Meditation / Mindfulness, Movement and a nutritious diet makes wonder. We need to go back to the basics. Most of our diseases could be avoided if we lived healthy.
Meditation, dance, and gradual exposure to things that caused panic or anxiety for me helped so much more than the medications I used to be on. Unfortunately it takes more effort than taking a pill so sometimes I slip and stop doing it and things start to get worse, but I feel so much better when I make it a daily habit. I'll take this comment as my reminder. :)

I am on medicine cause of PTSD . MY sister was killed and i was shot 4 times...i did not know better when i had first atack. I wish i was able to listen speech like this ... But i have been doing great for 4 years..i exercise and that hellps me sooo much. And I am happy for first time in my life.

Anxiety has plagued me for a long time. I didn't know I wasn't feeling normal, my ruminating mind focused instead on the pain in various areas of my body. My thinking was irrational, believing I was a dead man walking I didn't want to go to a doctor. I collapsed at work after over a year of feeling like I was being choked, my lead hand and supervisor had called a driver to take me home because I couldn't breathe. Eventually, with the motivation of a few TEDx talks and support from my wonderful family, I began to forge a new perception of life. Studying stoic philosophy and learning mindful meditation helps me identify many of the negative patterns in my thoughts. I work a physical job, my coworkers are familiar with the sight of my dancing. Life improved dramatically across the board for me in such a short time! The physical pains that made me believe I was dying have all but vanished. The sensation of being choked took a little while to fade, but plague me no longer. I've found a beautiful, compassionate girlfriend that makes every day brighter as well! We all have stories, humans are fascinating - shaped and molded through so many experiences. Leon, thank you for sharing your story!
I would recommend you to hide this description of your problem, as it can easily catch on to others suffering from mental health issues, I myself am suffering from severe anxiety and on reading this i felt it.
Jane - I have severe anxiety too and a lot of what Just Another wrote I can relate to. Hiding it does not make you feel better. There will be triggers everywhere no matter what. It's good to talk about it and confront your anxieties. Acknowledging that it upset you is a way to recover - start deconstructing it. It will be okay.
My son's 3rd grade teacher got all of the, "behavior problem" kids every year. His trick? They went outside & played a game &/or ran races a few times a day. My son learned from this teacher how to deal w/his life issues e.g.: rage, anxiety, improve concentration & better his mental health. He's 25 & uses exercise vs Rx to feel better. I'm so grateful for this teacher & people like you to help us understand how important movement is for the mind, body & soul!

@@thinkingofaname6233 you need to train yourself. a lot of ppl hate physical exhaustion but push through so they can have a happier body and mind. you can always go at your pace. don't have to kill yourself doing the workouts. everyone is different and you still get those benefits. I've rarely met ppl who actually like exercise. what they like is how they feel after exercise and the long term benefits such as achieving a body they want and a nice routine.
Physical fitness is an incredible medicine to cope with the hectic life we have nowadays. Physical activity changes your mind, makes you feel more confident which eventually improves your focus and increases positivity towards life.

1 this is the best ted talk I’ve ever seen. 2 my own experience mirrors that of the speakers experience. In 2017 I was given tranquillisers to cope with my fathers sudden death. After coming close to totally losing my mind I started running every morning. I ditched all the medication over 12 weeks and haven’t been on any since. I still run every morning and the difference it’s made in my life has been extremely positive. Without it I don’t think I would be alive today.

Avoid comparing with others, reduce negative social media and avoid constipation as it affects the mind. Your breathing is closely related to the brain [mind] and gives relief from stress-anxiety. To relax sit on a chair or lie down, neck straight, eyes closed, avoid moving too much and observe the sensations of your incoming--outgoing breath at the entrance of the nostrils for 5-10-15 minutes or more. Never meditate with expectations but with awareness. Don’t fight your thoughts. With practice the mind will relax. No deep breathing needed. Observe your breath sensations before sleep, when reading, in the kitchen, when taking a walk etc -----anytime-anywhere. Like me, make this a lifetime habit to have a better life. Great video! I feel like at 32 I am finally figuring this out, this video was a solid affirmation that I have simply been lacking physical exercise from my life all along.
He is a very good speaker - sympathetic resonance The knowledge is calm and controlled given. I have done mindfulness the past 2 months. After this TED-talk I'm going to search for a TAI-CHI school. I meditate more often thanks to mindfulness. AND I'm going to walk , ride my bike more often and taking breaks from sitting at my desk.

