The world doesn't stop to wait whilst you change lenses so I got rid of nearly all my primes and bought two 18-110mm servo zooms. They now serve 90% of my needs but the one prime I kept is my beloved vintage Carl Zeiss 21mm F2.8 Distagon. When mated to my FS5 or FS7 via a focal reducer (aka Speed Booster) I get f1.9 at the sensor and retain this legendary lens' famed 90 degree AoV. The Zeiss Distagon is the lens you want when you want wide but don't want your pictures to look like you shot then with a wide angle lens!
i work in wedding i use fs5 kit put its slow in focus and hard to use manual focus if i pay the Sony 18-110 its more easy and if it more faster in automatic focus ? thanks
I own both SONY 18-110 and a Fujinon MK set (18-55 and 50-130) in addition to Canon 17-120, which is a different animal alltogether. Fujinons are drastically superior lenses, in my opinion. The difference between f4 and t2.9 is very significant. Bokeh, produced by Fujinon is also much more cinematic compared to SONY. Sony is more of a broadcast lens type and fujinons are true cinematic lenses.
What you completely missed was the ability to do a speed ramp zoom!! i.e zoomed in 80% on talent and zoom out for a wide shot and adjusting the zoom speed during the zoom out (or in) to keep the talent in shot. I just purchased the Sony 18-110 and it's servo zoom is AWFUL for speed change during a zoom! Also, I am on the FS7 Mark 1. There is also major lag when using the zoom rocker handle when plugged into the camera via the LANC connector. Please try this on your Sony lens and the Canon lens. Thanks!
They are shipping now. If your interested let our sales team know or you can buy online here: www.proav.co.uk/fujinon-18-55mm-t2-9-cabrio-cinema-zoom-lens-e-mount It will work fine with the a7r II, as long as you set the camera to super35mm crop mode. It wont cover full frame. Carl
I love the new Canon 18-80 Cine zoom. Underrated for sure. The others don't have the zoom motor for real cine zoom and ENG zoom work. Here's my first use of this lens with my Canon C300 MK II: ruclips.net/user/edit?o=U&video_id=suxc3AGsnAo
I'm personally in love with the Fujinon lens. After watching every single review on it, I placed my pre-ordered for both 18-55mm & 50-135mm 😁👌🏻 can't wait for them to arrive. Tho I'm having difficulties to choose from the Fs7ii or wait for the fs5ii, what's your opinion?
+Hamad Almuftah It is a fantastic lens. Lovely to use. Well, we don't know anything about the fs5ii yet, or even that there is one. If you want a larger camera which does 4K in the formats TV broadcasters want, pick the FS7ii. If you want a smaller more convenient camera pick the fs5. I wouldn't wait though for an unknown camera, especially if you have projects you could be using it on soon. Carl
I am an FS7 (Mark I) owner. Currently I have the Sony Cinealta primes (2nd Gen). Love them. But for rentals of my camera package I'd like to have a zoom to offer my ENG / doc clients. Here are my thoughts: I figure if someone needs a zoom, they are probably looking for a servo, auto focus option as well as fully manual. I'm thinking the Sony zoom for this. Also, I think the focal length of 18-110 is more convenient than having to switch out to another lens (as with the Fujinon) for handheld doc work. Not to mention, paying for one lens as opposed to purchasing two Fujinon lenses to have the same focal range. Personally, if I was thinking of quality of lens ONLY, I'd choose the Fujinons. But since I already have my Sony primes for narrative work, I think the Sony zoom might be the best supplemental choice for me. I'd love to hear your thoughts.
