This is how you do it. No annoying jump cuts, unnecessary animations or stupid jokes. Just a nice and clean video that explains everything step by step. Excellent video, guys! Learned so much from this.
+Saphir3000 Excellent feedback thankyou. I was worried it would be a bit dull for exactly the reasons you put above. But i'm glad I sticked with my instincts and focused on the content. Plus I cant stand jump cuts. No idea why so many high profile youtubers think its ok. Carl
@@ProAVTV I didn't think it was dull even for a second, totally agree with the comment, and the hand gestures worked too (not to diss any fellow commenters of course, matter of opinion etc). What was this shot on? Like the look. Classy.
Great video. I think it’s worth mentioning that Long-GOP stands for ‘Long Group Of Pictures’, and codec stands for ‘Compression+Decompression’. Knowing what the acronyms mean helped me internalise the info much better when I first learned them.
I've been trying to wrap my head around Sony's XAVC-S codex for months. This is the BEST explanation, by far, I have had the pleasure of listening to. Great job!!! You got me to subscribe, because of this. Thank you.
Great, great video! Thank you for making it so much easier to understand what I found confusing. Also, I played the video for understanding the differences between the codecs and ended up with so much more! For me, the music was pleasant as well and did not distract me at all. Very well done!
Never ever have I seen anyone clearly and concisely explain anything on youtube. This guy is my new favorite. No ego nothing but pure explanation of the topic at hand. Thank you so much. Gonna watch every one of your videos
I knew nothing about codecs and wrappers before watching this video, and I still found it completely understandable. Thank you for this excellent explanation.
why can't everyone be this clear, logical, concise and yet thorough. I just wanted to know what xavc is and if I needed it for the action cam I'm about to buy but not the 4k one. I'd never heard the term before and thought ok fine I'll watch a 13 min video if it's decent enough as I'm more likely to waste time just searching anyway. I legit sat and took notes thinking I learned quite a bit shopping for this camera. this was real fun. a lot more than the tedious and boring af process of shopping itself. thank you so much.
Went into this thinking "Wow....12 minutes on a few codecs, really?" left very impressed by one of the best informative videos I have seen in a very long time. Glad I watched!
And that's how it's done youtubers! This is how you make a video! You look a bit like Harry Potter though.. Maybe that's why your magic in this video worked so well lol xD
Carl, I've been watching many of your videos (some over and over again) for about a year and you are one of my favorite video pros. When I asked myself the question about SONY codecs, I google searched and then you-tube searched .......There you were answering the very questions I thought I would never find answers to, let alone understand them. So Bravo on this video. This video is gold and one more step up the video learning ladder. Grateful in New York City
No stupid jokes, no funny faces and titles, no skateboarding or dronefootage - just information, valuable information well presented. Wow, that's what instructional videos should be like.
I am watching this in August 2020, after placing pre-order for a7s iii that records in 4k 120p, 10 bit 4.2.2 XAVC S-I (All-I H.264) internally. Thank you for the great video.
This video is worth it's weight in platinum! I was having nightmarish trouble with XAVC S and as it turns out, the answer was sometimes staring me in the face (right there on the camera's screen), but I didn't even know it. Thank you, ProAV TV!!!
A job well done Carl! I got to say, you're professional on how you deliver content in simple illustrations, pointing out all the facts and summarizing the topic easier than many professionals out there. Straight to the point. Keep up the good job. You've got a bright future.