My movement is boxing. It engages my whole body and mind and the level of mental and physical fitness needed for boxing puts you way out out of the danger zone for depression and anxiety. sometimes when I shaddowbox I can feel the force of life itself moving with me. Nothing gives me more pleasure than boxing. It is something I just love to do.

I've been so obsessed with work and looked down on exercising as I thought I have no time for that, which makes the tress even worse. My movement is biking. I love gliding, moving along a road, seeing people. I like swimming, I like dancing, I like lifting. I get anxiety when I can’t take care of myself. I will keep moving to keep healthy and cheerful.
Thank you for this video! Like you, I was labeled a "problem child". As continue to learn to more effectively manage myself, I'm a learning about the importance of physical movement each day. This goes beyond exercise for health reasons. Each night, I do Yin Yoga to help me release stored trauma. The results have been powerful.

Overthinking is the problem for everything in our life. When we start overthinking just alert your mind that you are overthinking and also doing things which makes you happy, which boosts your confidence and self esteem will definitely helps.

@Jade if the social aspect is too much to start, go get a cheap set of resistance bands and look up a few workouts on youtube. after a few weeks of routine exercise in your comfortable space, you'll have too much energy to want to stay home/still. you can literally use the bands anywhere, and if you go out to a park and enjoy nature while working out random people in your same position will approach you and ask about them. (it puts you in control of the conversation, and being in a position to confidently share knowledge tends to take the edge off of social anxiety.)
Leon Taylor, I loved this. I've heard a lot of these points before but a great presentation helps make it absorbable. Repetition too helps me. You're inspiring, motivating, and a wonderful speaker. Hearing your personal experience helped me. The video had 270k views which isn't super high, and I use this to help decide what to watch. My mum used to have to wear me out too. 🏃♂️ It was a choice between laps around the school fields or getting bollocked in class! Mental health more important than ever now - particularly running a solo business. So important to get out of your head.
this is so true physical movement is so important to our mental and physical health... and 9 months before I joined a gym i do consistent and see a change of my body performance and my mental health and i feel that this changes i changed my life and i become more confident and now i completely changed and I transform my self.. so do the physical activity guys this is so important to our life
I'm suffering from Schizoid Personality Disorder and one of the most painful symptoms is anhedonia, which is the difficulty to feel pleasure. I don't have a lot of friends and I don't really want to bother friends and family with my problems so what I was usually doing was overthinking. I eventually got to a point when I felt like I was surviving, but I wasn't actually living a life. I started to try to fix my problems and manage my mental health, but getting helped by others was really painful and difficult because of SPD. I started doing some sport, not because I thought it would've helped me, but it actually did. Right now, I'm very busy, I have a lot of work and when I have spare time I train. When I'm busy and when I do sport I can really feel better, so this has really helped me a lot and watching this video and hearing those stories gives me a lot of hope. I can't really say I'm OK now, doing sport feels like a temporary solution and my relationship problems don't have a solution and I don't really know what to do about that... but at least in bad moments I know how I can climb up the hole of depression.
I always wondered if it is possible to jar a brain to a point that it can feel sensations better. My brain is messed up badly from traumas and decades long drug addictions. I started to wonder if doing something like sky diving or other extreme things would shock my brain to release natural chemicals again.

