I grew up on Dick Tracy. He was one of my Dad's favorite characters when he was a kid. He kept a load of his old books and strips in pretty decent condition by the time I came around, as well as some tapes of the cartoon. He's one of the main reasons (along with the cartoon C.O.P.S. and my aunt in DC Metro) I wound up going into law enforcement myself. The movie came out at the perfect time in my childhood. Also loved the NES and Genesis games.
i guess Im asking randomly but does anyone know a trick to log back into an Instagram account..? I was stupid forgot the account password. I would appreciate any tips you can offer me
There was a Mr. Magoo meets Dick Tracy episode of a 1966 Mr. Magoo show which featured Mr. MaGoo playing classic novel characters in Scrooge and Frankenstein.
I'm disappointed you didn't mention The Complete Dick Tracy, an ongoing hardcover book series reprinting all of Chester Gould's stories with the final volume coming out next month.
The Dick Tracy show was my first introduction to Dick Tracy when I was a kid in the 90's. I still enjoy this goofy cartoon with Rocky and Bullwinkle type humor to this day as an adult.
I love the Dick Tracy cartoon and movie of the 90s. Al Pacino was nominated for on Oscar for the movie. I also played the Dick Tracy Nintendo game as well.
This was a great history of episode by Variant. Of course, my first introduction, to Dick Tracy, was the 1990 film adaptation! That movie, is a classic in my opinion! Hopefully, in the near future Variant, will do a rouge gallery of Dick Tracy's villain's such as, The Mole, PruneFace, Mumbles, Breathless Mahoney, FlatTop etc... That would🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
I used to read this religiously in our local newspaper back in the day along with Mandrake (the magician) and Phantom! I still remember when Flat Top died! Big event in a COMIC STRIP!
I remember the tshirt you could buy to get into the first showing in theaters. It was like a special ticket. At the time it blew my freakin mind lol. Now I'm thinking about how old I am, crap. Happy Thanksgiving to those who celebrate and good day to the rrest of you friendly peeps!!!
So Dick Tracy is a adaptation of Elliot Ness who's soul purpose was to take down Al Capone aka Scarface who was portrayed by Al Pacino who played Scarface! Interesting concept 🤔
A video for us people in their 30's about a comic book character from the 1930's that we mostly know from a movie we saw in the 90's made by super fan Warren Beatty in his 50's.
@Marshmallows And Wifi the shadow is partly is the part of Batman that would be mysterious and more than a man. Tracy is the detective and I spose you could argue there green hornet too. A lot of characters that we’ve had for years are based off even older characters
@ Variant Comics i love the movie so much that I had Baron Hats in Hollywood California make me a replica of the iconic yellow fedora. I chose that shop specifically because they made the hat Warren Batey wore in the film. It's among my most prized items in my memorabilia collection.
There were four 12-chapter serials made by Republic Pictures from 1937 to 1941 starring Ralph Byrd who also starred in the 1950s tv show. RKO did four low budget movies, two starring Morgan Conway, the other two with Ralph Byrd in the 1940s.
"Dick Tracy"also appeared in four movie serials..four feature films(The movie serials and two of the feature films starred Ralph Byrd and the other two feature films had Morgan Conway in the title role). There was also a "Dick Tracy"radio show on The ABC Radio Network.
Ahh i feel nostalgic. I watched the movie eons ago with my parents and played the Sega Genesis game with my childhood friends. Good times. Didn’t know he was from comic though...
I highly recommend "Tommy Guns and Hard Times." A hard cover collection of Dick's adventures from the comic strip days. I believe it was a pretty good seller.
Can you do history of the Elementals, Cyclone and Sandman along with Doc Octopus, Electro, Kraven the hunter, Chameleon, Scorpion and the human fly along with Morbius?
History of Blue Marvel! History of Namor! History of Kang! History of The Prowler! History of Impossible Man! History of Batroc the Leaper! History of Despero! History of Gladiator! History of Hercules (Marvel)! History of Amadeus Cho (Impossible Hulk)! If you've done any of these already, update them!
I know its out of left field but i would love to see you make a history of witch blade or some characters from there, i am considering to jump in to that universe ^^
With regard to Dick Tracy's animation appearances you forgot to mention that a series of shorts were produced that appeared as part of a Saturday morning TV series in the early 70's called Archie's TV funnies that also featured shorts from Moon Mullins and Broom Hilda and others and was hosted by the characters from Archie comics who had already had several animated TV shows prior to this. Finding that series, however is almost impossible, unless you happen to run into someone that has a "collector's copy" and by collectors copy I mean, of course a bootleg copy that was recorded, probably originally on Betamax or VHS when the show was run in syndication after such machines were available.
Nice video here. I’ve been a big fan since the movie came out in ‘90. I was six at the time. Was not big on the UPN cartoon since Tracy himself hardly does anything in it. He’s actually “stuck behind a desk” with cartoonish stereotypes chasing the bad guys instead.
I seem to recall Dick Tracey had these flying garbage can like things. They were single person flying vehicles that Tracy and his team could use to get to crime scenes and such. Or did I just imagine those? Just a note on how popular Dick Tracey was. Chester Gould appeared on What's My Line in (I think) the mid 50's. The host, John Daly (a seasoned ABC reporter) crowed after Gould's occupation had been revealed because he said he knew what was going to happen in the next 3 days of comic strips. That clip is on RUclips somewhere. I highly recommend it. Actually, I recommend What's My Line in general.
So your saying there is a connected universe with Sherlock and Tracy. That’s awesome
Yep
I think a reboot of Dick Tracy on TV or even a movie would be very interesting.
I'd love a movie drawn/animated in the style of Iron Giant
Nobody wants to watch a TV show and wallow in nostalgia for a bygone era. Now if you'll excuse me, I have to go watch Stranger Things.

