Thank you for this video. I am a new freelancer to Upwork with a lot of experience but did not know how to get started with no client review and experience on the platform.
You should take a look at my new course that's perfect for beginners, it'll take you even more in depth on how to get those first clients: freelancefamilyman.com/upwork-course
Hi Chad! I found your video very interesting because it is different from other types of videos that claim that you will get "1000$" in your first month on upwork but I'll tell you about my particular case... I got my first client about 6 months ago, the job was about a drawing for his swimming team (a mascot logo to be more exact) I did great and I earned 5 stars. With my second client I had a hard time since it consisted in designing a logo which the client didn't like the main sketches and fired me with 3.90 stars something sad since I had already reached 5 stars. My third "client" turned out to be a pirate wanting free work which was not completed without any feedback. But here's the problem... since I don't work I don't have money to buy connects (I live in Venezuela) and then I can only use the 10 monthly connects to get a job which is hardcore considering the rejection rate per proposal. How did you do in your beginnings? did you buy connects or not? And if so how much was your monthly budget? was there any return after spending money on connects? Thank you.
Thanks for sharing your experience. In the beginning, I had to buy connects and I had an employee job but very little money to spend on connects so instead I learned how to get really good at writing proposals and selling myself because I knew I only had so many proposals I could send in a month and within about 2 months I was finally getting a client from every few jobs I applied to and then I was getting money to be able to buy more connects and then my conversion rate kept getting better and then I started getting job invites so I didn't need to use connects. So the best thing you can do when you can only apply to so many jobs is take TIME with each and every proposal you send to make sure it's really good and learn how to sell. I teach a lot how to sell on this channel. Also if you send an example proposal you've written to this form I can review it in an upcoming video: freelancefamilyman.com/contact
In just 1 week, I already got the Rising Talent badge but no interviews so far. Even though I already have experience in my niche, this experience was out of UpWork. Now, I know what to do to prove my experience. Thank you so much
@dailyrolling sure! I started to get interviews in 2nd month and I started to get jobs in 4th month. I could get more jobs even before but I have a full-time job and I decided to start on Upwork as an additional income.
Thanks! I'm working on becoming a freelance web developer but I've dabbled in video editing. I could totally see myself doing what you're doing. I tried to get into freelancing on Upwork a couple years ago but ended up giving up. I have a bit more experience now in developing. I have a lot of case studies, though I cant get a job from upwork, I’ve been on interviews but what I figured out that most of them were beginners and want to outsource their work and have no money to pay me. How can I let companies reach out to me ? I’m a media buyer
hey just wanted to share with you that as I was looking up if it would be against TOS or not to offer to do work for free on upwork because I didn't want to get in trouble or get my account banned, and I found out it is against the TOS :( just thought you might want to know in case it could get you in trouble for giving out that advice.. or if you wanted to add a disclaimer in there so people don't break a rule unknowingly..
Great overview! This explains why I haven't been getting many replies even though I have lots of experience outside of upwork. I've mainly used upwork for hiring, not for work. When you mention sending coupons, do we do that when creating the contract for the job?
How do they verify it was my job if I upload my designs as a graphic designer? I don’t have the process but I have the final works uploaded on Pinterest.
They'll just have to take your word for it, if it was work done outside of Upwork. With graphic design clients know it's very rare that a freelancer steals someone else's work and tries to pass it off on their own
Thank you, Chad. This is really helpful for a newbie. Getting a job at Upwork is not easy. Can you suggest, that I send an appraisal screenshot from another platform (without showing the names of that platform), as my experience and ability? Do they (Upwork) allow it? Thanks in advance.
please tell me that if you have customer service experience for more than 08 years and if you have registered as customer service representative in upwork, what should I do to get an opportunity? PLEASE REPLY
I had my first job with 100% success and great review. Still i can not get a 2nd job and I keep buying connects and avoid unverified payment and 20+ proposals
Hello I just started my Upwork and I got the job. May I ask if it's really necessary to send a refundable linking fee before receiving the payment? May I know if your employer client asks for refundable linking fee upon the pavment procedure?