I have been battling with panic disorder for about 20 years now. At first I didn't understand what I was going through and so my solution was planning my way out. I slowly started doing research and found out what I was dealing with, I have since listened to a lot of folks talk about this issue and have received great advise but had never heard the correlation between "movement" and mental health. I am now 55 and not in the best shape of my life, I have suffered a number of injuries over those 55 years and the activity which I loved the most was running, well now with all my injuries I can no longer do that but I can do something, I can still walk and I can still move. I think Leon Taylor has a very easy solution to mental health issues, maybe a little simplistic but I think he made a very strong point. When your overthinking and you spend to much time on your own thoughts, it mostly results in negative thoughts and emotions. When you do this on the long term depression and anxiety are getting really close. I also thinks that not only movement and exercise made the difference but meditation and biological/ healthy food can also reduce stress. When your playing professional sport and your train six times a week it is really hard to enjoy every training session because the only thing that seems important is getting better and perform, but the truth is that's really hard to get better and perform if your not enjoying your sport. So enjoying your sport or exercise is so important otherwise it would increase your stress and negative thoughts. That is why you should always pick a sport which you enjoy and not for any other reason. For example the fitness/bodybuilding hype is very unhealthy, people are not especially joining the sport because they like it. No they are looking for improvement and the are never satisfied because 9 out of 10 times they don't get the body that they want and this only cause frustration and stress. So in my opinion I believes you should eat healthy and pick a sport which you really enjoy and not for any other reason. Of course the sport or exercise should challenge you but it must challenge you in a healthy way, so your mind can also be challenge in a healthy way.

Psychedelics saved me from years of uncontrollable depression , anxiety and illicit pill addiction . Imagine carrying heavy chains for over a decade and then all of a sudden that burden is gone . I went to the library and read on dysth. For the first time. It was like reading my autobiography. I wished I didn't go tru the mayor depression to find out what I had. It was bad. But I guess it was meant To be that way. Oh and i can fall into a mayor depression again. But since I know what I have, l'm trying To take control of my actions, of my life. But it hard since the mayor depression I went tru left big economic problems. Which.. jejejeje brings me down more.

This is so true, I tend to overthink sometimes and exercising helps me to focus on something else. My thing is tennis which I try to play twice a week, I did ask myself what I would enjoy doing the most because you need to enjoy the sport and love it so you always want to practice. I also walk an hour in my lunch break but sometimes I have periods where I stop exercising because of my studies and work and I notice how I feel less happy and more stressed. I hate when I have so much to do and I literally spend all day sitting at work or at home studying in the evenings and weekends before the exams! When I play tennis I always have a smile on my face :)
I'm so pleased you agree and most importantly are doing what you can when you can movement wise. Maybe employ a strategy where you study in 45 min windows with at least a 5 min movement break after each block. This strategy has worked superbly for people i have worked with and on myself! Performed with a smile it's even more effective. 😃

I have struggled with mental health problems my whole life. It was extremely challenging to the point where I developed an addiction to alcohol and drugs which made my mental health and everything else worse. I went through treatment and therapy and am on medications and it helps me tremendously. It helps having good friends and support to help you as well. Whatever problems you have someone like a therapist can help you with them. You can learn how to manage your emotions and stress. It's also helpful to work with people who've had the same experiences who can give you advice and resources in the community.
Fine talk. I recollect going on long walks or cycling around my neighborhood in my childhood / teens, whenever I felt stressed out or sad. It used to uplift my mood and help me deal with my challenges with more energy n determination, instead of getting weighed down by them. Any movement or physical activity helps de-stress and it needn't be just yoga or Tai chi.
Basics from NA helped me a lot. Defining your own personal "higher power", which can be anything but has to be loving, caring, and greater than one's self and more powerful than the disease of addiction"...
I feel this is too simplistic. I’m a physical therapist, so I absolutely agree with the physiological and psychological effects of exercise. But I’ve also suffered from PTSD, and I can say from experience that exercise alone does not always help. Exercise is an important factor in overcoming mental illness, but therapy and medication are perfectly acceptable and, most of the time, necessary adjuncts.
I think a lot of problems can be solved simply. But our brains tell us it's too simple and that solutions have to be complex because we view our problems as complex.
As an OT, I totally agree. I've encountered so many people with sedetary lifestyles and mental illnesses, and just telling them to eat better, and move their body dont do anything. without medications and therapy, they simply dont have the mental energy or motivation to do it. Its a very complex task to help them find their inner motivation and guide them on the right path. especially when most of the mental patiens have very small social networks(or nonexistent) or resources.
Exactly. He is physically strong to say the least, and it took him a while to get back to normal. Lets picture most mental illness sufferers who face isolation and fatigue among other things on a daily basis. Maybe exercising can do them some good, but they are only able to independently do the exercise only when they're free of most symptoms. That's the paradox!
Absolutely agree that Movement and exercise (I do not dispute) has been beneficial to one's mental health; you mentioned ADHD but therein lies a very complex set of problems; for example; attention-deficit hyperactivity, dyslexia dyspraxia, dyscalculia and so on; no amount of exercise is going to resolve those issues. To do so in my opinion will involve feelings, thoughts and behaviours and underlying beliefs, values, attitudes and 'rules for living'.
I find the following reference points in the video to be most important: 0:55 problem child... 2:10 "became easier to manage" 3:10 physical "medicine" 3:40 The statistic. "Everyhand went up...." 5:10 where is time most spent 5:25 Overthinking 5:38 "stress is a global health epidemic" 6:05 ...fight or flee... 6:43 endorphins 7:53 "psychological stress is clearly the enemy to our mental health" 7:58 "physical movement that is our best weapon to respond" -- "Movement is an effective intervention (8:33) ..meditative movement (8:43)" 8:55 regular yoga practice as an intervention--and it must be regular--was effective in reducing post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)... that PTSD diagnosis was no longer valid. 9:40 How to build resilience that reduce anxiety symptoms. 9:50 ...reduced symptoms of those with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). 10:40 "get up"..."even just changing posture"..."rhythm of your breath" 11:15 Challenge to find our physical movement 11:40 movement wasnt the case for him...training and obsessing over detail but hit depression..tried everything and gave up... *recognized what or who was the intervention here* 14:08 the magic ingredient
Absolutely loved this talk. Just one thing I would add is balance. I used my "movement", which was running, to help with depression. But I ended up getting anorexia because I ran everyday minimum 4 times. So balance is key! Don't overdue it ;)