+Hamad Al M What a great comment to read first thing in the morning! Thank you very much, really glad people are finding the videos useful. If you want us to cover anything in particular just let me know. Carl
+ProAV TV Carl a quick question though. I'm new to the videography industry, just purchased a A7Rii and wondering if i stick to XAVC S or go and purchase a shogun for the ProRes HQ file. My question would be, is it easier to edit (Prores HQ), accepted on many edoting softwares and would i find a major difference between both? or is it simply for Professional Cinema making that i dont need to add right now. What would be the pros and cons to purchase a shogun for my setup? purpose of shooting is for 4K RUclips films for the time being. Thanks, Hamad
+Hamad Al M The XAVC-S in the a7rii is very good. So quality wise, there wouldnt be a huge amount of difference to be honest. The benefits come in workflow. Prores is easier to edit, and it adds a very good 7" monitor to your set up. Giving you focus tools like peaking, waveform, zebras etc. Ive added one to my shooting set up, almost purely as a monitor. Does that help? Carl
I have been watching a ton of videos trying to learn about how to shoot video and understand workflow better. This video was amazing. Clear, to the point and really nicely explained XACV, which isn't easy for this topic. Thanks.
Kudos for the good audio quality. So many videos target the professional video market and yet have sub-standard (if not terrible) audio. Not this one. Congrats and well done.
Great job.. Just upgraded to the Sony A7iii from the A7s and was trying to decide what flavor would fit well with our bigger HD camera like the Sony Ex1r or Black Magic Lantern 4k
A very clear and well structured explanation. Thanks a million, Carl. Just one tiny thing. In future, please could you leave out the background music- it's really annoying!
Brilliantly & logically explained. I've never bothered to use XAVC-L on my FS7, and after watching this I'm pleased I film in XAVC-I which I'm always very pleased with :-)
XAVC-I is great. XAVC-L is still useful though, you might be on a shoot where you need to be really careful with storage space. So switch over to XAVC-L and save those MB's! Carl
Nice explanations. It would be interesting to compare Apple Prores to XAVC with regard to size and quality. One of the problems I have encounter with XAVC-L is that Final Cut Pro X will not import XAVC-L files from a hard drive. It only will import XAVC-L directly from a camera storage media. This demonstrates that there is still some mileage to go on broad acceptance of XAVC.
+Gregg Palmer Hm thats interesting. I don't use final cut myself so I haven't encountered that. I'll look into it. XAVC-L does work fine in premiere for the record. Carl
Karl (Carl?) - Thanks for the great explanation, I've been filming for quite a number of years and often enough using someone else's Broadcast cameras, but with my own Streaming hardware. I had little understanding of the differences between XAVC, AVCHD, wrappers, codecs, etc. apart from what I learnt many years ago when so many of them weren't even around. This vid of yours has helped me immensely after just having purchased a Sony PXW-Z280 (which came in yesterday) - It is the Bees Knees!!! There are a few feature it is lacking and hoping Sony will take a few of my suggestions for the First Firmware update, but happy with it so far. I have opted to keep the costs down initially by using SD cards in the MEAD adapter, and this works for all Formats up to XAVC-L without a problem. However I note that when I go to XAVC Intra it fails within about 5 seconds of recording, throws a Media Full message and the alarm goes off on the camera. Further to this that Card then becomes unusable unless I format it - even though looking at it on a PC it is practically empty (128B Sandisk Extreme Pro - Genuine.) The query is - I see on the specs of the Cam that the XAVC-I write speeds are up to 600Mbps - which translates to 75MBps - which is less than the SD cards support at up to 90Mbs write speed. I will try them at a rate/frequency of 25 rather than 50 in Record Mode to see if they still fail...But in your vid here you mention much higher rates for XAVC-I and L than the specs of the Cam do...and I had seen somewhere that in fact the Express34 cards (MEAD/SxS adaptors) - state that their Data rate is capable of 1.3Gbps - so does this mean Sony are Misquoting the DATA requirement of the CAM just to make sure that when you DON'T use their SxS cards you have no come back to them as they simply say NOT SUPPORTED!?!?
Thank you Carl. Very good idea, nicely pitched, very clearly presented and very helpful. I found this video particularly useful in firming up my requirements and am quite likely to respond by placing an order with you in a few months (after NAB). Others ideas you may wish to consider are DOF and lens/sensor size, video backup and archive (Ransomware, system crash, LTO 7, Bluray, HD etc), 'horses for courses' (cameras, tripods etc), bayer versus prism, full frame v super 35/mft v 1/2 inch 'ish and interchangeable lenses v fixed lens. I thought this video was an excellent response to the present situation and thank you again for the welcome value add. Ongoing good support and advice helps reduce the overall cost of ownership, it is not just a question of lowest capital cost. (Usual disclaimer!) Bob.

