I applaud Bandai for trying to do something different with the Dick Tracy license. Most companies would have probably just made a standard platformer. However, they really went overboard on the difficulty. Still, I remember getting kind of into this one when I rented it back in the day.
Yeah, I did too. Bandai's stuff was pretty hit-or-miss, but they weren't afraid to publish games that broke from the norm. I loved Monster Party, and the weird Godzilla games were pretty good too.
I just got this game on amazon!... I have not seen it in 25 years and I bought it just after it's released. I thought it was a good idea to sell all my games and now, I am getting them back and this one really came to mind as far as difficulty!
I enjoyed this game very much as a kid. Exploring a 2d open world feel for an NES game was so cool to me back then. Me & my dad would even draw a map out of where certain buildings were to solve the cases. Great times & memories 🎮
@@superpan218 If you can't get past the first stage you're as dumb as James Rolfe. Though to be fair, the first stage has the least amount of health power ups (a total of 2, one of which is dropped in the last building by a kinda harshly-placed enemy) and you have to know to push SELECT to get out of the car to shoot the snipers or just have sick dodging skills. But if you have a little bit of patience and intelligence it's not hard.
"Only you could have figured that one out, Tracy!" Well when you have hardened criminals with no present lawyer saying "ok Tracy you got me, I did it" it really takes the math out of the science here if you know what I mean.
I had this as a kid. Never got anywhere in it because I was like 5 and didn't really understand what I was meant to do, so I just sort of wandered around the city and the buildings until I died.
Love that even though their enemies, Tracy and Big Boy and Breathless still get together every couple days for little talks that never end in violence. Something encouraging about that....

Let me get this straight. In order to complete the game, you have to solve all 5 cases by collecting all the clues, questioning the parties involved and arresting the right suspect in each case, all without any extra lives or continues? That's insane. It's no wonder the majority of gamers who picked up Dick Tracy on NES 30 years ago couldn't get past the first case in this game.
I never actually played this game as a kid but watching the AVGN episode a million times has permanently burned the music and sound effects into my brain so now I get weird nostalgia from the longplay too.
I would go to the video store and ask for this every day (the actual release day was never given, just the month). It was so hard but I still made good memories of playing it. The art deco style still "feels" like I'm in 30s gangland.
Ooh, I see what you mean about the stringent design choices. It's neat that they decided to base this game off the original comic strips, they are classics and awesome for sure! I grew up reading a compilation featuring Prune Face, the Nazi spy. I should say, he wasn't an expert with bombs but a chemical engineer who knew how to make nerve gas and also specialized in espionage IIRC.
I remember as a kid working hard all day long with my dad. He gave me $20 and we headed down to Wal-Mart and picked this game up. Hard game. And most people hate it. But I actually love it. Lot of nostalgia for me. I still pop it in every now and then and play through the game. Thanks for posting the play through!

I didn't have much of a problem with this game. I thought it was OK. But it's NOT a stellar work of art by any means. The AVGN is NOT meant to be taken seriously. People should lay off the quotes. My brother beat this game ages ago and I was able to beat it as well.
This game is so close to being a classic. Good idea for a detective game. Good action, recognizable characters. It's similar to the movie just enough, so that way, it feels like it's own thing. Then it turns out you only have one life. The health pickups are hard to use, and there is very little direction on where to go. In a way, it's just like the movie. So close to being a classic, but all around, just a product of the time.
The game that made the AVGN so angry that he literally destroy the cartridge at the end of his video. I still remember at one segment James shouts so loud that the mic audio auto balances itself by actually lowering his shouting voice. That's how angry he is.
One of the few times I think James wasn't overexaggerating his anger for the video, I believe he was legitimately pissed off with this game in the review. I also think he got the same way with Batman Forever on SNES.

I played this game again a few years back on an emulator and discovered that if you killed all the snipers early on, they don't return for the rest of the game. Not sure is it works with the continue option.

The Super Punch powerup makes your punches so powerful that they get sent sliding across the floor and anyone they collide into on the way gets taken out instantly. It's the best weapon in the game to use when dealing with crooks without wasting ammo or...your health. If you shoot unarmed enemies with your gun, you lose health as well.
On a raspberry pi, how do you use the first aid without having the game reset? Whenever I press A, B and select at the same time, it tells the pi to reset the game since it knows to reset whenever B and select are pressed at the same time.

Yeah, as simple as it was, an open city map was pretty damned cool when this was new. It also made it super confusing to play at first, but it was novel. And the car shootouts, getting into accidents with innocent cars, and the gun fights in bars and houses all sound pretty similar :)

Dick Tracy is an ambitious effort for the NES, but it's too hobbled by its punishing design choices to ever really take off.

Ooh, ouch. It sounds like you need to remap some buttons. The only way to use it is select+B

Also I find it funny when he blow up a wall in the roger rabbit game in the episode roger rabbit review and say "yeah look at that, that was pathetic"

Yet another asshole of a game that I loathe intently. I actually LIKE Roger Rabbit, too, but I can beat that one fair. This one, uh uh. It's just too much work for way too little satisfaction.

Yeah, as simple as it was, an open city map was pretty damned cool when this was new. It also made it super confusing to play at first, but it was novel. And the car shootouts, getting into accidents with innocent cars, and the gun fights in bars and houses all sound pretty similar :)
