Just want to say a big thank you for this video. I really like old Coleman stoves but they are really hard to get here on the other side of the pond. I finally managed to score a 400A in a decent condition and at a logical price the other day and by following the steps in your video I disassembled it, identified and repaired the defects, removed the rust and now it's running smoothly. Thank you for your help, you made me very happy!
I luv you laid back style and easy presintation....You don't talk too much and confuse...but you do just right! Lol. 😊 Pleasure to watch you working. Its very pleasent and relaxing. Excellent work.
Thanks for this very clear and precise video! Your step to step explanation gave me enough confidence to disassemble and clean my coleman 442 and now it works again :D
Thanks for the excellent information. My 400B is +30 years old and I've only had to keep the pump oiled correctly. IMHO, always using clean fuel, filtering it when filling, helps keep everything running smoothly.
My 533 has not been working for a while. I had just watched Coleman's video showing how to change the generator. I was about to order a new one, and then I thought it was too silly not to try to clean it. A few hours ago, I decided to take it apart and that's where I would have needed your video. I was afraid of having made a mistake by completely removing the small steel wire which really did not slide at all. Finally I managed to put everything together, but I was not completely serene. Now that I saw your video, I am reassured, and I think that I will soon disassemble it again to better clean it because even if now it works, and I am very happy of that, it makes a lot of yellow flames and soot. Thank you for this really useful tutorial.
It's videos like this one which make me such a fan of the channel. You are an excellent teacher. Methodical, with detailed explanations. Keep up the superb job.
I really appreciate the video and step by step explanations. It was very helpful when you brought the parts close to the camera so that we could see the details. My stove (a gift from family) is now working again!
My grandsons stove stopped working, Your video could not have been more helpful very precise and clear commentary on the disassembly of the stove. Many thanks I will now go and fix it.
I have the same stove and do to your instructions I'm going to clean it after I'm done cooking on it. Thank you so much. I also bought a lot of Stanley products watching your videos some I haven't even used yet.
Wow. I learned a lot. I learned I will need a magnetic muffin tin, to sit all my little parts in, so they don't get lost too! But I do have a Peak1 stove, I need to give a thorough cleaning to. Thanks
Thank you very much, I have never taken down (disassembled) one of these type stoves. This was a great instructional video! Very professional and easy to understand. Thanks again, God Bless you and yours! Joe
Thanks for putting this video together! I bought a nice Peak 1 550B model (1993 yr) the other day, and it seems to work well.. but I’m sure it hasn’t had a proper cleaning in a number of years.. my plan is to basically follow as you mentioned in the video an reassemble. Learned a lot from your video! Thanks again and take care!
Great instructional video. I have my father's old 400 stove, which has been sitting in the attic for 30+ years. This will be a great reference as I bring it back.
I dont think Coleman changed the design. When I bought a new one for my own use, my dad showed me how to tear down and clean it using his from the 60's. Almost part for part they were the same.
Thanks for your response. This 400 generator does not have the removable nozzle as some do, as you mentioned in your video. I have sprayed brake cleaner into generator tube with the fine red tube , let sit for a short time and blew out with compressed air. Generator wire is difficult to insert, so I feel cleaning is required. What other chemicals may be used
Thanks for a very good video. You clean the wire of the generator but no mention of cleaning the generator tube. How best to perform this function and thus complete the cleaning of the generator- --brake cleaner or ????? and blow out with compressed air???? Thanks for advice.
I was very impressed with this video. Very clear and concise and informative. I have a Feather 400 and have fuel spraying out of the lever so I'm guessing that my O ring is shot. Can you tell me what size O ring I would need to replace the old one? Again, great video and thank you.
The valve lever position spring puts a side load on the oring, the 5/32 IDx 9/32" OD x 1/16'' oring works fine, but after sitting unused in the "clipped" position, the oring deforms and causes fuel leakage. Replacing the oring with a fresh one resolves the leak, so I store my stove (long term) in the unclipped position.
Thanks, from your video I determined my valve oring was too small, need a bigger cross section to stop the leak, maybe you could specify the size & specs for this blue oring? Thanks!
I tore into one of my Coleman single burners today (a Peak 1, similar to the Feather 400), and after a full disassembly/reassembly, I found that I need a new check valve and air stem. The current one has stripped threads. While searching for replacement parts I discovered a tool on Ebay that's made specifically for the job, so I don't have to risk a screwdriver mistake. Everything should arrive in a week or so.
Excellent instructional video. I'm interested in getting a Coleman single burner stove. I'd use it for truck camping and day trips from main camp. Do you have a preference 502, 400 or something else. I do want to stay with a Coleman fuel pressurized type stove. Thx!
