Thanks for the very helpful information. I couldn't be happier with the several newsboys that I've purchased from JJ. And, the advice that you've provided will help me to maximize their useful life.
Thanks for this, I've got a few but never seen a washing video on it. Now a days these caps are a step up the style ladder from a baseball cap, but in Europe they really were the "baseball" cap of it's day; every working man had one.
I have two Harris Tweed newsboy caps and I do not look forward having to washing them. Happily that won't happen soon.Great information. I now have less fear about washing the caps should I need to
I only have a few wool things since changing to washable polar fleece clothing. I bought a home dry cleaning kit made by Dryel. You put your garment in a large bag with Velcro closure and place a cleaning sheet in there. Then run the whole thing through the dryer. This method isn’t going to do deep cleaning but it does freshen sweaters, knit hats and scarves etc. very well. I ‘think’ you could put one of those caps in there and put the dryer on gentle and low heat checking it every few minutes so the band doesn’t get too hot and the bill doesn’t get smooshed. I save a lot of money with this method compared to having things dry cleaned. Now I just have to send my long winter coat 🧥to the cleaners 💵. I’m with you on the Woolite. I use it for a lot of things, especially my cycling clothing 🚵♀️✅. 👍☮️🌞🎸🚴♀️🐾💙
ramble shrammble!! Keep doing as you do it Kevin!!! It's awesome!!! as per usual!! Many thank for the info!! I thought I watched the all but must missed this one. I remember you talking about the Brando spitfire but maybe it was in another vid? either way thanks again!!!! You rock!!!@@KTGHATS 🤙
Thanks. Been thinking of getting a linen or other fabric flat cap. Had a military beret. It said dry clean only. Tried to have it cleaned. The leather sweat band didn't survive.
Of course, for every fall winter cap, there’s an equivalent summer spring model, we usually order them in linen with a cotton lining. Right now the summer weight stuff is half off, basically wholesale price, because it’s off season. Woo lite does actually contain some enzymes which are not good for wool. But all wool can be washed gently with up to 30c water without agitation and rapid temperature changes which is what kills the wool and makes it shrink. I use a ph balance baby shampoo . Then I rinse in same temperature and soak in a lanolin 30c water for up to all night. Lanolin revitalizes the wool and also protects the wool and helps waterproof it as Mother Nature intended. A minimum of 30 minutes but over night is fine. Do not rinse out the lanolin. Gently remove and dry in a towel flat or a gentle spin first. No agitation though. I then gently reshape as it slowly dries. Things that kill wool are temperature changes, enzymes, agitation and of course moths. Keep in a bag or similar. I also place all wool brought into the house in the freezer overnight as a precaution against moth larvae before storing away. Wool can even be safely brought up to 80c so long as you bring it up slowly and cool down gently.
Thanks for video, just got myself a flatcap from Dents after watching your video. It's a little big, Any idea for best way to slightly shrink it? Love it, looks just like your one :)
So there is no safe way to clean the bill at all? Mine is discolored from 10 years of use both on the top and underneath the bill. I was hoping I could clean that...
If hand washing doesn’t do it, there’s a great stain remover I got on Amazon that comes in a pump spray bottle, white label w blue letters, called Puracy, that’s a last resort though but Woolite and warm water does it usually, use a stiff fingernail brush, let it dry at room temp on a dry towel
Thanks, but shortly after I asked the question in the comment section, I tried using a spray bottle of 91% isopropyl alcohol and a sheet of paper towel to get the stains out and it worked out great for me, in case anyone else might be interested. It seems to be a fairly safe option. Like with anything else involving chemicals, test it on an inconspicuous spot for colorfastness.
Not custom caps, only felt is straw hats. You need to find a custom cap maker online. The Fedora lounge Facebook group can lead you to a couple of them
Kevin! Kevin! Kevin! Now I need to get another flat cap. Haven’t had one since I was a teenager. My Como arrived today. I see why you are into pre-bankruptcy Borsalino… this thing is awesome!!! I just wish it was in other colors, but happy I was able to find this one. It is NOS. The crown is a little high, but I think I like it. It’s different than my other hats. If I change my mind I’ll send it to you to lower the crown; but as of right now it is perfect. As always, thanks for your help.😎
I shouldn't have been careless with my hat, I was machine washing mine for years and didn't know any better. The bill of my hat cracked last year, lost a good newsboy hat that day. 😔 Rip
This is the first video I have ever seen regarding maintaining a newsboys cap. Thank you it was very helpful.
I enjoy these informative videos on flat caps and newsboys and how to maintain them. No one knows hats more than you and I trust only you.
Thanks Kev, no heat when it’s drying, and don’t wet the peak, just the sweatband..
Thanks for the very helpful information.

Thanks for sharing your knowledge, Kev. Very timely for this one as I just got my hair cut short and brought out the caps!

Thank you for this video. I was just about to take my mucros flat cap and have it dry cleaned.

Never does
Thanks man for sharing this information. You are a rock star!
Awesomeness. Thanks for doing a cap video. 👍😊❤️👏👏👏
More to come
Can you wear a newsboy/flatcap in summer? They are the non-wool ones worth messing with? Thanks for the informative videos!

I'm in Connecticut and can wear my wool newsboys almost all year round. My linen caps are worn when the Temps get too hot.
Great video 👍🙂
Thank you 👍👍

I can’t wait to basically dress up like Mario at work, knowing how to clean the hat
This is very useful video for me thanks kevin
Glad it was helpful!
Nice, Just got a flat cap couple months ago.
I've had my news boy cap for over 20yrs and have never cleaned it, what if the cap needs cleaning all over?
So there is no safe way to clean the bill at all? Mine is discolored from 10 years of use both on the top and underneath the bill. I was hoping I could clean that...
What if the cap has visible stains on the outside material? Mine is a gray stetson cap and the material is 45% linen and 55% cotton...

Thanks for the great video
You bet
Been looking for this for ages
I guess wool berets will shrink in the same manner? Any tips on how to wash those Kevin?
Same way, hand wash, woolite , no heat, dry on a towel away from any heat .. never dry clean
Just don’t do it often, only when absolutely needed ..it’ll hand wash okay
Nice video, thank you
The only wash I have is Tide 😭🙏 could I still wash it ? The inside of my hat is velvet !
I would not, use woolite or a gentle soap , rather than detergent
Can JJ Do custom hats if we send in material?

Thx Warrior, ☮️hope you are well, Kev

Indeed… you as well :)
I have a newsboy cap with sweat marks an inch past the band, visible on the outside and on the front brim. any recommendations?
Thanks mate
Does this apply to wool caps or no?