I found Crossfit a few years back. I was never an athlete, and I am not a competitor. However, joining crossfit opened my eyes to "movement" what it felt like to work on yourself for one hour out of the day, the natural dopamine / endorphins you experience is utterly amazing. Within the past year I have fallen off my Crossfit journey, and it has been tough getting back on it, but there's no excuse. I must keep pushing forward and get back into exercise. It really does make a huge difference in your life. Everyone has their moments of ups and downs, they may last a couple of days, a few weeks or even a year+, BUT remember... only you can get back the control of your life! No one is going to save you.
Thank you for this. I am a psychotherapist and am learning more and more about our body's importance in mental health. There are many empirical studies which show that certain physical behavior can lessen symptoms. Though let's not say this is the only path. There a so many who benefit from learning new ways of thinking, from being supported while sharing their stories, and who yes, report they feel and function much better with medication. This emphasis on movement is incredibly important though, and again I thank you!

I totally agree with you! My therapist said that the psychiatrist she used to work with used to prescribe exercise 😭 I think exercise is a great solution but I do also really believe that people would also greatly benefit from the techniques that are learned in CBT. Managing your anxiety, challenging your anxiety. Combined I think they can do wonders!
Swimming is kinda an outlet. I do counseling and meditation too. Each has a different path or effect. Swimming is like my bodies way of doing meditation. It clears my head, gets rid of built up tension and energy and makes my head and heart a bit happier. I don't have to talk or think or be judged. I just do.

I have bipolar disorder, and this really inspired me to get up and move around more. For the sake of my daughter I want to be in the best shape as possible mentally and physically.

I am on medicine cause of PTSD . MY sister was killed and i was shot 4 times...i did not know better when i had first atack. I wish i was able to listen speech like this ... But i have been doing great for 4 years..i exercise and that hellps me sooo much. And I am happy for first time in my life.

Anxiety has plagued me for a long time. I didn't know I wasn't feeling normal, my ruminating mind focused instead on the pain in various areas of my body. My thinking was irrational, believing I was a dead man walking I didn't want to go to a doctor. I collapsed at work after over a year of feeling like I was being choked, my lead hand and supervisor had called a driver to take me home because I couldn't breathe.
Eventually, with the motivation of a few TEDx talks and support from my wonderful family, I began to forge a new perception of life. Studying stoic philosophy and learning mindful meditation helps me identify many of the negative patterns in my thoughts. I work a physical job, my coworkers are familiar with the sight of my dancing. Life improved dramatically across the board for me in such a short time!
The physical pains that made me believe I was dying have all but vanished.
The sensation of being choked took a little while to fade, but plague me no longer. I've found a beautiful, compassionate girlfriend that makes every day brighter as well!

