Best Power Axe Combos: Switch Axe Combo Guide (MHW Iceborne)

  • Axe mode for the Switch Axe got some NICE BUFFS in MHW Iceborne. I mathed out all of the DPS numbers on the axe combos and determined which are the best combos to use for what situations when running a Power Axe focused run in Monster Hunter World Iceborne.
    Power Axe Mode for SA along with various Motion Value Buffs has made Axe Mode actually useful in Monster Hunter World Iceborne. The new axe fade slash, stronger upswings, better wild swings, and of course the extra Flinch Damage on Power Axe are all amazing improvements to Switch Axe.
    This is only the first of our Switch Axe Combo Guides we'll be putting out. Power Axe Runs are great for trip play and great for runs where you cannot run Sword Mode reliably. It's also the best Switch Axe Playstyle to learn if you only want to learn 1 particular playstyle, it works great against every monster in the game.

      Could you make a guide that is not dps related or actually not so much math related? I mean a video about how to survive with each weapon. What I mean you have regular monsters you can stagger and then there are monsters you just have to dodge or deal with while DPS constantly (Right now back in HR Arch Tempered Nergi comes to my mind). For those monsters It always felt like Lance/LS is the way to go. They have natural ways of surviving and DPS (Counter and Foresight slash). Meanwhile some weapons have higher commitments like Switch Axe. How do you DPS on those and survive constant onslaught from the monster?

    Axe mode is my favorite mode of the switch axe. I'm always having a bad time whenever I try to go for sword, and find myself wasting time more than anything whenever I try to switch. Also wild swing into heavy slam is just so cool.
    Looking forward to the sword combos though, since they're the ones I'm the less comfortable with in terms of what's better and what's bread and butter.

    • @klintonjohnson655

      Pravin S I would say that it is. The combos are definitely different and it would take a bit to get used to but you’re essentially trading just fluidity(when attacking only) for more mobility and power. Like I said I use the axe more than the sword Bc I’m more mobile and it feels like I deal more damage in a shorter amount of time.

As a PC Player still enjoying our new release of Iceborne, i've found the wiki is unfortunately very lacking in updated information like no one from PS4 took the time to update anything in the 6 months the game was out. I did love playing it in base world but it did feel underwhelming since I didn't want to be in sword mode 100% of the time. I honestly wouldn't mind seeing more of switch axe. I know its not optimal but I do enjoy using all styles mixed together.

    Sometimes you can Morph Sweep under some monsters or to the side to get around attacks, but Heavy Slam and ZSD are generally better combo finishers. Easier to time to the big hits and specific parts. Heavy Slam also hits pretty high so you can hit things like Deviljho and Anjanath in the face with it.

    I just picked up the switch axe a little while ago but only for the powered up axe mode style because I didn't wanna deal with crappy sword hops and having to manage the gauges so much. Axe mode can be really viable though! Not really speed run worthy but the trips and flinches while using wild morph is insane! I just got into using the sword more in the coast couple days though, this weapon is way more fun than I thought it would be.

    This is a good video. I don't typically used Switch Axe but that's due to not caring much for the play style & not due to the DPS the weapon can achieve. The weapons I still have to learn are the Switch Axe, Sword & Shield, Hammer, Hunting Horn, & Light Bowgun. I can play all the other weapons just fine & while I'm curious on y'alls opinion about all the weapons I'd like to see a series of video's talking about every weapon & how to use them properly (including combo's) that Icebourne has brought about. I haven't seen anyone post video's about the new changes as of yet & I don't think the beta tests showed all the changes they made by the time the game released.

    I tend to go for a mixed style, but I really wanna try axe-exclusive play. I kinda wish that amped and power axe played off each other in some way to incentivize swapping between the two, since it is a SWITCH axe :b
    It's still better than just being stuck with just sword mode.

    • @straightupgutta
      @straightupgutta 4 года назад

      I'm trying to think how you could to that but as of right now axe mode compliments sword mode not the other way around. (I haven't played iceborne) but from all the speed runs I've seen, people are still in sword mode 60 to 70 percent of the time.

