Watching the clock is almost like a behind-the-scenes of how these are recorded. Even more fascinating, the chocolate which does not appear to be present at 4:52pm, is present at 5:04pm, and does not appear to be present at 5:23pm. I imagine even more chocolate has gone missing since this video was posted!

Then there are 6 for the 0-5 in the minutes' 10s column, then another 9 for the minutes' units.

"I drive a giant SUV so that I'm safer." Thereby making the roads LESS safe for EVERYONE ELSE. And the more giant SUVs around, the more it levels back out again to "well now you're all equally unsafe". Except now you have much higher centers of gravity, vehicles that are harder to control, vehicles that do much more damage to anything else that they hit, make it harder to see anything else on the road, that are literally harder to drive and park due to their size, and that are wasting many more resources both in manufacturing and in fueling. Also, putting more wear on the roads.
Don't drive SUVs. And if you absolutely need the capacity, pick a smaller, less massive one.

    • @mittfh
      @mittfh 4 года назад +8

In the UK (which, admittedly, is a relatively small island), fuel economy is often a big driver of vehicle sales, given petrol (gas) costs over £1/litre and diesel varies from the same price to 10p/litre more expensive.
Thus smaller cars tend to be more in abundance than bigger cars - plus the bigger SUVs (or Chelsea Tractors as they're sometimes called derogatorily) can only just squeeze into the standard parking space, leaving little room for the occupants to get out if the adjacent spaces are occupied.
Added onto which, even tiny cars often have 5 star ratings in the Euro-NCAP crash safety tests, due to very efficient use of crumple zones in the engine compartment, a more rigid passenger compartment (including side impact protection beams in the doors), airbags everywhere and seat belt pre-tensioners (which also minimise whiplash).

If you need capacity, drive a mini van. People don't like them because "they're not cool", but they have twice as much capacity as any SUV and are far more comfortable. The only thing that compares is a full sized pickup truck with a crew cab (a new one, where the back seats are huge) and a fully covered bed (or the luxury SUVs like Cadillac and Lincoln make which are basically just pick ups). The modern SUV is just a clunky, heavy, fuel inefficient car with AWD (sometimes 4WD).

Great vid! You know which bits to explain and which bits to just say "it's complicated physics". :)

First of all thanks for all the great videos your making. Very interesting and with a bit of humor. Perfect for learning. And when you talked about g-force I came to think about Kenny Bräck The swedish race car driver (yeah, i'm from sweden) when he crasched, the g-force meter or whatever the english word for it is mesured 214 g. I think theres a bunch of videos of that crasch on RUclips.

So glad I found this channel!
Great to see Col John Paul Stapp mentioned!
If you want to see the horrific effects of explosive decompression, google "Byford Dolphin." A "diving bell" accident were they went from 9 atmospheres to 1 in an instant. Pics are available if you look hard enough, but the written description is gruesome enough. The death scene from the Bond film "The Living Daylights" appears to be based on that accident (the pressure change matches).

Very cool video 😎. My brother made a similar unit to launch sensors into tornadoes, not an exaggeration lol. I believe that fella in the rocket chair detached both his retinas in that experiment 😳. Thanks for the video! 👍😁👍

I read a comment from a guy last week explaining how tough he was because he crashed his BMW and the front end was destroyed, while he was relatively unharmed.
I couldn't be bothered explaining to him that this was designed into the car.

NightHawkInLight improved upon the rig by using disposable plastic cups with an o-ring instead of foil or film for the destructible end cap. Might want to look through his videos for it. Cups are available at any convenience store and getting the vacuum cannon ready is a heck of a lot faster. (Like less than a minute to jam on the plastic cup vs. whatever time it takes to smooth out and avoid tearing while stretching a cover over the end.) Just thought I'd put that out there for anyone interested in this kind of thing.

Car design is genius. If you impact something with your wheel, the tire is designed to give out first. Then the wheel, followed by the lower suspension arm. Axles are designed to just snap.
After all of these parts have done their job and given in to the impact, then it's time for the frame and subframe to do some more absorbing of the impact.
Crumple zones are basically weak points places across the front and rear frame to bend/deform in certain ways.

A few years ago I was involved with similar experiment, experiment always sounds better to describe fun destructive behavior, at our local makerspace.
We found out that there was a large diminishing return from lengthening the cannon. Since the ping pong ball is not a perfect fit, at some length enough air leaks aroung the ball to stop it.
What made a huge difference was popping the Mylar burst disk with air pressure rather than puncturing it. 450 Kph translates to my english ballistic frame of reference to about 410 fps. With the air we had more than twice that or about 1000 fps measured with a ballistic chronograph. If you ever move to 2.0 of the ping pong ball antics that might be fun.