Jane - I have severe anxiety too and a lot of what Just Another wrote I can relate to. Hiding it does not make you feel better. There will be triggers everywhere no matter what. It's good to talk about it and confront your anxieties. Acknowledging that it upset you is a way to recover - start deconstructing it. It will be okay.
My son's 3rd grade teacher got all of the, "behavior problem" kids every year. His trick? They went outside & played a game &/or ran races a few times a day. My son learned from this teacher how to deal w/his life issues e.g.: rage, anxiety, improve concentration & better his mental health. He's 25 & uses exercise vs Rx to feel better. I'm so grateful for this teacher & people like you to help us understand how important movement is for the mind, body & soul!

@@thinkingofaname6233 you need to train yourself. a lot of ppl hate physical exhaustion but push through so they can have a happier body and mind. you can always go at your pace. don't have to kill yourself doing the workouts. everyone is different and you still get those benefits. I've rarely met ppl who actually like exercise. what they like is how they feel after exercise and the long term benefits such as achieving a body they want and a nice routine.
Physical fitness is an incredible medicine to cope with the hectic life we have nowadays. Physical activity changes your mind, makes you feel more confident which eventually improves your focus and increases positivity towards life.

1 this is the best ted talk I’ve ever seen. 2 my own experience mirrors that of the speakers experience. In 2017 I was given tranquillisers to cope with my fathers sudden death. After coming close to totally losing my mind I started running every morning. I ditched all the medication over 12 weeks and haven’t been on any since. I still run every morning and the difference it’s made in my life has been extremely positive. Without it I don’t think I would be alive today.
I personally believes that when you keep yourself busy with productive activities we surely feel good.
There is more happiness in giving, than in receiving.

Avoid comparing with others, reduce negative social media and avoid constipation as it affects the mind. Your breathing is closely related to the brain [mind] and gives relief from stress-anxiety. To relax sit on a chair or lie down, neck straight, eyes closed, avoid moving too much and observe the sensations of your incoming--outgoing breath at the entrance of the nostrils for 5-10-15 minutes or more. Never meditate with expectations but with awareness. Don’t fight your thoughts. With practice the mind will relax. No deep breathing needed. Observe your breath sensations before sleep, when reading, in the kitchen, when taking a walk etc -----anytime-anywhere. Like me, make this a lifetime habit to have a better life. My movement is boxing. It engages my whole body and mind and the level of mental and physical fitness needed for boxing puts you way out out of the danger zone for depression and anxiety. sometimes when I shaddowbox I can feel the force of life itself moving with me. Nothing gives me more pleasure than boxing. It is something I just love to do.

Thank you so much for your inspiring speech. I have been struggling with stress for a while, and your speech is an escape for me. I've been so obsessed with work and looked down on exercising as I thought I have no time for that, which makes the tress even worse. Overthinking is the problem for everything in our life. When we start overthinking just alert your mind that you are overthinking and also doing things which makes you happy, which boosts your confidence and self esteem will definitely helps.

@Jade if the social aspect is too much to start, go get a cheap set of resistance bands and look up a few workouts on youtube. after a few weeks of routine exercise in your comfortable space, you'll have too much energy to want to stay home/still. you can literally use the bands anywhere, and if you go out to a park and enjoy nature while working out random people in your same position will approach you and ask about them. (it puts you in control of the conversation, and being in a position to confidently share knowledge tends to take the edge off of social anxiety.)