That's a scam! You should never deposit money to a client to begin working. They should be the one depositing money to you in Escrow with Upwork for flat rate projects. Cancel that contract and report them to Upwork
Yes that's how I started. Get setup on Upwork and start applying to as many video editing jobs as you can, there are LOTS of them. But have samples of videos you've edited first, even if they're videos you just did for fun or practice. The best way to get freelance jobs as a video editor is to first hone your skills with editing, then create samples, and share those samples to prove your skills.
Yes definitely, use testimonials with people you've worked with outside upwork and it'll help you find more clients on upwork, you can actually send a link to past clients off upwork to write a testimonial for you at the bottom of your profile. And you just create a pdf with them to share with proposals.
I don't have anything on my portfolio now. I am a published poet and I could scan some proof on my portfolio, or just put some poetry on for samples. Although I have been published it has been a very long time ago. I joined in 2018 but hardly used my account, but now I have began to use it again.I was given 2 jobs right off the bat, but nothing since, and it has been a few weeks.
Keep applying to as many jobs as possible and pull together a portfolio with whatever you can find of samples of your work but also testimonials of people you've worked with even if not past clients, and it'll help
Showing that you have expertise in the area you're applying for, so having a strong portfolio of anything you can find to prove that you are worth hiring, also some freelance jobs like writing are harder to get approved for because of how saturated that type of freelancer job is on Upwork.
Yes, whatever you have that you've done is enough, and in time you'll have bigger and better projects to add to your portfolio and it doesn't matter if your initial portfolio has videos you've created for free or for yourself, what matters is that you're proving to the client that you know what you're doing.
I felt my heart is uprising after watching this Chad.. I was exhausted thinking I might done something wrong with my Upwork. Now I'm about to fix my profile and portfolio. But if I have multiple skills from recent jobs, like doing graphics design and project management, can both be accept? I only have portfolio in design, but no testimonials in management. So if put management in there, wouldn't it be wrong? Thank You
You can definitely talk about how you can do both but you need to attach them together. You can pitch to clients how you are a graphic designer with project management experience and can help manage the design projects. You don't want to try to go after 2 totally different jobs, keep your profile focused on one thing or a couple things that are all related.
For a job like that you could just show the transcription document and link to an audio file that you transcribed and make a note of how long it took you.
I've made many videos where I discuss how you can turn any experience you do have into an initial portfolio, you don't need paid client projects to have a portfolio. Find anything you can to prove you have the skills you say you have even if it's just free projects you did for fun
So how am I really supposed to show proof as a beginner? Just to invent some proof ? Like, don't get my comment as hate, just want to understand. If I'm a beginner, no one know me, I've never done any job for anyone, where to get that proof ? I am applying to jobs and no one gives me the chance to prove my skills.
What do you do as a freelancer? For many freelancers you need to create a project you do for yourself, not a paid client to create proof. For me, I was a video editor and all I had as proof when I first started was videos I edited for fun or from school and that was enough to provide my skills
Yeah you can only send what you can afford to buy in connects but that's why practicing proposals and getting really good at creating quality will allow you to submit less and get more work, I always say to prioritize quality of proposals over quantity, but it's only through writing many that you get the practice, so. I would spend some time writing proposals to real jobs to practice but not actually sending them and using connects.
Hey Chad, so I actually did some work with another freelancer on Upwork (he _didn't_ employ me _through Upwork,_ however), he has great reviews on Upwork, and I know he would give me an excellent review himself (we have done 4 projects together and chat from time to time as semi-friends). So I'm wondering how I could use this effectively? How could I get a review from him and more importantly how would I display it to potential clients? I actually even considered finding a project, asking him to bid on it, then hire _me_ through Upwork to do it so he can give me my first review... the first review is the important part I don't necessarily care about the money if it's only a day or 2's work. I think he would do that even, but I don't want to be a pain in the ass if I can avoid it and would prefer to do it on my own. Any advice?
I recommend not trying to go through someone else's profile to get those first reviews, it won't really do you much good in the end, just try to find smaller projects for smaller clients with small budgets where you can look really competitive because your skills are just above that which they're asking for and finish the project quickly and ask for that review. Make sure to communicate with client during project to deliver until they're satisfied, even if that means walking away with less money because you ended up putting in more time to really impress the client.
Hi, Chad... Thanks for sharing this informative and useful video with us ... If you don't mind, can I have one of those attachments that you've been sending to the clients to prove that you know what you are doing? Then I will be able to prepare mine to get my first job... Pls🤝👌
