the wrong game.
Larry: Hey, this looks like a kids' game.
Me: Now That’s Funny
Moe: You imbeciles!
Curly: [smack] Ow!
This video brought back so many memories... Thank you for sharing! 😄

Me: Ghostbusters 2 what the hell
Curly: Hey fellas we’re in the wrong game
Larry: Hey this looks like a kids game
Moe: U imbeciles
(SLAP)
Curly: OW!!!
8:07 I just recognized the melody played in the Surgeon game. It was that Swinging the Alphabet song from the short: Violent is the Word for Curly.

Had no idea the Three Stooges had a game. This looks quite funny.
It's pretty difficult, though. The $20,000 this playthrough earned was how much you need for the best ending with the Stooges getting the girls with them.
You know what the funniest part in this game is? It's the screaming from the Cracker eating contest. I have always found it really really funny.
@@Charly9631e So have I. The cracker eating contest is where you can rack up LOTS OF $$$$. The best I've ever done on this part of the game is $3,660. The key to doing well is to try to snatch the crackers right out of the open oyster shells, especially when there's only one cracker remaining, because you earn an additional $60 each time you're successful ($10 for the crackers plus another $50 for finishing the bowl) ;-)
I had this game for NES, and I remember HATING it lol
Ironically, the movie also has the three stooges making money to save the orphanage that helped raise them.
Curly's grandson would love this
A classic... love it
Those stills are horrifying!
I didn't know of this game till it was talked about in a 2000s issue of Electronic Gaming Monthly. Great to see it played here and with the best ending. I know worst ending is: Less than $5000
I. Fleecem dispossesses that orphanage.
Normal Ending: $5000 would mean enough to cover the overdue rent.
Good ending: $10000 will cover the overdue lease and also repair the damage.
Best ending $20000 or more: having enough for the matron's daughters to get hitched with those stooges. ^^
1:56 I wonder what they'll show if you fail to complete that. Will they show Larry with a radio smashed on his head? 😆
Hard to believe this game was developed by the same company responsible for the Back to the Future games on NES.
Calling Dr. Howard, Dr. Fine, Dr. Howard!!!!!
Which Film Has The Line Hey Fellas, We're In The Wrong Game?
1:46 Hmmm! I'll use my psychic powers to play this violin all by itself OH NO it broke, now i gotta get a new one!
How did THIS get ported to the PS1 and GBA
This was not a good game, while it's true to the Three Stooges it's just not fun to play.
Still weird that the 2012 movie used the plot from this game though.
I hate the cracker eating game the most.
Nice gaming there, puddin' head.
This game was ported to PlayStation in 2003

Yeah, like anyone would REALLY want to play 'Ghostbusters 2'
Ghostbuster 2 is not bad game.
@@VictorGonzalez-xs9oc If you're referring to the Japanese game from Hal Laboratories, yes. The American game, however.....
Hey fellas! We're in the wrong game!
Hey, this looks like a kids game

@@cherc1909 *smack* OW!
I remember seeing an arcade version of The Three Stooges. It was very different but I don't think it did too well either. In fact the particular game was always out of order.
Wow, I had no idea!