You make good points. Theres definitely a case for using the Fujinon's over the Primes though. Similar quality in a much lighter package. It really depends on which you think your clients will prefer, the convenience of the sony or having the quality of the Fuji's without having to deal with primes. Carl
Thanks for your response. I was actually referring to the Fujinon zooms vs the Sony 18-110 zoom. The Fujinons seem like a better choice for pure optical quality but the Sony zoom seems quite nice optically as well AND has a longer focal length range. I can purchase ONE Sony zoom as opposed to purchasing TWO Fujinon zooms for the same focal range. Also, I'm thinking IF a client wants to rent my FS7 with a zoom lens, then they may want the convenience of having the fully auto modes including servo function that the Sony zoom provides.
we have a fs5 but have found a good offer for a fs7, but we are wondering if the accessories fits both cameras: should rigs, lenses etc. Hope you can help. Thank you for your video and keep up the good work. Regards
Thanks. I saw this. It is only for zoom control, right? I was more hoping if a product would carry three rotary motors engaged with all zoom, iris, focus rings and be able to communicate with the camera body to act as auto focus, auto iris, and of course zoom control like you see in a native lens for that body (like Canon 18-80 lens on C300 or Sony 18-110 on FS5, etc.). Is there such thing?
i shoot with sony, canon and nikon bodies and they are all great cameras that give excellent results, however my sony SLT A mount camera bodies have two major features that lead the pack, first the Electronic viewfinder that allows you to see the finished product before you actually shoot the image which opens the door for many many other features and second is the body stabilization...........i shoot for pleasure....
Got my sony18-110, what i noticed ..my old 18-200powerzoom is wider at 18mm, also 16-35 looks the same at 21mm mark point...as You mentioned electronically controlled parfocal is working really well.
Yes, i like the lens, it have all controls what i need, good range, also autofocus - sometimes its very usable. As i,m using lot of my cam in live broadcast situation then motorized and smooth zoom also needed. I think it is stillgood value and worth to look at if you a sony shooter
I'm just curious as to why the Fujinon lens would not be able to be converted to or be manufactured with a canon EF mount or a PL mount? Is there some reason that cannot be done?
The flange distance of sony's E mount is very small. Thats why so many lenses can be adapted to fit on it. It also means that lenses designed for E mount are very hard to manufacture in other mounts. Carl
Additionally, the Fujinon is designed to produce an image circle that covers a APS-C/super 35 sized sensor, not a full frame sensor. It would need to be redesigned to cover a full frame sensor and would undoubtedly be larger, heavier, and more expensive.
New to this field so please bear with me. I have recently purchased an FS-7 (mark I). I intend to use this camera quite extensively with a DJI ronin for moving about courtside to record training/analysis videos for a team sport, along with tripod setups. Would the Fujinon 18-55 suit this application or, as a single camera operator, would I need the autofocus capabilities of the native sony lense to get an effective result? I want a fairly wide FOV and large DoF to get a good perspective on everything happening across a section of the court. I understand that there are all sorts of variables like aperture, focal length etc. Mounted on a gimbal I was hoping the lack of image stabilisation on the Fujinon wouldn't be an issue. Put simply, is there any compelling reason I should or should not pick one over the other for this application?
+Visual Corp Australia It's not the ideal size for gimbal work as it's quite long. You could look at the Zeiss Batis lenses? www.proav.co.uk/carl-zeiss-18mm-f2-8-batis-lens Carl
Carl just wanted to thank you again. For all the practical reasons the Sony was my choice. But I think if the gig comes for it, I'd get the Fuji for its image quality.
+ismael ramirez Ah, Just replied to your other comment with a link to this video but you clearly don’t need it! Way ahead of me. Glad you found it useful. All 3 are great lenses for different styles of work. Carl
Carl thank you so much for making this video, i bought the Sony 18-110 and ordered the Fujinon 18-55. Not sure if these lenses are close, IQ wise? is there a big difference, enough to buy both of them or would you say the Sony 18-110 is close enough not to spend the extra $4,000 for the Fujinon? I like the image as well on the Fujinon and I shoot a little of everything on the FS7 so HELP!!! lol
+Michael Mystro Pierce If you can afford to have both then it would be a fantastic combination. Means you can choose the right lens for the job. Which one is better comes down to you and your shooting style. For me, I would buy the Fujinon. But I have spoken to many others who I agree the canon or the Sony is the right fit for them. There's no clean cut answer I'm afraid. Carl

I own the Sony 18-110 and recently the Fujinon. Pre-ordered the Fujinon 18-55mm. Currently waiting for it to arrive so I can go out shooting with it.