My mum used to have to wear me out too. 🏃♂️ It was a choice between laps around the school fields or getting bollocked in class! Mental health more important than ever now - particularly running a solo business. So important to get out of your head.
this is so true physical movement is so important to our mental and physical health... and 9 months before I joined a gym i do consistent and see a change of my body performance and my mental health and i feel that this changes i changed my life and i become more confident and now i completely changed and I transform my self.. so do the physical activity guys this is so important to our life
I'm suffering from Schizoid Personality Disorder and one of the most painful symptoms is anhedonia, which is the difficulty to feel pleasure. I don't have a lot of friends and I don't really want to bother friends and family with my problems so what I was usually doing was overthinking. I eventually got to a point when I felt like I was surviving, but I wasn't actually living a life.
I started to try to fix my problems and manage my mental health, but getting helped by others was really painful and difficult because of SPD. I started doing some sport, not because I thought it would've helped me, but it actually did. Right now, I'm very busy, I have a lot of work and when I have spare time I train.
When I'm busy and when I do sport I can really feel better, so this has really helped me a lot and watching this video and hearing those stories gives me a lot of hope.
I can't really say I'm OK now, doing sport feels like a temporary solution and my relationship problems don't have a solution and I don't really know what to do about that... but at least in bad moments I know how I can climb up the hole of depression.
I always wondered if it is possible to jar a brain to a point that it can feel sensations better. My brain is messed up badly from traumas and decades long drug addictions. I started to wonder if doing something like sky diving or other extreme things would shock my brain to release natural chemicals again.

I have been battling with panic disorder for about 20 years now. At first I didn't understand what I was going through and so my solution was planning my way out. I slowly started doing research and found out what I was dealing with, I have since listened to a lot of folks talk about this issue and have received great advise but had never heard the correlation between "movement" and mental health. I am now 55 and not in the best shape of my life, I have suffered a number of injuries over those 55 years and the activity which I loved the most was running, well now with all my injuries I can no longer do that but I can do something, I can still walk and I can still move. I think Leon Taylor has a very easy solution to mental health issues, maybe a little simplistic but I think he made a very strong point. When your overthinking and you spend to much time on your own thoughts, it mostly results in negative thoughts and emotions. When you do this on the long term depression and anxiety are getting really close. I also thinks that not only movement and exercise made the difference but meditation and biological/ healthy food can also reduce stress. When your playing professional sport and your train six times a week it is really hard to enjoy every training session because the only thing that seems important is getting better and perform, but the truth is that's really hard to get better and perform if your not enjoying your sport. So enjoying your sport or exercise is so important otherwise it would increase your stress and negative thoughts. That is why you should always pick a sport which you enjoy and not for any other reason. For example the fitness/bodybuilding hype is very unhealthy, people are not especially joining the sport because they like it. No they are looking for improvement and the are never satisfied because 9 out of 10 times they don't get the body that they want and this only cause frustration and stress. So in my opinion I believes you should eat healthy and pick a sport which you really enjoy and not for any other reason. Of course the sport or exercise should challenge you but it must challenge you in a healthy way, so your mind can also be challenge in a healthy way.

Psychedelics saved me from years of uncontrollable depression , anxiety and illicit pill addiction . Imagine carrying heavy chains for over a decade and then all of a sudden that burden is gone . This is so true, I tend to overthink sometimes and exercising helps me to focus on something else. My thing is tennis which I try to play twice a week, I did ask myself what I would enjoy doing the most because you need to enjoy the sport and love it so you always want to practice. I also walk an hour in my lunch break but sometimes I have periods where I stop exercising because of my studies and work and I notice how I feel less happy and more stressed. I hate when I have so much to do and I literally spend all day sitting at work or at home studying in the evenings and weekends before the exams! When I play tennis I always have a smile on my face :)
I'm so pleased you agree and most importantly are doing what you can when you can movement wise. Maybe employ a strategy where you study in 45 min windows with at least a 5 min movement break after each block. This strategy has worked superbly for people i have worked with and on myself! Performed with a smile it's even more effective. 😃

I have struggled with mental health problems my whole life. It was extremely challenging to the point where I developed an addiction to alcohol and drugs which made my mental health and everything else worse. I went through treatment and therapy and am on medications and it helps me tremendously. It helps having good friends and support to help you as well. Whatever problems you have someone like a therapist can help you with them. You can learn how to manage your emotions and stress. It's also helpful to work with people who've had the same experiences who can give you advice and resources in the community.
My movement is badminton. This talk inspired me to take a walk right after it. I suffer from anxiety and now every chance i get im gonna play.

Fine talk. I recollect going on long walks or cycling around my neighborhood in my childhood / teens, whenever I felt stressed out or sad. It used to uplift my mood and help me deal with my challenges with more energy n determination, instead of getting weighed down by them. Any movement or physical activity helps de-stress and it needn't be just yoga or Tai chi.
Basics from NA helped me a lot. Defining your own personal "higher power", which can be anything but has to be loving, caring, and greater than one's self and more powerful than the disease of addiction"...