thank you for your comment. highly appreciate it. i was looking for some explanation on xavs codecs and yours is the best. some observations: you explain very clearly everything but it would be much more didactic if you would show text on screen as you speak i thing it would be better also to have some examples of everything...eg. for file sizes recorded using different types of codecs but overall is a vary good presentation. thank you!
Thank you, for this first class video tutorial. Perfect image and perfect audio. All is clearly explained and very helpful. As an "aside", I think I would prefer jump cuts rather than that awkward second camera MCU where the presenters' eye-line stares off into space. I find that quite awkward. Why not shoot 4K single camera and simply crop into the MCU when required?
Awesome explanation. Now I have something to share with my clients when they go "Can you tell me where I can learn about codec?" Which happens way more then you think.
So the three things I do is 1) Assist and teach at a studio in CSUSM and I have to teach a lot of students and professors about the video making process. This is where I get asked this the most. 2) When I work with clients doing free lancing work they usually want to do one big expensive video and then a bunch of little ones on their own and they ask me questions on how to make the little ones cheaply and they usually ask "What's a codec?" 3) I have three youtube channels with my newest one being this one.
+ProAV TV I think one of the coolest things is would to be to touch on the Audio part of Audio Visual. Specifically explaining what a EQ Chart is and what you wanna look for when buying a Mic or trying to level things out for a scene at events, in studios, and/or vocals if you haven't touched on that yet. You have a lot of great videos on visuals and I think you could share a ton about audio stuff cause your audio is top notch. If you wanna know anything else let me know.
This one of the best explanatory video I have ever seen before. Great Job !!!II have just purchased AX53.. consumer camcorder. Now I fee that I know a bot technical knowledge about the recording format. Thanks
I've had a tough time in Premiere with some footage and I think you nailed it by saying the computer is processing HAVC L and so it searches for all information and then presents the preview. I think I have to adjust my workflow...
Dude, this ist the best explenatiom for somethingthat i find on yputube. its not like: you want to know how to cut something in premiere and he explanes you how to open a project first. nice job dude.

+Alex Klinger Good to hear! We try and post at least once a week, and I try and reply to most comments personally.
Welcome to the channel!

That was the best display of effective communication I’ve ever seen haha. You’ve saved me a lot of research!
Glad it helped!
Carl
Right to the point! Best explanation for Codec and Wrappers I have seen. Keep up the great work!
Thanks! Glad it helped
Carl
Awesome explanation. Now I have something to share with my clients when they go "Can you tell me where I can learn about codec?" Which happens way more then you think.
+NerdCulture Really? How interesting, I've never had a client who has cared in the slightest about codecs!
What sort of work do you do?
Carl
So the three things I do is
1) Assist and teach at a studio in CSUSM and I have to teach a lot of students and professors about the video making process. This is where I get asked this the most.
2) When I work with clients doing free lancing work they usually want to do one big expensive video and then a bunch of little ones on their own and they ask me questions on how to make the little ones cheaply and they usually ask "What's a codec?"
3) I have three youtube channels with my newest one being this one.
+NerdCulture Very interesting.
Is there anything else that would be useful for us to make a video on do you think?
Carl
Thanks
+Hemant Patki Glad it helped!
If we can help with anything else let me know.
Carl
Appreciate this, probably the only video properly explaining this out there . Saved this and will share
FANTASTIC explanation!! Great work on this video.
Thanks a million!! I was having a hard time studying about codecs, wrappers and especially Sony's XAVC fam and This video helped me a lot! What a great video! This is the best explanation/review video I've seen so far. Thanks!
Thanks, really glad it helped.
