I started freelancing on Upwork a few years ago. I used to like Upwork but now, not so much. I just have the basic plan which gives you 60 connects to apply for jobs. Out of those 60 connects, I may get hired for 3 jobs. The reason for that is, I will not hear back from a majority of the people who posted those jobs I applied for. I do have 3 steady clients on Upwork which is good to a point. Just recently, a new client decided to give me a bonus which was really cool however Upwork took their 20% cut of the bonus which doesn't seem fair to me. I understand that Upwork needs to make money but taking 20% from someone who recieved a bonus, thats not cool. When I started on Upwork, they would take 10% from you. Now they take 20%. I was ok with Upwork taking 10% but not 20%. I know if you make over $500.00 with one client, Upwork will take 10%. Not everybody has that one client that makes over $500.00 with. I have issues with Upwork which I am not going to list all of them and they way they operate. I know a lot of freelancers were upset about having to pay for connects which starts this month or next month. One more issue about Upwork, freelancers need to have a valid form of payment, a photo ID, an actual profile picture and a video call with Upwork. But for people posting jobs, they don't need those items apparently. I know some clients have their payment verified badge but a good majority do not. Great video! Keep up the great work!
Thank you for this great video!! I had similar experiences with both sites. Outbided, not paid, cheap-cheap-cheap!!! I found more work (some free at first) and connections on reddit. Directly connecting with people and making connections is key to success and quality. I do voice over and music production, native American english.
It's funny... I went into freelance some years ago to have more freedom and less stress. Now I'm quitting freelancing for the same reasons. the field has gotten so saturated with freelancers and annoying clients that now it's less stressful to just have a "normal" job.
@Krystal C Exactly. It's not worth it anymore, you work twice, one for getting the client (which are getting more obnoxious by the day) and another to actually do the job. That thing about working your own hours? not anymore, it becomes a 24/7 thing. Even though I haven't found a job yet just knowing I don't have to deal with that makes me feel so much better and with less stress. Just remembering fighting over cheap clients and then dealing with their crazy demands gives me a headache.
@@tonybp Same reason for me. In start of journey I was so excited that I can be anywhere and work remote. But now the same problem has started to occur, as @krystal described. You are bound to work more hours than typical 9-5 Jobs and because of so much competition, you are more bounded to even earn the equal pay and make it sustainable in long term...
@@sparshjain9550 And the pandemic just made things worse... businesses shut down, nobody is hiring and naturally more people want to freelance. I've seen people doing things for free under the promise that the next gig will be paid and others basically charging peanuts just to get the job.
Upwork does not apply payment protection, they say it only for marketing and tell clients they can also cancel whatever they want(for marketing), if client wants to get money back even after released he can get, Upwork instead of applying terms they hide behind arbitration AAA which is at least a random process
I am just starting my career as a freelancer. Thanks you for your video.I am glade that I watched it. It is been a month now since I register in both upwork and freelancer and I bid on those project once a day and still I got zero project. I take the tests from freelancer and put the certification codes in upwork. And still result is the same, zero project.
Upwork Suck, yesterday they added a new feature for Clients account that forces them to choose paid to monthly subscribetion!! with 3 plans? free, $49, and $499 monthly. you believe that?
Waste of TIME and selling yourself short... you will never be validated as a pro after using that website... it's ok only for beginners who are still learning the design softwares. :)))) pros have their own network of clients.
Well in tldr Upwork and Freelancer still suck. Btw how do you pitch to clients ? So I browse jobs sites but I send a cover letter saying that I'm offering to work as short term contractor (probably sounds better than freelancer). Do you think it's a good idea?
I don't usually look for clients on job sites, I find them on business directories like angel.co and similar. Will create a video on the topic. In my experience it works better.
@@CreativeBusinessBuild I just watched your video on finding clients with Crunchbase and Linkedin. So I guess it depends on professions. I'm a programmer so I can't target anyone, I can only target companies which do the same programming language. It would be nice if you have tips for people like me.
Reuploaded the video with improved voice volume. Hope it's better now:)

Also Upwork will hide your profile if you don't pay, so if you think you build references , they will simply shut your profile down