      I find a hybrid power axe/amped sword style is really really fun. For me, it's way more fun to use the Swax for it's intended purpose: switching back and forth.
      The rework added SO much nuance to the weapon, that I don't believe there is a 'right' way to play it anymore

    I found a way to consistently get heavy slam wake ups on sleeping monsters.
    Your camera distance from your character should be set to: "far" for this to work.
    While unsheathed, aim your slinger straight down at your feet with L2.
    While holding L2, inch towards the monster until the head is visible at the top-center of your screen.
    Then move backwards exactly enough so that the head is just off screen.
    Let go of L2 and the camera should zoom out enough for you to see the head.
    You are now standing at the exact spot to land heavy slam.
    Probably really late, but whatever.

    NGL... I kinda despised the Swaxe for the longest time. I genuinely hated it and thought it was trash [MHW base game]... and because of that, I never looked into the new changes and thought of it as a meme weapon until I saw your last video on Swaxe and decided to give it a try. I now main the weapon in question and I just think it is amazing. I primarily use the axe form as it is more manoeuvrable against creatures like Rajang which I am not even going to joke about soloing without carting [I did try it sword mode and carted 2 times, so it wasn't the best match up for my playstyle] but I use all the different playstyles throughout a hunt when need be [Even when focusing on one is 'better dps'] because enjoyment is needed to like playing a weapon.
    Just wanted to let you guys know that you are the reason why I found my new fav weapon in the game [Came here to learn best combos because I kept spamming Y [PS4 Y is triangle] and found it... less than effective.
    Edit: Not the meme run, the 'Why is Swaxe good'

However no matter what I try, it won't let me do a heavy slam to go into the power axe mode. It doesn't matter how many times I use Wild Swing, it'll never come up as an option in the top right corner of the screen, and instead, I just get a downward slash when I input it. Do I have to get to master rank and get an iceborne exclusive switch axe first before I get to use it?

    Does the axe buffed up break parts better than sword? I am unsure what to use when cutting tails.

    Anyone got a list of motion values for SA? I found a seemingly good list on Reddit, but I’ve found some errors in it, and differences between it and Jinx’s data

    did they ever make a sword mode video for this? or did they come to the conclusion that axe mode is overall better (except for the wild moprh attack)

      Prince Leo of Nohr it’s Barioth :) and make sure you craft some MR armor and break his front legs (arms?) first to make him more sluggish!

    Question: Start of video. Is he somehow animation canceling I dont know but. The guy to your left, his wild swings are faster then yours. He wild swings roughly 5 to 10% faster then you are. Why is that?

    While I was using the switch Axe in battle, my fingers slipped and accidentally pushed a random button. my character did this weird animation where she combined the Slinger ammo on the switchaxe. Does anybody know anything about that?

    What I don't get about all these mhw world videos, is why everyone calls the moves something different than what they are labeled.
    Wild 1 > downslash - what they call it
    Wild swing > overhead slash - what it's labeled as.

    Ohh ohhh unfortunately I feel that we are gonna get Meta Set videos by the time the next MH comes out like the high rank ones were done real close to Iceborne

    • @Heisenberger_29
      @Heisenberger_29 4 года назад +1

      High Rank meta sets weren't done that close to Iceborne, they just kept being updated whenever new monsters/AT Elders came out, so we only had their final iterations in May this year when AT Nergi came out.

  • @megatonante
    @megatonante 4 года назад

    By "trip" you mean the monster actually falling down or just the "stun" animation in which they vomit saliva, the one which gets a reset if you clutch claw?

    • @tannermilo
      @tannermilo 4 года назад

      trip is different again its more like a flinch but it only last a second or two but are quite easy to spam as you only need to do a small amount of damage compared to a KO or a flinch

    When you say gunlance is one of the highest dps rotations whay shelling type are we talking? The slam shot for normal or the buffed charge long shells

    • @zecuse
      @zecuse 4 года назад +1

      He said it was aerial gunlance, so the shelling doesn't matter because all you do is find a ledge, get the monster on top, and endlessly backhop + R2/RT (jumping reload) on the head. This puts you back on top of the ledge and I think you can full burst (so normal is preferred) on the landing as well, but I'm not sure how that affects positioning for the next backhop. Same idea as aerial greatsword but that uses △/Y instead.