Hello, I love your show. I watch it all the time, I recently purchased a Coleman peak, one model 400 stove I for the life of me cannot find a generator for it. What’s happening is the little black handle that goes back left and right from clean to light leaks down near where the handle is, I don’t have a way of re-packing it. Do you have any suggestions where to get a generator cause it’s a great stove I had it running but then I noticed it. Flame was kind of coming down where the handle is.
So, thanks to your film I stripped down my Coleman Feather 400 model 400B7014 [still got the box!] The jet was totally blocked, I cleared it, reassembled it, tried it, and nothing, no pressure! what you you think? the cup on the pump? Thanks for any advice.
@@jiujitsu2000 I'd say no, had a funny day today and didn't get to try it out till late tonight [outside] too dark to start messing around. if you can give me some advice I'll try fix act on your advice tomorrow [in U.K.] Thanks.
Very helpful. Do you have to replace O rings much? I have a 533 that was NOS and works but due to age might need them replaced. Is the 550 b much lighter with the aluminum tank? I like the 533 but mostly use a Trangia or Caldera Cone for hiking now.
Hi, really great video ! I’m about to buy one, and i cant find if this model works with unleaded gas or only with Coleman’s fuel. If you can answer me this will be great. Thank again.
My stoves that are built for Coleman fuel all burn low octane gasoline. There's a slight risk doing this however because it can lead to cleaning/replacing generator faster than if using Coleman fuel.
Hello, Thanks for the great video. On the video at 1:00 you give a list of tools you nead for the job. Could you write down the dimensions of the tools? I use at home metric tools. I have to buy and would be sure that I have the right sizes. Thanks.
I have the same stove. Getting fire ignition in between the large bowl and inner bowl. Need to take it apart I already tried resending the bracket that holds the generator into the box. It's got to be a seal issue between the bottom of the base (first part on the fondt) and the large bowl or somewhere in there. Thought I saw a video but can't find it
I bought a Feather 400 on ebay but the flame was very low. Based on this video I took it apart and cleaned it. After I put it back together I had no flame at all. Oh well...
if you use steel wool to clean that wire make sure it is the stainless variant. Because otherwise you might get rusty spots on the wire that can even make the wire itself rust
Are there o rings in the valve assembly that need to be replaced periodically? Can you do that by disassembling only the valve? Any other gasket or o rings that need replacing? Thanks
Great assembly / disassembly video. Would this process apply to a coleman 533 dual fuel stove? I have one and wanted to clean everything inside out. Looks to me that the only difference between this model and the 533 is the pump and the fuel tank but the top assembly is almost the same... or not? Thanks!
Great video! How different is it disassembling the the feather 442? I think I saw one on your table. Also, i'm smelling a slight fuel leak from my 442 when not in use and wondering what part is the most likely culprit. Thanks again.
Hi JIUJITSU2000, I have a peak1 400 model, and I was wondering if I can change the wicks, and if I could, what type should i put. Any recommendations? Thank you.
one question. whenever I use this stove, yellow flame appear just below bottom of the generator bracket. i have to blow to distinguish the flame so often. fuel leakage or mal-manufactured ?
If there is one piece of camp equipment Coleman produced that stands the test of time, as well as the new versions - it would be their liquid fuel stoves. My dad still uses his from the early 60's and I purchased a new one a few years back. Both are going strong.
The problem I'm having is with the check valve, the only part you did not disassemble. How does it come out? Does it just unscrew to remove? Video was very informative though. Tks.
Edward Scott Thank you! A large flathead screwdriver... normal threads. They're difficult to break free sometimes. I might release a video on how to remove them tomorrow
Thank-you so much for your quick reply. You're not kidding when you mentioned the valve is difficult to break free. I did try [before asking you] to back off the valve as you recommended but stopped because of not being sure of the procedure. I did figure there was a stuck steel ball in the open position as I was getting back-pressure on the pump so in the interim I removed the needle and put a couple of drops of Penetrant Oil in the valve, let it sit for 20 minutes and then with the screwdriver and hammer I gave the valve a sharp whack. The ball freed up and the check valve seems to be working fine, for now. If it acts up again and with your info I now feel confident that I can remove the valve. I've located a Coleman dealer here in Montreal where I will be able to pick-up a new kit. A video from you would also be greatly appreciated. Again, thank-you!!
@@edwardscott9200 for anyone else trying to remove the check valve a little info, screw drivers will work but they do not fit properly , you can get the special tool for the job or you can improvise, my method was a old file that fitted snuggly in the slot a used a pair of adjustable at 90% to apply turning pressure
Jiujitsu2000, I recently acquired a used exponent 442 stove. The steel legs on it are very loose. Is this normal? If not is there a way for me to tighten them up? They appear to be riveted to the body.