Tracy's rogues gallery is what attracted me to the comics.
Just saw the title and was like: who?! I clicked anyway bc i knew this vid would make me an expert in him, thanks Arris
😂😂😂😂
Same lol
Same here
Crackheads
Dam watch the film it has the boy from Hook
Powers and Abilities: well, he is like really good at being a detective
You forgot to add me likes: Well like, he's like, really good at like, being a detective...like.

Dick Tracy vs Detective Conan who would win and why?

Cant wait for The Shadow, Rocketter and The Spirit
Liked the video before watching it.. Dick Tracy is iconic
Just bought the first 3 years of the comic in hardback it’s so worth it! Love seeing how the story began.
Yooo your a legend for this one ☝🏿 💯🔥💪🏾
Dick, the Question and Sherlock need to be a series. They could go all over the world and into the DCU!
Ah the history of Richard tracy

Dick Tracy: I am the ultimate police officer.

You should do an episode about the Crimson Avenger who is technically DC's first masked hero
Yes
Batman is like Dick Tracy merged with Shadow. That’s pretty dope
And a dash of the Punisher lol ..

That’s because he quite literally is. Don’t forget Zorro and Sherlock Holmes as an inspiration as well.

These pulp heroes are always interesting maybe the Rocketeer or Doc Savage

Dick Tracy was one of the first strips to show the influence of scientific devices like his famous 2 way wrist radio.
I remember having a VHS tape as a kid, it's was awesome.
Of the movie or that one 1960s cartoon?
I love that movie too takes me back to childhood

This comment thread made me go back to figure out how long I've been watching. Been at least 6-8 years. What a ride
Great episode!
Loved the movie. Danny Elfman's score made the movie even better. That Elfman era of Batman, The Flash & Dick Tracy. Good Times!

FOR SOME REASON WHEN I SAW THIS I THOUGHT OF "ARCHER". BUT GOODWORK TO THE TEAM AT VARIANT.✌✌
Im going to hope 1 day this gets a updated cartoon or movie version.
Also there was a radio show in the 1940s geared towards kids, in the vein of Jack Armstrong, Little Orphan Annie, Terry and the Pirates, etc.
Don’t forget Michael Knight. He had a wrist watch to talk to his talking car!
Great show

Also reading recommendations/listening...direct adaptation from the movie in two parts "Big Boy turns up the heat" and "everything comes up blank"
The man in the yellow hat, before he met George.
