  • Why do rotator cuff rehab exercises never seem to work? Because most rotator cuff injuries, tendinitis and impingement problems are symptoms not the cause. A large part of the underlying problem is usually dysfunctional scapula movement & position … and it’s easy to fix. Here’s how to fix shoulder pain, tendinitis & impingement for good.

I’m 3 years late but I hope you guys see this. I have been to orthopedist, chiropractor, gotten massages, done physical therapy and nothing has worked for years. Once I get these 2 simples stretches down and was doing them correctly my pain has literally completely vanished. It felt like a sack of pain in my shoulder blade that would never go away. Once I learned to use these muscles together in these stretches all my pain went away. Absolutely insane and i’m so thankful

I should add... only do these exercises in the PAIN FREE range of motion. If it hurts your shoulder when your shoulder is in the overhead position in either of these exercises, don't go that far. It should improve with time but always keep in the pain-free movement range.

I have shoulder impingement, I can’t raise my left arm above shoulder height but when I use broom stick as support, I can achieve nearly full arm stretch over my head, but when I remove the broom stick support I’m unable to hold the vertical position, my arm collapses to shoulder height with pain.
I’m able to do 2nd and 3rd exercises you suggest but not the first one. Can you suggest any other exercises I can do to strengthen the shoulder muscles involved in overhead arm raise ? Thanks.

Thanks Rebecca. Yeah, it's essentially the same exercise, but it can be used as prevention and a fix so I thought I'd put it in there again as plenty will not have seen the other video. I actually designed the exercise. There's usually an initial improvement as the muscles are activated and start to work again. Then there is a second, slower improvement as the muscles strengthen. So stick with it! It's my fave.

I was in the same boat.
Before I found this video, I found a book about hanging from a pull up bar and that also worked wonders, as it creates space in the shoulder.
That book is "Shoulder Pain? The Solution & Prevention, Revised & Expanded" by John M. Kirsch M.D., who is an orthopedic surgeon.
Between the exercises in this Body Fix Exercises video and the hanging, my shoulder pain has almost entirely disappeared, though the tear damage itself will probably never heal.
The position of bar hanging moves the damaged muscles safely behind the shoulder joint. You can do full or partial bodyweight, do 10 minutes of 15 to 30 seconds of hanging with a break in between. I use a workout timer app and use it to efficiently time this.
Bar hanging pulls the bones and creates space. It will reverse the incorrect bone shape and positioning that has occurred, over time, the bones will regain the shape that they had when we were much younger.
As soon as you're done bar hanging, that is the time to perform the exercises in this video and any other shoulder workout you wish to perform, because even when you're just starting with the hanging, it will create some temporary relief and you can do these exercises with less pressure on the injured muscles.
This video is great, the bar hanging is great, the exercises my physical therapist gave me weren't so great, it was through RUclips that I found out about bar hanging therapy and also the Body Fix Exercises routine.

Something I have done as a control for the core when items like exercise 1 (and other that are similar) is to get a kettlebell and excercise band. I tie the band to the kettlebell and place it underneath my back, about in line with the belly button and have it tense enough whereby if I raise my abdominals/core and arch throughout the movement- the band slides out. By doing this I’ve now got a control to ensure I keep my core activated and in place.

Thank you for this, clearly explained and so grateful to have found your channel! Subscribed! I have shoulder/neck pain for years and not one physio show me this exercise which seems to help! I have tight painful 1st/2nd rib and also tight scalene muscles which find it hard to stretch. Would you mind doing a video on how to stretch these areas please? I feel so hopeless and just want to give up…years of physio doesn’t seem to help. I wish you are in UK so I can get treated. It’s so hard for me to find someone who is experienced like you. I’m just running out of options and just want to feel better and my shoulder pain is really affecting my life and mental health. Sorry for the long message, I hope you will do a video on that when you have the time and have a good day.

Hey Anna. Thanks for the lovely message. Try these exercises. ruclips.net/video/0zcNvVnKjCA/видео.html
They are for that higher area and exercise 2 will stretch your scalenes too.
Also try massaging the muscles right UNDER your collar bone. Rub under your collar bone, or use a tennis ball to press in tender spots in that area. The pec major attaches in that spot and can affect the scalenes and ribs. I'll be doing a video on that area (related to AC joint pain) in a few weeks time. Hope that helps.

Will try those too! My frozen SHLD got healed FAST with Teres major and minor + low trapezius exercises: Unilateral horizontal scapular exerc. (not involving the biceps ), started with pulling bands, then weight with horizontal cable up to ~10% body weight GRADUALLY. NB one hand at a time, otherwise only traps get the work.
The hard stretching AFTER exercise help general spine condition: Some call it the greatest stretch: left leg at front knee at 90degrees, right leg extended back, balance with right hand on the floor (might need a raised base 5-10cm for horizontal scapular plane), then rotate torso right such that left hand goes as far as right and up is possible without pain (left arm 90degrees elbow), and back rotate torso to as far left and up (arm extended. 0degrees elbow). At 50 yo I need it EVERY day. One can do a good hip stretch too in that position.

I saw a guy demonstrating a similar version of these two exercises in a video years ago. They were the only exercises to completely fix my popping shoulders and right side shoulder impingement issues. About a month ago, the impingement came back with a vengeance. I’ve been looking for that particular video almost daily since. I was exceptionally pleased and didn’t need any convincing that the two exercises demonstrated in your video are the real “key” to fixing shoulder pain. I had a similar experience when I first did these exercises. I believe it's because the Lower Traps and Serratus Anterior can become underactive and unused. It's as if the brain forgets it should be using these muscles but then these exercises force you to use these muscles. The brain then goes "Oh yeah, I forgot about those muscles" and starts using them again. (Similar to "sleepy glutes") I had a 50% improvement within 5 days. The other 50% took 2-3 months because the muscles had to be strengthened and that takes time. So keep going!

After 2 frozen shoulders, protruding scapula, then rotator cuff pinch I’ll try this. I’ve known for years I have some scoliosis. My sister had it bad, had a rod put in when she was little. Helped my rotator cuff by passive hanging then got that other frozen shoulder. Thank heavens it wasn’t as bad as the first but now I never really got my full range of motion back. I used to have one arm I could scratch my back but can’t now. It’s still unfreezing. It takes forever but it’s not possible to hang unless I do it one armed and hanging on even w hook grips is lessened. I’m going to try these for that scapula. Thanks. Cats 😅

After repair of ruptured Pec major, 8 mos ago, I’ve struggled to regain forward flexion (hand straight over head). Lots of PT, hundreds of hours of exercises and a couple steroid injections later brought me to this video. While only a couple days into the routine, I’m finally experiencing gain in ROM that I believe will be sustained and hopefully without bringing back shoulder pain! Perhaps more than anything it finally helped me identify how my movement was modified and really only “hinging” in the shoulder joint itself.
I’m not a physio so my explanation may be confusing, but I’m very happy to have found your channel and this routine.