I feel this is too simplistic.
I’m a physical therapist, so I absolutely agree with the physiological and psychological effects of exercise.
But I’ve also suffered from PTSD, and I can say from experience that exercise alone does not always help.
Exercise is an important factor in overcoming mental illness, but therapy and medication are perfectly acceptable and, most of the time, necessary adjuncts.
I think a lot of problems can be solved simply. But our brains tell us it's too simple and that solutions have to be complex because we view our problems as complex.

As an OT, I totally agree. I've encountered so many people with sedetary lifestyles and mental illnesses, and just telling them to eat better, and move their body dont do anything. without medications and therapy, they simply dont have the mental energy or motivation to do it. Its a very complex task to help them find their inner motivation and guide them on the right path. especially when most of the mental patiens have very small social networks(or nonexistent) or resources.
Exactly. He is physically strong to say the least, and it took him a while to get back to normal. Lets picture most mental illness sufferers who face isolation and fatigue among other things on a daily basis. Maybe exercising can do them some good, but they are only able to independently do the exercise only when they're free of most symptoms. That's the paradox!

Movement and exercise (I do not dispute) has been beneficial to one's mental health; you mentioned ADHD but therein lies a very complex set of problems; for example; attention-deficit hyperactivity, dyslexia dyspraxia, dyscalculia and so on; no amount of exercise is going to resolve those issues.
To do so in my opinion will involve feelings, thoughts and behaviours and underlying beliefs, values, attitudes and 'rules for living'.

Absolutely loved this talk. Just one thing I would add is balance. I used my "movement", which was running, to help with depression. But I ended up getting anorexia because I ran everyday minimum 4 times. So balance is key! Don't overdue it ;)

I found Crossfit a few years back. I was never an athlete, and I am not a competitor. However, joining crossfit opened my eyes to "movement" what it felt like to work on yourself for one hour out of the day, the natural dopamine / endorphins you experience is utterly amazing. Within the past year I have fallen off my Crossfit journey, and it has been tough getting back on it, but there's no excuse. I must keep pushing forward and get back into exercise. It really does make a huge difference in your life. Everyone has their moments of ups and downs, they may last a couple of days, a few weeks or even a year+, BUT remember... only you can get back the control of your life! No one is going to save you.

Thank you for this. I am a psychotherapist and am learning more and more about our body's importance in mental health. There are many empirical studies which show that certain physical behavior can lessen symptoms. Though let's not say this is the only path. There a so many who benefit from learning new ways of thinking, from being supported while sharing their stories, and who yes, report they feel and function much better with medication. This emphasis on movement is incredibly important though, and again I thank you!

I think exercise is a great solution but I do also really believe that people would also greatly benefit from the techniques that are learned in CBT. Managing your anxiety, challenging your anxiety. Combined I think they can do wonders!
Sure execise is one of the key factors here. We all need to make it a routine.

nice! forgive me for asking but, what happens when you're not swimming, do you then become unhappy or do you like bottle it up until you swim again?
Lucia Mamta I don’t know what you think about your movements, but in my case, It kind of refresh, more energy and happy.
Swimming is kinda an outlet. I do counseling and meditation too. Each has a different path or effect. Swimming is like my bodies way of doing meditation. It clears my head, gets rid of built up tension and energy and makes my head and heart a bit happier. I don't have to talk or think or be judged. I just do.
Useful information. Be careful what you feed your mind. To feel better reduce negative thoughts. Avoid comparing with others, reduce negative social media and avoid constipation as it affects the mind. Your breathing is closely related to the brain [mind] and gives relief from stress-anxiety. To relax sit on a chair or lie down, neck straight, eyes closed, avoid moving too much and observe the sensations of your incoming--outgoing breath at the entrance of the nostrils for 5-10-15 minutes or more. Never meditate with expectations but with awareness. Don’t fight your thoughts. With practice the mind will relax. No deep breathing needed. Observe your breath sensations before sleep, when reading, in the kitchen, when taking a walk etc -----anytime-anywhere. Like me, make this a lifetime habit to have a better life.
